"Going Greek" movie
Going Greek
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...1.LZZZZZZZ.jpg I was browsin' through The Movie Gallery the other day, grabbing movies left and right to take advantage of their 99cent new releases promotion and I came across the movie Going Greek... Well you should never judge a book by its cover, so despite the pictures and description, I decided to watch it and come up with a real conclusion of my own... The description of the movie is: College freshman Jake finds himself pledging the wildest fraternity on campus as a bid to help his geeky cousin get in. Along the way, he finds himself in a romance with a girl who hates fraternities--and as the raunchy tests to get in get wilder and wilder, Jake actually finds himself enjoying the ride. Wellll I just finished watching it and I had mixed feelings on the movie... First of all, 90% of Greek life which the movie shows are very graphic examples of extreme hazing.. This includes branding, kidnapping, scavenger hunts, getting the sh*t beat out of each other, among many others... Attempting to look past this, this movie is about Jake, a star high school quarterback who in hopes of breaking a record, let down his friend and ended up also hurting himself, losing his scholarship to big college... He goes to another college where he finds himself rooming with his cousin. The cousin is a bit of a nerd and is all about joining this one fraternity on campus... Apparently he's a legacy.. Anyway, somehow Jake promises to go through rush with his cousin even though he doesnt want to, meets a girl who hates fraternities and ends up pledging because he is told that if he doesn't join, (he is needed for football) then his cousin doesn't get in... He sees this as an opportunity to make up for letting his old friend down and toughs it out through 'hell week' and other abusive events.. I must admit that this was quite a funny movie, despite the stereotypical approach it uses to show greek life... It also attempts to show togetherness and brotherhood as the pledges all stick together to help each other out... Other than that I don't really know what else to say.. has anyone else seen this movie? What are your opinions? Many of you guys would be shocked, thats for sure... -Matt |
Great movie, I bought it and love it.
|
Well whether it's hilarious or not...if it supports the stereotypes, I don't think I care to watch it.

Come on guys...there have been 234298423 movies made that were either about greeks or starred greeks or whatever. It's meant to entertain...this is not a big deal.
i thought "sorority boys" was hilarious, and "old school" is the best movie ever made. I saw some B-level movie in blockbuster called 'delta delta DIE' once...hehe thought that was probably not the most quality movie lol. |

The colors of Iota Chi Omega were definitely red and yellow as well...and many of the shots in the movie showed just the Chi and Omega. My boyfriend took great fun in pointing all of them out  Although I must say, the movie did crack me up!

I've wanted to see this. When did it actually come out? Maybe I'll rent that tonite! Also, maybe a Chi Omega had something to do with the production/writing of the film? It could be a possibility. |

I thought Going Greek was an awesome movie. We sat around and laughed our asses off the entire length of the movie.
I don't think it "inspires" hazing or anything like that, and as far as perpetuating fraternal stereotypes...face it...they're going to be here no matter what we do or how well the Greeks behave. Soooo deal with it and move on. ;-) |
Ah, it must be in the eye of the beholder!;)
How does this compare to the other Movies?????;) |
My friend was disgusted by the movie, also this movie is NOT closed captioned or subtitled, but I could kind of understand the movie i mean its obvious LOL.....but it should have deaf accessibility that was not RIGHT!!!

Play like a grown up and don't call people names and we won't have any issues. |

it was pretty low budget, extra features cost money
i'm sure they didn't exclude subtitles and captions to exclude those who don't speak english or have hearing problems. -Matt |
Going Greek Background
This film was filmed at UC Riverside (school scenes/football game) and USC (house scenes and party scenes) in September of 2000.
In the library scene, you may have noticed that has been in the movie Boys and Girls with Claire Forlani (the UC Berkeley Library scene) All the people you see in the cafeteria scene, outside of the dorm scene etc, are actually students of UC Riverside... If you don't believe me, here are some photos from my webpage that show we were there when they filmed the cafeteria scene and also the one where Jake walks into the large lecture hall (very steep btw) with the kegs attached to his legs. If that lecture hall looked rather familiar, it was the focus of the last scene in "Slackers" http://www.geocities.com/sniff009/Mo...ed_at_UCR.html As you all know the football game did not look very good because many people were away getting ready for Midterms and Thanksgiving break. During that scene, other than the guy that had a speaking part, they used brothers from Kappa Alpha Order. My guys thought it was hilarious. We were actually pretty surprised that they chose UC Riverside. I wish it was shot better though. I found myself in one scene and my old roommate in another, which came out kinda weird. Rumors had the movie budget at about 1 million dollars. As a UC Riverside student, I found it ironic, because A. Our Greek Popluation is not very high :-( B. We do not have a Greek Row and C. We don't have a football team :-( |

lol, nope, she's not a KD, hence why I said she's not my sister.

that movie was friggin hillarious. just bc it shows the stereo types and what not doesnt mean it is a bad movie. not everyone is that "typica frat boy/ sororawhore" so i dont see what the big deal with this movie is.
oh yea and speaking of "sororawhore" has anyone gotten that thing going around saying i am a sororiwhore and then goes on to say that i do this and i have that, like i only wear steve maddens and carry kate spade bags and i only sleep with fraternity guys and i bag on your house and things like that? my sorority found it funny, bc it is sooo not us. |
kddani- ah ok...well then whats this "sisterly love" talk? whatever I guess its none of my business.

However, I do agree the movie is hillarious. Question: Is your sorority (Sigma Nu Phi?) a local? |
