does your GLO have an official song?
Does your GLO, be it NPHC, NIC, NPC, or even local/independent, have an official song that your members learn and sing?
If so, has it ever changed? And if so, why?? thanks for putting up with my questions.... |
Phi Kappa Psi has three songs that all chapters teach their members; Amici, Noble Fraternity and the Sweetheart Song of Phi Kappa Psi.
|
have the words changed at all, since the songs were first written/adopted?
|
I'm not aware of these songs ever being changed. They all have some words, or phrases, that are slightly archaic.
|
There are certain songs associated with ritual that all sisters know. As far as I know they haven't changed since they were written.
The one "fun" song that I think all Kappas know (along with everyone else and their brother) is "Pat" (a.k.a I'm so happy that I am a). I wouldn't call it our official song, but it's tradition and all Kappas I meet or talk to seem to know it. Other songs may vary but everyone knows "Pat." |

Yes, we do have an official song that all members must learn. I don't believe it has changed since it was written.
Then, of course, we have a whole arsenal of rush/recruitment songs, chants, and cheers, some of which are customized by particular chapters. |
We have songs and chants..
The chants which are universal but universally known at least in our case are never used in mixed company. Our songs are very 1940's-esque. |
My sisters can correct me if I'm wrong, but Alpha Gamma Delta doesn't have just one official song.
We have the "Ten Songs Every Alpha Gam Should Know". :) |
We have a fraternity hymn and other ritual songs. then there are the plethora of chants and cheers, but those probably aren't that universal...

Alpha Phi Omega
(The following information taken directly from the national website)
"The Toast Song is the official fraternity song. It is usually sung at the end of all fraternity functions (meetings, ceremonies, conferences, etc.). The lyrics to the first verse of this song were created in 1925 by Dale Bartlett of Omicron chapter at The University of Iowa. The second verse was written by Robert Northwood of Epsilon Mu at the University of Maryland and were adopted as part of the Toast Song at the National Convention in 1964. The National Fraternity acknowledges the importance of Brotherhood among all people. In 1976, the National Fraternity overwhelmingly voted to include women among its Brothers as full Members. The words in this toast song are interpreted by the Fraternity to include all Members of Alpha Phi Omega." In the past several years, at our national conventions, there have been proposed amendments to change some of the lyrics in the song (where only the word "Brothers" is used to "Brothers and Sisters"), but I don't think any of these amendments have passed. -Nicole |
I believe all Tri-Sigma new members must learn:
"Stately and Royal" "Tri-Sigma Grace" " The Hymn" |
zeta tau alphas
have several songs that every member learns that are sung during ritual events and then we have the zeta blessing, which is sung before meals(the organized, sit down ones, that is!)

"Delta Shelter" is sung at the end of most Delt events. There is also an official Delt Songbook (even available on CD) with ten or fifteen additional "traditional" Delt songs.
I don't think they have changed in many years. |
OTW, I think you're right. I know on the pre-revised website, they had the words listed. Be great if when they reload it, it plays the melodies:D
|
Nothing "Official," But...
Most every Chi Omega knows "Shades" and "Chi Omega Yours Forever."
|
Beta Theta Pi is called the Singing Fraternity and after seeing the responses of others I guess it's with good reason:
Some important songs for Betas (that 98% of all Betas are likely to know)
There are more songs that are important parts of our ritual but how well people knows them varies widely, however I think that all Betas would be able to recognize the song and gradually remember the words of these very important songs, while everyone KNOWS the songs I've listed above. Some of these songs are VERY old, having appeared in the first comprehensive song book assembled by Beta Theta Pi in 1872. Others have been gradually added over the years, with most being added before WWI. |
I don't know about an official song, but every other DZ I've ever run into has known "Delta Zeta Lamps Are Burning."

Sad....When I read the part of fraternity hymn, I started to hum it lol. We have a fun song tho....that I think many AST chapters might know...the oscar myer song..."My sorority has a first name". That's a big hit in my chapter! :D |
Phi Sigma Sigma does have an official hymn it's called lieberstraum... there are also other songs that all of us know that we use mainly during our pref ceremony
The words to Lieberstraum (cause I KNOW you are are DYING to know) are: We love you so Phi Sigma Sigma cherished fraternity our love will grow Phi sigma Sigma until eternity your sphinxhead proud and true binds us all to you where'er we go phi sigma sigma first in our hearts you'll be I believe the tune is an old classical piece that we adopted but I don't *think* the words have changed..... |
Alpha Delta Pi has a national song, and another song that is special to us, we also have a creed song that is sometimes used at pref as well as tons of spirit, recruitment, and sisterhood songs.
|
Well, it would be pretty sad indeed if Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia didn't have lots of songs! We sing at every meeting and other fraternity gatherings. Province and national conventions usually include a "step sing," where brothers stand on the steps of a public building (at our last convention, it was in front of the US Capitol) and sing. We have songbook (the current Centennial edition is our sixth edition) that has probably 50 or so songs in it -- most fraternal but some just general.
Without question, the Phi Mu Alpha song is Hail, Sinfonia!. (For some reason, this and most of the other song links I put in open a browser window as well as RealPlayer.) We sing it at every meeting and gathering. Particular chapters have particular favorites otherwise, but among the wide-spread favorites are: On and Ever Upward! A Sinfonia Anthem The Red and Black A Serenade to a Girl (The Phi Mu Alpha Sweetheart Song) Viva L'Amour and The Sinfonia Parting Song (sung at the end of meetings). And, we have a pretty awesone march: The Sinfonians (Men of Song). It can be played just by band (I have heard it used at University graduations), but as in the Windows Media file I linked, it has a part for men's chorus. Way, way cool! |
ok, so Alpha Phi Omega has a song that has been attempted to change, but hasn't? so does that mean that the rest of the posters who have official songs, those songs have NOT changed since they were written/first sung 50 to 100 years ago?
i'm confused.... |

I don't know if we have an offical song or not, but every Tri Delta knows Tri Delta Grace and Alpha Theta Phi |

Just curious as to why the interest in whether the "official songs" have ever been changed? |
You know, I know the songs for Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia probably better than I do some of DO's songs. I have some recordings of Xi Pi chapter singing them and they make me cry every time I play them :)
DO has a lot of official songs, but the three that every DO knows are: The Prayer DO Pep Song The Keynote of Life |
We have "The Hymn to Alpha Sigma Alpha" used for rituals and pref.
Have you heard the CD Sheila? The old church ladies singing... Other then that, I believe most ASA's know "With an A, With an A, With and A-L-P With a P, With a P, With a P-H-A With and A-L-P and a P-H-A, Alpha Sigs....etc." |
I think *almost* all Pi Phis know the "Pi Beta Phi Anthem" and "Speed Thee, My Arrow".
And pretty much everyone knows "Pi Pi Beta Phi" as well. |

that is soo funny because at my school we have Alpha Gam and Alpha Phi and they both have versions of that cheer as well and on bid day you can hear them both shouting it and it TOTALLY gets stuck in my head. |

Those and "I am a P..." |
We have one ritual song that hasn't changed per se. The original words are all there, but the song had two verses added to it.
We also have a song called Hairy Chested Men that at one time was Hairy Chested TKEs. We don't know which one is the original version, but now we sing Hairy Chested Men. |
We have our official song that we sing, "You've Got A Friend" by Carolyn King. We also have other songs...but they're dirty :p
|
We have a songbook with several dozen old songs mostly written in the late 1800's and about ten that are in general use at all chapters today. The most universal would be "The DEKE Marching Song", followed by "A Son of a DKE", "The Red Hot Spot of DKE". "What Kind of a Man", etc, etc. Many of these seem rather old fashioned but they do seem to work well and retain their popularity among the brotherhood when a bunch of the guys get together and lift a cool one or three.
|
We have the chorale that we learn, it hasn't been changed since it was first presented and its always sung at important ritual type stuff...sooo pretty!

why I'm interested
you asked why I'm interested. i've got a friend in Alpha PHi Omega, and they're talking about changing their official song, and I was wondering what other GLO's had for songs, and if they had ever been changed. thanx for your help
|
We have songs that have been around for ages, as well as songs that are in our ritual. They publish the old Chi O traditional songs in a songbook you can order from National.
I don't think you could go through 4 years of Chi Omega and miss Shades. |
Yo Ho
Well, I've just gotta say, speaking of GLO songs, i love Yo Ho....the Phi Kapps here sing it, and I've heard that other GLO's sing it too, but it's great. The first time we went out as NM's, the Phi Kapp guys sang it to us and I about wet myself laughing so hard........
As far as DG songs?? well, ritual-only songs aside, I'd say that every DG knows Mmm my sisters and Dreamgirl and Out of my Window.....other than that, I don't really know..... |
OMG, I'd forgotten all about the Phi Kapp "Yo Ho" song. My freshman yr I went to their house party and they sang it on the bus all the way to house party. An hour of that and it's engrained in your brain for life.
