GC'ers, Are you a turtle?
 

I am curious to know if there are any turtles on GC...

If you don't know what I am talking about, don't worry.

If you ever go to the National Air and Space Museum (the main one, not the annex at Dulles), in the 'Apollo to the Moon' exhibit you'll see some cue cards made by Apollo 7 commander Wally Schirra. One of them asks Chief Astronaut (and fellow Original Mercury 7 member) Deke Slayton 'are you a turtle?' Deke, being an initiated Turtle, gave the proper response to the question on a private comm channel.

YBYSAIA! And I can't believe that you started this thread because I was going to last week when I found my old Turtle card from 1971! It's signed by the Imperial Turtle of Dixie....

Now you have piqued my interest... what is a turtle and how do you become one? I thought it was a DZ thing when I first read it.

I got turtled as a pledge of APO in 1993. Since then I've turtled several people myself. :D I thought it was just an APO thing at first.

My card says that we can subscribe new Turtles. It tells how and you know what I mean!;) But are we allowed to do it online?

I thought it was just an APO thing for a VERY long time as well.

I'm not but we do have a Turtle Club in Clear Lake.

I was turtled when I pledged APO as well. This was in spring of 1997 at a hotel in Denton :) I had a TON of trouble not laughing...and...thinking pure thoughts;)

I know that I had my card when I moved to RI, but I honestly do not know where it is now. I think it must be in with all my memorbilia (sp?).

I almost forgot...after I was turtled, I found out that my father was one...he and a bunch of the early astronauts had a lot of fun with it in the sixties.

There was some story about another of the astronauts being asked if he was one on national TV and he replied, "I'll buy you that drink.":D

I heard that story about Bill Clinton too. :)

I think this is another secret society. I think I heard that both Bush and Kerry are members. (Hee Hee)

It's pretty much an open secret the standard response given by all Turtles wheresoever dispersed! Woe be to the initiated Turtle who forgets or claims ignorance when challenged by a fellow Turtle! :)

On a similar bent, increasing numbers of units in the U.S. military utilize 'challenge' coins to recognize each other. Originally limited to elite units such as SEALs, Special Forces, Rangers, etc. they've pretty much become a fixture to many other units.

The rules for a coin challenge are simple: if you challenge someone to produce their coin, they must do so within 30 seconds or they must buy you a drink of your choice. Leaving the coin at home is no excuse.

But of course! :)

The Imperial Turtle of Dixie was my Pawpaw, Jimmie Morris. 💚 If he initiated you in 1971, I'm guessing that you were in Mobile, and likely a member of the Shaw High School Marching Band....? Or perhaps you were somehow involved with the Senior Bowl? Am I right? ☺️ Of course, I was also initiated by my beloved Imperial Turtle of Dixie, though he had my cousin ask me the questions in private, as he was much too proper a man to discuss such things with his Granddaughter. Pawpaw died peacefully in his sleep several years ago at my parents' home in Ellijay, GA, but not before he lived a full life with an incredible legacy. His wife, my Meemaw, Margret Morris, left us a few years later. I miss them terribly, so your post warmed my heart. ❤️
