Glenbrook North Hazing -- The Lawsuits!
Many of us remember last year's internationally publicized hazing of Glenbrook North High School students. Now three of the young women who were hazed -- and suffered concussions and more -- are suing 22 students and 40 parents for (it's reported) at least a half million dollars each.
The Associated Press story: http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/05/06/ha....ap/index.html ( IIRC, a GCer at a major midwestern university posted on a GC thread that her sorority quickly cut one of the women who helped do the hazing when she went through recruitment. ) |

Good Job to IIRC and her chapter for not letting in a female that has no problem hazing other females.
It chapters like this that make me VERY PROUD TO BE GREEK. ;) |

I'm glad to hear that the women involved in the hazing were cut in recruitment. Kudos to that chapter! |

As a lifelong resident of Chicago's North Shore (my primordial home is only 2 miles from the scene of the infamous hazing), I can say that we're not known for facing up to problems in our families.
My wife teaches in Waukegan, a blue-collar, lower-middle class suburb north of the ritzier suburbs. She's said that she'd rather teach there because the parents aren't as intrusive ("...whattya mean, my child HAS TO BE in AP French...all the other 4th graders are doing it!"). Every kid is perfect. She told me a friend that teaches on the North Shore got into a jam when she reprimanded one of her students for picking flowers out of a neighbor's yard during recess. The brat's father called the school and threatened to sue the teacher for not letting his little darling "express her creativity" Most of us aren't proud of the events @ GBN. Did you know that PARENTS were TP'ing the homes of jocks this year because their kids were forbidden from doing it? Anybody caught faced expulsion. Now, back to your regularly scheduled risk management issues... |
Several of the hazers got bids at another Midwestern university that has deferred recruitment.
I will say no more. ;) |
I don't know the exact statute(s) but in Georgia, being a party to a crime (you don't actually have to DO the crime) can still you get arrested and get a criminal record.

Also, I can't believe the mom quoted in that article. Of course she's going to stand up for her own daughter, but if they have it on VIDEOTAPE?! Come on... |
Um.......I dunno, but maybe people grow up? Mature?
Change? I mean, they were minors....there are things I did at 17-18 that I didn't do at 19. |
Well, I hope most of the fine GPBs were not one of the Chapters that pledged them. I am sure that The National would not be very happy.:(
Grow up? Hell No, if they did this stuff in HS, what makes anyone in their right mind think they will change to be just angles???? BOZ, I think your post about said what should have been said! First Hand info is much better than hooptiy do on a web site!:) Oh, how bad would you want to join and take a liking like that? Oh, I am a member of ABC and I went through it! |

anyhow, good for the girls.... |
You know, I'm not writing this because I graduated from GBN. I'm not saying this because I knew those girls. My stance on the issue is pretty clearly documented in the thread from a year ago.
I vaguely understood why we discussed the incident a year ago, as those girls were about to graduate and many of them were going to rush. ut I have no idea how it seems relevant to discuss the lawsuits filed a few days ago. It has nothing to do with being Greek. It is not a risk management issue- if anything this belongs in the News forum, although if you consider it news it must be a pretty slow news day in your town. |

We always tp the night before a homecoming game and its something people really look forward to. They can also 'opt out' if their parents don't want it done. I think its great that parents in the community are trying to keep some harmless fun around. |

Talking about the ghey ass lawsuits recently filed does not belong here, IMO. |
ITs probably a little vindictive to think that these girls should be punished for the rest of their lives for this.
As far as NPC membership, these girls are probably less likely to haze than anyone else . . . |
Quoted from the article: Phyllis Gendelman, whose daughter, Liat, was expelled over the hazing, called the suit "without merit."
"This is America, and America is lawsuit-crazy," she said. "But my daughter never laid a hand on anyone." Funny thing is, she is apparently forgetting the videotapes of this incident.... Good luck! Video's and photos can have a definite impact on lawsuits...Trust Me on this! |
