I quit smoking!

I started smoking in middle school & quit cold turkey when I went to high school. I picked the habit up again in 2002 but I'm so happy to announce that I've quit! It hasn't been that hard, but I've chewed a lot of sugar free gum! :)

The only time I wish I could smoke again is when I'm drinking. Its so hard when all of your friends still smoke & encourage you to do so as well! :( But I quit cold turkey again (a few weeks ago actually) & I'm going to do what I can to stay smoke free! :D

AlethiaSi 03-30-2004 09:19 AM

yay! congrats! don't give up though!!! :p

OleMissGlitter 03-30-2004 10:23 AM

Congrats! I quit through a program here at work! I've been nicotene and smoke free since February 3, 2004! I am not on the patch or drugs either. I do have some Nicorette gum I can chew if I need it but I don't use it that much! I also go see a Pharmacist Counselor once a week to talk and to see answer some questions. The program I'm in is a research program here at Ole Miss, it is free to staff and students! Anyway, congrats and congrats to me too!
Oh and I haven't gained any weight either! It's all about knowing the facts!

Lady Pi Phi 03-30-2004 10:44 AM

Congrats!!!

I keep saying I'm going to quit. And last night in a bout of smokers cough I thought I was going to cough up a lung. I said I was going to quit and what did I do this morning...I had a smoke
:(

I don't think cold turkey is for me. I think I am going to try the gum.

Best of luck!

Congrads!!! :D Your lungs will thank you!

Definitely congrats to you! Quitting smoking is so much harder than people want to admit!

Good luck to you! I've tried both the gum & the patch once before when I tried to quit smoking a year ago. The gum was pretty gross & the patch made me sick! Make sure you only take the dose that is necessary! The smallest dose of the patch available (that I could find @ the time) was for someone who smoked 5-10 cigarettes a day! And I only smoked 3-4 tops! I was sick for days and I only wore the darn thing for 5 hours!

And so will the lungs of others! I'm glad I don't walk into meetings where I work smelling like smoke anymore-those that do are always looked at like black sheep!

wreckingcrew 03-30-2004 12:00 PM

i haven't had a cigarette since the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, November 24th i think

I went cold turkey, but it was a bit easier for me, i only smoked seriously for about 2 years in college, and didn't start till my junior year, and then i was only a casual smoker.

But congrats!

As someone who interviews, I always advise job seekers that, if you can change one thing, quit smoking! All things being equal, the non-smoker will get the job over the smoker every time!

Congratulations!! You've just improved your whole future!!

Dionysus 03-30-2004 01:14 PM

Congrads. Addiction sucks.

Jill1228 03-30-2004 02:31 PM

Congrats, take it one day at a time. I quit cold turkey on 2/8/97 and let me tell ya I smoked like a fiend! I did what I had to do to stay smoke free. The first 2 days were hell but on day 3 I knew I was going to make it.

I haven't had a cigarette since

annice22 03-30-2004 03:08 PM

Congratulations your lungs are thanking you:) :) :) :D

Xylochick216 03-30-2004 03:27 PM

Congrats, and thank you from a non-smoker! I'm allergic to smoke, and I hate going out and breathing in second-hand smoke. I'm sure you'll have lots of friends who will thank you, too, for giving them cleaner air :)

This sounds crazy but now that I don't have a roommate anymore who smokes, I got my own townhouse last month, it is so easy for me. I did have a moment at a bar two weeks ago but my friends are SO SUPPORTIVE and I realize that the two years I spent smoking were a waste of time and money. I'm going to save 1400 dollars a year not smoking! WOW! My mom and my younger sister also quit smoking recently, it was sort of like a family thing. I know this sounds weird, but my skin glows now be/c I'm not filled with those toxic poisons and I have more energy and I am not out of breath when I work out!

norcalchick 03-30-2004 04:47 PM

congrats! i know it's hard. i haven't smoked for over two months now. luckily i had only smoked for 2 months, but i was a chainsmoker  would have like 2 1/2 cigs at one sitting. not good. hopefully it hasn't done too much damage.

I had a customer come in yesterday who had quit smoking also. She spent the same amount on cigarettes in a year too. So to reward herself she bought a ring so as to reward herself and remind herself of how far she's come.

I like the sound of that ;)

You're the same as me! I smoked in junior high, then quit when tennis season came my freshmen year. Then as soon as tennis season was over my senior year I started up again.

At the end of February I started having breathing problems, so I quit. Cold Turkey. I craved cigarettes and I'd try one, but then I'd feel like I was gona throw up. I was stressed one night, so I had a menthol and I'll now have one once in a while. Sometimes I'll crave one, especially at the bar.

I'm opening up a ROTH IRA instead! Although, I've always wanted a pink sapphire....hmmm

tinydancer 03-30-2004 11:24 PM

Good for you!! I really should stop, but I am sort of afraid that I would snack more than is good for me. I'm already trying to do something about my weight. Don't know if I can try to "fix" everything at once!

Jill1228 03-30-2004 11:26 PM

Tiny, I know what ya mean! We ain't EVEN gonna talk about the weight I gained after I quit!

Unregistered- 03-30-2004 11:35 PM

Sigh...I wish I could quit.

I've been smoking since Junior Year HIGH SCHOOL, and since then I've tried cold turkey at least 6 times, much to no avail.

It's a tough, tough habit to give up...and I hate being looked down on because of that.

Cold turkey just doesn't work for everyone. :(

CatStarESP4 03-30-2004 11:48 PM

Congratulations!

My mother smoked when she was younger. She quit cold turkey after she met my father (about 40 years ago). She hadn't had a cigarette since.

Good luck!

You are right! Which is why you should investigate what free programs your job/school/city/state offer! There are plenty of programs that are free to low cost that you could sign up for! Good luck!!!

Congrats! I've never been a smoker, but I am a nail-biter, and I know how hard it is to break that terrible habit. Best of luck to you~you have now motivated me to stop biting my nails. :D

You know what you should get. They have polish designed to help people stop bitting their nails. It tastes really bad.
I don't know the name but you should be able to find it in any drug store.

_Lisa_ 03-31-2004 11:27 AM

If you have a Sally's Beauty Supply near you, I used to work there, & I know they carry the nail-biting stuff. Although, from what I hear, it isn't as nasty as it should be & most people I know that have tried it end up biting their nails w/ it on!

I would suggest keeping something else around to help w/ your oral fixation. ;) Like gum or mints or something else you can always chew on!

SATX*APhi 04-06-2004 11:48 AM

Congratulations! Keep it up! Don't let your friends try to give you cigarettes, especially when you are drinking! I've also given up smoking and have done quite well. Everyone knows I've quit and even if I ask for one (in my tipsy-ness), they won't give me any. :)

Lady Pi Phi 04-08-2004 02:01 PM

I haven't had a cigarette in 3 days!!!!!!!!

I'm trying to quite. Although, I've noticed I am eating more. Damn, there goes weight watchers.

Well I can only do 1 thing at a time.

ETA: Did I mention that I am dying here!!!!

ZeroCool 04-08-2004 04:25 PM

congrats, beating smoking is pretty hard.

AOPIHottie 04-08-2004 05:12 PM

I quit smoking as part of my new years "healthy" resolutions, and have had 3 smokes since then. Everyonce inawhile I get a horrible craving, so I will stick pens or straws in my mouth til it dies down some, I also bought a HUGE bag of suckers and that helped alot-yes, its a lot of sugar, but it was better for me than stuffing my face with tons of more fattening food. I know how hard it is, but STICK IT OUT. it gets easier! congrats all of us who quit!!!!!!!!

Lady Pi Phi 04-08-2004 06:54 PM

I broke down and a 1 1/2 cigarettes after work :(

I was so bored out of my mind and I was suffering because I hadn't had one and I broke down an bought a pack :(
