Friends from high school you found out is in your GLO
MY lil bro went to Regional COnvention, and one of his good friends from high school joined Delta Sig at another school.
That ever happen to any of you? Might not sound exciting, but I would be like WTF? |
Two girls I was in the senior choir and Folk Group with in high school are AGDs.
|
Stan,
I went to my 10 year high school reunion in 1995...and found out the guy who was next to me in the yearbook was a LXA at the University of Denver - and there were a couple other LX's from our class, all at different chapters (CU, CSU, and Oklahoma, I think)... None of us really knew each other all that well (it was a HUGE high school), and we all belonged to different "cliques" while in school, but, this was something that did bind us together, and it was quite amazing to see jocks, academics, cowboy, and a band geek (yep, that was me!) being able to really identify with one another.... |
There were a lot of people from my high school who attended my university, and a lot of us went Greek. I had sisters in my chapter I'd known since middle school, and Panhellenic sisters in the other chapters, too, that I'd known from various high school activities.... gives all-new meaning to the sorority being a "home away from home."
:) |
A few girls I went to H.S. with are Alpha Phis at Texas Tech.
Another gal is an Alpha Phi at Texas. I am sure there are others that joined at other universities, I just haven't seen them all in so long. Oh! I forgot! The mothers of several girls I went to H.S. with are also Alpha Phis. |
One of the reasons I joined Phi Mu was because of a (then) girl who had been in my HS Senior Home Room :).
She ended up being my GrandBig :) and closest sister in the chapter.... |
I found out that a girl that went to the same high school as me (but a grade younger) became a Chi Delt at Sonoma State. I saw her at greek sing one year when they all came down and it kinda blew me away cuz I totally recognized her. Small world. Now she is one of my sisters.
|
I went to HS with one of my sisters but we didnt talk much because she was a grade below me, it was purely by coincidence that we end up at the same college and part of the group that founded the chapter of my fraternity at my school. There are other girls that I went to HS with that joined my fraternity and I would have never thought of them as people who would go greek.
|
A lot of my classmates went to schools with no greek systems, or with greek systems that would soon be shut down, so there weren't too many that went greek. One friend was a Sigma Chi at Tulane, and one was an AEPi at Emory. I visited my friend at Tulane when I was a freshman (OK, I was also visiting Mardi Gras ;) ) and they were pretty cool.
|
I have several friends who are now in various NPHC organizations
Soror @ Lewis University (Illinois) Soror @ Bradley University (Illinois) Delta @ University of Michigan - Ann Arbor AKA in Indiana, not sure the name of the school Kappa @ Langston University (Oklahoma) Some of them I knew wanted to pledge once we graduated while others were a pleasant surprise! |
In Alpha Phi Omega, this happens a lot - because the high schoolers that are drawn to community service are also drawn to the service programs of APO.
I actually sit on the National Board of Directors with a former high school friend - the same friend who encouraged me to join. This is the first time that two folks from the same HS are on the Board at the same time. |
There were VERY few people from my high school who joined fraternities or sororities at any school - I think one Alpha Phi, one PhiMu and a couple of BSBs at my school, and an SDT at Cornell
So when I went through rsuh at ASA I was surprised to see a sweet, quiet, very poised and very ladylike girl from my street at home, who had been 2 years ahead of me in HS. She did NOT fit the extroverted image that ASA (justifiably) had. We used to ride together to day camp when we were kids, but I figured she wouldn't remember me at all. Well, I was lucky she did remember me, because when someone who didn't know me said "she seemed okay to me, but she was dating my best friend's boyfriend last year, and my friend said we should cut her. What was she like in high school?" this girl was able to pipe up that I was actually kind of a nerd, and not a wild Jezabel or anything. Saved my bacon. (It's sad but amazing the amount of totally-off-limits information about post-rush discussion you can squeeze out of girls after just a few hours at the Lion's Den) Oddly enough, the same thing happened in reverse the next year. A total stoner from the class behind me came through rush looking like Little Miss Prep. She wasn't mean, slutty or a potential trouble-maker, so I kept my mouth shut, figuring we all deserve a second chance. Ended up with us, and it worked out brilliantly - she was a wonderful addition to the sorority and ended up as a lawyer. I never said anything to her about her transformation, but once at lunch she did say something about how she "used to dress a lot differently" in high school, and I laughed a little too loudly, and she just sort of looked at me like "don't even go there." . |
A girl from my high school joined Sigma Kappa @ Georgetown College but I haven't seen her since the last Founders Day event I went to...we never really got along though. I'm glad we have something in common.
|
Not in my same sorority but I was looking at websites one night and one of them had a picture of this girl on the opening page... let's just say we weren't the closest of friends (her sister and I almost came to blows on the soccer field one day). It was still cool to find a picture of someone that I knew.
|
I was surprised to find that the younger sister of a girl I knew in high school joined my chapter--I was already out 2 years by then. I didn't think she really "fit" our chapter; the next year she resigned her membership.
Otherwise I haven't met anyone I know from my high school who was a Kappa elsewhere. Considering my hs was small (400 students total) and less than half of each graduating class went to a 4-year college, we had quite a few girls that went to my school go through recruitment. By the time I graduated, at least four were Alpha Gams, two were Sigma Kappas, one was a Gamma Phi and two were Kappa Deltas. |
The reason i'm a Sigma Nu is because of one of my best HS buddies. He was a year below me, but he played JV and Varsity football with me and my buddies.
He went to UT and pledged Sigma Nu to help revive their chapter. When i decided to rush for my last couple of years at A&M he asked me to check out Sigma Nu as a favor to him. I walked in the door the first day of rush and knew it's where i belonged. Kitso KS 361 |
I found out a friend of mine's older brother was also a Phi Sig when my chapter went on walkout to U. of Illinois. I was looking at their composites, when lo and behold there he was! He was sure surprised to see me when he showed up at the house later.
|
I was at a picnic in my parents' neighborhood after I graduated, and talking to a girl I didn't know who was heading off to Penn State. Gave her my standard, "look into sororities, but no matter what you do, join SOMETHING or you'll get lost up there" speech. Didn't mention ASA specifically, because greek letters wouldn't mean a thing to a high school girl in suburban Philadelphia. Plus there were 16+ groups, and what were the chance this girl would fit in at ASA or that ASA would even be the same group as when I was there?
A year or two later, I got a pledge envelope from my sorority soliciting funds for the PSU Dance Marathon, and on it was a handwritten note: "Hi! I took your advice and checked into sororities, and ended up joining ASA. Was surprised to see your picture in the scrapbook - didn't know you were an ASA, too." Felt all warm and fuzzy, and of course sent her a big (for me) check for Dance Marathon. |
Two girls from my high school joined Alpha Chi Omega. One of them is at Lynchburg College, and we were good friends in HS. Another girl (a year behind us) went Alpha Chi at Virginia Tech. We never really spoke in high school, but I see her car around every once in awhile with her AXO sticker on it and think of the bond we now share :)
|
A girl I played soccer with for 5 years joined Alpha Phi at Northern Illinois, another of her friends that I was in several classes with transferred to University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (Beta Alpha chapter) and joined there, and a girl in my show choir and on the soccer team for a year also went to UIUC and joined Alpha Phi.
I ran into the girl from the show choir while Christmas shopping and I mentioned I had joined Alpha Phi and she flipped out because she had joined too! It was pretty funny. I know several girls who joined SK, DG, DZ, AXO, SAI, APO, and an ex joined Phi Kappa Sigma. |
One girl from my high school class joined the Alpha Alpha chapter of Alpha Phi Omega at University of Illinois. I am sure there are others but none I can think of at the moment.
|
One of my friends from high school became a Zeta at the Univ of SC. I found out right after I crossed and waas determined to track her down.
|
Well, since I've graduated high school two years ago, I've only stayed in touch with one person (I learned who were my real friends and who weren't when I graduated and well, only one turned out to be) but I've seen some people I went to HS with at bars or just around the neighborhood when they are home. I know for a fact that one girl I went to highschool with is a tri-sig at Centeral Michigan University. A friend of mine who I didn't go to high school with she went greek and she's a AOPi at Grand Valley State University.
I did run into two girls who went to my high school that graduated a year after me during recruitment in the fall and one in winter. The one I ran into in the fall (I practically jumped on her bc we were on the school paper together in hs and it was the first time seeing her in so long) helped form our local on campus, Phi Alpha Epslion. The other girl went through Informal Recruitment this pass January. Unfortantly due to her grades last semester she wasn't able to get a bid. She did say she is going to go through Formal in the fall...we'll see if she finds a home. |
I don't move into the house until late this summer right before i start school in the fall... But after rushing the house that I signed, I found out that two of my friends from highschool were freshmen at Mizzou and had join alpha kappa lambda.. This definately had an impact on my decision to join, since there are so many houses on campus...
This isn't too surprising though, we went to highschool (3000 students in 3 grades) in the same town as university of missouri and it isnt rare for me to be hanging out at the house and run into girls from high school... A lot of the kids from both highschools go to Mizzou and a good # of them join GLOs... Kinda nice, kinda not.. Good to see familiar faces, but I kind of like the aspect of meeting all new people... -Matt |

One of my best friends who went to USC was also a Tridelt (we also preffed the same houses)! Also, my H.S. cheerleading squad big sis was the president of Tridelt at USC when my friend joined.
I have quite a few friends who went Greek at various school but those are the only Tridelts I know. |
a few of my friends from high school joined a.phi. we were really excited when we found out we followed the same path at different schools.
one was a friend since 3rd grade. and another is one of my closest friends. another was a classmate of mine that i just casually knew, but we were reunited at MGCA a few years back |

Anyway ... I don't think anyone I graduated with is an Alpha Xi Delta. Thats weird. I have younger girls from my school that are in my chapter though. |
One of my friends from SGA in highschool is a Chi O at University of Florida and so was her mom. Her mom sent me an owl when I pledged with a note saying that Ginny was a Chi O too. Pretty surprising. Tri-Delt is the big one at my highschool, lawdy, everyone and their sister is a TriDelt at UF or Stetson. From what I know (I went to a huge highschool) we have a few ZTAs, some Alpha Chis, an AGD, some SAIs, an AOTT, an ADPi and an AST.

In 2002 I went to MGCA in Chicago, IL with Panhellenic. One the last day that we were there, I ran into a girl that had gone to high school with me and she was an Alpha Phi at Case Western.
Last year, I went down to Columbus for a DG recruitment seminar and stopped by the Epsilon chapter house at Ohio State. I was looking at their most recent composite and saw a girl that I was friends with in Kindergarten. Turns out that her mom was a DG at my chapter in Akron and that she was a legacy. When I joined DG, I knew two girls in my chapter from HS (or HS activities). One was two years older than me and we were both in band. The other was a year older and we had met during All-Star Band (she went to a different school). I only know of a few people in HS that went greek but I'm sure that there were many along the way. LXA at Akron and Baldwin Wallace PKT at Akron, Ohio State, Baldwin Wallace EN at Akron, Mount Union, soon to be Indiana (that is if he joins) KKG at Akron, Ohio State ZTA at Miami of Ohio AZD at Toledo. Mount Union APhi at Case Western, Kent, Baldwin Wallace SAE at Akron Phi Mu at Case Western ATO at Miami FIJI at Cincinatti TKE at Ohio State I'm sure I'm leaving people out but its 10 til 3 in the morning....gimme a break :p |
I actually just found out this weekend that one of my friends from elementary school joined Alpha Sigma Tau at Eastern Illinois University. When I saw her I gave her a big hug & welcomed her to AST, I'm a member at UIC. She was shocked! It's so exciting. Plus, my brother just joined Chi Phi at his school, which also has an AST chapter, whom I will hopefully be joining when I transfer schools this fall.

I went to high school with one of my littles(same year), who had a little that went to our high school two years behind us who had a little who was also two years behind us. We have a little DeMatha lineage.
Small greek world. My spring semester freshman year i went down to the college park chapter for an initation party and i was being given a tour of the house by one brother. I ran into a guy i use to play baseball with and i was like what are you doing here and he said b/c phil another guy we use to played summer league with was a brother. i was like phil the guy that just showed me around the house was first base phil. We completely didn't reconize each other but it was cool because after that whenever i wanted to see how another chapter did something i asked phil and he always invited me down for initation and different event. |
None of my close friends in HS went greek, but I know of a few other people who went DG, ADPi, SK, and DDD at UT Knoxville and SK at UT Chatt.
Also, the summer of my Junior year, I was on a mission trip with my church and a girl I had been friends with who was three years younger than me announced that she was going to my university. I was all prepped to tell her to rush SK but I was a Rho Chi that year!! She did go through rush and long story short, she became my little sis and was a bridesmaid in my wedding. :D |
When I went through recruitment last fall, I spent a lot of time getting to know the sisters, and didn't really pay much attention to the other PNMs, so I was really surprised on bid night to see FIVE  other girls that had gone to my highschool! Two were my age, and the other three a grade younger...I was nervous about how it would work out, since we all had hung out with different groups, and were different people in high school, but its actually been a lot of fun, and I'm really happy to call all of them my sisters. :)
|
A girl who graduated a year after me is a Gamma Phi at the UW, I knew her through sports and her older brother was my lab partner in AP Physics. There are quite a few other Greeks, but that's for another thread that we already have. :D
|
bumping...
since i have been on facebook alot more lately and through friend requests, i found out that our class valadictorian is an SAE. others that i know so far include... fraternities: kappa sigma sororities: AXO, KKG, AGD, DDD, GPB |
Absolutely no other girls from my HS are DG's. :( The "popular" sororities in my hometown area include Zeta (every campus near me has a ZTA chapter), Tri-Delt, ADPi, and Phi Mu (those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head). That's part of the reason I want more Georgia DG chapters! I love my sisterhood and I want to share the love!
|
I haven't stayed in touch with many people from my graduating class (and there were only 40 of us!), but via Facebook I found out that one of my classmates, as well as a girl I used to play with when were were really little, are KKGs at Babson! That was kind of exciting :)
From my high school and church, I also know: - A Phi Sigma Kappa at MIT - A DG at Roanoke - An AOPi at Elon |
Alright, here's my list. This is from school and my Norwegian club:
- 2 Alpha Xi Deltas (Sonoma, Embry-Riddle) - Theta (Arizona State) - 2 Kappas (one at Santa Clara, and I went for her installation. Also UCLA) - 2 ADPis (GWU) - 2 ZTA (Pomona, Linfield) - Phi Sigma Sigma (Linfield) - Delta Sig (Davis) - LXA (UCR) - Alpha Phi (UCLA) - AXO (USD) - Pi Phi (UCLA) - DG (UCSB) - DDD (UCLA) - SK (Chico) |
