What is "Chapter?"
I have a pledge who went to GTech and was in with the Theta Xi's. She said there would be certain days where every greek would have to go to "chapter" Does anyone know what that is???
|
When we say "going to chapter" it means attending our chapter meetings. On the two campuses I've been on, those were Monday nights.
|
Chapter met first on Tuesdays and then during my last semester we moved everything (including Chapter council) to Monday.
EC is still held on Sundays (but probably not for long!). |
So basically all the greeks had chapter meeting at the same time on the same day? Okay, she, the pledge was wondering what it was too. Thanks!
|
We had "chapter" (chapter meeting) the same night each week, but it did not coincide with any other sorority/fraternity meeting on purpose. I don't think all the chapters have their meetings on the same day, but I could be wrong.

To expand, Chapter Meetings are weekly business meetings. It's a time where the the chapter officers can give announcements, rewards or programs to all the chapter members and where the chapter members can find out all the information regarding going-ons that they need for the current and upcoming weeks.
Most often, it's conducted in proper business format, with the President presiding and members (sometimes) using Parliamentary Procedure and/or Robert's Rules of Order. It's also one of the main times that all or nearly all chapter members are gathered together in one place at one time so it's a great opportunity for other people from other orgs to come and talk to the chapter. The day and time for Chapter meetings are decided on by each individual org. Many do have them on Sundays or Mondays, but it can change to best fit the schedules of all members. So: ABC and RST could have chapter on Mondays at 6, DEF could have chapter on Sundays at 5, JLK could have chapter on Wednesdays at 8 and XYZ could have chapter on Wednesdays at 6. |

I think the reason a lot of groups have their meetings on the same day is because that's a time the majority of people on campus are free. When I was an active, just about everybody met on Sunday nights.
|
We have chapter on Sunday nights.
|
Often at large schools, everyone's chapter meetings (that is what chapter is) occur on the same day so serenades and such can take place. Also so you can schedule classes accordingly, if you are rushing and have not yet joined.

All the sororities (except for Phi Mu) have chapter on Wednesday night at Auburn

By the way, having dinner before and a social right after chapter meant we had a high turnout for chapter. FYI: The campus wide chapter night changed when the SEC moved conference basketball games to Wednesday nights. |

My understanding is that in addition to SEC games on Wednesday nights, the "mid-week" mixers went away due to risk management issues. Thus there is no longer a need to have the chapter meetings all on the same night. By the way, are Thursdays still the big weeknight for going out? Like to Two Keys. :D |

I don't know about SEC games, but I know there were always times when everyone was in a big hurry for chapter to get over, so they could go get in line for the ticket lottery for the bball games. The lotteries always seem to be on Monday nights. You can never make everyone happy when it comes to when chapter is, it seems! |

It sounds like the ticket lottery is pretty much the same. Except the first day for ticket distribution use to be Sunday around noon. Many a Sundays it was rather, how to put it, "difficult" to get up and make it over to Memorial Coliseum. :p |
My father hates the ticket lottery... he thinks that it should be first come first serve.... now even if you are number one in line and there are 200 people and only 50 tickets available... there is no sure bet that the first person will get a ticket.
As to Thursday nights... College night at most bars is still Thursday Nights. I know that at Georgetown (which is only 15 minutes from Lexington) we all had a hard time getting to those Friday classes. When AGD joined Georgetown's Campus in 1999, meetings were all over the place but mostly were held on Wednesday nights. The administration wanted all of the chapters both male and female to go to the same night a week, that way night classes and other campus wide events could try to be avoided for that night. At first we were going to go to Sunday but that caused church issues again and also I think that Lamb's have a clause about not meeting on Sundays... Tuesday nights were out because that is a big night for classes, Thursday's were out because of the item mentioned above and no one is going to meet on Friday or Saturday night... leaving Monday night as the only available night. |
Thursday night used to be a big bar night on campus...everyone went to The Keg...that is until the bar became no smoking. People stopped going. They actually had to turn saturday nights into an all ages night because they were losing money.
Anyway, our chapter was always scheduled around our members class schedules. So potentially it could change every semester. |

The various bars in Campustown have made sure that there are specials going on every night of the week.
Moday: Tea night ($2.00 Long Island Ice Teas in assorted flavors) Tuesday: Two-fers Wednesday: $1 burgers at one place from 4-7, mug night everywhere else Thursdays: Thirsty Thursdays--every bar had different specials Friday: $.25 draws, $1 bottles, penny pitchers, etc. . . It's a wonder I ever made it to class some days! :) Our chapter was on Monday nights, fwiw. |

and i'm pretty sure all sororities on campus had their chapter meetings on Wednesday nights.. which we usually followed with $.25 wings at church st station and a few games of naked photo hunt! |
Yeah, I miss Taco Tuesdays at Compadres.
You can't go wrong with $2 Coronas and Margaritas and $1 tacos. |
Stingles
There use to be a bar in Lexington in the Chevy Chase area called Stingles. Not sure what is there now, but it was across from Charlie Brown's.
Stingles had a Happy Hour each Friday afternoon with three-fers for the price of $0.80. Yep - eighty cents for three hard liquor drinks. :D Since this was back in the - ahem - disco era, Stingles' dance floor would become quite popular as happy hour progressed. Needless to say, after a few Singapore Slings you were ready to Get Down and Boogie. |
