Cheap linens

Yes I know I sound gay for this. I don't care.

Where can I buy a white duvet cover for really really cheap? Everything I see that's normal and white is rather pricey. Come on chicks, you know where to get the linen so cough up the info!

-Rudey

kddani 03-30-2004 10:38 PM

try TJ Maxx. For something like duvet covers it could be hit or miss, but you might be able to luck out and find something at a great price, and probably a decent quality. They usually have a lot of Ralph Lauren and those sorts of brands.

Points to Rudey for knowing what a duvet cover is :)

Peaches-n-Cream 03-30-2004 10:39 PM

Macy's

KillarneyRose 03-30-2004 10:41 PM

There's a chain of stores called Tuesday Morning where you can buy name brand linens really cheap. It's one of those places where they're constantly getting in new merchandise so if you don't find what you want one day it may be there next time.

Since I'm so nice, I found the Tuesday Mornings in the Chicago area and you can see if any of them are near you...

You might try Overstock.com... They sometimes have good prices on expensive items. (But, sometimes, they are still too high...) Just a shot.

kddani 03-30-2004 10:47 PM

also check out ebay- they have a ton of that sort of stuff at great deals.

GC ladies = Rudey's personal shoppers

chideltjen 03-31-2004 01:28 AM

ross, marshalls and any sort of consignment store. Also... if you have a craiglist.org in your area, I would check it out. people sell stuff for nothing there.

unless you need it immediatly... wait til target or mervyns has a sale.

OtterXO 03-31-2004 01:50 AM

Seriously, go to ikea. My friend got a really cheap duvet cover there-nothing exciting but if you want white then you're set. I also recommend overstock.com, I got a couch cover on there a few years back and it was like 40% of the original cost!

bruinaphi 03-31-2004 02:05 AM

For high thread count and good quality you should check out Tuesday Mornings like Killarny Rose said or if you want to order online checkout

www.overstock.com

OR

www.smartbargains.com

Also, Rachel Ashwell just released a line at Target called Simply Shabby Chic I believe she has a white duvet cover as a part of the collection that is good quality and inexpensive.

Have you seen that episode of Will & Grace where Will is pretending to be straight so Grace tells him not to talk about his dustruffle with the decorator?

BTW...try SmartBargains.com they have high thread count Egyptian Cotton for reasonable prices...gotta hit them at the right time though.

Rudey 03-31-2004 12:08 PM

OK I will be erasing this thread after I figure all this stuff out because I rarely feel this...well you know.

I don't understand exactly what a duvet cover is. I just wanted a comforter. Evidently they're not called comforters anymore. Why I don't know, but I ended up with a "duvet" and it is down. Now from what I'm told I can't wash a duvet so I have to get a duvet cover. This doesn't sound ridiculous to you??

To make it more ridiculous, stores charge $100 for something that's like 2 sheets sewn together so I can put my duvet into it. I'm not stupid. I don't understand what's going on here exactly but that's a scam. In fact I didn't like paying 50 bucks for a sheet set. Yes I know, that's nothing compared to the expensive stuff. But it's ridiculous. People this isn't a complicated piece of clothing...it's a giant piece of cloth.

Now that I'm done being upset. Does it matter what thread count I get? Is 250 a decent count?

And the suggestion of TJMaxx and stuff was good except all their stuff had flowers or some strange pattern on it. I'm not a girl and I'm not gay so flowers just don't work.

-Rudey

WCUgirl 03-31-2004 12:13 PM

The higher the thread count the better - it means it's going to be a lot softer and more comfy! A thread count of 250 is okay - it's actually about average.

33girl 03-31-2004 12:19 PM

Just for shits 'n' giggles I looked onine, and there are actually sheets that have a 1,250 thread count. I thought that was a bit ridiculous.

Jadey28 03-31-2004 12:23 PM

Definately check out Smartbargins.com. I just bought a duvet cover that is 600 Thread Egyptian cotton (think really really soft, like a cloud) for $35.00. Once shipping and handling were added, it only cost me $42.00. I don't think I've ever gotten such a deal.

Dude are you messing with my head? :( All I see for that price is the stuff that looks weird like this

-Rudey

Peaches-n-Cream 03-31-2004 01:18 PM

A full/queen duvet cover for $69.99 from macy's.

www.overstock.com has duvet covers that are even less expensive.

ISUKappa 03-31-2004 01:45 PM

From Target -- $69.99

One word of warning about duvet covers--the duvet tends to slide around inside it. There are clips you can buy to keep it from doing so, otherwise you end up with all the duvet down by your feet.

winnieb 03-31-2004 11:24 PM

Rudey,
Marshall Fields (online) is having a sale on bedding, you might want to check out the website --- http://www.target.com --- If you have some spare time I would run into Marshall Fields and take a look around the home department. If you go into the store, touch the sheets and notice the feel of the different thread count. I would go with a 350-400 or higher threadcount. They are little pricey, but worth it. As GP said, once you go up on threadcount you will never go down.
Good luck with the whole bedding thing.

-wendi

--also Eddie Bauer has some nice duvet covers--you might what to check there as well.

KillarneyRose 03-31-2004 11:28 PM

Rudey, are we all giving you a headache with this talk of duvet clips and thread counts??? After you go and buy the damn thing you need to go to a truck and tractor pull or something to get your testosterone level back up there ;)

All the poor guy wants to do is sleep! lol

33girl 03-31-2004 11:40 PM

I'm verklempt. This is what Greek unity is all about - helping Rudey find a non-ghey duvet cover.

I feel the love.

greeklawgirl 03-31-2004 11:56 PM

LOL, all this talk of duvets made me realize that its time to change our winter/fall comforter set to our spring/summer set. I love my down comforter and duvet cover! ;)

This is ridiculous. All I wanted was a sheet, a pillow, and a blanket/comforter/duvet/whatever you call it. I did not ever want to learn what a sham was. In fact it really really bothers me that people get pillows that they don't sleep on. I still do not understand why anyone needs a bedspread because why don't you just put a sheet over the boxspring if you don't want to show it.

And now after all this I find out my thing is going to slide around :( Well I'm not buying duvet clips. I will buy bobby pins and bobby pin that together and if that doesn't work I will staple it. This isn't even enjoyable one bit. This isn't like buying a lacoste shirt or finding a fun Hermes tie with little horses on it. Thanks everyone for your help though. :)

If you really don't want to go spend the money on a real cover.. make one. I did! :D

I bought a fabric from wal mart and sewed it together. it cost me around $15-20. Its super easy. If you can't sew.. find someone (bribe them:p) to sew it for you. I made mine and one for my roomate in less than an hour.

**All you have to do is measue your comforter, get enough fabric for 2 sheet like pieces (get them about a 1/4 yard bigger than you need), put them print side in.. sew 3 of the edges together, put the comforter in, sew the last edge.. PRESTO! :) :)**

Mine was cheap and sort of cheesey, but it has lasted me 2 years of college thus far!

 :D

ETA Because I have a typing problem :p

Jadey28 04-01-2004 05:19 PM

Sorry Rudey,
Not trying to mess with your head. I must have found it at the right time because there aren't too many nice duvet covers on the site right now for that cheap. But that one you posted isn't half bad. ;) :p

I get cold verrry easily, plus I live near the coast where its cooler. I'd rather use the down comforter than keep the heat on all night. :)

AlphaGam1019 04-01-2004 05:29 PM

down comforters rule!

cutiepatootie 04-01-2004 05:57 PM

definitely try Ross or TJmaxx or Marshalls.......Even ebay if yoru looking for a certain brand.

Rudey 09-27-2004 11:59 PM

Where would I find this for cheaper and without all the fou fou frilly stuff? http://www.pratesi.com

-Rudey

Sister Havana 09-28-2004 12:42 AM

Try Kohl's. They always have good sales. Looking on the website just now, I found this, which comes in white (ivory) and costs $51.99 (full), $58.49 (queen) or $64.99 (king). They have much more of a selection at the store than they do on the website.

I also found this for 59.99 at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

(Second link is now fixed.)

wrigley 09-28-2004 01:22 AM

I went to Sears.com and found the following.

http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/searc...=searchresults

Scroll down to Colormate Duvet Set you get the the duvet cover and 2 shams $49.99 regardless of size. It's the same price.

RUgreek 09-28-2004 01:38 AM

http://www.webdango.com/webdango/dow...=colPrice&nar=

Sailboat comforter, 14.99

not manly enough, plain white wool comforter for 36.99

I don't see what the obsession with frenchy foo fagnasties or duvets (whatever you call 'em). If this stuff isn't high enough quality, oh well. Good luck on the hunt!

Anyway, Rudith, was there something specific from Pratesi you were looking for or did you just like that style? There's a lot of good home outlets at the outlets in Kenosha and also the ones in Aurora (I think) but I don't know if you have a car or not.

I'm very easily sold with ads and they were the only company to have an ad in CS magazine.

I just don't like the idea that this is a simple piece of cloth...it's not intricate clothing and it costs so much.

And no, I drive a porsche. OK no I take public transport and cabs everywhere so I guess I'll just stick to buying online.

Rudey 12-01-2005 10:32 PM

How do you know how thick a comforter is? If I'm ordering online I don't know how to tell. And I shouldn't care about the thread count if I'm gonna put a cover over it right?

And what colors go with pea green that won't make me little miss princess sparkle by the way? Don't ask.

But Rudey, you'd make such a lovely little miss princess sparkle!

I'm not really sure how you can tell how thick it is online, because i'm sure they could make anything look nice and fluffy. One of the downfalls of online shopping :(

Pea green, maybe like a tan or taupe? Not like total dark brown, but a medium to light brownish shade? Not a princessy combination.

I am not sure how to tell by looking at an online picture. If it is a company with good customer service, call and ask them. Eddie Bauer has some nice linens, and if you call their customer service they should be able to get the item and describe it to you.
Thread count doesn't matter as much on a comforter, but it does matter some. You don't want it to look as if it belongs on a bed at a cheap motel (or do you?)
As far as color-- I agree with Dani-- a tan or taupe, or khaki would look good with pea green.
That microsuede stuff is popular now, and it soft- I have seen it in tan / khaki color.

Good call. The mix in textures sorta adds some depth visually.

<-- sitting on her khaki microsuade armchair with her feet up on the matching ottoman.

This thread reminds me that I want to get a down comforter
