Just Curious......

What was/is everyone's major? Why did you choose this particular major?

niceone 08-08-2000 11:08 PM

My major is Chemical Engineering. Why I chose this major....good question. I went to a high school for the engineering professions so basically engineering was all I really knew. I chose chemical because I thought I would love working with chemicals and creating things. It's a very tough major and I'm struggling but I plan to graduate as a chemical engineer.(God spare)

alesyn 08-08-2000 11:51 PM

My major is political science. I basically chose this major because I am planning on going into law school after I graduate. And that was one of the majors the fit my plans. The other was criminal justice, and I really did not want to limit myself to that. Also I really enjoy politics, especially foreign relations.

I'm a english and secondary education major. I like to read and write so English is a natural choice. I want to specialize on contemporary literature written by people of color. I want to teach English and I don't like elementary school kids so secondary education.

Hey ladies,

My major is Sociology. I picked it because I want to find a way to deal with problems facing the African-American community. I do want to help individuals, but my career will focus on African-American communities as a whole. Also, I'm thinking of opening up some type of non-profit organization/community center (after I start and finish graduate school). Sociology seemed like the best major for me. It may change in grad school though.

Hello all,
My major is Psychology with a minor in Elementary Education. I discovered my love for Psychology during my Sophomore year in High School where I took the class as an elective. I had never encountered a subject so intriguing. I wanted to know what motivated to people to behave the way that they do. I always liked to try to figure people out; understand their motives. Then, I have a love for, or should I say that I am better able to tolerate misbehavior of thechildren. So, I decided to go into the field of Child Psychology. I plan to work as an Eduacator while pursuing my Psy.D, in Child Psychology. Once I achieve that I will open a private practice.....

Kitten03, my major is also English and my minor is Secondary Education! How completely fascinating! I LOVE to write! I started writing a book last summer, but never had the time to continue it. I lost interest...I think it's because I am a comedy writer and what I started writing was more Stephen King/Dean Koontz. Anyway, I prefer working with the high school kids too. Right now I work with the little ones and they have WAY too much energy for me!

My undergraduate major was Speech/Communicative Disorders. I was always fascinated with speech disoders(stuttering), fluency disorders, voice problems, and language disorders. The field is one that has many opportunities and there are so many different work settings. The program at my school is one of the few in the country that allows undergraduates to conduct clinical practicum(therapy). During my first semester of clinic(my junior year), I decided that this was really not what I wanted to do. I stuck it out because I refused to be in undergrad more than four years.

This fall, I will be entering graduate school pursuing a masters in Health Services Administration. I did take some classes in Healthcare Administration during my senior year of undergrad. I want to be an advocate for African Americans and other minorities to help make health care more accessible to them.

I am a Political Science/Psychology major. I chose this major because I plan on attending law school and becoming a criminal prosecuting attorney (federal gov't). I chose Psychology because as a lawyer, I wanted to be able to dictate what type of behaviors witnesses, lawyers, judges etc., displayed in the courtroom. If that doesn't pan out, I plan to become a criminologist.

Me By Nature 08-09-2000 08:14 PM

I was a chemistry major. I choose it because I fell in love with chemistry in High School and couldn't see myself majoring in anything else.

blu_theatrics 08-10-2000 02:03 AM

I have a double major of criminal justice and theatre (i know strange combination)
I also have two minors. One in Deviant sociology and one in public affairs

But amazingly, I am now looking into getting my master's in Social Work.

I guess, I am just a jack-of-all-trades or as my mother calls it
"too lazy to make a real desicion"

But I have found over the years that I love working with children and especially teenagers, so I think that I will stick with the social work thing.....lol

SisterInChrist 08-10-2000 02:51 AM

My major is Radio, Television, and Film. I chose this major because I want to become a director in films and the stage. I was a theatre arts major but I believe that my talents would be better appreciated behind the scenes instead of up on the stage acting, even though I love it.

I am a Vocal Performance major. I chose this because I love music and singing, and I would love to have the opportunity to maybe sing at the Met(ropolitan Opera) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif.....Ultimately, however, I intend to teach private voice at a performing arts high school. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Mocha,
That's cool. I have been trying to write a book for years. But once I get started, i think it sounds bad so I stop. I'm very critical of my writing. Maybe that's why I am going into teaching. I can give someone else the confidence about their writing that I never had about mine. Plus, little kids can barely write their names. I can't deal with them tugging at my skirt and asking for milk and cookies. Even older elementary school kids have too much energy. My bf's mom and her twin are both kindergarten teachers and members of AKA. I don't see how they can deal with the little ones.

carebear 08-10-2000 11:14 AM

Well I entered college as a history/political science major but didn't like it so I changed my second semester to psychology; however I changed it once again to Social Work.

I basically chose to stay w/ social work because of the diverse opportunities that you have w/ a BSW/MSW. In short term planning, I would like to work w/ children/youth & families primarily foster care/adoption or child protective services. In the long term, it is my desire/dream to open a center for emotionally scared, physically, academically, and mentally challenged youth/children.

Okay, mizzkes, I just used your message for my very own. You have the EXACT same love for Psychology that I do. Unfortunately, I ended up getting a Master's in something purely unrelated, because I had no idea how competitive the psych field is. Ironically, though, after graduation last weekend, I hadn't had my Master's degree one day before people began begging me to get into the Master of Music program at the same institution. I had a scholarship in Music my first year in undergrad which I gave up, because the professors were pure CRAP. I was pressured into the field, because it was expected of me. We get messed up real good when we do things just because someone else wants us to do them. I wanted to be a Biology major at the start. Since that time, I've been singing and singing and singing, and people have been begging me to go back into music. I'm SICK of hearing it, so I decided I'd do it. But this time, I'm doing it because I'm curious to know more about the field I gave up. Now that I'm mature enough to handle the pressures of college and grad school, I'm prepared for the challenge. Music isn't easy at all (Theory kicked my butt freshman year), but it is a lot easier for ME (someone who's been in music all her life) than starting a new field I know NOTHING about. Sometimes we have to choose an educational route that encourages the TALENTS we already have. But that doesn't mean I have, in any way, wasted my time getting a Bachelor's degree in Psychology or a Master's in Public Policy. They will benefit me in the long run. The main purpose for me now is just to FINISH my education regardless of the field.

I started off in business admin because my parents forbid me to go into education. Most of my family consists of teachers and everyone says "Teachers don't make no money." After six hours of accounting I decided to follow my dream. I have dual certification in English and Elementary Education. I taught summer school after graduation and decided that teaching is not for me and learned for myself that "Teachers don't make no money ." By luck I ended up working in human services and started a MSW program but because of scheduling conflicts changed to Agency Counseling. Next year, hopefully, I will complete the Agency Counseling program with concentration in social work.

I've always wanted to teach students with learning disabilities. I often thought if motivated all students will find success in education. I still have this belief but I am toooooo old and have very little tolerance at this point to consider going back into the classroom. However, I applaud all teachers especially those that are effective and in for the long haul.

Kitten03, I love little kids to death, but, like yourself, I can't keep up with the energy level. I bet the books that you start to write are actually good but you're probably like me... too critical of your own work! As your writing, let others read it for you and get their feedback. And don't try to rush the story along, that was my mistake...being too eager to finish it! When and IF I ever complete my first book, I want you all to look in the front of the book because I'm going to give a Crazy Big acknowledgement to all of my Greekchat.com family! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

I have a B.S. in Early Childhood Education. I am currently pursuing a second B.S. in Business Administration. I also plan on pursuing my MBA. My ultimate goal is to own a pre-k/childcare center. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

InquiringMind 08-07-2001 05:28 PM

My major is political science. I chose this major b/c it's the only thing I think I could stand for four years. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif But honestly I have always been interested in the government and law and how it works. I do want to attend law school when I graduate, but I want to concentrate more in corporate/entertainment law, so I'm thinking about picking up a minor in business.

Steeltrap 08-07-2001 07:15 PM

My major was print journalism, with a sociology minor. I'm blessed that I've been able to have a career in this field, especially in view of job cutbacks and the fact that people aren't reading the newspapers as much as they used to.

ClassyLady 08-07-2001 09:58 PM

My major is business administration and I am considering adding finance to have a double major. The curriculums are very similar so if it's easy enough, I'll add finance and graduate with two degrees. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

I chose business because I am really good at math and I like working with people. I'm interning at a Financial Services firm. I also plan to go to graduate school for a JD/MBA program. By the time I graduate there, a lot of doors will be open for me.

Kaydphia 08-08-2001 02:02 AM

My major is Elementary Education. Concentration in K-8.

I started off being a Early Childhood Ed major for about 3 years, then decided that I could not deal with teaching small children-too much for me. Then I changed to Middle Childhood Ed with concentrations in Language Arts and Social Studies.

Well, I still felt that this just wasn't for me. Perhaps after being in school 4 years already changed me, but I just wasn't feeling it anymore...so, I took a trip down to Arts & Sciences and changed it a third time.

Now my major is English Literature with a Sociology minor, and I'm much happier!! I'm doing so much better in school now and I actually look forward to class http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Unlike a lot of my friends who despise English, I absolutely love it. I don't regret having the education experience (or the fact that I'm now a "Super-Duper" Senior)-I've learned a lot. But don't think I'm not counting the days till December '02 for graduation http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

I have a dual major of Sociology and Social Work...I didn't really intend on making this my major @ first, I was really interested in Sports Broadcasting/Journalism simply because of my love for sports...However, after, a few semesters and doing some volunteering/mentoring, I realized that I would love nothing more to be able have a directly positive influence on impressionable children/young adults...I saw the positive effect that I was having (not to brag http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif ) on some of the children, and I realized that Social Work was my calling...I also realize that I have to be smart (and that I would like to compensated for my hard work http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif ), so I'm going to get my masters in Social Work. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/cool.gif

Sugar_N_Spice 12-12-2001 08:31 PM

To The Top We Go...

My major is Sociology, and I am minoring in Political Science and Public Policy. I chose Sociology b/c it focuses on society and why people do the things they do, and looks for ways to eleviate social problems. Well, that's what I like to do, so the major is perfect for me.

As far as Political Science goes, I want to take the law-related courses in the department (I am Pre-Law). I do not like the major enough to major in it, but I like the flexibility of the minor.

Lastly, I chose Public Policy as my other minor, with a concentration in Social Welfare, b/c as I stated earlier, my joy lies in helping others. Also, the minor will give me a clear understanding of what "Public Policy" and "Social Welfare" actually are, which will hep me decide which of the two I want to get my Masters in (and which degree will work best in conjuction with a law degree).
