Do brothers look good in...

I was in the store today and saw a tall chocolate brother with beautiful muscles, nice smile, etc. However, he had on two things I find totally unattractive on men - overalls and sandals. The overalls were clean, pressed, not even faded, and the sandals were nice leather sandals. Is it just me or do other sisters find men in overalls and/or sandals a turn off?
Is there sometihing that a man can wear or not wear that would negate all other points?

lovelyivy84 08-01-2001 11:50 PM

I HATE, HATE, HATE men who are muscular and wear those tight black t-shirts that are shiny. That style is so played! It makes them look like a 3rd rate wanna-be gigolo.

Burn those shiny shirts my brothas!

Definite CAN wear--those chunky ribbed sweaters from the Gap with some nice jeans or khakis and Tims--the one outfit that can make almost any man look good. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif Also a nice black pinstripe suit that fits right with a monochromatic shirt/tie combination (preferably white, cream, or grey--depending on the stripe) and some nice black dress shoes. I could go on but these are my favorite two. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Definite NO-NO--too tight pants, wide leg pants (short guys), bright colors, muscle shirts (I don't care if you have muscles or not), shirts that have too much going on, and dirty shoes-my personal pet peeve. A brotha can be head to ankle in Platinum Fubu, but if the kicks ain't clean, its over.

I work in a men's store, so I see the good and the bad daily. As for the overalls and sandals--as long as its put together right, I don't have a problem. Translation: no tight shirts, button down shirts, or ashy feet.

MissPradaLover 08-02-2001 01:21 AM

Overalls, muscle shirts, sandals I HATE them. I also dislike shoes with laces that are too tight! That is like, the nastiest thing to me! And by all means, if a guy wear Timbs...keep the scuffs off. Dirty shoes are a major No~No. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

Miss. Mocha 08-02-2001 09:48 AM

Overalls! There is something about them that seem so....effeminine to me. And please, if you must wear them (if it's laundry day or something), do not wear them with a tank top!

Also, no dress socks with shorts, please.

Imperial11 08-02-2001 09:49 AM

Tight stonewash jeans, with a matching denim jacket. Even if the jeans aren't tight, I hate stonewash denim on a man!!!! I want them (men) to just stick with dark denim.

I was feelin' the same thing Mocha- the brothers be lookin' kinda sweet in em' and even the hint of that is a turn off.

KittyKat 08-02-2001 10:25 AM

I don't hate the overalls if they're done right (no wife beaters, and NO TIGHT SHIRTS!!!!). However, for some reason, I'm starting to really dislike guys in shorts. I meet quite a few who look right, but I meet some that are kinda short, or have funny looking legs...not very attractive.

I think we should start a nationwide petition to ban any man from EVER wearing those tight, shiny Black shirts. Y'all know. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Pet peeves

Sandals
tight clothes of any type
girly colors
I am not really feeling shorts and I just don't like shorts and timbs (is it summer, is it winter?)
fur- this to me is the ultimae in feminine. I know this is an opinion I formed as a child but for some reason the furs were for my mom not my dad and that is just the way it should be. Now some coats with a fur accent, maybe, but I will run from a man trying to rock a full length mink coat. Ick.

Likes:
A casual but put together look
Shoes- have to be on point, clean and cared for
Any man gains at least a point with a good (read good amterial, good cut, well coordinated with shirt and tie, well altered) suit.

ROTFLMAO @ shiny

I can't get with the overalls/overhauls. There was a couple at Essence where they BOTH (EEKA, EEKA) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif had on the same overall get up. THEN, to make it bad, ole boy had the ends crossed over then rolled up like we used to do in the 80's. I was like ohhhhhhh no! AND, he had on sandals with them.

I don't have a problem with guys wearing sandals. It just depends on the KIND of sandal AND his feet. If the feet are hooked and crooked:
1. Get a pedicure (the tech doesn't discriminate, men can get one, too!)
2. Wear the athletic sandals with some CLEAN white socks. If they are not clean, oh well.

nikki25 08-02-2001 04:48 PM

Brothers look good in sandals provided they are wearing them with appropriate athletic (for the picnic like sandals) and linen suit kinds of attire (for more dressier sandals). I love looking at a well dressed man who knows when to adorn his outfit with certain types of shoes and is wonderfully masculine.

Diva_56 08-02-2001 04:59 PM

Oh man I can't even get my man out of Tims and it is August! I would love to see him in sandals, he has nice feet and if I see him in black tims again this summer.... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif Hot!

Lovely 08-02-2001 07:42 PM

I have never seen a man with pretty feet, when they're that pretty I'm running.
AKA2D'91 those brothers may have been dating.

straightBOS 08-02-2001 10:23 PM

I'm surprised no one's mentioned shiny denim.
I HATE to see a man in shiny denim, it just kills it. Or one hot item and one played item. No, you cannot wear Iceberg and Filas. Its against the law.

I have to co-sign on shorts, too. I used to think it was just me.

And short guys in anything baggy-it looks like they are playing dress-up.

Lil' bit 08-02-2001 11:12 PM

Ok, so I hate men who wear those matching short sets. I like to call them leisure suits.. I got that from a friend of mine http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. Anyway I hate short sets it just seems so ghetto to me. I also hate those shiny shorts, and I definitely hate brotha's in tight jeans. Can they please be a little loose. I hate when men wear suits that can be bought at those bargain down places because they tend to look a little cheap. Ok, really the last thing is, I hate when people wear their gold chains outside of their dress shirts and ties........ Just my .08

I know there are exceptions BUT noone like a brother can display an MILITARY UNIFORM or a SUIT w/ quite the same style. I mean, even an average brother can make a suit sing and a uniform whistle. ummm ummm ummm

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know about any of you, but I have yet to see a brotha with pretty feet. Please if you are gonna do the sandals, please don't purchase the ones with the toes hanging out!!

Since this topic came up, I had to share this definate NO NO with everyone...

Last Sunday at church, a man showed up in a burnt orange shiny sateen (sp?) suit on. the collar was a little darker than the rest of the suit. Brother also had on some darker burnt orange Gators!!

Lovely 08-03-2001 12:49 AM

I saw a brother jogging with a rainbow sweat band- yuck.
I saw a brother with a long tail in the back-not even at the nape of his neck, this tail came out of the middle back of his head- I wanted to cut it soo bad.
I hate shags, tails, and though I've seen some good lookin brothers with dreads and braids I like a clean shaven- FOI kinda brother.

1ofethelsivies 08-03-2001 04:20 AM

I am not feeling the Fat Albert Gear. Who in the Hell came up with that. The worst is to see a fat man wearing it...he makes himself a walking target http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Any guy that still wear one leg up & one leg down....PLAYED OUT.

BUT THE WORST...THE VERY VERY VERY WORST...I mean this is bad this should be one of the 10 Commandments & #1 at that...is a man that wear colored contacts....this is the absolute worst.

I met the finest brotha on the face of the earth and I was really feeling him until one day he showed up wearing colored contacts. I was so embarassed to be seen with him but most of all I was embarassed for him.

Men who wear:

those NASTY Coogi sweaters that I thought MUST have gone out of style when Biggie died

sunglasses with any gold ornamentation on them- tacky

MEN WITH MULLETS! I WENT DOWN SOUTH AND I SAW BLACK MEN WITH MULLETS! And them thangs had ta be on purpose, not like they forgot to get a haircut. I spent the whole time staring, and on the inside I was yelling "CUT YA MULLET SON! CUT IT"

Men with perms. I don't care how long and thick the hair is, I don't like it. WOMEN have long hair, not men.

None of these dudes can ever get any play!

Okay, and that's all of it. Honest, lol.

I totally agree with you on this on!!!

Okay, my ultimate pet peeve are men who wear biking shorts. It just looks so disgusting to me. I realize that men have to keep their stuff tight while bike riding, but PLEASE, I repeat, PPLLEEAASSEE wear some shorts on top of them. I don't need to see every "inch" of you.

I can't stand to see a brotha in
1) a dress shirt with no t-shirt underneath or who's wearing a t-shirt that you can see has writing on it under the dress shirt! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif
2) suits that are burgundy, gold, orange, yellow, purple, teal-rainbow suited brothas
3) men with long azz finger nails-eeeeoooowww
especially the pinky!
4) dirty or frayed cuffs on a dress shirt
5) turned ova shoes
and the one I absolutely loathe
6)G-STRING OR BIKINI BRIEF SWIMWEAR--I just really don't wanna know that much about your boys while I'm at the beach

lovele1978 08-06-2001 01:39 PM

I total agree with you ladies!! Overalls on men should be left in the 80's unless you work on a farm, and even then it's not totally acceptable. Sandals are ok, as long as it does not show too much foot http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif. I absolutely hate when men try to rock those superfly, pimpdaddy suits (in aqua, green, yellow) and top it off with a hat. It has always been tacky and always will. Coogie sweaters, why?? I was in the mall the other day and saw a guy in the whole suit (long-sleeve top, bottom and hat), hello it's august!!!

lil bit 08-06-2001 01:45 PM

I just realized that we had the same screen name. I guess great minds do think alike. I've only posted a few times under this name, so I'll change it today. kay???

LI84, don't hate on the Coogis; I used to work at a department store in '93 and those sweaters were selling for $295 each. Every time I sold one, I knew my commission was secured.

Oh, you're gonna hate me, cause I got a perm AND a mini-mullet--AND LOVING IT!! I'm trying to have my hair grow long enough so that I can have it slicked on the front and sides and a mullet in the back that touches the collar (kinda like Gene Rayburn's hair circa 1975). Oh, that will be lookin' TIGHT!

BTW, in Biblical times, long hair on a man was a symbol of masculinity (case in point: Samson).

Question for you all: I tend to wear the following; what do you think of this:

Button-down shirts with khakis or cotton slacks.

SWEATER VESTS (I LOVE sweater vests); I wear button-down vests if I am wearing a tie and pullover V-necks if I am wearing an open collar. In summer I wear them over golf shirts or T-shirts, even with shorts so I can have the Doug Funnie look.

Shoes: plain black Oxfords or casual brown patent leather or suede. If I am wearing khaki colored slacks, I wear the burgundy dress shoes w/tassels.

Suits: mostly single breasted, but I do have some double-breasted in black and gray

Shirts: oxford mostly, but I love wearing rounded collar shirts with a tie bar.

As you can tell, I dress rather plain, but I like it

Oh, and I wear honey-hazel contacts--though folx say I look like I am possessed--I always tell them that I am about to "Hulk-out"

Nice taste and clean cut.

I used to find brothers with shaved heads really attractive, but now I am finding brothers with semi-big hair more and more attractive each day.

Black preppies

If the brotha has the body for it, I don't mind preppy clothing at all within reason. I'm not talking what I call the effeminate type of preppy, such as Belgian loafers on men, excessive pastels and Stubbs & Wootton gear.

A shaved head is a wonderful thing. Otherwise, a nice, tight fro. Facial hair trimmed within reason.

I just think that masculine elegance equals sartorial conservatism. A well-dressed man, IMO, NEVER wears shiny tight shirts, gators, or bright colors except in certain situations (read: NPHC fraternity-related events. ;) )

ETA: These are a women's pair of Belgian shoes, but imagine them on a man. A little bit, err, geigh.
