Non IFC/NPCs with houses?

So it's quite common for IFC and NPCs to have houses. However:

--I rarely, if ever, hear of NPHCs with houses. Why is this? Or is it more common and I'm not aware of it?

--What about other groups? I know there are at least a few SAI chapters with houses (Beta, at Northwestern; Sigma Alpha somewhere in Illinois; maybe a few others), as well as a few Phi Mu Alpha houses. How many other groups like these have houses? And if you have pics, please post! :)

jhujenn 05-05-2004 04:04 PM

Alpha Chi Sigma, a professional chemistry fraternity, has houses at some schools. I know that Purdue, Illinois, Virginia, and others have houses.

Ginger 05-05-2004 04:07 PM

Phi Mu Alpha has an "unofficial" house at my alma mater. They used to have an official one but sold it about 7 years ago.

Delta Omicron has had unofficial houses from time to time on my campus, although we don't currently. We've never had an official house on campus, however, I know there are campuses that do.

Diamond Delta 05-05-2004 04:22 PM

There are several independent sororities at New England schools tha have houses. Agonian comes to mind.....:)

Tom Earp 05-05-2004 04:55 PM

NPHC Chapters at Known as Predomentaly Black schools have Houses.

But on most campi, they dont because of smaller numbers.

Houses cost money to keep up and unless there enough membrs, it is hard to do. Plain and simple.

This is just a thumbnail sketch from what I know from NHPC Friends.:)

chideltjen 05-05-2004 05:02 PM

There is a local sorority in Chico that has a house. I don't think they are NPC. They are called Alpha Chi.

And SAEPi... the famous MTV SL sorority, also had a house. (One that wasn't provided by mtv.)

shadokat 05-05-2004 05:28 PM

All of the locals on my campus had houses. KAPsi had an "unofficial" house, as did all of the NPC sororities and the IFC fraternities. There wasn't one group on campus that didn't have a house somewhere with letters on it designating it as a fraternity or sorority house. Mind you, many were crap holes, but it sufficed.

sugar and spice 05-05-2004 05:36 PM

There's an professional engineering frat here that has a house, I think. Looking at old yearbooks, tons of the professional GLOs used to have houses back in the earlier half of last century.

I think the NPHC organizations might have houses at a few big Southern schools -- Bama? And wasn't DST looking to take over a house at LSU? What happened with that?

enlightenment06 05-05-2004 05:37 PM

as Tom said, it's because most NPHC college chapters at predominantly white institutions don't have enough members to have an entire house.

jhujenn 05-05-2004 05:45 PM

I think the Phi Beta Sigma at Ole Miss has a house and I know that AKA and Delta Sigma Theta had houses there as well.

jubilance1922 05-05-2004 06:00 PM

I'm a member of the beta chapter of Alpha Chi Sigma and we have a house. Several of our chapters do.

At my school, Theta Tau engineering fraternity, Kappa Eta Kappa engineering fraternity, and Triangle fraternity all have a house.

As for NPHCs: Alpha Phi Alpha has a house at Univ. of Michigan, and they are getting their house back at Alabama. Also at Alabama, the AKAs, Deltas, and Sigmas have a house. At Georgia Tech, the Deltas have a house, and I think the Kappas do too.

That's all that I know about...

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds exacutly like my undergrad. I remember one fraternity house where I REFUSED to go in the basement because I was seriously scared the house would collapse.

I actually kinda felt bad for some of the fraternities, because during mixers EVERY girl from EVERY sorority felt like it was a good idea to write letters on EVERYTHING (ie walls-esp the bathroom, the floor, the fridge...I even saw a group's name on the cover of the toilet seat.) The only interesting thing was seeing the letter's of sororities that are no longer active (and seeing my old babysitter's name).

TSteven 05-05-2004 07:13 PM

At the University of Kentucky, Kappa Alpha Psi rented a house from the University right before the start of the 1980-81 school year. The Phi Beta Sigma chapter did likewise within a month.

Unfortunately, they were part of the fraternity houses (which also included the Alpha Tau Omega, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Phi Kappa Tau houses) that were torn down to build the new main library. Along with other buildings.

UK is presently developing Greek housing. And my understanding is that the new housing will include NPHC, IFC and NPC chapters.

Steeltrap 05-05-2004 07:24 PM

In the 1980s, when I was an undergrad at the University of Southern California, Kappa Alpha Psi rented a house on the Row (28th Street). My sorority has a house near USC, but it's not residential.

tld221 05-05-2004 07:49 PM

our school has floors for houses.
i think thats kinda crappy, cause thats makes them less visible on campus. and they are all in one section of one dorm, and u need a keycard to take the elevator up, so its really isolating.

even worse, the school is moving all the greeks out of their dorm now to make it all freshman, and move them to the downtown dorms (that sux even more for them).

itd be cool to have houses here, then again the rent in teh city is monstrous. the houses would be some studio apt in williamsburg or astoria. and of course, it would really look out of place.

imagine walking across a sorority or fraternity house on broadway and prince st. or bleeker? kinda weird.

but i would enjoy it.

starang21 05-05-2004 09:15 PM

the Deltas were the only ones with a specific house. most times it was just a house that was being rented out by a bunch of the brothers.

Jill1228 05-05-2004 09:35 PM

I remember seeing a pix of it in Ebony Magazine

I know at ECU the numbers are just too low. Delta actually didn't have anyone around for a while cause everyone graduated out and finally's making a come back. But I'd love to see them or AKA with a house. I love those girls!

DeltaSigStan 05-05-2004 10:18 PM

Two of the Latino fraternities and the multicultural fraternity have a house here at SDSU, as well as Alpha Gamma Omega.

They project that by 2006, all 15 IFC, 10 Panhellenic, and the 12 cultural GLOs (NPHC excluded) will have a house

IvySpice 05-06-2004 07:17 PM

When I visited Vanderbilt, I noted that the fraternity row there features one house displaying the letters of three NPHC fraternities.

Moxie 05-06-2004 07:29 PM

the alpha phi alpha guys at LSU have a house. DST looked into getting one, but the houses that are vacant right now need too much work. at least that's my understanding of the situation.

suntzu1963 05-06-2004 07:49 PM

Iota Phi Theta's chapter (Nu) at the Univ. of MD- College Park has a house.

http://www.iotanovicesite.com/iotasi.../nuchapter.jpg

Here is a photo of some of the chapter members standing on the steps from a few years ago. Sorry that it isn't a photo of the full house, but it was recently renovated and is very nice.

*****Shameless plug****** Anyone that is in the area of the school or in the mood to take a roadtrip this weekend, the chapter is hosting it's 5th Annual BBQ at the house (7512 Princeton Ave., Saturday, 12pm). For more info, email the chapter at: nu_chapter@hotmail.com

Also, the chapter at the University of Illinois (Alpha Lambda) has a house as well. (see below)

http://www.iotanovicesite.com/alathouse.jpg

I agree with those that have said that sizes of chapters are a major reason why more chapters do not have official houses on campuses.

USC non-IFC/PHC w/ houses

At USC (Southern California) we actually have a lot that have houses. Two Asian fraternities, Beta Omega Phi and Gamma Epsilon Omega, have houses on or near the row (though Gammas lost their university-owned house last year and moved a couple blocks away). Alpha Rho CHi, the architecture fraternity and Sigma Phi Delta, engineering, both have houses also, and I'm sure there are a few others with houses away from the actual row that I just don't know about...

Can anyone find more pictures?????

This is the Alpha House in Washington, DC, currently owned by my chapter (Mu Lambda) and under renovation.

I know it's an alumni chapter house, and non-residential, but I wanted to show off anyway. :D

preciousjeni 07-18-2004 03:00 AM

Well, they're both beautiful! I'm off to search out some more!

TigerLilly 07-18-2004 03:26 AM

I'm pretty sure I remember there being a KAPsi house at U. of KY. Not on-campus, but pretty close to it. Their chapter doesn't seem to have a webpage, though, so I can't find a picture of it.

Sister Havana 07-18-2004 11:19 AM

There is a Kappa Alpha Psi house at Indiana University. The chapter members don't live in it and haven't since the mid-90s or so, since the chapter is not large enough to justify the expenses of living in the house. The chapter owns it though, and is currently renting it out to another group.

Erik P Conard 07-18-2004 07:20 PM

mostly non-NIC houses...

in '57, KAPsi & APhiA had houses at U of Kansas; also KHK engineering, several other professionals.
U of Mich "the mother of professional fraternities" had a good many professionals with houses in the late 50s, I do not know
about today.
Numbers are imperative to support a house; a lot of fraternity learning is had by having a "total experience."
The Risk Management, zoning, bad press, cost, all have had a factor in many groups being unable to have a house. We brought
most of this upon ourselves...and continue to do so.
With sororities, although no one has seemingly charged so...the
many universities with "rooms" or "floors" or "lodges" or other
means of meeting places, seem to imply they feel the girls are
not capable of managing a house. This is a slap in the face of
femininity, but no one seems to have the guts to say it.
Okay, Tom, how many more have I pissed off? LOL

RedRoseSAI 07-18-2004 08:03 PM

Here is SAI's Beta chapter at Northwestern:
http://www.northwestern.edu/housing/images/SAI.jpg

Other chapters with houses include Epsilon at Ithaca (I THINK they still have a house, although it might just be a suite now), and the aforementioned Sigma Alpha at Illinois Wesleyan. Sigma Mu at Hillsdale has a house too, I believe.

Along with Alpha Chi at Chico State, Sigma Alpha the Agricultural sorority, had a house up until this upcoming year (lost it due to numbers). It actually used to be another local sororities house, Kappa Sigma Delta, until they moved...but I think their new house was "unofficial". We also have a very controversial and extremley bothersome "fraternity" that has letters on its house called Chi Tau. The group is not on IFC nor is it associated with the school, all they do is have huge parties and fight with other fraternity members...hence the quotations.

Xylochick216 07-19-2004 10:57 AM

I know at Elon, at least one chapter of the NPHC organizations on campus has a house. All of Elon's houses are owned by the university and sleep just 12 members of the organizations, so they're not big at all. The one that the NPHC chapters use is a half-house, like a duplex. Right now I think Phi Beta Sigma has six members in their half and Sigma Chi has the other half. We have a total of 12 houses on campus that house 13 chapters, and we have 20 IFC, NPC, and NPHC orgs on campus as well as a suite in a dorm. This will be the first year Alpha Chi Omega has a house on campus, and we're way excited about it.

The only picture I could find of the houses is here. I'll keep searching to see if I can find more.

I've heard that AKPsi at UGA has a house. My little transferred there and says they have one.

preciousjeni 07-19-2004 11:03 AM

I'm not sure of the letters but the veterinary fraternity at UGA has a house. I was in puppy class with a person who lived there.

OleMissGlitter 07-19-2004 11:27 AM

AKA, DSQ, ZFB,and FBS have houses.

Here are some links to pictures.
PS These pics are a few years old but the houses look the same just they have nice landscaping!
