Info from USC sorority girls?!

Hi guys!

I was just accepted at USC so will be heading over to the States in August, (I'm from London), and I am really interested in joining a sorority! Can anyone tell me a bit about the different sororities at USC??? I'd love to hear about everything.... the good, the bad, the places you go, the things you get up to, what you believe in, anything and everything about your sorority. E-mail me if you like- that'd be great!

Also, if anyone has any links to USC sorority pages that would be fab!

Thanks in advance,

Take care!

Jennifer,
Congrats on your admittance. Ironically I was just checking out the USC website earlier today. I was hoping to find a webpage or at least contact information for my sororities chapter there. NO SUCH LUCK!!!!!

The school has one paragraph, one stupid paragraph, about greek life. But there are 22 sororities on campus. I couldn't tell you the sororities there other than my own.

You might be able to give someone an email or a phone call and gather more information.

the school website is www.usc.edu.

GOOD LUCK AND CONGRATS!!!!!

Here is what I found on the sorority webpages. Are you entering as a freshman? If so, there is a chance you may end up meeting with my daughter. She is still deciding which school to accept. Her dad is a die hard USC fan so that may be a big influence over Univeristy of Pittsburgh or Penn State.

I guess you are talking about University of Southern California and not the University of South Carolina...

Here is what I dug up for you:

Greek Life @ USC

The following Sororities are at USC:

Alpha Chi Omega

Alpha Delta Pi

Alpha Gamma Gamma (never heard of this one...maybe it's local?)

Alpha Phi

Delta Delta Delta

Delta Gamma

Gamma Phi Beta

Kappa Alpha Theta

Kappa Kappa Gamma

Pi Beta Phi

Hope that helps some.

While it does get out dated, try greekpages.com!

Some Schools get insiped about Greeks so is hard to find anything that you can navagate with!:(

If you go to the proper link, and you may hve to muddle through it to find any links!

Major Link is Current Students and work from there!

Good Luck and let us all know! You will have a TON of Pals on here!:)

Thanks, Diamond Delta, for including ALL the USC sororities (not just those from Panhellenic).

The USC chapter of my sorority just won Chapter of the Year at our National Convention this weekend! :)

WhiteDaisy128 03-14-2004 06:51 PM

Hey, I just posted what I found on the USC Greek Life Website that I could find...sorry for leaving people out. :(

GPhiBLtColonel 03-15-2004 04:21 AM

I am a USC alumna. I pledged GFB way way way way back in 1975! (A very long time ago!) But rush is still very competitive and now that I live in the south and have seen a few rushes down here, I can honestly say there are many similarities! Chloe173 is a current ADPi at USC and has posted her personal observations about rush there...you could put her name in the GC search engine and see her comments. I also suggest you start trying to get recommendations now if you can.

Edited to add: I saw on some other posts you made that you were going to NYU and another seemed to indicate you were going to UW Madison or UIndiana Bloomington. Did not see a mention of USC....I am confused!

H0neymoon 03-15-2004 04:30 PM

Well, what happened was, I was accepted at Wisconsin and Indiana, and didn't expect to get into USC. When I got into NYU it was for GSP and I would have had to spend my freshman year in Florence, Italy (since I'm from London, and all international GSP acceptees go to Florence).

Although this was an exciting prospect, I was more interested in the US college experience, and didn't want to miss out on freshman activities, greek life, etc, so chose USC, which also has a fantastic journalism program. I'm so excited about coming to LA, and about the prospect of joining a sorority. I hope that everyone in Los Angeles will welcome a London girl into their world! I hope I can bring something a little different! haha.

You say I should start getting recommendations... could you elaborate on this at all? Who writes recommendation for this type of thing?

Thanks for the info guys, it's been really helpful, and very much appreciated!! Oh, quick question that is sort of random, but it's something I was thinking about today.... I'll be coming to LA in August and obviously staying until xmas break. What's the weather like during those 4 or so months? I have absolutely no idea what sort of clothes to buy/pack, since here in England the weather is TERRIBLE in autumn! Clue me up, girls, I wanna go shopping! haha

Take care,

Jen

XOMichelle 03-15-2004 04:54 PM

Congrats on your acceptance to USC Jen!

Winter, in LA??? he he he.

I'm from Northern California, so the weather is much nicer in LA than it is here, but you can probably stick to spring or early fall clothes for LA's "winter". You'll want to bring a jacket, but you won't need a parka unless you want to go ski. Go look at weather.com for forcasts, it'll tell you how hot it is there.

ll,
Michelle

H0neymoon 03-15-2004 05:24 PM

Thanks for the advice Michelle!

Rudey 03-15-2004 05:26 PM

Are you cute? We can tell you what the hotter sororities are. But you should go where you feel like you fit in and not where you think you should fit in. Do you understand what I'm trying to say? It's very important.

-Rudey
--Oh and bring some money, at SC nouveau riche is a varsity sport

H0neymoon 03-15-2004 05:42 PM

I'm a sexy party girl!

XOMichelle 03-15-2004 05:46 PM

Rudy, don't lead her astray.

I'd read some of the other rush forums on here, and go into the thing with your mind open. Talk to Chole too! You will know which groups you like and feel at home at when you rush.

I'd also look at the websites that were listed plus the USC Panhellenic information, and the national websites of the sorority to get an idea of what sororities do.

H0neymoon 03-15-2004 05:49 PM

I'm not gonna pretend to be something I'm not. I like to have fun, I LOVE boys, I take care of the way I look, I drink a lot when I party, I don't take drugs or smoke, but I'm no angel either. But at the same time, I want to graduate from USC with a degree haha, and not get chucked out early haha. I've got a good head on my shoulders, I'm not brainless, but I'm no geek. And I'm all about friendship too.... I'm a not a fan of bitchiness amongst 'friends'. I want to make real strong friends for life with whom I can have amazing memories to share.

bruinaphi 03-15-2004 07:50 PM

I've been an advisor at USC now for 8 years. It is a very competitive greek system and I don't think you'll find many women you'd consider "brainless." We've never had a student fail out of school in our chapter, and the sororities' GPAs are consistently above the all women's average.

Each of the chapters at USC is large and you will find a variety of personalities. With chapters the size of the ones at USC you cannot expect to be best friends with each member of the chapter but you will find lasting friendships and amazing women in any of the chapters.

Good luck!

XOMichelle 03-15-2004 08:05 PM

Oh, no one wants you to be someone you're not!! geez, that's not the idea at all. I was chastizing Rudy for categorizing sororities by looks, and trying to tell you stereotypes.

I'm sure you will find a group you like, and who like you. :-)

Eh at the end of the day, when she's there on campus she'll know which sorority is bigger, which has more money, which has more social activities (ie parties more), which attracts girls based on looks (since birds of a feather flock together), etc. There's nothing bad about it.

From a native southern Californian who grew up in the LA area

When you arrive in August, expect it to be HOT, the early part of September will be HOTTER. By the end of September it should cool down to a comfortable 80. By winter break we may have rain, we may have cool weather, we may still be 80.

I now live about 50 miles south of USC and am 4 miles from the beach. It is currently about 75, mornings are extremely foggy because of the marine layer. As we say, plan for all 4 seasons because the weather can change to a different season in a matter of minutes. Quite often you can have 4 seasons in a span of 20 minutes.

Hey Jen I go to USC...

Hey Jen,

My name is Joe, and I've been a student USC for 7 years...I love college life very much. I get excited for you thinking about how much fun you will have when you are here and how many people you will meet and all the things there are to do on campus and around LA.

If you have any questions about USC i'd love to answer them. Of course all usc sororities have their stereotypes which i'm sure you've heard all of them. Don't take too much stock in it all just have a good time but if you want answers you can always IM me at liveem on AIM.

Joe

kk_bama 03-25-2004 12:57 AM

I would freaking DIE to be able to go to USC for a master's degree in journalism. Y'all are making me jealous!

But yeah, all the sororities at USC are good, I have checked them out before. I'm sure they're all smart, beautiful women and they would probably be delighted to have a girl with an accent like yours. (c:

cutiepatootie 03-27-2004 11:54 AM

I would hof loved to have gone to `SC because it would have kick up the notch in my house since my dad is a Norte Dame Alum!

USC is great school and you will find your place in the greek system. Just have fun and ride with it!:)

AOII_LB93 03-27-2004 01:57 PM

To answer your question about recommendations, you probably don't need to worry so much about them since you are from overseas. I know that USC has a competitive greek system, but I know a lot of women who go through with no recs at all and do just fine.

As for weather...well, bring lots of light clothes. It barely gets below 55 here and 45 is a real stretch. Nothing at all like the UK. You'd probably laugh at us all out here because a lot of Californians put on a sweater if it's colder than about 70.

scuthetagirl 03-27-2004 04:18 PM

I don't go to USC, but my best friend does. I think that USC is great because its Greek system is so large. Granted, there's a lot of people rushing, but it's still easier to find your fit, I think. Also, there's a lot of small, equally cool local sororities at USC that aren't so competitive to rush. My best friend is in Phi Beta Chi, a small (but national) Christian sorority, and her roommate is in Alpha Gamma Gamma, a smaller local Jewish sorority. And they're really happy where they are, even though they didn't go Panhellenic. So you see, all kinds of options! Congrats on going to USC! I think it'll be way different than London (I'll let you know, I'm living and interning in London this fall!) in terms of living and stuff, but you'll get the hang of it. And also, Americans love British people. I know I do! Good luck!

H0neymoon 03-27-2004 05:07 PM

Yeh my plan is to bribe people with cadburys chocolate bars and nestle double cream bars! hahahaha Am I allowed to bring chocolate into the country? I am aren't I?

scuthetagirl 03-27-2004 05:43 PM

Yes, I think you are. I'm sure people will be very appreciative!

cutiepatootie 03-27-2004 05:56 PM

If your offering chocolate i wil be at LAX to pick you up! Because cadbury at easter time are the best! I pretend to buy them for ym son for his basket but hey now i draw the line somewhere hehehehehe :)

H0neymoon 03-27-2004 06:00 PM

Hahahah seriously guys I'm gonna bring a suitcase of the stuff! I'm not the biggest fan of Hershey's and I can't survive without my daily dose of chocolate, forget sex! hahaha so every time i come back to England for the holidays I'll be taking orders for chocolate hahahaha

If you want to know the truth here are the current most popular houses:
Pi Phi
Theta
DG
Alpha Phi.

Pi Phi's are great and have a long tradition of being a top house. They're hot too.

Theta is the cool chill house. Hit or miss with the girls.

DG's are blonde and ambitious. Kind of ditzy, but fun too.

Alpha Phi in the past three years has transformed itself into one of the hottest houses. Those girls can party and know how to have a good time. They are HOT in terms of looks too.

*in my best ditzy blond voice(Ironically I'm blond, not ditzy)* Referring to above post: Wow, I am so going to take the word of a guy in choosing my friends because I have no brain and can't think for myself!

When are people going to learn to read these boards before they start posting? (And yes, this is a rhetorical question.)

I refuse to believe that a chapter is hot unless its in the Barbie thread :p

Seeing is believing.
