Please tell us what you think are important Do's and Don'ts when it comes to emails, instant messaging, chatroom talk, etc.

If I do not respond after 2-3 emails/IMs. Then DO NOT keep trying. I am trying to tell you something.

DO NOT send me a chain letter. Do it more than once and you are going on the block list.

And on the subject of chain letters. DO NOT get my email from a chain letter and then email me. You do not have my address for a reason. I will forward your mail straight to the trash if this happens.

If you get an away message, when you IM me. DO NOT keep replying to the away message. In case you didn't know I can still see who is IMing me AND what they say.

DO NOT WRITE IN ALL CAPS. IT'S ANNOYING.

Do not send me that gd e-mail about blacks losing the right to vote in 2007. If you didn't know, we get the right to vote from the 14th amendment. Let it go.

Do not write a message asking for opinions and then get upset when people disagree with you! If you just wanted validation then you should have asked for it.

Do not expect people not to have a different opinion from you, and don't get mad when they express it.

DO NOT talk to people on IM who live ACROSS THE HALL down the hall next door in the SAME room as you!

DO NOT use the TALK feature on AIM becaues its slow and stupid... pick up the daym fone! if its long distance use fonefree or somethin like that.

DO NOT leave up an away message that says you are in the shower for 13 hours, nobody is THAT DIRTY!

DO NOT forget to uncheck the auto signon and save password features when using other peoples computer... they will impersonate you and they are nosey no matter how much you trust them

DO NOT write in 12pt fonts our focus is already goin in and out from staring at a screen for so long?

DO NOT write in 24pt fonts it makes it so only one word comes out on each line and its frustrating?

DO NOT warn people for no reason

DO NOT allow the computer to become a substitute for human interaction

DO NOT get into arguments with people over the net... do you know how many different ways you can say the exact same words and they have differnt meanings?

DO NOT let other people use your name, its a free service let em get their own

DO NOT type anything on the computer that you wouldnt want the world to see... cuz believe me someone will see it

DO NOT go into a chat room and say it sux... just leave

DO NOT have a screen name like TyGhT_AZZ_PADUSI or MOKOOCHIEFORYOU and expect anybody to respect you.

DO NOT go away for ten days and leave your AIM on its just stupid...

DO NOT use thoes nasty little icons like "eat out" or the one with the growing penis shooting of the girls head you will get warned because it is offensive

DO NOT write ten sentances before pushing enter that cause the other person to have to scroll to see what the heck ur talkin about

DO NOT think you know someone just because you've talked to them on the internet for any length of time

DO NOT think that when you and a girl/boy talk about your feelings for one another on aim the they dont utilize the "SAVE IM" feature and email the conversation to thier friends.

girly you know i got a whole folder full of "evidence" on my computer, it makes it easier to catch people in a lie when you can just pull up a dated message with the timestamps on it and everything... when will people ever learn...

Do not send me chain letters about some urban legend or internet lie claiming that I will be sent a check if I forward it -- IF SOMETHING IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT IS!!

DO NOT send me a PM out of the blue asking me some random question about "the journey." DON'T think that just because we may both be sisterfriends that I am going to share some information with you! I DON'T KNOW YOU!

DO NOT think that just because you are on the internet that you have to privilege to IGNORE all spelling and grammar rules! :mad: NO, the point is NOT to type fast and to the point. If your spelling is off and your grammar is equivalent to that of a second grader's, how the hayle do you expect us to know what you are talking about? :mad:

DO NOT ask for opinions/comments/advice from a SPECIFIC group of people and then reject their opinions/comments/advice!

DO NOT CLAIM to have read the P.O.W. or rules of any chatroom, forum, etc., but BLATANTLY violate the rules REPEATEDLY!

DO NOT try to use "loopholes" in said rules as a way of justifying you asking/posting a stupid azz question or comment. People shouldn't have to list every single do and don't. From what is given, you should be able to adequately deduce all other things that may be deemed (in)appropriate.

DO know that the internet is not completely anonymous. You may be big and bad behind your computer screen, but through tiny clues and a few clicks of the mouse, people can figure out who you are.

Do pick up the phone to call me or drop by for a visit rather than solely communiticating with me through IM.

DON'T send me any e-mails that require me to send it to 100 other people just to prove I love Jesus! NO, I am not going to go to Hell if I don't. NO, Jesus does not read e-mail nor keep track of stuff like that, so DON'T try to guilt me.

DON'T send me a million forwards but can't take the time to write a short e-mail asking how I am doing. If, that's all our friendship is about, take me off of your address list.

Guuuuuuuurl don't you know that since they have been planning my reunion, folks who I have not talked to/seen/breathed on since June 10, 1993 have been e-mailing me. This one girl in one week sent me 7011 forwards. It was really like 18 but all of them were old and stuff I had seen 100 times over. No notes asking how I had been doing for 9 1/2 years or nothing. So what did I do? LMAO @ me. I went to the motivational thread in DST and sent her the first 50 motivational posts ONE by damn ONE. I cannot wait to see her this Friday. She should be good and motivated. :D



ETA: STOP FORWARDING ME ISHT With 8000000000 headers and previous recipients. IF you do not know how to cut and paste it out, do not forward it to you. I once got a forward of like 100K and the only thing I had to read was "PRAISE JESUS" or "YOU ARE MY FRIEND" or some isht like that. I was like you sorry azzzzzzzz mofo. :mad:

I HATE it when folx send me emails and there is no sense of flow or structure to what they are saying and I have to reread it two and three times just to figure out what the general message they are trying to convey in their email. Matter of fact, I have had emails that are so bad (HOW BAD ARE THEY?!!), I will return the email to the sender and tell them that it is unreadable and that they need to rewrite, restructure, and resend it to me, because I will not read undecipherable incoherent emails.

I also hate it when folx reply to replys of replys--essentially you are getting one email with 15 previous email replys attached to it. Only include pertinent email correspondence with the original email. Or better yet, just start off with a fresh email.

I also hate chain emails also. I have noticed more women send them then men--please stop it.

any email containing a hoax of any kind,
e-mails/files that are extremely large. That *ish eats up my mailbox and prevents real mail from coming through,
"you go girl" poems, emails, or forwards. I don't need it or want it. I got my real girls for that stuff.
emails about business opportunities form a foreign country. I don't know these folks and they ain't getting my money.

DO NOT develop cyber-schizophrenia...meaning you register on a chatboard with several different identities, and carry on conversations with yourself. You are NOT fooling anyone, mmkay? THANKS!!! :cool:

Man, a guy here actually fell for one of those scams! But the worse part is, he started scamming other people to raise the money to send for that "Nigerian businessman" scam, and wound up getting scammed himself!!!

DO bookmark http://www.snopes.com - the Urban Legend Reference pages. Anytime you receive one in e-mail, it should be second nature to check this page.

DON'T send HTML e-mail. If I wanted a web page, I'd use my web browser. There's nothing you can say in HTML e-mail that can't be done in plain text. Besides, that background you chose? TACKY.

DON'T send attachments larger than 1 MB in size. Yeah, I know most of us have high speed internet, but that doesn't mean that we have huge mailboxes.

DON'T assume that everyone is on a PC! Stop sending me isht with . exe, .pif, .sca, and all those other crazy Windows extensions! Yeah, I know I have Virtual PC on my Mac - but you know, I refuse to open that stuff on GP.

DO learn to edit your quoted material. Most e-mail programs allow you to highlight what you want to quote before hitting 'reply'.

DO learn to read headers. That way you can find out who sent the original chain letter/blacks losing the right to vote/send a sick kid an e-mail message and bless them to high heaven.

AMEN! One of my best friends (God love her) does this all the time and it makes me so sick! It's the digital equivalent of that poster with the cat hanging from a branch that says "hang in there".

Ditto for those "devotional" e-mails. I don't think God belongs in my inbox.

Maybe I only get these because I am in school...but please don't send me the "Get to know your friends better" emails with the 50 questions like:
What is the name that appears on your birth certificate?
What is your favorite food?
What is your favorite color? and etc.

If you are truly my girl and I value our friendship, then I will already know all of these things...Please don't send them to me because I don't have time to answer all those questions and besides, I have an old computer so it will probably stall before I have the chance to finish it.

This was cute in high school like the first time I got it but HOT DAYUM it is sooooo annoying now. I hate the Jesus chains absolutely hate them. Forwards of any kind. I have one friend who gets an "I told you bout them forwards" email every two months. Hated it....

I also post in a forum on whaddat.com based in JA. There is this one guy who posts like everyday and all he does is criticize the members of the board and the coordinators of the website. It's soooooo annoying, if you dont like the board LEAVE!

DO send me emails to say hi and how are doing and to keep in touch.

DO send me jokes, I might need to be humored at times!

DON'T send me emails trying to sell me Viagara or anything penis enlargement, hello I am a woman. While we are on that topic, DON'T send me emails selling stuff to increase my bust size.

DON'T send me emails telling me to check out your webcam. What you do in your place is your business. Keep me out of it.

DON'T send any viruses by stealing or borrowing a friend, sister or relative's email. I learned this the hard way and my dad had to put the old computer out of its misery.

Do NOT send the same email to all my email addresses. Once to one is sufficient thank you.

Jesus does not have a "did you forward my message list" so stop sending me stuff that has been out as long as the internet as been out.

Ditto on the warnings on viruses, hoaxes, spam...check out urban legends BEFORE sending it to me. And don't get mad when i send the link to you to say it is a hoax.

Use the subject line....unless we are having a convo on the DL and we have newsy folks that read others email while standing around (Beat it!)

If I am sending out info (non work related) and the list is Bcc, Don't ask me who I sent it to and our circles aren't the same. Don't worry bout it. You do your people.

Use Bcc, request message read/delivered options they are great!

Ditto on the million forwards and when I reply and ask you how are you doing, don't forward me more crap and never respond to my inquiry (my college roomate dammit!). You gets no more from me.

Please forgive me for crashing, but y'all are striking some major chords!

I'd like to add that, if a forward is important enough to send, it's important enough for the sender to delete ALL the headers, and ALL the carats!

NO ONE is keeping track of how many emails are sent, so no one is going to give money for any amount of emails sent.

No amount of emails trigger dancing Barbies or any other "fun" optic.

Jesus loves me, whether or not I forward your emails.

A BIG DON'T:
 

No email hijacking PLEASE!! If I send an email to 10 people about something specific do NOT reply to the email and change the subject. That is email hijacking and it is NOT nice! Doing that is the equivalent to interrupting a conversation. Just send a NEW email OR change the subject line and send the email. :mad:

Also, if you're going to forward something, PLEASE put everyone's email address in the Blind Copy section. There could be someone on that list who doesn't want to get bombarded with emails from another person who's on the list.

Amen to that! One of my friends sends mass emails to all of her friends and includes my email addy. We run in different circles so I am not friends with her friends so I don't want them to have my email addy. :rolleyes: And to make things even more annoying, there are a few people that I don't talk to anymore who are included in her list, people who I don't want to have my contact info. :mad:
