Back-N-Da Day!

I've been volunteering at a community center with children between the ages of 8 and 11. Well, spending time with these kids has taken me back to my childhood. I was amazed that double dutch, tag, marbles, etc. are still being played! Tell me GC members what were your favorite games to play before playstation and dreamcast!?!

Jem, the barbie with pink hair was my favorite. I had Jem pajamas and everything. I know I'm not the only one that would get cereal just for the prize. How about Cricket, the talking doll, she was like My Buddy and Kid Sister. And Kenya, she was a doll with magic lotion.

IotaNet 07-14-2001 12:32 AM

LOL!

I am seriously feeling this topic! I remember playing "hide and go seek" in 2 different age ranges. When we were very young (5-10), it was one game. When we got a bit older, (early-mid teens), it became something ALLLLLLL together different ... and ya'll know what I mean. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

On another note, my sisters used to play a game called "Chinese Jump-rope" ("jump in, jump out, jump side-to-side, jump on, jump out, jump in") with long strands of rubberbands. Any ladies feeling this or was it primarily a Chicago thing?

ALSO - for the fellas - did anybody used to make "hot-rods" ... with wood, and buggy wheels? (I'm probably SERIOUSLY dating myself with THAT one!)

Another one for the fellas ... "Strike-em-out" (Two people ... a ball, a bat, and a "strike-zone" box drawn on the wall.)

For everybody: Dodge Ball/Bombardment

Whew,I feel like an old man! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/redface.gif

In my day/where I came from we called it "Smear the Queer"--football with the emphasis on violent tackling.

60 seconds in Heaven

What the ________ could you possibly do in 60 seconds? At least the folk I know bumped it up to 7 Minutes. Played that at many a birthday party.
OMG, I'm surprised no one mentioned Four Square. Person in A-Square called the rules of play which included:

Decent game
Decent servebacks
Pitty-pats
Around the World
Tea Parties between Square A and Square (B,C, or D)

Oh, but sometimes the game got rough and dirty with such rules as....

Babies
Cornercuts
Shoeshines
and the ever-dreaded SKYSCRAPERS!

The folk in my neighborhood revolutionized Four Square and made it a sho-'nuff SPORT. Ah, those were the days.

aephi alum 01-12-2004 11:55 AM

This thread is bringing back memories :)

When I was little, we played...

Hopscotch
Command games (Simon Says, Mother May I, Red Light Green Light)
Suicide (we were not allowed to play ball games at school, but we did anyway :p )
Rattlesnake
Tag and freeze-tag
Follow the Leader (the leader was invariably the head of the big clique in my class  )
Word games like One Potato, Two Potato (sometimes used to figure out who would be "it" for tag, sometimes played for its own sake)

Now I feel old... :p

nikki1920 01-12-2004 12:03 PM

ok, I am such a jem fan that i : 1) got the tape of the movie from half.com and 2) found a website that has all the songs from the show on it, and downloaded them onto my computer.. lol

CountryGurl 06-16-2006 10:53 PM
