University Sweatshirts Question

I head something new recently:

Do American universities **really** send out a free university sweatshirt to everyone who gets a place and accepts at that university?

Apparently, American (USA) universities/colleges send out sweatshirts to the person when someone gets admitted to that school (e.g. "NYU" or "Santa Barbara" sweatshirts etc). Is this true?

Can people, clarify?

Thanks! :D

I don't know how it's like at most campuses, but I highly doubt that's the case. Perhaps it's like that for smaller colleges with a small entering Freshman class, but I don't think it's the norm.

I went to a State school with an entering class of about 7,000 and all I got was a letter saying, "Dear Sandy, we are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted into the Fall 1997 Freshman Class, now give us your freaking $100 intent to enroll fee."

decadence 04-06-2004 11:57 PM

Yep, that's similar to what I got. Intent to enrol fee though - I just got that sort of letter with the pay your tuition fees of x now right now scourge of humanity thing - same?

The sweatshirt thing I heard about in an LJ community, wasn't easy to see whether it was genuine/sarcasm/representative of majority of US colleges. (http://www.livejournal.com/community/ukuni/)

The Hawaiian university you went to is pretty much the same sweatshirts-wise as mine then OohTeenyWahine. :)

Anyone else heard of this? Or gets a sweatshirt?

I hate to be nitpicky and I'm not mad, but just for your (and others') FYI, please refrain from calling the University of Hawaii the "Hawaiian university". It's a complicated story, but the Native Hawaiian community and the University system don't have a good relationship (mainly because the university sits on stolen lands), and it would be improper to refer to UHM as the "Hawaiian university". :)

I remember also being accepted to Hawai`i Pacific University (private and independent school) and in my acceptance envelope I received one of those "t-shirt bricks". It was a t-shirt that said HPU in the shape of a brick. The t-shirt was of low quality and I ended up using it as a rag.

Xylochick216 04-07-2004 12:12 AM

Elon sends everyone a shirt when they pay their deposit. It's usually a size XL, though, so I could never wear mine

decadence 04-07-2004 12:23 AM

OohTeenyWahine ok sorry I didn't know that. I just used that phrasing maybe lazily as I knew vaguely you lived in Hawaii and had went to a university also there without bothering to check specifics of where exactly from past posts/profile etc.

tunatartare 04-07-2004 01:27 AM

I've never heard of any schools doing this. It would cost too much money to give a free sweatshirt out to everyone you accepted, even the people who didn't end up coming to your school.

GeekyPenguin 04-07-2004 01:31 AM

I don't think this is standard practice...I got a free shirt when I toured Marquette as a incoming frosh but it was with an engineering program. Bradley gave me a free shirt when I toured too, but that was an Honors Program tour. Platteville gave us a free shirt at orientation that was awful and I think I wore mine twice, then gave it to my dad.

queequek 04-07-2004 01:41 AM

Nope, not for Iowa State. However, I did receive a brochure from our University Book Store, promoting our sweatshirts that were available for $40 or something.

navane 04-07-2004 01:42 AM

My undergraduate university has 33,000 students - that's just way too many sweatshirts. So, no, they did not give out sweatshirts to everyone who received an offer.

Richard, it's kind of off the topic a bit, but my professor at Bristol made fun of me in front of the entire class for buying a university sweatshirt the first month of classes. I had to explain to her that it is a tradition among American students to run off and get one at their first opportunity. <sigh> Luckily some of the Brits backed me up on that.

Edited because I used a British term that most people on GC would find weird. Sorry!

Peaches-n-Cream 04-07-2004 02:38 AM

When I was accepted to a private college in Pennsylvania, they sent me a poster. They didn't give me a scholarship, but they gave me a poster. I never heard of free sweatshirts.

TigerLilly 04-07-2004 05:49 AM

I got a poster from UK, but then again I think it was from the Honors Program, not from UK itself. Heidelberg sent me a calendar/poster, too. UK has too many undergrads to afford to send them all a sweatshirt. Besides, why send them one when you can pretty much guarantee they'll buy one from the bookstore for $50?
navane -- That's why I'm not buying my U. of Heidelberg Tshirt until right before I leave, I dont want to get made fun of! No one wears them here, but I'll wear it back home. I've seen other exchange students wearing them, though, and the German students always laugh at them.

SATX*APhi 04-07-2004 06:04 AM

I applied to nothing but private universities here in Texas, about 8 of 'em, so I can't speak of public universities in TX. Of the schools I applied to, only 1 sent me a shirt: the University of Dallas. I think one sent me a cap, but I don't remember which school it was.

mu_agd 04-07-2004 06:29 AM

my sister and i went to the same school. when she got accepted they sent her a car decal. when i got accepted, i got nothing. i guess they realized the costs were adding up.

moe.ron 04-07-2004 06:31 AM

I got an orientation t-shirt. But it was not free. It was part of the cost of the orientation fee. I also got a welcome note from the bookstore and it gave me the $45 Russel Athletic sweatshirt and the $15 Games Hat.

Well, see, the British students *do* wear university sweatshirts and t-shirts around town. I guess it's just that my professor was trying to imply that I was being a "typical gung-ho American" for buying mine so quickly.

Whatever. I set her straight! :p

OrigamiTulip 04-07-2004 10:17 AM

UF sent me a little Albert patch/sticker in my admissions letter, but no tshirt. In fact, I didn't get or buy any UF gear until winter of my sophmore year when I bought a sweatshirt to wear to a conference.

BYU, while recruiting me, sent me a tshirt, a baseball cap, and a planner. I think they were trying to bribe me into finishing my application, which no amount of free stuff or money would have gotten me to do.

I thought a "jumper" in British English referred to a sweater, not a sweatshirt.

dzsaigirl 04-07-2004 06:02 PM

No, they didn't give me a free sweatshirt. That is why they can charge 50 bucks for them at the bookstore!

I got a few free t-shirts BEFORE I was accepted. (like at those stupid recruiting weekends where they invite you there and you stay in the dorm with people, etc.) I am sure it is just a perk to lure you there.

Nope. It can, and does refer to both.

cutiepatootie 04-07-2004 10:09 PM

Thats funny! i better be calling univ of arkasnsas and inq into why i didnt a sweatshirt or t shirt when i was accepted.

let me revise this yes i did get something.......a bill saying pay your tutition because were cheap!

Munchkin03 04-07-2004 10:15 PM

I didn't get a t-shirt when I was accepted to undergrad, but I did get a little sticker with the letter. My daddy put it on his car.

When I got in to grad school, I had to put down a $500 deposit. Still, no T-shirt. Just a lot of abuse and boredom.

Ahhhhhh :)

Sister Havana 04-08-2004 01:13 AM

Indiana didn't send me a free T-shirt or sweatshirt or anything like that. They did send me a car decal though. :D

hottytoddy 04-08-2004 03:07 AM

We got a free t-shirt at orientation.

AOPIHottie 04-08-2004 04:03 PM

We got an UGLY t-shirt at orientation, but it was in the cost of the orientation. I think I wore mine to clean house in, cause it was an XL and really ugly. Hmm, I probably still have it in a box at my moms with the zillions of t-shirts we got my senior year of high school.

Rio_Kohitsuji 04-08-2004 06:18 PM

I got a lanyard....whooo hoooo

Now, if you're accepted into the School of Education you get a nifty t-shirt...of course it's XL and ugly...and once you add it all up it costs over $10,000 for a damn shirt...

astroAPhi 04-08-2004 08:45 PM

I got a car decal when I accepted, and then at orientation I got a lanyard and the ugliest large tee shirt ever.

I used it to dye my hair with.

Wine&SilverBlue 04-09-2004 12:11 AM

Wash U

When I got admitted they sent me a "flippy flyer" (some sort of fabric frisbee that i used as a coaster for a month and then lost somewhere), a size XXL t-shirt (which i stuffed with 5 bags of cotton stuffing, sewed the sleeves/bottom/neckline and made into a giant Wash U pillow --- although it was too big to take with me to school -- should have made it there -- so it sits on my bed at home), 2 car decals, and some other stuff I think. :D

ZTAMich 04-09-2004 12:26 AM

I got a poster from a school in PA before I even applied
My name on a sign at Admissions when I came in for a tour, pre-acceptance mind you
And my two little sisters & I got t-shirts from a small college in upstate NY after we went on a tour on a rainy day!
The second time I went for a tour @ Moravian after I was accepted a gal who worked on the activities board was the tour guide and she gave us a frisbee! :)

AchtungBaby80 04-09-2004 12:51 PM

What? You mean you all get stuff other than a letter saying howdy, congratulations, you're accepted? I must've gone to the wrong school! :p

PM_Mama00 04-09-2004 12:57 PM

Man I went to the wrong school too. University of Michigan Dearborn must be cheap asses! I got nothing cool like that!
