MLB 2004 Thread

It's opening day for many teams today.

One of the best days of the year, and I know Spring is official when I see people standing out on street corners selling special edition Kansas City Star Papers as part of Greater Kansas City Day.

I can only imagine what it would be like to be in KC right now, as I know the whole city is abuzz for baseball this year

Anyways use this thread to discuss this season all summer long!

The sad truth is that the Yanks have a shot...Mets, probably not :( I'm going to see the Yanks/Red Sox on April 23rd.

FINALLY, the Stros have a killer starting rotation and i think Dotel's ready to step up and be a big time closer.

If Berkman can have the season he did 2 years ago and Bags and Kent perform as we're accustomed to, it's gonna be a hell of a year in Htown this year.

Me = super excited

Royals win in the ninth, scoring 6 including a 3 run HR by pinch hitter Mendy Lopez to the game and a 2 run shot by Carlos Beltran to end the game. I happened to be listening to my radio in the library during that inning and it was awesome considering they were down by 4 going into the 9th.

The game was played in front of the 3rd largest regular season crowd in Kansas City History! And everyone gets donuts from Krispy Kreme (a free dozen glazed) since the Royals got more than 12 hits!!!

sigtau305 04-05-2004 08:58 PM

It's gonna be another long Season for the Indians.:( But, I'm glad they got rid of Milton Bradley. haven't done anythig except piss off the team with his antics.

The Year of the Cubs - AC005996

I'm excited for this year....though last year's season ended in a dissapointing, jinxed loss in the final game of the NL championship, The Bartman Ball has been blown up and should not be a problem this year. And forget the fact that the Cubs haven't had back-to-back winning seasons in 3 decades...

The Cubs have the BEST Pitching rotation the League has ever seen, with Kerry Wood, Greg Maddux, Matt Clement, Carlos Zambrano, and in a month or two, Mark Prior.

The Cubs have a gold glove first baseman, Derrek Lee, the new addition of 4-time cy-young award Greg Maddux, startup man LaTroy Hawkins, the only National Leaguer to have six consecutive 40 homerun seasons (Sosa) and a great set of rookies.

Most importantly, the great city of Chicago believes in their Cubs like no time else...spring training games down south were sold out, and over a half-million home-game tickets were sold the first day they were available.

AlphaSigOU 04-05-2004 09:57 PM

I really admire the pluck of the Cubbies and their perenially frustrated fans... maybe this year the AC (Anno Catuli) clock resets to zero with a World Series win?

EAMUS CATULI! (Except when my Yanks are playing...) ;) :) :D:p

Sister Havana 04-05-2004 11:33 PM

Cubs won, and the White Sox, Cardinals and Astros all lost...it was a glorious opening day for me! :D

polarpi 04-06-2004 12:29 AM

Okay, I'll join in on the fun....

GO PADRES!!!! :D :D :D :D

My boys socked it to the Dodgers today, and I'm hoping to see them do it again tomorrow ;)

I also was praying that Houston would pull it out against the Giants today....can't wait until Opening Day here in SD though, when we get to see the Giants in the new park here

There's something just not right about a damnyankee (one word, purposely) rooting for the Cubbiebears...

Oh, come on dude, they always do that. If they were smart, the giveaway would be if the Royals gave up less than 12 hits. Then maybe we would get some good pitching.

Nevertheless, I was glad to see the boys come back and win.

sigtau305 04-07-2004 01:48 PM

the Bullpen from hell has ariesn this season and it's only two games. the Indians need to do something about it.

Yeah, the bully torched excellent work by the very large C.C. Sabathia.

Meanwhile, I'm watching how the Dominican Diva, Pedrito Martinez, will be this year. Allegedly, there's already talk about Petey going to los Yanquis in 2005.

that's new to me. that might change if Pedro and Curt can push the red sox deep into the season overtaking the yankees.

Anyone notice that the TIGERS are 3-0??? YeeHa!!

I think it was the middle of May before they had 3 wins last year-- that's why I love spring. Hope is eternal! We won't be cellar-dwellers forever! (okay, I like underdogs and besides I've rooted for them since 68- they didn't always suck)

I watch some of the highlights on ESPN's Baseball tonight. They look so far. I don't want the Indians switching places with the Tigers.

GO BREWERS!

tinydancer 04-09-2004 05:39 PM

Well, since the Rangers are probably gonna suck (again) this year:

GO PHILLIES!!!

GO ASTROS!!!

dakareng 04-09-2004 11:17 PM

Hey Tiny Dancer-- if the Rangers have you down come on over to Frisco and catch the Rough Riders. They actually had a winning record last year, new stadium and the games are a lot of fun! Minor league baseball is really more fun anyway!!

polarpi 04-10-2004 01:57 AM

Woo hoo to the PADRES for winning their first ever opening day game at Petco Park (not a very common occurence) versus the Giants :D

Of course, it took them to the 10th inning to do so after we blew it in the top of the 9th and the top of the 10th :p

But that's okay! :)

It's ok tiny, we lost our first 2 at Minute Maid nee Enron, but i think the Stros are finding their rythm now.

Wade Miller continues his dominance over the Brewers in their home park. He's something like 11-1 there in his career.

But hey, the Rangers haven't been looking too bad thus far. I'm a Stros guy first, and a Rangers kid second.

Well, shut my mouth!! The Rangers WON their home opener!!

annice22 05-26-2004 10:33 PM

Which teams do you think will make it to the post season?

My picks: Yankee's, Boston, Oakland, and Angels

I would like the A's to win but I think the either Boston or Angels will make to the end.

I'm not a NL fan so I'm not going to even make a pick.

Thrillhouse 05-26-2004 11:55 PM

Boston, yankees, whitesox, and angels

I know the trendy pick is Boston or NY but I'm going with Anaheim to win the AL. They are a scary team with everyone healthy.

I think the cubs will take the NL but its anyones guess in that league.

wreckingcrew 09-08-2004 09:58 PM

My my my,

what a turn the season has taken to this point in September.

While i will probably jinx them with this post, a certain team that will remain nameless has charged out of nowhere into contention for the Wild Card. Said team, who resides in the NL Central have feasted of late on the have-nots but still must play the mighty Cardinals 6 times and the Giants 3 times.

On our current tear, we did take 3 of 4 to start our streak from the team that most on here have championed as the team to beat.

It's gonna be a great September!!

Kitso
KS 361 times i thank god for Carlos Beltran every day

I hope you have jinxed the "nameless" team ;) Just kidding :)

It's really exciting to see that the NL Wild Card is still a five team race (at least), with those five teams only separated by 2 games. It's hard to say who'll wind up on top, but I know who I'm hoping for! :D

KSigkid 09-10-2004 08:45 AM

I'm interested to see how close Ichiro comes to Sisler's hits record. He's already up to 229, plus his average is hovering around .380. With the way he was hitting around the All-Star break, who would have thought?

Yankees swept the doubleheader yesterday, back up to 3.5 games. It's not comfortable, but it's something. Mussina finally had a good pitching performance...hopefully it starts a trend.

tinydancer 09-10-2004 09:09 AM

Well, the Phillies are slumping, the Rangers are slumping, so I guess it's a good thing football seasons is here.;)

Looks like the jinx didn't take.

Astros win the Wild Card after one of the most monumental comebacks in baseball history. Win 12 in a row, 15 of 16, end the season with 2 straight sweeps, of the Cards and the Rocks.

:D

And all of it at the expense of a team who i LOVE to see find ways to choke their season away. Year of the Cubs my ass.

Bring on the Braves!!!

GOD, we need to keep Beltran and convince Roger to come back next year.

Pettite, Clemens, Oswalt, Miller, Backe. I'll take that rotation with Lidge as the closer.

The1calledTKE 10-03-2004 05:23 PM

I am going to Game 1 of the NLDS (Braves vs Houston ) and game 5 if they have it. If the Braves make it further I am going to game 2 or 4 of the NLCS depending on who has homefield advantage. More than likely game 4 unless by some freak chance St Louis gets knocked out.

I rather go see the Sox play but they are too far away. Doubt I would get lucky enough to see the Braves vs the Sox in the series.

Go Sox beat the Angels. Go Twins give the Yankees hell.

phikappapsiman 10-03-2004 10:30 PM

Congratulations to the Southern California teams (Dodgers and Angels) for making the playoffs. I wish them the best of luck, and I am sure that they will represent California well.

And if you think that I REALLY mean this...I have some nice beachfront property to sell to you in Florida...:D

Yeah...I'm hating right about now... just getting ready to hear from the So Cal folks...
