You know your a child of the 80's when...

I realize that not all of us were actually children of the 80's but I think it would be fun for people to rattle of things about the 80's that really stick out like a sore thumb. Something you automatically think of when someone says "the 80's".

So here is what I think of:

New Kids on the Block

texas*princess 04-06-2004 01:04 AM

you know who Rainbow Brite is :)

(and all the names of her friends and the sprites :p)

ASUADPi 04-06-2004 01:07 AM

I loved Rainbow Brite

Here's another:

Strawberry Shortcake

texas*princess 04-06-2004 01:12 AM

the SNORKLES!!!

Adelphean1851 04-06-2004 01:12 AM

the Care Bears for me it was always the Care Bears

texas*princess 04-06-2004 01:17 AM

does anyone remember She-Ra and the Princesses of Power?

I had the entire action figure set including the ice castle.. or whatever it was called  I think there was also like a huge swan that they could use as transportation, and a shell-shaped pool that worked like a fountain... hehehe fun stuff! I think my parents still have all that in the attic somewhere?

JaimeNicole 04-06-2004 01:29 AM

on my block, there was nothing cooler than a high pony tail to the side, some bike shorts, and scrunchie socks! how cool were we!?

adpi*violet 04-06-2004 02:11 AM

My Little Ponies
the Smurfs on Saturday morning cartoons
Star Wars action figures (before they made their comeback)
Wonder Woman Under-roos

lyrica9 04-06-2004 04:16 AM

ah, arnette, you're a little off. its the SNORKS. ;)

AshleyPi 04-06-2004 08:38 AM

hehehe thanks for the correction!

I don't know where I got the Snorkles from :p

TN-TX ADPi 04-06-2004 10:04 AM

wearing two pair of scrunch socks, alternating the colors of course!
teased hair- the bigger and rattier, the better
jellies-shoes, bracelets
My Little Pony, She-Ra, Smurfs(which I love!), JEM(remember her?),
Layering bike shorts with a mini-skirt (I NEVER did that;) )
I could go on forever!

Tggrsluv2bnce 04-06-2004 10:41 AM

I loved Jem! I have the Jem theme song stuck in my head now!!

ADPiZXalum 04-06-2004 11:01 AM

If you've ever been to a New Kids on the Block Concert (IT WAS SOOOOOOO FUN!!) and you were dissappointed when they officially changed their name to NKOTB. :(

honeychile 04-06-2004 11:19 AM

Nobody's mentioned Madonna yet?!?!?!?

ASUADPi 04-06-2004 11:37 AM

multiple ear piercings.

(I remember when I was in 5th-6th grade it was the 'cool' thing to have two/three holes in your ears. And then you would wear the different size hoop earrings).

Cabbage Patch Kids

He-Man (He rocked. I have two younger brothers, if I wanted to play with them we played 'boy' games)

Transformers

The movie Masters of the Universe

adpi1030787 04-06-2004 11:49 AM

Ok, well since everyone has mentioned my favorites (Strawberry Shortcake, Care Bears, which both have come back, hehe)

Does anyone remember Fraggle Rock?

Tggrsluv2bnce 04-06-2004 02:54 PM

I remember Fraggle Rock! That's the ringtone on my cell phone. Every time my phone rings, it puts me in a good mood!

The ringer on my phone for my diamond sis is the fraggle rock theme... Also for people who liked the Fraggles you should go to Hot Topic... there are stuffed animals, patches, etc with them on it...

As for me... I remember hyper-color clothes, on top of what everyone else has listed...

ASUADPi 04-06-2004 05:01 PM

I don't know if this was just me, but I remember the shorts that had ruffles at the bottom of them. Man, they were the style when I was in elementary school.

Oh no, I remember these two. Besides what everyone else has already mentioned (which is the majority of what I remember and was thinking the minute I started reading this thread). Now I need to go find all my My Little Ponies, Strawberry Shortcake, Rainbow Brite, Care Bears, etc stuff and put it around my room and then get out the NKOTB video or tape and start jamming in my room ;)

And t*p, you better BELIEVE I remember She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. I still to this day have my She-Ra VHS tape at my grandparents :D

Oh, and that reminds me of another thing: Pound Puppies!

skerbow 04-06-2004 07:24 PM

Okay...what about Garbage Pail Kids? And Back to the Future? And Tank tops worn under oversized sweatshirts with leggins and leg warmers? How about Blue eye shadow? Aqua Net??

OKAY and as for the She-Ra thing...Imgaine me, Sherra, growing up during her reign? Yes I was She-Ra!

skerbow 04-06-2004 07:25 PM

OH! what about Knit sets? and Bangles? and Jellies?? OH and what about those stupid plastic charm necklaces?? Remember what I'm talking about??

Adelphean 04-07-2004 12:54 AM

I was born in late '83, but I remember being IN LOVE w/ Joe from New Kids, dressing like Madonna EVERY Halloween, Cabbage Patch Kids, and the most HENIOUS color combinations you could find. Man, I'm glad the 80's are coming back!!

TN-TX ADPi 04-07-2004 11:13 AM

Garbage Pail Kids! How could I forget!!! I think I had every card they made!
It would be fun for the 80's to come back BIG- but just for like a month or two!

ASUADPi 04-07-2004 11:53 AM

What about MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice. LOL.

TN-TX ADPi 04-07-2004 03:21 PM

Remember the "MC Hammer" pants? They were like wings on each side, then you buttoned the sides in the middle? SOOOOO ugly, yet I had 2 or 3 pairs!

skerbow 04-07-2004 04:16 PM

Intense1920 04-07-2004 04:27 PM

OMG I remember the Thundercats and Silverhawks.

Every so often I'll see one of these cartoons on the cartoon network. Let me tell you, living down memory lane.

What about The Labrynth (didn't that come out in the 80's with the then unknown Jennifer Connelly)

I think this was said, but I'm not sure, but when I was a kid I would wear two pairs of socks. The push down kind and I would wear two different colors. It was like you had to go up a shoe size just to fit the socks. :)

I also remember the MC Hammer pants. I too had a pair.

Side ponytails

Big hair and bangs (with lots and lots of aqua net sprayed on it)

polarpi 04-07-2004 11:09 PM

I was thinking about this yesterday when I was driving (and I know not everyone likes country), but there's this song by Mark Wills called "19 Something", and the first verse is about the 70's, but the second verse is about 80's, and almost everything mentioned in the song has been mentioned by one of us :D

Here's the lyrics (as much that I can remember of them) of the second verse and chorus:

It was the dawning of a new decade
We got our first microwave
Dad broke down and finally shaved those sideburns off

I took the stickers off my Rubic (sp?) cube
Watched MTV all afternoon
My first love was Daisy Duke and them cut off jeans

Space shuttle fell out of the sky
And the whole world cried

It was 1980-something
In the world that I grew up in
Skating rinks and Black Trans Ams
Big hair and parachute pants
Looking back all I can see's me
Oh man did I look cheesy
I wouldn't trade those days for nothing
Oh, it was 1980-something

ASUADPi 04-08-2004 01:34 AM

MTV= Video Killed the Radio Star

That was the first MTV video, which I believe was in the early 80's.

honeychile 04-08-2004 11:13 AM

Michael Nesmith.

Adelphean 04-08-2004 03:32 PM

Adam Ant, The Culture Club, and Devo!

FirstAndFinest 04-08-2004 05:56 PM

This thread is KILLING me!! OMG it is such a TRIP! :D

Yeah, I'm one of those who stopped watching MTV when Real World came on. I mean, isn't the "M" for MUSIC?? ;)
