Man on Fire-Denzel Washington

Is he the "villain" in this film? It seems to be action-packed. :D

Intense1920 04-20-2004 12:01 PM

Oooooh, I really want to see this movie.

Steeltrap 04-20-2004 12:11 PM

Without giving too much away

Denzel isn't the villain. It's a remake of a 1987 film that involves the guy who's playing the Denzel role (Scott Glenn) trying to rescue a kidnapped heiress (Jade Malle in the original, Dakota Fanning in this remake).
In the original, the girl is much older. I think she was 12 or 13. Dakota Fanning is probably only 10 years old or so.

1browngirl 04-20-2004 12:23 PM

i can't wait to see this! Love me some Denzel!!!

ladylike 04-20-2004 02:49 PM

Denzel!! *whew* Denzel!!

Now I love me some Denzel and everything but errr-uhh-ummm.....when are they going to stop offering him "cop roles?"

Let's see....he's been in Training Day (cop), Out of Time (cop) and now Man on Fire (cop-ish).

Don't get me wrong, I plan to go see the movie 'cause I love me some Denzel. :) I was just wondering if Hollywood is running out of ideas (with the dirth remakes and reimaginings) when it comes to good solid roles for Black men.

Cali_Keisha 04-20-2004 09:47 PM

I can't wait to see this movie, it looks so good. The little girl in the movie can act to, I've seen her in a couple of other movies, she is sooooo cute.

Love_Spell_6 04-29-2004 03:02 PM

Luv me some Denzel...

I saw it and lovededed it! :D I thought Denzel played an excellent role....better than he did in Training Day. I actually may try and see it again. Yall...it's worth paying the money! Go see it! :p

SKEEphistAKAte 04-30-2004 11:34 AM

I saw it on Monday. The acting was good, but I didn't really appreciate the premise of the movie. Denzel isn't the villain he is more like a little caucasian girl's modern day man-mammy. I'll leave it at that.

Impressed SF 04-30-2004 11:38 AM

Two Thumbs Up!!

The movie was really good. He was a conflicted soul that never thought he could love again until he met ole girl. I think everyone should see this movie. Definitely a DVD catch!:D :D :D :D :D

SKEEphistAKAte 04-30-2004 11:44 AM

Did you all know that there was a love scene that was deleted from the movie? The actress who played the mom in the film talked about it on The View the other day. She gushed about how she had so much fun making the scence with Denzel.

By the way she was acting...I thought one was coming...but hey the movie was already long enough LOL.. and I'm sure she did have fun making it ;)

It's funny you say that. My husband and I are sitting in the theatre and he keeps whispering "Oh shoot, they are about to do it." But it never happend. It seems like they were going to a couple of times. So when ole girl said that on The View I understood. I wonder why they decided to take it out- hold up, no I don't I know why. I just wonder who's decision it was to delete it.

it was Denzel's decision to cut the scene, according to news reports on either Tom Joyner or Russ Parr on Wednesday (I forget which one reported it.)

Did they give a reason?

No, they sort of hinted that D.W. untimately wasn't comfortable with the image of him "sexing da white woman" up on the big screen, or how that scene would be perceived by his fans. They said the same thing happened with Pelican Brief? with Julia Roberts back in the early-90s. He did a sex/romance? scene with Roberts but it never made the final film. ...don't know if he had as much veto power on that edit, but they said this was most definitely his call with Man on Fire.

...but of course you gotta take morning radio entertainment "news" for what it's worth. So who ultimately knows. Maybe Mrs. D.W. wasn't havin' it.

Mrs. D.W. : Denzel, did you do this scene?
D.W.: Boo, you been hoodwinked, bamboozled, run-amok. I didn't land on her, Plymouth rock did :p

Whether it was Mrs. D.W. or DW's decision, I am glad that it wasn't in the film.

James 05-01-2004 09:43 PM

I think the sex scene would have taken away from the story because it would have made the mother/wife and Denzel's character much less sympathetic.

When would he have slept with her? Before the child gets kidnapped while she is married? Or after the child is kidnapped? I wouldn't have liked either he mom or Denzel if that had happoened.

So that might have been the reason for the decision more than any black-white issues. Sex being sex and all :)

And as far as cop roles for the black man, I thinkit might be that we are over burdened with cop roles in general. They just make it look to exciting to be a police officer . . all that drama and gun-play.

And because of which I have to deal with some cop walking up to my car with "shooters"glasses on and a hand on his gun to give me a ticket for a burned out tail light. They believe this stuff.

*Bells ringing* That's possibly why I might not see this because it parallels a real life situation that I'm aware of.:o

It would have been better for me if the story was realistic. Black man running all over town avenging the murder of a little white girl, that he is in no way related to. Please  .

You say it would have been better had the story been realistic...but you keep on mentioning that it was a little "white" girl being rescued by a Black man... ...and I don't know how many people in law enforcement you know...but if a death occurs and they were closely related..the color of the "child" is the last thing that matters... and if you want it to be realistic....you should probably watch the news....its in the movie theatre because its a MOVIE;)

Key words in your post: Closely Related
Key words in my post: Closely Related

In the movie Denzel's Character was a hired bodyguard, not her father or uncle. There was no relation. Like I said it is unrealistic. I will ignore you comment about it being a movie

I was referring to being closely related to the CASE, not in terms of family..again, race isn't a determining factor on how close you get to a case..or a person in a particular case...especially when its a child.

This dialogue between us is actually funny...I think had a white person come on this board and made those comments about a little black girl....some folks would have gotten offended...which is why I posed my initial question to you..

But its all good...it was a GREAT movie!!! THe older Denzel gets..the better he gets..

I'm not so sure I agree with that statement. I think that the idea of a White man (or man-mammy was the term I used in my original post) avenging the murder of some little black girl is probably even more unrealistic than this storyline. If a white person came on the board and said that it was, I wouldn't be offended.

Similarly, I've also made it known that it is not my mission in life censor my words so as to not upset people. I say what I feel, I'm honest about race relations and talk about it as I see it. If someone is living their life wearing rose colored glasses and gets offended by my comments that is too bad.

We do agree on one thing...Denzel does get better and better. Too bad the scripts for these movies can't keep up with his advancing ability.

Anyhow, I'm with you NuQueen, I appreciate his decision to keep that scene out of the movie.

I've heard nothing but great reviews from people about this movie. They say Denzel must have been working out because he looks good enough to eat. I dont care, that man is FIIONE!!! I love me some Denzel. Whew!! got a sistah sweating just thinking about him in Mo' Betta Blues.

mccoyred 05-11-2004 05:03 PM

As much as I LOOOOOVVVVEEEE me some Denzel, this movie ranked right down there with He Got Game .

I am glad that he DIDN't do the love scene with the mother. THAT is one of the reasons why I respect Denzel as a Black Actor. Unlike some others who will remain nameless *cough* Larry Fishbourne *cough* Wesley Snipes *cough* he cares about the image he is portraying when it comes to on-screen sex scenes.

I was also dissapointed because the movie started off very slow and just never tickled my fancy. I fell asleep twice during the movie. YAWN!!

ladylike 05-12-2004 10:03 AM

Welll....

Objectively speaking I think the movies plot would have improved dramatically if there were shots of a shirtless Denzel with back muscles rippling and biceps bulging. In my humble opinion that would have brought a new depth to the film. :D :p

AKA2D '91 06-01-2004 09:42 AM

I saw it last night on DVD. I think the scenes were probably deleted because the movie was TOO DAYUM LONG! If they would have kept the scenes leading up to the scene and everything else after the sex, that movie would have been at LEAST 3 hours long.

I figured Marc Anthony had something to do with the kidnapping. Didn't Marc accuse the wifey of affairs? Did that mean he knew about the scenes we did not see? I THOUGHT that Denzel and the mom may have known each other PRIOR to Denzel taking the job. Was Mickey Rourke the family's attorney?

Denzel Washington's son among non-draftees to sign

St. Louis draft picks: Tye Hill Joe Klopfenstein Claude Wroten John Alston

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Signing the son of actor Denzel Washington on Monday ensured the St. Louis Rams of making a splash the day after the NFL draft ended.

John David Washington, a 5-foot-10, 200-pound running back was among 10 undrafted players signed by the Rams. He played for Division II Morehouse College last year.
