Graduation Stoles
We do graduation stoles for the seniors each year (well they seniors are in charge of making it happen). The person who used to do them didn't do a great job last year. and I was just wondering how much ya'll pay to get them done, and if you just use a local seamstress (the route i think we'll probably take) Thanks for any input!
E PS - Sorry if this is in the wrong fourm |
LittleE, I dont think anyone knows what youre talking about!;) ;)
Splain More!:) |
Tom, she means these things that go over graduation robes
link to a search engine page with several examples and embroidered/printed etc with her GLOs letters. Much like some organisation's members wear a colored sash ('belt') matched to their GLOs colors when they graduate. |
DEC, did not think that a was allowed? Just thought what the school allowed and the Colleges allowed for Their Schools of U! Well Degrees to speak!
|
Our College is pretty cool, doesn't control what we wear, other than the gown and hat (though the hat can be modified) so we go all out. I think they are more common with NPHC but not totally sure. Still, any input would be great :)

My local sorority wears stoles at graduation. :)
|
Many LGLOs use these stoles. The first year we used them on our campus, everyone noticed and the next year, ALL the greeks started wearing them! :)

Every chapter in my sorority has stolls for all the graduating seniors when they graduate. We use a local seamstress that makes ours out of white material (I call it wedding dress material) with our letters (GAO) in green with a blue outline. We also have the option to wear the stoll as is or to customize it with our class (Beta for me) year (04) and our name/nickname and our sorority crest if we want to or our family tree can customize it they way they want to. The other way to go is to go online to Greek Nation.com and buy their stolls. Thats what alot of the LGLOS and BGLOS do. I personally don't like the ones they sell, they look like a Mexican blanket and that's not real pretty to wear. Last semester I bought one for my chapter and then I had to buy two more for our Epsilon chapter in Wisconsin and our seamstress has done such a wonderful job on them that Epsilon is now going to try and get our MU and Theta chapters to buy them from her. :D
I can't wait to recieve MINE! Other then earning my letters recieving my stoll is going to be a VERY emotional moment.:D |
Yes, it is an emotional moment when you are presented with your stole. Ours are presented each spring at our National Convention to all graduating seniors and also sisters who earn advanced degrees (but theirs look different), and they you save it to wear later on your graduation day. I'm not really sure where we get ours. We used to have a lady that made them. I was smiling so big when I received mine and I remember I had tears in my eyes. It was really a proud moment.

One of the girls from DG actually had one at our graduation. I am not sure where she got her's... but I know what you are talking about. Have you tried google.com?
|
I know Pi Phi uses RC Sportswear for clothing and they make graduation stoles.
Does your HQ do them? Try the different GLO merchandise websites I'm sure one of them might do graduation stoles. |
Here are a few links to online merchants

All the BGLOs at my college wear them, and the Chi-Os do as well. I want to either start making them for us or order them from somewhere.
|
I've probably seen more GLO graduates wear cords (about the same length as stoles, but braided in the GLO's colors and with tassles on the ends) than I have seen them wear stoles. Cords for at least some groups can be found here.
Purely personal preference, but I like the cords better. |
You can get them from Fratrow.com too
www.fratrow.com I know its in the individual site...don't know about the group order side. I just looked at them yesterday, cause i didn't know what they were. |
We don't do them for sororities/fraternities, but we have honor stoles that are basically the same thing. ODK is in charge of organizing this, and we charge $35 for the stole and $5 after that for extra organizations. I'm not sure how much it costs us or where we get them, though, but I can find out at our meeting tomorrow night.

i wore mine, but i wasn't allowed to...so i had to sneak it in during the ceremony.

At UNLV you can wear anything you want on your robe. But you have to wear the robe, hat and tassel. We decorate our hats here and people go all out. My chapter wears cords in lavender and maroon, we also had another tassel made in lavender and maroon. Our school has a high population of hawaiians and they are draped with Leis. In fact they sell leis at the graduation, so even people who aren't hawaiian wear leis during the ceremony.
|
I'm intrigued about how seniors are presented w/their stoles. Do you do a mini-ceremony type thing? We don't do anything, so i'm curious. We are tyring to make it more ceremonial as the seniors leave. :) If you can tell me please share!

Memories...
I still have my kente stole from when I graduated (back in '97). I had bought mine from Collegiate Greek, back when they had a shop in NB...now everything is on the internet.
|
I graduated in May, and I got my stole at my sorority's regional conference. There are a ton of websites that sell them now.
|
We wore them also, I don't think we were "allowed" to, but no one said anything. I think we got out made by a local seamstress, I still have mine;-)
|
Last year when I went through grad with three of my sisters, we decided to get them made. They are going to do it again this year. The stoles were made to our specifications - we choose stole color, embroidery color, and the symbol. (The owner faxed me a sheet of all the roses they had and we choose the best one)
They were made by The Sash Company and look like: http://www.pdx.edu/media/c/o/commencement_2004_03.jpg and I think we paid something like $35... and they are really high quality! |
I know that chords are the big thing on our campus (I allready know I'm going to have 4 chords to wear and a medal) . I don't know if any GLO's do stoles or not, but I would be HONORED to wear one. Since we just had our badges made (I just got confirmation from my sisters that they are THERE!) I think that stoles would be a great thing to give the seniors at senior rec (where the seniors give away their letters/para).
|
We found a local seamstress to do them for us. We chose a basic design then let sisters personalize them depending on how much they were willing to spend. They looked great, and now the other orgs have started copying us. But we were sooo classy.
One warning. If you use the satin type, and go with white: Be careful if you wear fresh flower leis during graduation. Your stole will get stained. Our Hawaiians had their families bring leis from Hawai'i and my stole got a little discolored. Totally worth it cause we looked so cute, but just an FYI. |
