DUKE Gets Rid of 8 AM Classes
Duke University Cuts 8 A.m. Classes
Sun Apr 18, 3:44 PM ET Add Health - AP to My Yahoo! DURHAM, N.C. - Duke University is eliminating 8 a.m. classes and trying to come up with other ways help its sleep-deprived students, who too often are struggling to survive on a mix of caffeine, adrenaline and ambition. http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...ess_students_1 |
Excellent idea. Now if only my boss would follow suit....
|
I remember being a freshman in college and I thought I was going to be able to handle a 7:30AM English 100 class... you know, because in high school we started the day at 7:30.
Riiiiight. I think I only went to that class 40% of the time. After that semester I never signed up for a 7:30AM class ever again and I instructed all my friends to do the same. If only other campuses would follow suit... |

I struggle to make it to my 9:30am classes... I can't even imagine 8am or 7:30am
Good move Duke!!! |
ok wow. that is really cool of duke, i usually dont hit the sack until about 5 or 6 am on fridays!!!
|
I'm such a morning person-I love taking AM classes! I'm glad I don't attend Duke! I always enjoyed scheduling all of my classes in the AM so I could have the rest of my day to study/do homework/or sleep! By the mid-afternoon/evening hours roll around I'm practically useless anyway! I'd hate to have to push back my day & start @ 10AM instead of 8AM!
|
Most of the really smart kids I knew that really stood out never even went to class.

shoot... i always had at least ONE 8 am class a semester. This was because the graphic design department couldn't figure anything else out in terms of scheduling. You want to know what sucked... having art history at 8 am in the morning 3 days a week. ARGH!
course now i work at 8 am everyday now... before I got this job, I started at 6 am most days. now THAT sucks. |
Co-sign! It sucks having to be at work at 645am....especially when you have a 45 minute drive (could be longer if the border lineup is long or delayed)

I've been taking 8 o'clock classes for three semesters every day. At the end of the Fall '02 semester, I've said, no more 8 o'clock classes for me. I now have classes at 9 o' clock hour.

Duke is my hero!!!
|
Talk about conceding defeat. There was a movement a few years ago to create more early classes as a deterrant to drinking . . they figured if eveyrone had an early class they wouldn't party.
Goes to show that college administrators don't really have the pulse of college students. |
wow...colleges are open that early????
how long has this been going on? people actually do this stuff? isn't there some sort of law stating that classes start at 10 or 11 am and end at like 3pm? |
I have took classes from 8 AM to 6 PM and I like the morning classes, but it has to be on a subject that I like. If not, boring!

Good for Duke! :)
I had an 8 am class my first semester in college, and NEVER AGAIN!!!! My first class did not begin until at least 9. |
Only in college did I oversleep for a 12 NOON class. LOL
I hated 8:00 classes and 9:00 ones too except if they were my ed classes. |
Most of our classes started at 9, except for a few 8am ones here and there, like Chem lab.
|
The story is wrong!
Duke DID eliminate 8 am classes, they now begin at 8:30. But it wasn't b/c of sleep deprivation! See: http://www.dukenews.duke.edu/news/story_0404.html It's funny; I saw the information about this on CNN as I was sitting in my dorm room, thinking, "they're wrong!" I go to Duke and unfortunately, sleep deprivation was NOT on the tip of the administrators' tongues. |
If you think 8 am classes are bad, try being a nursing major where they think nothing of scheduling lectures/ labs/ clinicals for 7... as in 0700, 7 AM- YIKES. And if it was a clinical, we were expected to be there by 0630 (double yikes!) Sometimes I'm amazed that this night owl graduated!
|
My stepdad went to the same school I did, and when he was there he had a 7 AM class. Glad they don't have those anymore! :p
|
Hate to break it to ya'll but once you hit the "real world" you're going to have to be at work at 8 and you can't be in the jeans and t-shirt you threw on in 5 minutes, and it's not a 10 minute walk across campus to get there, it's a 45 minute drive AND you had to get two kids up and dressed and to latch key before you got to leave for work.
Think of early classes as practice for reality! I was a morning person, planned my classes from 8 am - noon every day. Studied for a couple hours after lunch, took a nap and had the whole evening to do whatever I wanted! It was great. I miss those schedules! Dee |
For some reason I could never make it to my 8 am classes. I was always exhausted. When, I got into the "real world" I was amazed that I could get my butt up and be at work anywhere between 6 and 7. (The workday didn't start til 8 but some of us would get there early to get a jumpstart on work.) I think the major difference was that since I was in my own place I could go to bed earlier and get more rest than I could when I lived in the dorms
