Reasons why I hate MTSU
Parking sucks...
And, the Education Dept. has a serious communication problem. A class that has been a 2-part combo for years (two classes of 3 hours each for a total of 6 hours) is suddenly listed as a two-part class of two 4 hour classes for a total of 8 hours. I tried talking to the scheduling dept. who told me to talk to the Education Dept. The Eled secretary admitted she wasn't sure about it, but she would not find out anything definite for me. She told me to talk to my advisor about it... I have e-mailed my advisor. But, that doesn't mean I will end up getting a class that only has 25 spots total since I won't hear from him until at least Monday or Tuesday... (The extra two hours brought me up to 17 instead of 15, meaning I not do not have room for another class...) The eled sec. now insists that the class has changed to an 8 hour class. But, the time amount in class is 2 hours per day for 3 days per week. This equals SIX hours... ARGGGHHHHH............... Anyone else hate their school... Boy, I miss Ole Miss... |
I use to get really annoyed by UCF.
The parking was horrendous. If you weren't driving around the parking lot hunting for a spot at least 30 minutes before your class began, you could forget about going. During my senior year, they were doing construction on one of the main roads on campus (trying to convert it from a 2 lane road to a 4 lane road). The construction caused such back ups that it turned the UCF main road into a big parking lot. Around 6pm, trying to get off campus would take 40 minutes. Our "advisors" had a combined IQ of 23. You're better off just going by your catalogue instead of getting advice from them. The advisors usually knew less about the courses, prerequisites, and requirements than the students. I know several people who graduated a semester to a year late because their advisor screwed up. Here's another problem: many of the classes in the sciences department are only offered once a year so you need to plan accordingly. It is one of the main reasons we say that UCF stands for "U Can't Finish". This is what happens: let's say that Physical Chemistry I is only offered in the spring while P-Chem II is only offered in the Fall. For someone who did not know this and plan their schedule around this, they could wind up graduating a year late. If you have to withdraw from the class, you'll have to wait a year to retake it. Also, if the class doesn't have enough students signing up, UCF will cancel the class. I love my alma mater!!!! |
I hate MTSU because ALL of my friends I went to high school with go there and they refuse to meet new people. They didn't go greek--which is ok--but they still hang out with ALL THE SAME PEOPLE!
|
I hate Marquette because the departments never talk to each other. There's at least 50 kids majoring in both Econ and PoliSci, so logically they offer Economics and the Law at the same time as Con Law so instead of taking Econ and Law, a class that would be useful to me, I'm taking International Currency Markets so I can graduate on time.

The reason why I hate MTSU is that is feels like High school all over again. I am really happy about the new 120 hour program though. Thank god I went greek and met a totally different group of friends/sisters. The same people I pass in the halls and around campus is the same people I passed in the halls the previous 4 years! BUT im outta here in December! That makes me 3.5 year graduate, and im moving to Rhode Island! GET THIS YANKEE OUT OF TENNESSEE!!
Oh yeah, did someone mention PARKING?? Its funny that someone produced bumper stickers that said "If you see my professor, tell them im looking for a parking spot" For the love~ |
I like MTSU. Yes it sucks that every time I'm assigned an advisor they leave at the end of the semester, yes it sucks that I can't get into the program this semester, there are a lot of things that suck. What really sucks is that our budget keeps being cut by the state because they screwed up the budget. A cut budget means less classes available, less advisors, etc. Government sucks. But on a good note:
There are 22,000 people here. It's a big place. You can avoid people you don't want to run into and if you really want you can meet new people every day. You are forced to find your place because in a school this big no one will do it for you. I came from a little tiny Christian school where every move was watched by the other students, professors, etc. It was like being in a bubble. We have so many chances here to see almost every extreme imaginable. And for all the awful professors there's one great one that we've forgotten about. |
I'm fairly happy with ASU except for a few things:
--when I started in August 2000, it was the cheapest public college in Arkansas. Now it's the most expensive because they've raised tuition so many times and added so many fees. --they built a parking garage that NO ONE uses because it's at the edge of campus and you have to pay to use it. It's so far away from classes that no one will pay to park there when you can park at a free spot and walk the same distance! |

I am from Shelbyville...I go out in Murfreesboro a lot...I have fun when i go out there. I heard they mayb be trying to get around the "whorehouse" law & build some sorority houses. |
Yeah, Hotty, they are supposed to be building chapter suites across the road from Greek Row. (It's a horse pasture right now...) Last my sisters said, it was still about two years away before ground is even broken...

Positive feelings about MTSU
For a positive note....
I have been to several schools in my life...MTSU has the best community feel of any that I have ever attended. I honestly feel that if something happened to me, someone would notice. :) Silver |
I totally agree with you about MTSU. I have been to a couple of schools and I totally hated MTSU. I went there for a semester and that was enough for me. The parking is rediculous, the dorm I lived in was skanky, I couldn't even figure out who my advisor was, and I was in a class with like 100 other people and learned absolutely nothing. I am at Morehead State now and I love it! I hope you start to like MTSU.

I just found this thread and wanted to join in the fun! As an alumna of MTSU, I hate the following:
- While I was able to have more of a "college experience" than the small private school I was had previously attended, I was still disappointed that a school with such a large enrollement offered such a sad collegiate experience. - I think Peck Hall, Jones Hall, KUC, and KOM require no further words. - Support for Greek life is terrible. - I didn't feel a sense of community at all. - I won't go into the parking. - Idiots work in the Financial Aid office. - I never met my advisor because she would never show up at our scheduled appointments. Well, I could go on, but I'm tired. Yeah, I got a degree from there and met my wonderful sisters there, but MTSU needs some massive improvement!!! As for the sorority houses, I've been told that the land is purchased and architectual plans are the hold up. There is no whorehouse law. That ended a really long time ago. |
I didn't go to MTSU... BUT I sympathize with everyone's parking problems. At my university there is 1 parking structure, which costs 5 dollars a day... that's 100 dollars a month if you go to class 5 times a week and they don't sell semester long permits... and it's full half the time anyway. All around campus is 2 hour parking which they patrol like NAZIS and there's never a spot anyway.... and if you break any of these rules it is a 55-75 dollar parking ticket. Oh yeah you can also walk about a mile to the other parking lot.. but it's still 5 dollars and at night it's not really very safe.

(one could always take the M Oceanview, because we both know SFSU is a streetcar college ;) ) MTSU folks, at least your football team is getting better, right? And your parking may suck but it does everywhere, and you don't have to worry about snow plows burying your car, or dodging moose in the parking lot. Let alone plugging in your car because the block will freeze and you'll need a new headgasket because it is -40. Something at every University sucks, we all feel the pain together. |
i go to a little college in central new york- but we still have similar problems- the parking is terrible- but the campus and town is pretty small so you can walk pretty much anywhere- which is nice when you've been out all night and you can get hope without too much incident
i go to suny cortland- and i love it- its like 6000 undergrads- but it gets a bad rap as a jock school- but the psych and teaching programs are amazing and some of the best out of the suny system i wish i could go to grad school there- but i think i'll have to go to someplace a little more reputable...:( but we have alpha phi, sigma delta tau, delta phi epsilon, phi sigma sigma and my sorority (obvi the only local) |

I went out lastnight in Murfreesboro with some MTSU kids. We went to Bluesboro. I had never been there. I kinda liked that bar. There was a really good jazz band playing.

A dairy lagoon is the most disgusting smelling thing in the world, that combined with the sewage treatment plant can make some hazardous stank. |
<major rant>
My university has a few different parking classifications and zones. The one I rant about is the red tag commuter parking. They sold 9000 or so commuter tags w/ only 3000 available spots. Even better, those have now been reduced to around 2400 because of construction. State vehicles have their own special spots to park in. Of course they don't and they take up commuter spots w/o tickets. When we park in their spot, BAM $25 ticket. They gripe about budget concerns to no end. My tuition has gone up over 33% since I started. So tell me, friends, why in the HELL did they spend an extra $16 million dollars on the new Chemistry building in order to have lovely features such as a limestone dome instead of a concrete dome? This is $16 million on top of what it already cost. The athletic office complex got a huge renovation and addition. They're talking about expanding the already 85,000 capacity stadium. The health center on campus is truly Satan incarnate. They double bill, forget to file w/ insurance, and never actually treat what ails you. I put in my change of major and minor form nearly 3 months ago. They still haven't changed my major, but did change my minor. I'm graduating in December, provided they don't f*ck up anymore. </rant> |
