Happy Cinco de Mayo

Yo...Happy Cinco de Mayo. Remember Coronas are only properly consumed by the bucket. And lunch time will be a good time people...a GOOD time will be had by all.

For those of you who are historically minded, I got this from a reputable source:

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico.... But as we know....the great ship did not make it to New York....The ship hit an iceberg and sank....and the cargo was forever lost....
The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery....were disconsolate at the loss.... Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning which they still observe to this day....
The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th....and is known....of course....

as Sinko de Mayo....

Actually, Cinco de Mayo celebrates the victory by the Mexicans over the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The actual Mexican Independence Day is September 16.

Can someone tell me how to properly pronounce "Cinco de Mayo"?

lol, yeah. I took French, never Spanish. And since I know "de" in French is "duh" but it's "day" in Spanish, I thought other pronounciations might be different too

What kind of accent do you want? ;)

I mean this in good fun, so please, no one get offended.

When I was growing up in FL, some of our teachers would make fun of the "Southern" way of speaking Spanish...it was always good for a chuckle. Then, when I started taking Spanish class in college in NC, the first day of class everyone thought I was crazy because I was laughing so hard.....the boy was prounouncing "gracias" exactly the way we would typify a Southerner to do so (as in grassy-ass).

My coworkers and I went to this great Mexican place for lunch that serves free maragritas (they do this all the time, not just Cinco de Mayo). Needless to say, I'm going to be pretty useless at work for the rest of the day.

Free margaritas are my friend. :D

$1 Coronas and Tequila shots downtown.. right after class ends at 9:15 and I get my composite picture taken at 9:30.. I'm there!!!

:D :D :D

(this year, they're selling "Corona Buckets" I've heard that they are big buckets that say 'Corona' on them and they are filled with ice and Coronas.. supposedly they're only $10.. we shall see!!:p :) )

2blue 05-05-2004 06:21 PM

I rarely drink but I feel an On The Border margarita coming!:D

lifesaver 05-05-2004 07:11 PM

I say it the tex-mex way, but with an American accent:

Sink-O Da My-O.

Its how I hear it around here....

Anyway... To hell with Corona (although its distribuited by a San Antonio company) I'm a Dos Equis kid... with some lime and a dash of salt..

http://www.dosxx.com/dos_about/dos_history/bottles.jpg

But I want ya'll who do drink Corona to look at the bottle next time. It says, "Distribuited by the Gambrinus Company, San Antonio, TX 78232" So think of lifesaver the next time ya'll is downin a Corona. I guess ya;ll could think of Adri too, but forget her. Think of me, lol.

I was drinking a Corona a few years ago and thought it tasted like something I'd had before, so I read the label and saw the Gambrinus name. I don't know which might the the original, but there was a Gambrinus Brewery in Columbus and a lot of folks drank "Gam." Tasted exactly like Corona.

As for the holiday, nice parade in Denver and a big celebration in Civic Center Park downtown over the weekend -- then cruising Federal Blvd. both nights.

The cops actually helped with the cruising. Nice weekend, few arrests.

Very impressive.

DeltaSigStan 05-05-2004 10:24 PM

We celebrate Cinco de Mayo and the preceding Quatro De Drunko (my big bro's bday)

tinydancer 05-05-2004 10:40 PM

The kids at my school had the cutest parade around the school. All in costumes and dancing La Raspa in the intersection in the front of the school. It was a big deal - we had the streets blocked off so we could dance. It was fun! First time we have done this, but I say it's gonna be tradition from now on.

Peaches-n-Cream 05-05-2004 10:46 PM

We had our alumnae meeting tonight in order to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. We made reservations at a Mexican restaurant downtown called Gonzalez y Gonzalez. It was so crowded that we couldn't get in. We finally spoke to the hostess and they gave away our reservation. We went to another restaurant. As we were about to order, we smelled and saw smoke. Finally, we saw firemen, hot firemen. ;) So we went to restaurant number three after an hour and a half. No margaritas and no Mexican food, but a good time was had by all.

tinydancer 05-05-2004 10:48 PM

Cream, any day you see hot firemen, your day has NOT been wasted;)

lol, all of them were hot. We want to set up a mixer with them. :D

James 05-05-2004 11:30 PM

Coronas have 300 calories per beer:)

sororitygirl2 05-06-2004 02:31 AM

This was totally cute - I came into work this morning planning to eat a banana for breakfast, but one of my coworkers left a breakfast burrito and "Happy Cinco de Mayo" note on my desk before I got there (because I am always late)!

Needless to say, I chose the burrito - it was dynamite on a cajun stick. YUM!

You are such a nerd. :p

mmcat 05-06-2004 07:39 AM

Kevin 05-06-2004 08:10 AM
