Whats the most money a single item of clothing or accessory has cost you?
I was wondering what the most money some of you handbag/shoes/clothes consumers have spent on a single item?
And did you feel guilty afterwards? And did you find out you could have gotten it much cheaper elsewhere? |
I spent $1200 on a handbag and I never regretted it. That was several years ago and I still use it, so it seems like a wise investment.
|
My good handbags have been gifts so I didn't spend any money on them, but I did spend a conservative $200 on a neat pair of Doc Martens once. That's not really a lot, but this was in high school so it was a fortune to me then! If I had $650 lying around, I'd get some Louis Vuitton sandals like Jessica Simpson has.

$900+ for my senior uniform boots. Course, the barrels on mine were a BIT bigger than this guys :D i'd do it again Kitso KS 361 |
I have lots of high-end stuff (a huge weakness of mine) but I hate paying the high prices. So most of my expensive stuff has been obtained on sale.
Prada bag--originally $400, I paid $200 at Saks Off Fifth Chanel sunglasses--originally $250, I paid $180. Those are just a few examples. |
My wedding dress was $1000. I LOVE it and plan to keep it as an heirloom.
My mother bought 10 extra yards of material in case I wanted to make a ring pillow, etc. But, before we were married, I decided to keep the material and make baby blankets out of them... We will bring Max home in his new blanket. (It's the satin from the dress with a softer, inner lining... ) The blanket should be made by June 10th! BTW, I have never regretted spending a bit extra to find a dress that was perfect for me. I do not regret skipping the all-popular David's Bridal in favor of a bridal boutique. David's Bridal had ugly dresses then. And, the saleslady kept ignoring me in favor of the girls who shopped with their mothers. Then, when I demanded someone help me, they tried to tell me anything I put on was THE dress for me... At the boutique, they would tell me if I looked like crap in certain styles! (Maggie Sottero is an awesome company. The dress was PERFECTLY made to my exact measurements...) |
I guess I have two such items:
I bought my stainless Rolex Oyster Datejust watch to celebrate a promotion and I *think* I paid about $2,600 for it. I still wear nearly every day 13 years later. I bought a gorgeous, beaded Badgley-Mishka gown to wear to one of Mr. KR's Navy functions while we were dating. I recall it being in the same price category as the Rolex, more or less. After two kids, I most definitely do not fit in it anymore but it is waiting patiently in the back of my closet just in case it should ever be called back into action! :) |

EVERYONE in my small town goes to David's Bridal... And, every wedding I have been to in the past two years has had the EXACT same dress...No joke!!! Needless to say, I shocked people with an ivory and cafe au lait dress:) |
My wrangler jeans accompanied by my no fear tshirt cost me a heavy penny.

I will have to scan one in... I looked on the site to see if the style was still offered. But, alas, it's no longer offered.. (I got married in Dec. of '02.)
I will try to have one up by tomorrow night. |
I would have to say my wedding dress also. But I was lucky and was able to purchase the sample dress for 1/2 price because it was being discontinued. And it rolled in at a whopping $400 with alterations!
I grew up in a very frugal family, old habits die hard. Someday soon, though, I will treat myself to an expensive classic handbag. And I will not feel guilty about it. |
Chalk another one up to the wedding dress. I managed to get it for around 40% off by ordering it online, but it was still the most expensive clothing I've ever purchased for myself by far.
When you add in the veil, the shoes, and the undergarments, it cost a small fortune, but I've never regretted it for a second. I looked like a princess! :) |
My Spyder ski suit.
|
I didn't buy it, I got it for Valentine's Day from my BF and it did cost a pretty penny... my Louis Vuitton purse and wallet = more than 1K ...eeek! but i love it! it's so pretty and it's new and i've always wanted one :) :) :)

Another one with the wedding dress. It retailed for about $2000, but I got it from RK Bridal for $1200. Add in another $100 or so for alterations, plus the veil, plus undergarments....but I love my dress! I *could* have spent more (there was an Amsale I fell in love with, but I restrained myself and went with my dress, because it was perfect and it was in silk like the Amsale, I just wasn't paying for as much of a name)
Next would have to be my Kate Spade. I think I paid around $200 for it. I've used the hell out of it and its still in perfect condition, so I don't regret that one bit. |
I have a pair of black suede high heeled shoes that were $250. The only problem is my feet grew one size and now I can't wear them anymore. I gave them to my mother and she wears them now, so they are getting use.

My senior prom dress was almost $600. Outrageous for prom-I know-but it was so pretty that my parents bought it for me!

$288 on my last formal for a formal banquet that I'm going to April 24th. Price didnt include the alterations........they had to cut seven inches off the bottom and it was four layers, plus take up a strap..........so I dont know how much more it's going to cost me....I'll find out April 7th when i pick it up.........and then I'm going into hiding (I used my dad's credit card to pay for it and shit is going to hit the fan because I bougth shoes and a purse and jewelery to match and it's already over 400 bucks).
|
I'm thinking probably a couple dresses I have that were around $400 or $500 each. But, these aren't things I bought myself, my parents did.
I tend not to spend tons of money on clothes (except I like nicer jeans - they are usually around $150 - $200), but once I get a little farther along in my career, I will! |
I have spent over $135 on my prom dress in my senior year of high school, and I brought it at David's Bridal. It was a purple long dress. I wanted to get the $170 dress, but I like the cheaper dress better.
|
I think my senior prom dress was $250 before my employee discount...hurray for working at the mall.
I'm going to be ridiculousl once I get my JD, but I'll have earned it. |
Whoa. I can't think when I've ever spent that much money on a single article of clothing as some of you have. I think the most I've spent on a formal dress was just shy of $100, and I got one awesome one on Ebay for $15!
Dropping $100 on a pair of shoes or a purse still seems like a LOT to me...but then again I am still a broke-a$$ college student so perhaps things will be better when I have a decent job of my own. |
If bridal dresses count, I spent $135.00 on my bridesmaid dress. Plus the $75.00 for alterations. :( However, I did get to wear it for my boyfriend's formal, so I guess it's not that bad.
|
My wedding dress was $1000 w/ veil, headpiece, etc... but I don't ever regret that it was a beautiful off white, off the shoulder lace dress.
The one purchase I'm not sure if I regret yet or not is the bridesmaids dress that I have yet to pick up or even see in person, since we live in a different part of the state and I had to send in my measurements, the dress has already cost me $300. I can't even imagine what the alterations will cost since I just got a call saying that there are yards of extra fabric on each dress. I just keep repeating to myself I love my sister in-law and she has good taste, I love my sister in-law and she has good taste.... :) |
$150 for Nike Air Max in 1997. http://www.instyleshoes.com/images/kicks/302973961.jpg
Never again. I am too old to be spending 75 bucks per foot. |
