Gas Ripoff?

Tell me if I am wrong.

Sign says $1.639 for gas unless you get a car wash ($1.439)
Credit card receipt is based on $1.639 x 8.601g = $14.10.
Shouldn't it be $1.439 x 8.601g = $12.38

The diff is 1.72 but the store only credited me $.86. When I questioned the clerk, he gave me $.45 more. I still feel cheated.

If I'm wrong, whom should I complain to?? It's too much of a hassle with the credit card co., but I'm thinking State Consumer Affairs?

mullet81 03-22-2004 07:18 PM

did you get the car wash?!

AGDLynn 03-22-2004 07:44 PM

Got the car wash.

I tried to send an email to Shell but of course it wouldn't take so I am going to write them. I know it's not a lot of money, but it is the principal. And think of everyone that gets gas/car wash.

I never did understand the policy of getting a discount just because you walk inside to charge instead of charging at the pump. What's the difference????

aephi alum 03-22-2004 08:06 PM

You only pay $1.639/gal???

I wouldn't get my car washed there in future... :)

Everybody stop with the gas talk.

Be thankful you don't live on Oahu, where it's effing $2.12 a gallon.

Be even more thankful that you don't live on the Big Island, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, or Lanai where it's $2.30 + a gallon. And that's without a car wash, thank you.

That's what we pay in California also.

It is about 1.65 in Kansas City. It is costing me about $45 to fill my tank, and I can't even get to work for one week on that~!! (yeah so i drive a gas guzzling SUV!!!)

Sister Havana 03-23-2004 01:54 AM

$1.65-$1.75 out here in the western suburbs of Chicago, much higher in the city. I'm just glad I have a small car! It's nuts.

cutiepatootie 03-23-2004 03:16 AM

$2.08 here in good ole so california

GeekyPenguin 03-23-2004 03:34 AM

It is ranging from $1.62 at the gas station you might get shot at if you use to $1.81 at the Jesus Freak station in the village where my parents live. I compromise at $1.78 at the station on the way home.

lifesaver 03-23-2004 03:52 AM

$1.62 in San Antonio.

Its all about what the market will bear.

When gas prices are lower theres always a $.10 sperad between grades.

When prices are elevated like now - theres only a $.03 or $.04 difference between grades. Interesting....

AOX81 03-23-2004 07:56 AM

By my house outside of Cleveland I can get gas for ~$1.50. If I drive anyplace else it runs between $1.60 and $1.70.

ADPiSAI 03-23-2004 09:41 AM

current gas prices here (middle of nowhere, Quebec) are equal to almost $2.50 US a gallon!!

oceanphi01 03-23-2004 10:15 AM

It $1.72 here in Melbourne for regular unleaded. that's more expensive than around DC!!!!!

ZTAngel 03-23-2004 10:24 AM

Gas is at an all time high here in Florida, too. I paid $1.69 a gallon on Saturday to fill up my tank.

The lowest gas price in Florida is in Pensacola at $1.61/gallon.
The highest gas price is $1.95/gallon in Key West.

ETA:
Does everyone remember the good old days back in early 1999 when gas prices were at an all time low? Orlando gasoline tends to be the least expensive in the state and I remember driving up to O-Town around January of my senior year in high school and seeing gas for 79 cents a gallon.

Is that an "Imperial" gallon (slightly larger than US I think) and in Canadian dollars? (ooops, sorry, you said US dollars, didn't you?)

Still probablly close to a wash with the more expensive US places.

Gulp! Actuallly, I remember in 1963 when I took my first car to the gas station. "High Test" (Super special premium or whatever they call it today) was 21 cents per gallon. I told the guy (there was no self-serve then) to put in $2.00 worth of High Test -- and it wouldn't fit.

Turns out the Austin Healy Sprite only had a 6 gallon tank.

Nice Rudey.

The site shows what I already knew.. the gas station at Danforth and Santa Fe always has the best prices. $1.52 today.

Gotta love the cheap Oklahoma gas prices :D

Shows what I knew too - that anywhere remotely safe or convienent for me to get gas is always expensive.

Iowa always has ridiculously cheap gas...like $.20-$.30 less than WI. When I went to college on the border I'd go to Iowa to get it because I'd save so much it was worth the drive.

Do any of the rest of y'all have to use reformulated gas? When we first got it here I'd drive to the next county over to fill up because it was so much cheapter and it ran better in my car.

nope. that's converting the liters into US gallons, then converting the Canadian $ to US$.
It's currently 87.4 cents a liter here.
