Northern Preppy vs. Southern Preppy
The difference between Northern Preppy and Southern Preppy was mentioned in the "Popped Collars" thread. I am familiar with the Northern Preppy look, but I'm not familiar with the Southern Preppy look. Could someone in the know please compare and contrast the two for me?
Thanks! |
Well-to-do Southerners send their children to Northern schools. Those folks tend to wear polo shirts and loafers and think they're living the good life. I, personally, think the main difference is that in the North we don't wear overalls but Southern preppy folk iron their overalls.
-Rudey --Was that a joke? Perhaps not but we'll never know :) |
Northern preppy: Pink polo shirt/no pocket khakis/boat shoes (no socks)
Southern preppy: Light blue/yellow Izod shirt/cargo short khakis/sandals And overalls. All day, every day  |

I dont know about the south but at my MA prep school abercrombie and jcrew were the staple stores everyone who was someone shopped. So yeah lots of khakis and polo shirts.

izod? lol. well, if i were in Mississippi i'd say that's a definite match (i say that b/c @ the cotton bowl this is ALL i saw.) in texas for the most part, guys wear kenneth cole and polo (dont forget to roll the sleeves!)....put that with a pair of 'trendy' denim jeans and some nice shoes, and you have your 'typical' texas preppy boy. no popped collars here in full force yet. i see a few, and i cringe and hope they will fade away very fast. (overalls only @ a&m... haha) edit: i forgot abercrombie. |

The glaring exception would be UVA, though. Maybe because it's in the south? Or because it's so darn hard to get into? |

I'm thinking of the 5th generations of Ole Miss or Auburn students... |

B) I wasn't just talking about families with money. You can go to Hofstra university out on Long Island in NY. Lots of kids with money...none of that mattered to anyone. C) And I guess Bush was an exception. D) Izod is sold in Sears. Do people accessorize that with NASCAR hats? -Rudey |
Duke? Vanderbilt? Just because it's not Ivy League doesn't make it not prestigious...
Also, I don't recall mentioning Izod... and I sure as hell don't claim GWB. Anyway, it doesn't really matter. There's always exceptions to everything. I could never go to school in the North (or live there, actually), and I know a LOT of Southerners who are the same way. |

Izod and Bush are in response to other posters. -Rudey |
Izod is the mass-produced knockoff that everyone and their brother can afford.
Lacoste is the real stuff. |

And, for the record, you will find Clemson, Auburn, Ole Miss, 'Bama, LSU, UGA, (insert Southern school here) students who are fifth and sixth generations. These old South families send their dollars and their children to the same schools they've all been attending forever. A high school classmate (who fits the description perfectly - money but not grades) went to the U. of Vermont. But she is not what I would call Southern. I'd rather go to a Southern school any day o' the week, and it's not because I couldn't get into any others... I applied to thirteen colleges and all of them were below the Mason-Dixon line. It's a preference. (And please keep in mind, in reference to GWB and Texas preppy, that Texans themselves define their own category - you can't really always lump them in with Southerners. They are a group all their own in many ways....) To address the real question: Preppy around here is a Polo shirt, state flag belt, khakis, Rainbow flip-flops or boat shoes. Add a faded baseball hat for casual days and a pair of Crokies for your sunglasses and you're all set. There will be no flipping up of the shirt collars.... |

-Rudey --Except he flips up his collar (plural only if he wears 2 polo shirts) because he's got attitude |

Izod, Lacoste.....I dont wear em, just making the observation
Almost half of my alma mater's enrollment was Northern, if we're still talking about the Mason-Dixon line and not 'well, its in the North but its not really Northern ' or 'its in the South but I wouldnt consider it Southern ' |

Drawl = retarded Souther boy = retarded chump And any day anyone from the South can take a joke, would be a fantastic day. -Rudey |

And like BrownEyedGirl, I would take class, a Southern accent and manners over "attitude" any day of the week. :D |

And just for the record...I was accepted to MIT, Yale, Carnegie Mellon, and Stanford (among many others). Where did I go? The University of Alabama. |

For the record, I don't have a clue what Lacoste is or crokies or rainbows are...and I thought Reefs went out of style years ago! As for Vera Bradley, her stuff reminds me too much of something my mom would carry around with her, so I'm not into that either. I must be a loser because I shop for my work clothes at Limited, Express and Ann Taylor Loft (occasionally I'll find something in the regular Ann Taylor). My casual clothes come from the Gap, Limited, Express, AE and Abercrombie. But I don't consider myself to be a prep, so maybe that's why I'm perfectly happy with what I wear. |
at least we have Sweet Tea
boys in NC wear lots of polo, JCrew type brands, and recently I have seen alot of those Alligators shirts.
I have never seen anyone but old men wearing Izod. Girls on my campus have been dressing (especially since we're having a warm spell) in short skirts or bathing suits under there clothes. not my fav look, but they can pull it off. By the way the south rocks, and I don't claim Bush as a southern!! |

This thread is cracking me up. If you guys haven't done so, read The Official Preppy Handbook. |

The word in the South is "network". Many, MANY people make their "selection for connection". It's all about what the future holds for that individual especially if nepotism is the future. |

You're kidding, right? If someone wears a state flag (or any flag ) belt up here, he will be called a hoosier* and rocks will be thrown at him. *Not a person from Indiana, where I'm from. |

Amen! When iw as in college early 90s i went to a soutehrn school and i am from so calif. Arkansas was full of izod, khaki, birks, loafers( Eastlands), oxford colored buttons downs , jeans, a lot of very preppy style clothing. I loved it ! and i do love a southern boy with class, a drawl and well mannered too vs. from where i am from in so calif! i will take a southern classed boy any day! |

It is! I love South Carolina's state flag; very cool looking. On an unrelated note, when I first heard SC referred to as the palmetto state, I immediately thought of palmetto *bugs* (the superhero cockroaches we had when we lived in Miami that can only be killed by a nuclear blast). I was afraid to go there! |

And I'd rather shoot myself in the foot twice than to date a preppy geek. I am so thankful to live in a land free from IZOD and Khakis. Barf. |

Likes guys with that thug appeal.... |

I keep cracking up at everyone who mentions Izod. If I'm not mistaken the reason why the two get confused is because one had a share in the other's brand in the American markets until now - Lacoste got their name back and that's why there are more lacoste stores in the US. -Rudey --Back to investment banking... |

Those who have no charm can't possibly understand how truly wonderful it can be! |
Ahh but so many southern gals complain about southern boys on this site . . it makes you wonder.
Maybe all guys are kind of the same . . . minus the odd southern accent y'all have as typified by Charlize Therizon in the movie Bagger Vance? Quote:

Just post pics of regional preppy attire.
Girls might be able to extrapolate random clothing brands into highly visual outfits . . but most of us guys are kind of handicapped. |
