Words You Find Tasteless or Tacky

...

DeltaSigStan 04-02-2004 02:08 AM

Anyone who uses the word "Ghetto" to describe something dirty/unorganized/formal or anything lower than their standard of what "normal" is.

Ex-"Look, the fonts on all the articles of this newspaper are all different. They look so ghetto, all unorganized like that."

And yes, I've actually heard someone say that.

valkyrie 04-02-2004 02:13 AM

Panties.

YES!! Not only does this bother me because I actually grew up in a ghetto, but because it reinforces classist stereotypes.

Plus, it just shows you're too lazy to come up with a more apt description.

mullet81 04-02-2004 02:47 AM

moist - i hate that word

AHHHH I was just about to post the same thing. Ewwww!!!

Damp also totally grosses me out. :o

I don't like the p-word OR the c-word...they just sound so dirty.

I hate when people say something is "gay" too, so freakin' rude and obnoxious.

Sorostitute...some moron actually coined this dumb word and I get called this all the time by my GDI guy friends back home. UGH.

Rudey 04-02-2004 03:57 AM

I'm cool with most of these words. I use gay on a daily basis and often throw in the, oh my gosh, c and p words.

Watch this: "holy sh*t you gay idiot. how the f*ck did you mess up the LIBOR swaps you c*ck licking pu*sy!?!

-Rudey
--As long as it flows though

kstar 04-02-2004 04:12 AM

I happen to love the so called "C-word". It's my favorite insult, usually used with the word "retarded".

BTW, the word retarded is just another word, I mean, yes, it had a certain meaning, but meaning changes. My mother is a very dedicated special ed. teacher and I tutor some of her students in Mathematics, I would never dream of calling those kids and adults retarded. I and my mother save the word retarded for idiots that should know better, the pc tem for special ed. students is developmentally challenged.

But words I can't stand:

Children- when people are bragging about theirs
The word "Tacky"
the word bush preceeded by the word president, that just seems to undermine the authority that the word president commands

OMG..this reminds me of someone I went to school with in undergrad. For some reason, the two of us started this thing where if we were talking about anything, we'd stop and say "Stop it, you're making me moist!" which would just make us fall out laughing.

It's a funny word.. kinda tacky, but in a fun way. :)

PhiPsiRuss 04-02-2004 07:33 AM

I find that word to be the most tasteless and tacky.

justamom 04-02-2004 08:17 AM

DISENFRANCHISED!!! http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de//puke.gif

Disrespected

Cancer-I really hate this word.

The descriptive terms guys use when they have to
go to the bathroom...for any reason. Can't they just say EXCUSE ME??? Not-I have to take a _____________

"N" word

"F" word when it's repeated over and over and over...

...and all the terms for female body parts.

Moist-that's a good one. Conjures up images of mold and bacteria
or hygiene

So many words used freely today were a major taboo when I was growing up-and it stuck!

alikat2 04-02-2004 08:18 AM

t*t

completely tasteless!

Unregistered- 04-02-2004 08:24 AM

It's weird, I find C**T tacky and tasteless, but I have no problem with Tw*T. I say Tw*T on a regular basis.

Still, I cringe when anybody says G*D DAMN.

I don't get it!

Glitter650 04-03-2004 04:36 AM

The "gay" thing.... it's not cool, and living where I do I can tell you it DEFINITELY offends people..

I also agree with

C word

panties

Midget... (being rather short myself... NOT COOL)

F^&* to refer to sex...makes me wince... I don't require it be called making love either... but F&*! is just not cool with me...

I'm sure there are others but I can't think of them at the moment...

Rudey 04-03-2004 04:43 AM

Gay people are cool with it. It's cool. I have gay friends.

Retarded people are cool with it too. They just don't know what's going on.

What about Gay retards?

James 04-03-2004 03:11 PM

Stalker .. . it has to be one of the most oversued words in the Female Vocabulary.

ITs misleading because it conjures images of someone trying to kill you versus the truth .. . some guy that you probably led on calling you too much.

"public opinion" - John Q. seldom knows what the hell he's talkin about.

"i think" - I THINK it's redundant.

Well um I am friends with lots of gay people and none of them care that I say that. They think it's funny. They don't get offended.

Off topic..here's a funny story.

The other night, some of my gay friends were dropping me & my friends off at a bar when they were on their way to a gay bar. One of them said "Do you want us to take you to the back door?" And I replied..."That's the only way y'all like it right?"

I didn't think he was ever going to stop laughing

Heere we go again with the freaking holier-than-thou BS.

Some people are offended by it, Tom. Who the F are you to say get over it?

Seriously, do you even THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU SAY before you SPEAK?

My answer would be "no."

decadence 04-03-2004 08:02 PM

Hottytoddy, I think that's a BIT different???

Banter between friends and throwing around the word all the time in daily life just ain't the same. They know [probably] you don't hate them for who they are, they [probably] can take it in the spirit it is meant.

It's a whole world away from conversations (of people aged over 8) like "you got a pen?" "yeah you can have this one but it's a bit gay" etc...
Would the replacement of a more sensitive word be so acceptable? "you got a pen?" "yeah you can have this one but it's a bit negro". No of course not (!!!) - there'd be outcry if people went around saying that - and rightly so. But one minority group is not acceptable to use in this way more than the next.
Using adjectives (however spelt) which refer to a minority group to say something is bad or sub-par isn't okay. Respecting different sensibilities is about maturity. Comments like "there's this guy and he's gay and he's just fiiiine with it" don't change it. Often, people do have a problem with it, whether they say so or not. And they aren't at fault for having a problem with it when part of who they are is used an a synonym for nasty, substandard, annoying.

AXJules 04-03-2004 08:23 PM

Ok I swore I was not going to jump into this, but...
I say 'gay' all the time, 'cept I write it "ghey". Obivously I know what it sounds like, but too bad...I use the word gay as in, "They were dancing gaily around....or Everyone is happy and gay." That conjures up an image of really cheesy nerdy stuff.....which is my intention and why I write "ghey" instead of 'gay'. And actually, if you think about it, I think that might be what a lot of people mean by it.....seriously now, how can something act like a homosexual? If I say that someone's joke is gay, I don' tmean it's somehting a gay person would say, I mean it's cheesy or horrible.

I know what I mean, I don't need to explain myself, but I hope you all can see where I'm coming from.

Dawg I get where you're coming from. For example the guys driving the Jetta near me are gay...ghey..GAY...Gay. Right now I'm listening to Kasey Chambers...she sings a song asking whether she's pretty enough. That's probably gay.

decadence 04-03-2004 08:40 PM

Ummmm was that serious??

Okay, you know I have *not* followed your posts on this board which use the word "ghey" sic and commented on them. :D. But since this is a post talking about your use of it; it's fair game? We won't agree, I just want to take the opportunity to give my thoughts.

Okay, the word 'gay' has changed over the years; the original meaning is archaic and nobody today uses it in that sense and everyone (I thought) knows that. Your usage comes across to me anyway as using it simply to describe things in a derogatory fashion not some social comment.

A person can act in a camp way attributed to effeminate or homosexual individuals yes, but a 'thing' cannot. Precisely why it does not make sense to refer to a 'thing' in such a way! But aside from that someone (a section of society) is on the receiving end of the practice of using the term in that way also.

Good thread!!

Many of the words mentioned truly offend me. Go ahead and say them in front of me, but I'm mentally deducting IQ and/or Class points from the speaker as I hear them.

G*D* and any other misuse of the Lord's name are my worst nightmares!

There are correct words for male & female anatomy; educated people should learn to use them properly. Misuse indicates a wasted mind. Same goes for gay, retard, retarded, ghetto, and any I've forgotten.

There's really no one so perfect on this earth who can use/misuse any of the words mentioned on this thread without showing a definite lack of maturity!!

AXJules 04-03-2004 08:58 PM

here we go...

Yes I would agree that the majority of people that use the word use it to mean a homosexual- that's not what I was saying. I meant that originally, I think it was used to refer to that archaic definition as an insult, not to actual gay people. In today's world, though, most people are using it as gay slander. Fine. Once again, I can only tell you how I mean it- I'm not too concerned with whether you think I'm being derogatory or not b/c I know my intentions.

Precisely my point--- maybe the rest of the world isn't making sense when they say it, then....
http://www.flexi.net.au/~mkendall/we...he%20beach.jpg
GHEY. Cheesy-horrible-too much happiness for one beach. Dorky. Filled with oddball joy so commonly depicted in bad 50's movies.
http://vikingphoenix.com/public/gchof/rosie-1.jpg GAY. A lesbian woman. Successful. Sexual orientation- towards other females. Shouldn't be used as an insult.

Again, I'm fully aware what 99% of society means when they say 'gay'....I was just explaining why I feel it's ok that I use it. And I'm not too sure what the  face was for at the end....again all I said was that I was NOT referring to someone who was gay.

Okay, I'm not really going to get into this, but . . .

People forget that "gay" and "retarded" are not the only words that have been corrupted like this. "Dumb" originally meant "mute," but now people use it regularly to mean "unintelligent." "Imbecile," "moron," etc. were originally technical terms referring to different levels of mental retardation. How many people use them that way today?

I'm sure there are a million more examples.

Do I think it's a good thing that people use "gay"/"retarded"/"ghetto" to mean "bad"/"stupid"? Not really -- but given the way language evolves it's pretty much inevitable.

AGDee 04-04-2004 12:14 AM

My daughter gets on my case when I say "Geez" (she's 10 and Miss Morality of the Universe). She thinks that it is an abbreviated version of J. C. I think it's more like a contraction for Gee Whiz. What do ya'll think?

When I worked with adolescents on inpatient psych units, I didn't allow cursing and would make a game out of having them come up with alternate words like "Fudge". We used to have fun with it and I got my point across to them. The kids would start to say a word and I'd finish with one of our "alternate" words and we'd all end up laughing.

The schools really get upset with "pissed off" and "sucks" but those don't really bother me that much.

Dee

FHwku 04-04-2004 03:55 AM

AXjules, those people on the beach are wearing shoes. on the beach. the dude looking at the camera looks like he's singing and the bridesmaid is singing louder. beach etiquette says, "no shoes on the beach."

and you followed up the picture of gay, frolicking people with giant rosie head. pre-mullet.

nucutiepie 04-04-2004 07:20 AM

Hey...this is my first post in a LONG time (sorry, I kinda disappeared for awhile, but im back!!!)

I agree with hating the word gay - it grates on my nerves every time I hear it i think it is the most awful thing!

For whatever reason I hate the word vagina - I think its ugly. Couldn't we call it something prettier?

mmcat 04-04-2004 08:57 AM

i'll give you a challenge...try to wean high school students off the f word.
i tell them it's an action verb, but not in school.
