Thompson Living Large as 'Fat Albert'
Wed Mar 10, 1:23 AM ET Add Movies - Reuters to My Yahoo!

By Chris Gardner

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Fat Albert" is alive and kicking.

Kenan Thompson, former star of Nickelodeon's "Kenan and Kel" and now in theaters with "Barbershop 2: Back in Business" is the new leading man in the adaptation of Bill Cosby (news)'s famed CBS cartoon, "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids."

The 20th Century Fox film follows Fat Albert and his posse of friends, who come to life when they walk out of the cartoon and into the real world. The film will start with animation, move into live-action and end in the animated world.

The project is gearing up for a mid-April start with a cast that also includes Omarion of B2K fame as Reggie, Raven-Symone ("That's So Raven") in the animated part of Danielle, Jermaine Williams ("ER") as Mush Mouth, Jeremy Suarez ("Brother Bear") in the animated role of Russell and Aaron Frazier as Weird Harold.

Director Joel Zwick ("My Big Fat Greek Wedding") will direct the project he boarded nearly a year ago.

Thompson steps into a role once filled by newcomer Omar Benson Miller. Miller was to topline with Forest Whitaker (news) at the helm in early 2002. However, that package fell apart because of a conflict of visions between Whitaker and Cosby, who created the characters.

With Zwick on board, the filmmakers went back to Thompson who had screen tested the first time around with Whitaker, sources said. Cosby co-wrote the original draft of the screenplay, and will serve as a producer.

Thompson is the most recent addition to the cast of NBC's "Saturday Night Live," and his first impression on the Lorne Michaels series was of Cosby. His other credits include "Love Don't Cost a Thing," "Good Burger" and "All That."

O.J. Simpson Accused of Piracy
Mar 8, 3:27 PM EST

MIAMI (AP) -- DirecTV is accusing O.J. Simpson of pirating its satellite television signal.

In a lawsuit filed Wednesday in federal court in Miami, the company demanded the former football star pay DirecTV $20,000.

Federal agents removed satellite TV equipment from Simpson's house in the Miami neighborhood of Kendall during a search in 2001. DirecTV alleges the devices were "bootloaders," for unscrambling the company's signals.

Simpson attorney Yale Galanter was in court Monday and did not immediately return a call for comment.

Police Secretly Watching Hip-Hop Celebs

MIAMI - Police say they are secretly monitoring hip-hop stars P. Diddy, DMX and others in South Florida to protect them, but celebrities and critics see the surveillance as unnecessary and racist.

Officers in Miami and Miami Beach have photographed rappers and their entourages at Miami International Airport and staked out hotels, video shoots and nightclubs while consulting 6-inch-thick dossiers of rappers and associates with arrest records in New York state, The Miami Herald reported.

"We have to keep an eye on these rivalries," said Assistant Miami Beach Police Chief Charles Press. "The last thing we need in this city is violence."

Some experts believe the sweeping surveillance of a genre of musicians is unprecedented.

"There's been no shortage of rock stars and other musicians" scrutinized by police, said Anthony DeCurtis, contributing editor at Rolling Stone magazine. "But there has never been anything like this."

Miami Beach and Miami police did not immediately respond to calls Wednesday for additional comment.

Police began gathering intelligence on rap artists after the Memorial Day 2001 weekend, when 250,000 hip-hop fans flocked to South Beach for four days of parties hosted by their favorite rappers. More than 210 people were arrested, double usual number, most for disorderly conduct and intoxication.

Although no major rap artists were arrested, police decided to learn the nuances of hip-hop culture, Press said.

"Nobody on the beach had a handle on who the players were," Press said. "We didn't know anything. We didn't know who were the big record labels, who were the kingpins. We didn't know why there were rivalries with Ja Rule and Eminem (news - web sites)."

Officers were sent to New York for a three-day training session in May, along with police from Los Angeles, Atlanta and other cities. That's where they received the dossiers, said Miami police Sgt. Rafael Tapanes.

"This kind of conduct shows insensitivity to constitutional limitations," said Nova Southeastern University law professor and constitutional law expert Bruce Rogow. He represented 2 Live Crew when the rap group was prosecuted for obscenity in the early '90s. "It also implicates racial stereotyping."

Only one of 97 officers in supervisory positions at the Miami Beach police department is black. Miami has 226 ranking officers and 26 are black.

"The cities should take taxpayer dollars and put them toward something else," said Luther Campbell, the former 2 Live Crew rapper.

MASTER P SHOWS BOTH SIDES: Good Side/Bad Side, a 3-Disc Set, Coming March 23
Will be released on New No Limit/KOCH Records

Master P
(Mar. 10, 2004) NEW YORK /PRNewswire/ -- Master P is pioneering a new trend in music and film with the release of Good Side/Bad Side, a limited edition 3-disc set featuring 2 CDs of new music from Master P AND a full-length feature film by the same name on DVD.

Due in stores March 23, this project marks the first time an artist has released a CD in conjunction with a straight-to-DVD full-length feature film. The film is executive produced and co-directed by Master P and stars Master P and Lil Romeo.

Shot in and around South Central Los Angeles, the film is a gritty dramedy about a young man (Master P) and his younger brother (Lil' Romeo) struggling to walk a straight path and make the right life decisions despite many negative influences around them. Always a trendsetter, Master P released his first feature film in 1997, the straight-to-video release "I'm Bout It," which he produced, wrote, directed and starred in. The film sold just short of 500,000 copies in its first week of release, more than any other straight-to-video release before it. After the success of "I'm Bout It," Master P starred in, wrote, produced and directed four more films, including the popular "I Got The Hook Up," with its platinum certified soundtrack, and "MP Da Last Don," whose soundtrack was certified 4x platinum.

Good Side/Bad Side, the double disc collection of new music from Master P, was produced by Myke Diesel and features several tracks by Lil' Romeo and P's brother Silkk The Shocker. The new release includes guest appearances by Southern rap newcomers Curren$y, Afficial and Liberty. Highlights on the CD include Master P's collaboration with his brothers C on "Who Them Boyz" and the disc's rowdy first single "Them Jeans," which is already a Southern club classic. Also notable are, "Who Wants Some" and "Act A Fool," two hot tracks featuring and produced by Lil John.

Catch Master P in March on "Mad TV" and the "Late Late Show with Craig Kilborne."

i am so disappointed in her and the CT jail officials for this. clearly, she committed a a crime and should do the time:mad:

Diana Ross Ordered to Serve Jail Time

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Diana Ross was ordered to return to Tucson to serve a two-day jail sentence in her drunken-driving case.
The singer, who pleaded no contest to DUI last month, had arranged to serve her sentence in Greenwich, Conn., where she lives. But during her stay, she left and returned multiple times, said City Court Magistrate T. Jay Cranshaw.

Greenwich Police Chief James Walters originally wrote Cranshaw to say that Ross, 59, had completed her sentence, spending 48 hours in custody over three days, including two overnight stays.
Cranshaw asked for a full accounting of the time spent there, and it turns out Ross spent only 47 hours in police custody.
Arizona law requires DUI defendants to spend at least 24 consecutive hours in custody. Cranshaw said in a written order that the jail arrangement in Greenwich ``clearly does not comply with Arizona law.''
``To avoid questions of impropriety, the defendant is ordered to return to Tucson to serve 48 consecutive hours in the Pima County Jail,'' Cranshaw wrote in a March 4 order.
The original jail order sent to Greenwich didn't state that Ross had to serve 24 consecutive hours behind bars.
Ross, the former lead singer of The Supremes, has been on tour in Europe.
She was arrested Dec. 30, 2002, after someone reported seeing someone driving the wrong way on Tucson's northeast side.
A hearing is scheduled April 1 to schedule her new jail stay.

Beyonce Dances, Flirts With Usher In 'Naughty Girl' Video

For her next video, Beyoncé got the leading man at the top of her wish list. No, it wasn't Jay-Z (been there, done that) who joined her for "Naughty Girl," but Atlanta crooner Usher.

"I'm giving away my secret to you!" Beyoncé exclaimed after revealing the name of her co-star. "I feel like Usher's the Fred Astaire of our times."

Which would help, since Beyoncé says the video, directed by Jake Nava (Spice Girls, Tina Turner), was inspired by the dancing of Astaire and sometime co-star Cyd Charisse. In it, she and Usher use their graceful moves to flirt with each other. "I feel like it was a perfect match, me and him. Not only is he a great dancer and a great personality, he's a great artist," she said.

"Naughty Girl" will be the last single released from her Dangerously in Love, Beyoncé said. Soon after her Ladies First Tour with Alicia Keys and Missy Elliott, she'll return to the studio with Destiny's Child.

Harrison, Prince, Seger Set for Rock Hall
1 hour, 36 minutes ago

NEW YORK - Late Beatle George Harrison (news), Prince, Jackson Browne (news), Bob Seger (news), Traffic, ZZ Top and the Dells will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday night before a black-tie crowd at Manhattan's Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

Prince was set for a particularly busy night, planning a midnight show at a New York club after his induction.

Rolling Stone magazine founder Jann Wenner was to be inducted for lifetime achievement in the nonperformer category. Wenner co-founded Rolling Stone with writer Ralph J. Gleason in 1967.

Harrison, who died of cancer in November 2001, is already in the rock hall as a member of the Beatles. Former bandmates John Lennon (news) and Paul McCartney (news) preceded him for their solo work.

Artists are eligible to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after at least 25 years have passed since their first record was released.

For Seger, the best part of being inducted into the hall is not having to explain why he's not in it. The writer and singer of "Old Time Rock & Roll" and "We've Got Tonight" — which was a hit for Kenny Rogers (news) and Sheena Easton (news) — said it's one of the top questions fans ask him.

Kid Rock will present friend and fellow Michigander Seger at the ceremony.

"I'm going to shoot from the heart, and make this fun for his fans, his friends, his family, his band," Kid Rock told the Detroit Free Press for a Friday story.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm was planning to issue a proclamation naming Monday Bob Seger Day.

VH1 will show a two-hour special on the induction ceremony Sunday

It looks like Britney Spears' Onyx Hotel Tour will be taking a wicked turn in April.

Wicked Wisdom, a band fronted by Jada Pinkett-Smith, will open for all eight of Spears' U.K. shows, beginning on April 27 in London. The group, which formed about a year ago, frequently plays the Los Angeles club circuit. This will be the band's first major tour.

Wicked Wisdom does not yet have an album out, but those who want to check out Pinkett-Smith's vocals can preview some of their music, including video of a live performance, on their Web site. Among the songs available for listening are the angsty, symphonic rock numbers "Taste Your Fruit" and "You Got To" as well as the sassy R&B ballad "Worship Me."

Though Pinkett-Smith is launching a music career, she'll be keeping her day job. The actress will next appear in the action thriller "Collateral" with Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx and Mark Ruffalo, due in August. Pinkett-Smith will play an attorney who's on the hit list of a contract killer played by Cruise.

Title: White Chicks :o

Shawn and Marlon Wayans are doing another movie, directed by their brother Keenan Wayans. It's starring Busy Phillips, and James King..and some other people..They play two white hotel heiresses (Who does that remind you of?)

Premise: After messing up a major drug bust in New York City, two African American FBI agents (who are also brothers), Marcus and Kevin Copeland (Shawn and Marlon Wayans), try to impress their boss by volunteering to protect the Wilton Sisters, Tiffany (Dudek) and Brittany (Ward), the heiresses of a hotel empire, from a kidnapping scheme during a short trip from JFK to the Hamptons. Deciding to change the strategy drastically, the brothers use themselves as bait, wearing lots of pale makeup and dresses to pass as the Wilton sisters, while the real sisters are hidden away, safe from harm. Now, the agents just have to convince the world (including their coworkers who are now protecting *them* and the Wiltons' friends and family) that they're actually young, rich, white heiresses. Shenanigans and misunderstandings surely ensue. (Aytes plays Shaun's girlfriend; Chambers plays Marlon's wife; Munro and Velez play a pair of rival FBI agents.)

Opens June 25th

I Can't Wait For November

Bush Administration Accused of Manufacturing the News

By Mark Sage, PA News, in New York

The Bush Administration is being investigated for producing “ready made” television news packages in which actors were paid to pose as journalists, it emerged today.

“TV news releases” were sent to local stations to be run as part of main news programmes.

But Federal investigators have launched an investigation into whether the adverts were “propaganda”, amid allegations that they were an attempt to “manipulate the press”.

The “news” packages praised a new law, signed by the president in December, which the White House has said will make it easier for elderly American’s to obtain prescribed medicines.

In some of the features, there are pictures of Mr Bush receiving a standing ovation from a crowd as he signed the “Medicare” law.

The packages were produced by the Department of Health and Human Services, but news viewers would have no way of knowing they were watching a Government-produced story, rather than an independent news report.

They have been screened in several states, including Oklahoma and Louisiana.

Two of the videos end with the voice of a woman who says: “In Washington, I’m Karen Ryan reporting.”

The production company, Home Front Communications, said “Karen Ryan” was hired to read a script prepared by the Government.

Scripts were pre-written for news anchors.

In one script the news reader is prompted to say: “In December, President Bush signed into law the first-ever prescription drug benefit for people with Medicare.

“Since then, there have been a lot of questions about how the law will help older Americans and people with disabilities.

“Reporter Karen Ryan helps sort through the details.” “Karen Ryan” then explains the benefits of the new law.

In another video, a pharmacist is shown speaking to an elderly customer.

They agree on camera that the new law is a “good idea” after the pharmacist explains that it “helps you better afford your medications”.

The made-for-TV-news packages are now being investigated by the General Accounting Office – an arm of Congress.

Under law federal money cannot be used for “publicity or propaganda purposes”, unless authorised by Congress.

A spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services, said the use of video news releases was “common”.

“Anyone who has questions about this practice needs to do some research on modern public information tools,” he told the New York Times.

But Democratic Senator Frank Lautenberg called the video packages “disturbing”.

“The distribution of these videos is a covert attempt to manipulate the press,” he said.

And Bill Kovach, chairman of the Committee of Concerned Journalists, told the newspaper that the Government-made “news” items were “the next thing to fraud”.

“It’s running a paid advertisement in the heart of a news program,” he said.

I think it is. The voice is not all that recognizable. Let me see if I can get confirmation.

Soror Star and fiance address his sexual history

From the Chicago Sun-Times.

Reynolds' sexual past just history to Jones

March 16, 2004

BY BILL ZWECKER SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

The whispering about the sexual preferences of ''The View'' co-host Star Jones' fiance, Al Reynolds, has led the couple to address the rumors directly -- though the statement released by Reynolds, a Wall Street banker, may only intensify the gossip.

The couple, who began dating in November, got engaged at the NBA All-Star game on Feb. 15. Ever since they announced their pending nuptials, a lot of New York insiders have been wondering about the duo's relationship -- especially considering Reynolds had a history of dating ... men.

The New York Daily News has rehashed tales of Reynolds sharing a summer house in the gay section of Fire Island and appearing at an all-male Halloween party dressed only in a Speedo swimsuit -- as Bam-Bam from ''The Flintstones.''

Now Jones' spokeswoman has released a statement on behalf of Reynolds:

''My fiancee and I have discussed all relevant parts of our personal histories. We are satisfied that we know everything we need to know about each other's pasts and are looking forward to our future together. We ask that people will respect our love and commitment to each other and refrain from destructive rumor, gossip and innuendo, as we happily plan our marriage and life together as husband and wife.''

Sports fans may be interested to know that Reynolds is the brother of former New York Giants linebacker Ed Reynolds.

BIG PAY DAY: Funnyman Chris Tucker hasn't made a movie in three years, but now the Hollywood trades report the comedian and actor has inked two lucrative deals -- to make a pair of sequels. Tucker could earn as much as $20 million per picture (or 20 percent of the gross box office receipts -- whichever is bigger) to film the sequel to his 1997 hit ''Money Talks" as well as the third installment in Tucker and Jackie Chan's ''Rush Hour'' franchise.

That hefty salary also was Tucker's take for ''Rush Hour 2,'' which marked one of the largest single salary jumps in Hollywood history. The entertainer had been paid less than $2 million for the original ''Rush Hour.''
