What is the largest sorority/fraternity chapter?

Browneyedgirl mentioned in Rush that there were two ZTA chapters in her State with over 170 members.

I was wondering what the largest fraternity or sorority chapter is that you know of, either in your group or another, and where it is.

PhiPsiRuss 03-14-2004 04:07 PM

Phi Kappa Psi Chapters

Right now, our Kansas Alpha chapter, at the Kansas University has 98 in-house brothers, and about 150 active. Our Texas Alpha chapter, at UT has about 150 active too.

lifesaver 03-14-2004 05:44 PM

James,

Do we need to be reminded that this belongs in Greek Life?

If we scold the new kids for posting in the wrong places, we need to scold the old ones too.

I know its scary in the Greek Life forum, but you'll be ok. You might even get OTW to hold your hand over in there.

lol

BTW - our OU chapter is 175 or 180 men. In the 90's they were usually around 120, had a membership drop a few years ago and have apparently rebounded.

James 03-14-2004 05:52 PM

Well lifesaver .. . . . I put it here so it would get more observations than chapter ops . . and then when it stops getting posts I can move it and archive it there.

Edited to add: I don't believe I have ever lectured someone on where to post their stuff.

Angels&Arrows 03-14-2004 06:33 PM

The following Pi Phi Chapters have over 200 members. There might be more... but these are ones off the top of my head.

UTx-Austin
Ole Miss
Auburn
Baylor
U Ok
USC
Texas Tech

docetboy 03-14-2004 07:08 PM

Boy, this is easy.

The Fabulous Xi Chapter at the University of Arkansas, Fayatteville.

Current chapter counts put them at about 150-160 I think, and their house holds 100 easily.

This is the baddest Kappa Sigma chapter, and they know it. You don't go down there as a pledge, at all. Hell, you don't go there as an active unless you know your sh*t.

How big is the Phi Mu Chapter at Ole Miss? I know the most recent Phi Class had 91 women! Surely that chapter is over 200. I bet our Bama chapter is at least that big as well.

I will get stats and repost later :)

The Phi Mu chapter is over 200... closer to 250... but you should verify that. I think Hotty Toddy is from the Phi Mu chapter at Ole Miss and can probably verify. The range at Ole Miss is 250+/- to 190+/-, with DG being the largest?

Alabama (according to Greek Life) has 160 members. The range at Alabama is 180-66, with Kappa Delta being the largest!

ZTAngel 03-15-2004 09:38 AM

The chapters at UCF have ranged from 150-200 over the past few years. This due to having pledge classes that have ranged from 65-71 new members.

Looks like your thread got moved anyway....

UCLA

None of the chapters at UCLA have over 200 members. Your chapter at USC may though (although my understanding is that the only two at USC over 200 are Kappa and DG, Pi Phi is always close). Chapter total at UCLA is 115 and most chapters are close to that size. Average chapter size at USC is closer to 165-175. The size of chapters ranges from 115 to 210.

There is also a thread on here somewhere that discusses chapter with over 100 members. I don't have the time to do a search right now, I just remember posting in it a few (?) years ago. Of course it may have been lost in the post-9/11 GC shutdown.

ADPiZXalum 03-15-2004 01:28 PM

I have no idea where ADPi's largest chapter is, but I know Baylor is home to Chi Omega's largest chapter. Campus total is in the low 100s, but some chapters are way over that, and others are way under.

Thank you for the correction... It is our CA Gamma chapter... I miswrote as UCLA, when it is actually USC. I believe, I am at school and unable to look it up, but the CA Gamma has 203+/- members.

Ole Miss has the largest Phi Mu chapter. I'm sure Ole Miss has the largest chapters of many organizations. I actually don't *think* DG is the largest. I actually think there are several chapters larger than DG...but I'm not sure. I think Chi O and Tri-Delt are probably larger. And I actually think KD and Phi Mu might be??? It's possible that DG is bigger though?

I think they're all pretty close in size anyway. We have close to 250. I'm not sure anyone knows which one is the largest..I'm sure it changes all the time too. Every chapter has a couple of members drop out every year...so I'm sure it all just depends on that.

AGDee 03-16-2004 07:18 AM

Our Gamma Delta Chapter at Auburn University has 222. That is our largest chapter!

g41965 03-16-2004 08:12 AM

Oklahoma and University of Central Florida are the biggest DU chapters-around 150 members.

OleMissGlitter 03-16-2004 10:28 AM

The sororities at Ole Miss have anywhere from 190-250 members. I am pretty sure though that the Phi Mu chapter at Ole Miss is the biggest Phi Mu chapter in the USA and Canada. There was an article in their National magazine about their growth and the number of members they have.

For AOII, the bigger chapters are:

U of TN at Knoxville
UGA
Ole Miss
Oklahoma
Bama
Auburn
Florida
Illinois

I'm sure aopirose knows better than I do....

i would have thougth that Miami of Ohio would have been on that list..

DeltaSigStan 03-16-2004 11:04 AM

I believe our biggest chapter is Phi (St. Louis) with 110+

Michigan and Mich State apparently aren't that far offf either.

KEPike 03-16-2004 11:07 AM

The largest Pike Chapter is at Florida State with around 170 men. The next closest chapter(s) have around 120.

aopirose 03-16-2004 12:51 PM

I will only add Kentucky and Ohio University to round out the Top Ten largest chapters after fall FR with UGA being the largest. After spring FR, Indiana knocks out Oklahoma.

I was wondering where Indiana stood as far as large chapters. I know our sorority chapters are pretty large...though I don't think they are over 200 members large! The chapters are easily over 100 members each though...

Okay, Hotty Toddy... Yes, I was bored this afternoon... actually my class was cancelled due to snow! ;)

I have stats for 6 of the 9 chapters at Ole Miss... DG has 240 members... XO 242... Pi Phi 214 and Theta 191. However, I do not have exact numbers on DDD (I am guessing around 260) and Phi Mu at 251? OleMissGlitter will have to help out with AOPi... I do not think I have an accurate number....

OleMissGlitter 03-16-2004 06:57 PM

AOII at Ole Miss, we have 203 on the roll. But that might change because we have two girls who are transferring to UGA and many seniors this year. But I guess all of the sororities will go down in numbers because I know they all have many seniors this year. But I mean, if they go down to 170 they all will still be huge because I don't see us asking a new sorority to recruit this fall yet so quota will probably be high in the 80s again. Anyway, I think Tri Delta has about 270. I think Phi Mu and Tri Delta are the biggest, but I mean all 9 houses are large here and are all very good here. I'd have to say that all 9 sororities are in their top percentage of their GLO's. I know the Phi Mu's here are the biggest and probably one of the top 5 chapters in the country. I also think the Chi Omega chapter here is one of the tops too.

I'm shocked that U of TX isn't number one!! Good going, Auburn ladies!!

shadokat 03-18-2004 03:25 PM

D Phi E's largest chapter is probably the University of Florida with around 170.

33girl 03-18-2004 03:35 PM

I believe our largest chapter is James Madison...they have around 150 I think. After that would be Truman State & Northwest Missouri (or maybe it's Southwest...always get these confused).

Yeah, while I was in Oxford this weekend we were talking about this and no one seemed to know how many members we had. I guess when all of the sororities have so many members its hard to keep up. All of the pledge classes are so large that I'm sure it comes down to which ones keep their members for 4 years.

Sister Havana 03-22-2004 03:00 AM

Alpha Omicron Pi was one of the weaker sororities when I was at IU the first time around...they never met quota back then and even reorganized in hopes of improving before the chapter was closed initially. For them to be the largest sorority on campus now and to be as strong as they are...that just speaks VOLUMES to the people who worked on the colonization and the ladies who are members now. Great job! :)

OleMissGlitter 03-22-2004 11:18 AM

Wow, Sister Havana, thank you for the kind words.

ADqtPiMel 03-22-2004 11:26 AM

Miami of Ohio should be on the list of largest ADPi chapters. We are currently at 186 members.

ZTAngel 03-22-2004 11:45 AM

I don't have ZTA's numbers (Barbara maybe?) but I would assume that our largest chapters are at U of Texas, Auburn, Clemson, U of Florida, U of Central Florida, Florida State, U of Georgia, U of South Carolina, and U of Alabama.
