are you a fraternity, or a sorority?

I'm trying to find out what women's (or co-ed) GLO's call themselves a "fraternity" as opposed to a "sorority". Anybody want to chime in???

XOMichelle 03-17-2004 12:12 PM

We are Officially the Chi Omega Fraternity. I think the word sorority was coined by Gamma Phi Beta when they were founded although I'm not sure what their official name is.

Pi Beta Phi is also a fraternity for women. The word sorority did not exist when many groups were founded, thus they called themselves fraternity.

Our legal name is Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity, Inc. and we only use "Inc." when it is legally required. We also do not use the term "international" in our name even though we have chapters in another country.

This was touched on, and there's info about it in other threads, but the word "sorority" didn't exist (at least in the GLO world) until Gamma Phi Beta was founded. Sororities founded before that used the word "fraternity." However some sororities founded after GPhiB chose to stick with the word "fraternity."

ADPi was founded before GPhiB, but under a different name. I believe when they changed their name to Alpha Delta Pi, they adopted the word "sorority" with their new name.

Phi Sig is "Phi Sigma Sigma fraternity Inc." Hence making us a fraternity for women

ETA... I wonder why it is that while *most* Npc groups have chapters in Canada and are therefore Intl some put SOOO much more emphasis on the fact that they are international than others ? ....

From my point of view, and from what I have heard from my Canadian sisters, it's insulting when we call ourselves National because we're international, or for instance when talking about HQ calling it "Nationals", because it's International.

That and the fact that it is pretty cool that we have international chapters.

I agree. Alpha Gam emphasizes "International" out of respect to our Canadian sisters. We're proud of them--we want EVERYONE to know they are there and they are just as important as the rest of their sisters in the lower 48! :)

Plus, I would say that "most" NPCs being international is somewhat of a misnomer--AFAIK, only 12 NPCs have active chapters outside of the US. I think that's something to toot our horns about! ;)

interesting... there was a thread about which orgs. had chapters in Canada and I *thought* I head remembered more than 12 being listed... but Greeklawgirl is always a wealth of knowledge of all things NPC :D
Makes me want to contact Phi Sig and tell them we should start embracing our sisters to the north and making certain EVERYONE knows they are there. (Right moosegirl ?)

right! :p

actually I proposed a constitutional change this year asking all instances of "national" be changed to "international"....who knows if it'll go through?

AS far as groups in Canada - 19 NPC have been in Canada, but fewer are still here (thus the 12)

36 NAIC groups have been in Canada - again, not sure how many still have canuck chapters

I personally don't feel the need to add International into our name.

NinjaPoodle 03-17-2004 04:41 PM

We are Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated.

PKTKKG 03-17-2004 05:24 PM

I think our founders were some of the original women's libbers! They wanted something equal to the men on campus, and we are a ladies fraternity. According to my pledge manual, all greek letter groups, whether for men or women, were called fraternities until 1874 when the term sorority was used. And the word sorority was coined for Gamma Phi Beta.
