Good day
Threads may only be deleted by moderators or administrators. Though I believe I can see why it was deleted - (for not - to me - being about Greek Life/in violation of site rules) that is neither here nor there since only moderators and administrators may delete threads. And by extension only they may know exact reasons why a specific problem thread had to be removed. Meta discussions (those of board policy) are best raised with those who enforce/make those policies. I suggest if you want to know the answer to your question above you please PM those who can actually answer it, not post a thread to be seen by 30,000 GreekChat members who cannot.

Thank you for your gems of wisdom. I didn't even know that only mods and admins can delete threads, I thought anyone who was a senior member could delete them...

is it really that serious? we all know what the rules are....no need to be uppity because someone started a thread you didn't like. calm down, and breath. this is an open board, and last time i checked, this didn't violate TOS.

Uh...DUH. We all know that only mods and admins can do that.

I actually think this thread and not a PM suffices, though. Thanks for your concern.

You don't HAVE to bite your tongue. But, if you feel you MUST, there's no need to announce to 30,000 Greekchat Members that you are doing so. Don't be a fence straddler.

:)

Dear old Ace:

Please do not incite riots and anger the prison guards of GC (or their eloquent spokespersons). They may lock you up (or your threads) or send you off to another institution (ban you).

We don't want those things to happen, now do we? :D

"What's it to him anyway?"

Has been said very well by others already:

But if someone comes in just to p*** people off, and manages to destroy threads by getting them really off track (when "how does sorority rush works" becomes "u all is ugly except my sorority"), I think they ought to be banned. Yes, we have the option not to read his/her posts, or even not to take them seriously. But the more garbage posts this site gets clogged up with, the less likely I am, at least, to read them. It's like a listserv where people always post spam. Eventually, legitimate people take their conversations elsewhere. You have to make some effort to make your neighborhood nice, or people move out.

Smart :). There're possible dual ways to take that :D but either way I agree basically with what you say. I don't need everyone to agree with me - approval of others isn't important to my self-esteem any more than I imagine it is to yours. The world could be tedious if everyone agreed with each other! That said there are ways of pleasantly sharing different opinions and... ways of doing something else. FuzzieAlum still said it better than me (can also substitute word banned with moderated there).
You make a good point.

Peace,

Richard.

Actually, I think you've defined the problem -- and the differences -- very well.

We should feel free to disagree in a respectful manner, however those who "pick fights just to pick fights" may well ruin the experience for others. I don't think that's anyone's right.

Looks like people are stuck on yesterday's topic.

So, moving on...threads that don't violate TOS shouldn't be deleted just because they make the overly sensitive (perhaps this applies to the moderators and their spokespersons) feel uneasy.

That's the justification for why the "race" thread was shut down, yesterday. Moving on.

As a general comment threads or posts that refer to deleted threads (indirectly or directly) often get deleted on Internet forums/mailing lists; this is because those threads otherwise then quickly degenerate to become similar to the other (deleted) thread and a problem in themselves.

On a different tangent to the above paragraph addressing your question, as you know interpretation of the TOS is a subjective thing of course and it is the moderators and administrators who have the discretion to interpret and act as they wish. In essence the policies are written in pretty broad terms so there's some leeway. But I think most people know what's respectful to others and what is not. As it is a site for adults there are quite few rules and threads are rarely deleted.

I seldom venture on to this part of the board, however I believe my comment is/was pertinent to the entire board. It was not aimed at, nor did it name, any individual member.

I didn't see the thread to which you allude.

My point simply is that it is not fair to any member when someone picks a fight or attacks another member simply for the heck of it.

Moderators are volunteers who sometimes make unpleasant and unpopular decisions. Sometimes we have to apply our own descretion.

If you disagree with one of our decisions, the only way to get any satisfaction is to take your complaint by PM or e-mail to the administrator of the board.
