Popped collar?
I forget what link I followed that led me to this disturbing fashion trend...but are people REALLY walking around with their shirt collars up again???
It was lame in the 80's and its only purpose was to hide a sucker bite. |
I think people are wearing shirt collars up again. I find it, and anything else associated with the 80s, frightening.
|
why???
gross.
|
I hate that look
All the boys ( not the men) on my campus are sporting the popped collar look, and I can't stand it. It is super slob, especially since they pair it with ratty jeans.
|
Good grief!
For YEARS, Mr. Silver has been VERY specific about how he likes his polo shirts washed, dried, and finally hung on special hangers with the collar folded down and the top button buttoned....
SUDDENLY, he wants his shirts hung differently with the collars up so that he won't have a crease on his collar line! I have four little words for my husband.... DO YOUR OWN LAUNDRY. Silver |
I never stopped doing it.

Wearing your collar up goes great with bermuda shorts, if you're into that sort of thing.
|
i think this is what you are talking about:
http://www.yaletoday.com/fusetalk/me...&threadid=3471 this is totally something i could see rudey writing ;) and we DEFINITELY have these kinds of guys at IU so i'm sure every other campus has them too |
We have tons of guys on campus who do this...and I'll do it from time to time with the right polo, like my new lobster one from J.Crew. :D

And that article was sent around my firm LOL -Rudey |
The 80's are back and with a vengance!!!
Really, I think all the designers are running out of ideas, soon they'll be bringing back the acid wash jeans and leg warmers!!! Bring it on!! |
All the guys on my campus are popping their collars... and wearing pink shirts. As if we didn't have enough rumors about Elon boys....

i rock the collar |
Oh my gosh, that article is so funny!!!
As for the collars, it's pretty lame on most guys, but on the right one... yum! And so true, it's better than some recent trends. Trucker hats? SO played out... |

Can I just say I hate all things 80s?! I so wish it still was the 50s type stuff. |
I'm not afraid to admit it...
I like popped collars. No, let me rephrase.... I love popped collars. And I'm GLAD they're coming back because in my opinion they never should have gone out of style.
Know what else? I hope when the cold weather returns, people wear their popped-collar Polo shirts over a turtle neck (with the collar scrunched down; not folded) and under an oxford cloth button-down shirt. So there! :p |

I'm currently rocking the DOUBLE popped collar...one on top of the other. So there. :p

Oh, see - I don't think women can do it though.
On a guy - the right guy - it has that certain, "I don't give a f*** - I know I'm cool" kind-of look. But on a woman, it just looks sort of middle-aged and L.L. Bean-ish or something. I might retract that statement if it is a cute Lilly Pulitzer polo though - I'll have to think about that one. |
Ok the popular guys in highschool went through this phase my senior year (01-02). There were fights over who in the school was "cool" enough to wear their collar popped while the rest of us just though they were idiots. Nobody thought it was an ok trend but them. Yeah. I just associate it with them anytime I see it. I hope that doesn't come in style around Mercer, it just looks so ridiculous that I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face.

If you want to get technical about it...many of the styles of the '80s were actually a throwback to the '50s and '60s. I know it's impossible to believe, but it's true--the '80s just gave it their own rather interesting interpretation. Every "new" style is really nothing new...it's been done before, but designers are very crafty about twisting it a little so that it's unrecognizable to the general public. We think of bell-bottoms and platform shoes, say, as belonging in the late '60s and early '70s, but my grandmother was wearing those things in the '30s and '40s. Think about it...in the '50s and '60s, we had popped collars, big hair, and lots of denim. What did we have in the '80s? Popped collars, big hair, and lots of denim. ;) |
The difference b/w the two that I see is that in the 50s and 60s everything was very elegant and classy - lots of straight lines with the pencil skirts and a-line skirts to complement any body type. Now, I'm not seeing much of the linear stuff and the pencil skirts ('cause it's driving me nuts trying to find a gray one with the slit up the front...if anyone knows of a store that has them please let me know!), but I am seeing tons of the ruffley stuff that I associate with the 80s. I HATE RUFFLES! And polka dots...I know they had lots of polka dots in the 50s and 60s, but I associate it with the 80s when it becomes obnoxious as opposed to being classy. And of course the hot pinks and greens and flouescent colors I'm seeing everywhere....that's very 80s-ish to me as opposed to being 50s or early 60s. I am seeing a lot of paisley as well...I don't know if that was around in the 50s but I sure remember it from the 80s.
I have seen some cute dresses that I think fit better with the 50s style - the ones that have the "piping" (I don't know what you'd call it) along the sides, such as a black dress with white satin trim. Make sense? Again, I think it just depends on what piece of clothing you're looking at. If you have a denim a-line skirt, I'd probably see it as 50s style. If you have a denim a-line skirt with hella ruffles, I'd see it as an obnoxious 80s style skirt. I definitely agree with you about how everything just kind of gets recycled around again...I guess I just see this new style as more of a throwback to the 80s with very little 50s thrown in...I think a lot of the stuff in the fall line was more 50s-ish. But that's just me...I'm not a fashion major but I'm a hard-core shopper and I am very picky! |

HC people from the South aren't allowed to wear it? |
Quote:
All the Chicago suburbian kids can also get away with it because it's a nouveau riche "I wish I was blue blood" type of look. GP, who is thinking about popping her LaCoste today ;) |
But Southerners have that old-money, country club look down pat. Yankee prep and Southern prep are two totally different styles, BUT the popped collar has a place in both fashion genres.
**And you're probably wearing it with WHITE SHOES... BEFORE EASTER*** Edited to add: The popped collar is a definite trend in my sorority, worn with the ribbon pearls. |
As I type this, I am wearing my blue and pink striped Polo shirt with the collar popped. And a pair of khaki shorts. And a pair of Docksiders. Without socks. Yes, I'm channeling my 80's self today. So there! :)

I don't really think that this is a new trend in some places...I've been wearing my collar popped since I was about 3 years old. |
well...i live in south this popped collar thing has been around for a bit...nothing really new to me...

I saw this kid at the bar last night wearing two LaCoste shirts, both with the collars popped. It looked completely stupid, no offense guys, one might have been ok, but two was way overboard. Especially since one was yellow and the other was green, EWW.
|
ech. If I see one more assclown with a popped collar today, Im gonna take his stupid fishhook out of the brim of his stupid hat and jam it in his stupid eye. Leave it in college.
Seacrest out |
Pop your collar all day everyday....
