Just curious...

All situations are unique.

The Greek community as whole doesn't have consensus opinions . . . so reactions from the prescious few people that would care will vary.

Why did it rub you the wrong way when its none of your business?

And it depends on Delta Sigma Theta's policy.

KSUViolet06 04-17-2004 07:36 PM

That's not cool. Once you are initiated into Chi- O, you are Chi-O for life. If she really did do this, shame on her. Just because the chapter is closed, doesn't mean a thing. When you join an org., you join it nationally, not just on a chapter level.

It is definitely looked down upon. I'm assuming the Deltas don't know she IS a Chi-O, because I'm 100% sure this wouldn't fly with them and would probably result in the revocation of her membership.

As a matter of fact I'd love a Delta's (or other NPHC's) input on the situation.

Clockwork08 04-17-2004 08:18 PM

It is hard to believe she became a Delta b/c The NPHC sororities won't allow membership to those already initiated in NPC or another NPHC sorority. Besides that fact, I believe your sorority membership is for LIFE, after all these people are your sisters and you don't quit family. And, I would never would want anyone who was a member of another sorority to join my org b/c obviously they do not understand the importance and responsibility of membership if they are now trying to join another organiztion.

Clockwork08 04-17-2004 08:24 PM

something tells me the probably don't know about Chi Omega

adpiucf 04-17-2004 08:28 PM

Is it possible she was a pledge and never went through initation of Chi Omega before the charter was taken?

As you say, it is a small school. If the woman was an initiate, the other sorority would know.

msn4med1975 04-17-2004 08:50 PM

I think Clockwork has said what I would say about this. I can say that around the campus I'm on yes women carry NPC organization pari while they were still in process. It always struck me as strange but it's not my process so I couldn't really get upset.

The integrity of the greek system is all of our business. It's my understanding that there is a rule against being initiated into both an NPC and NPHC sorority. I don't know exactly where this rule exists, but I think that most of us here would agree that it does exist.

Sisterhood is supposed to be for a lifetime, not until someone feels like joining a different group. Assuming that this woman was initiated into Chi Omega, she should certainly not be a Delta. The problem here, at least in my opinion, is that there's no easy way for members of one organization to know whether someone has been initated into another, which is unfortunate.

Um, hi, news flash, they haven't been called "pledges" in years. "New member" is the correct term. If they were new sisters, "newly initiated members" would be more proper.

So if that's the proof your'e going from, you don't have any reason to think that the young lady in question is initiated.

ETA: OP (original poster) if you're not in a sorority yourself (which it doesn't appear you are from your other posts on GC), you really should stay out of this. It isn't any of your business, especially if you don't know what really happened. It's more perpetuating gossip than anything else.

Stacekat 04-17-2004 09:09 PM

we don't use the word "Pledges" any more. We do call them new members. We call the existing members initiates or actives. But new members is a perfectly acceptible derivative of pledge.

They do. There are also many who drop out, and continue to carry around the paraphernalia. I don't know why, but they do!

New members and "pledges" are interchangable, as we are phasing out the word "pledge" among most of the sororities.

I appreciate your coming on here to ask your question-- no, an initiated woman cannot pledge/initiate into another NPC or NPHC sorority. But we don't have the facts behind the Chi O chapter closing, nor know if the woman who is now a Delta was initated by Chi Omega. You would best get this answered by asking the woman herself or the campus Greek Adviser.

I hope you get your question answered, but outside of the "can she or can't she be both," we can't provide any additional help or information.
Good luck.

AXWhoah 04-17-2004 09:12 PM

Because you mentioned a google search I thought that I would try one myself. If you are really trying to keep things anonymous you shouldn't post any names. I put what you wrote in your post into google and in 13 seconds found the school....

Delete my post? or this thread? Only a moderator from Greek Life can delete this thread.

You've already opened up cans of worms. So what's done is done. Thanks for your help.

oh well. i guess i'm just confused. ARGH.

I am a moderator but only have "moderating super powers" in the Delta Sigma Theta forum. The Greek Life mods are Amycat412, ZetaAce, and John Hammell.

Tom Earp 04-18-2004 12:21 PM

Chump Senior Member?:(

Everyone on here went through the process of being on GC!:)

Mods are just people too, not robotrons who answer questions. :D

As CrimsonTide4 said, Mods can only Moderate those threads that they are Moderators of. We are all leary about deleting any posts or threads without a concentiouse of opion. The Admministrater has the final say and will be abided by everyone on GC!

Edited to add, You as the individual poster can edit your post.

33girl 04-18-2004 05:38 PM

If she was not initiated before the chapter's charter was lifted, not only could she pledge an NPHC group, but she could also pledge another NPC group the day after it happened if she wanted. The closure of a chapter immediately "breaks her pledge."

cherrycola 04-18-2004 06:34 PM

not to be completely clueless, but I don't understand the point of posting all this on an open forum unless you want to out this girl. I really don't think it is any of your business, it is between the Delta ladies and this girl.

alphagambaby 04-18-2004 06:50 PM

something I noticed...
you've also stated in past posts where you went to school... if you're trying to protect identities, you might want to go back and edit some of your past posts too ;)

Why the hell are people giving this person a hard time because she is concerned about the integrity of Greek Life? I think we should be applauding this person.

Um, when you're giving enough identifying information about the person "in question" that people can figure out who they are by conducting a simple google search, that crosses the line. Especially when you don't have much info at all- not even knowing if they had been initiated or not. That's just creating gossip.

KD is right. If I was truly interested, the amount of information she's given could easily lead me to call or contact the chapter and inquire about this young lady. It would have been MUCH easier to just contact someone in the chapter or the young lady herself instead of bringing this here.

sweetnessfromga,

As no one else seems interested in answering THIS question, you can delete this entire thread by clicking on your first post in the thread, clicking on edit and following the prompts that will allow you to delete the entire thread.

FYI: If you are the original poster of a thread, you can delete the entire thread.

You can also edit any post you make on any thread simply by clicking edit on your post.

Just a correction - the thread deletion feature (via deletion of original post) by the person who started it (unless they're a mod) is disabled by the site administrator.

HOWEVER, you can still as adpiucf said click edit on your first post or any post while logged in, then remove any/all words. :) Posts can be deleted by the person who posted them if they are not the originating post in a thread.

eta: but yep, you can from the main Greek Life page click on the moderator names (amycat/ZetaAce) and then send user a pm to make a thread deletion request.
eta2: If identifying info has been posted carelessly then maybe whoever posted it won't get a job in military intelligence or the CIA; but then hey, neither will I! :) I'm sure no malice was intended by the poster at any point; so wouldn't want her to get heavy backlash. [Not suggesting anyone has been esp. unkind to her necessarily either, just making a general comment].

added later: By the time I'd finished typing those edits above, OohTeenyWahine has said what I was trying to get across above much more elegantly anyway.

I was just going to point out that it doesn't allow you to delete your own post if it's the first one in the thread.

Editing your posts is pointless if people end up quoting you anyway.

Guys, she's realized the error of her ways. And got the feedback she wanted. Be the better person and just leave her alone.

She came here asking for advice and some people chewed her out. That is my problem. This has happened before on other threads where the person asking is chewed out for their question, looking for advice. We need to stop this.

I very much agree that this thread needs to be deleted or closed down.

I didn't read that as asking for advice. What I read was someone basically going oh y'all this girl just ABANDONED her Chi Omega sisters after the chapter got closed and is now a Delta. I don't know the circumstances anymore than anyone on the board OTHER than what she has stated and that is where I think most posters are having a problem. If her campus is that small and she knew members of Chi Omega wouldn't it have been easier to approach them privately as opposed to posting on this board and then not really hiding what school/chapter she was referring to. At best it could have been if someone left an NPC and tried to join a NPHC what would happen. But the very specific identification of the "new members" and organizations are not allowing the "accused" their moment of privacy either.

Not trying to attack her by any means, it just seems it could have been handled better.
