I have been an aspiring member for some time now. I have read every apsect of the AKA website and other websites as well. I have also spoken to members of your sorority... If I were blessed to be chosen tomorrow, right at this moment I would have everything that I THINK that I needed.....
I have tried to prepare myself to the best extent possible...... Only time will tell now....... |
I believe that I would be ready if the rush was held within the next twenty four hours. I have community service; my grades are respectable (3.68 gpa); I'm really involved on my campus; I know a few members; the chapter knows that I'm interested; I've attended several of their programs; I've done a lot of research (for the last 3 months)...On the other hand, maybe I wouldn't be completely ready because I'm not quite finished with my letter of interest (in progress) and I don't have my letters of recommendation yet. So, I still have a little to do. On a second note, I think that I could have these two things together within the next twenty four hours if I had to. I apologize for all the ambivalence. I would be ready because, besides my criteria and preparation, I have AKA in my heart and GOD first inmy life.
|
I feel I would be ready technically. I have decent grades 3.7 gpa, I am involved at school, involved in three communities, (home, school and summer school communities) have attended the events faithfully, my interest letter, only needs to be printed out, have met many of the members, recommendation letters are ready, I have done the research. I myself am ready, hair done, business suit laid out. I have Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in my heart, GOD on my side and prayer in my back pocket. But would I be READY? One is never truly ready for the experience of a life time. There would be fear in my stomach until (IF BIG IF) I make it cross those burning sands. And let me reiterate that is A BIG, BIG IF.

No, I wouldn't...
Time is not on my side again this year... My GPA is good (but not to my standard roughly a 3.2) and research-wise MOST DEFINITELY... BUT - I am undergoing some changes educationally, financially, and socially. I am faced with the 99.9999999999997% guarantee of soon changing schools (AGAIN, dang), jobs, and locations again. All for the better, I am just waiting on the offer letter basically. I won't know any of the Ladies when I reach my destination. I have been working on my "headstart" for a few weeks but......... My educational and career opportunities will WAAAAY broaden... If you ask me this question in about 3 months, I can tell you I'd have a different answer.... but now. No. ------------------ "No matter how worthy, admirable or fiercely desired the goal may be, it takes commitment and action to make it a reality." |
I would not be 100% ready only because I just changed schools and not too many ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha know my face. I worked and went to class and that was all I did. However, I did attend events held by the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha, so there would be a possiblity that I could be 95% ready, but that would not be good enough for me. I want them to see Me, all 110%. But on a sad note, the chapter at my school is suspended, but on the positive side, this will give me more time to increase my GPA evenmore, add more community service hours, get my face known to the ladies and attend more events.
|
I'm ready! But the chapter at my school is suspended! (Darn!) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif There are not any members left at my school. But hey, in the mean time I have been working on my weak-average gpa (3.3), volunteering and, getting some international experience. Hopefully, in the future I will have the chance to see how ready I am!

Sisterfriends, Are you ready?
Let's say that the Sorors on your campus are having their rush, mind you, you only have 24 hours to prepare. Do you think that the package of "YOU" will be ready to be presented in 24 hours?
Have you DONE EVERYTHING you SHOULD have done? Have you SAID or not SAID what you SHOULD have or not? Have you TOTALLY researched? Are you ready, to submit YOU in 24 hours? This is totally hypothetical! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif |
Yes, I must say that I am positive I would be ready. Note the screename, ENDROAD. (the train is leaving the station, and I plan to be on board). I have above the required G.P.A., I am fully active in my community on a continuous basis, I have a completed draft of my interest letter printed on pretty paper, All of the members know me at least by face and I know all of them by first name except one. They all know I am interested and I have been fully supportive of there programs for a year and a half. I have fully researched for over three years, I have the outfit a I plan to wear. The only thing would be the money, which I am working this summer to save. So again, yes I am ready, as ready as I will ever be.
|
I won't bore ya with the details, but... YES! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Just a little excited.

One weakness I need to work on: I'm slow, I never get it. For example, <<******Golly on a side not having absoloutely nothing to do with AKA******>> What does that mean? |
Yes, I am ready! The gpa is 3.2, many hours of community service, well written(typed) interest letters, many years of researching, and last but not least Jesus Christ on my side!

I was trying to seperate my comment about my grades from the subject of AKA, thats all!!! |
To answer the qustion, No, I would not be ready. I want to come as "tight" and "correct" as possible (above the required gpa, community service, which I've been doing forever, supporting events, the members knowing me at least on an aquatance (sp?) basis, etc etc), but because I have had to overcome many problems this year (no $$, recovering from being ill for a long time, personal issues, etc.), I feel that I would not be ready to handle such an important committment right now if I was so blessed enough to be chosen (physically and emotionally). Research-wise I know about as much as I should know, but, but I feel you "never stop learning", so I would continue with this and work on myself first before I would even attempt to apply. Most people would probably go on right ahead, becuase I as well as most people know that somethingas big as this you can never be ready for until it occurs. BUT, I am not everybody else! . So, I would pass but I do not want to be "mediocre"--I want to be the best I can be!

I don't really know if I would be ready. Since the chapter of interest is a citywide chapter, I don't exactly know where I stand as far as the members knowing me. As far as my grades, community service and finances go, I believe I'm ready because the $$ part is one of the things I'm working on this summer. I am a lil jealous(not psychotic) because there are no members on my campus so it's hard to get to know people. but as far as my personality, support of their programs and interactions I have had so far, I feel ready...but it's not for me to decide.
P.S. I'd like to email a memberfriend about Letters of recommendation. Please let me know if this is alright and I will email you shortly. |
Yes, Yes, Yes!!!!
I believe that I am ready to present the best OhSoPrettyNikki there has ever been to the Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha. However I know that it is "you" who shall decide who is ready. In the meantime I have boosted my cum GPA to a 3.67 with my 4.0 spring semester ( everybody say "whew!"), recently I have increased my volunteer hours at the local daycare & began community service at my neighborhood church ( although I am not a member), I am currently in posession of 3 letters of recommendation from some of your lovely $oror$, I am using this summer to get as much history in my brain as possible. I do not want to act like I know all there is to know but I definitely want to come correct. I have been in contact with the Basileus of the Graduate chapter in my metro area since the undergraduate metro chapter is inactive & w/o members. She is very gracious and kind. Hopefully I am doing all that is within my power, so ladies if I am slacking on a point please oh please somebody tell a sistah. ------------------ "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful" When da EAST is in da house....Oh my GOD!!!! DANGER! |
I have the outfit I will wear to rush (Lord if I make it to see that day...) I have my letter, the money (saved for over 2 years now no joke!) and most of all patience! I have waited so long for this event to occur, I am also ready for REJECTION if its head peeps out Above the clouds. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif That has been the main thing for me, keeping positive and being objective about my appraoch.
|
Twenty-four hours huh? Let's see, that means 2 hours at the mall to get suit, shoes, and manicure; 4 hours at the beauty shop to get hair done; 2 hours to perfect my letter(printed on pretty paper, last minute changes); 2 hours of "silent time" (prayer, meditation); 6 hours of sleep (if I get that much--will be too charged); 3 hours to get ready (must be perfect); and 5 hours of "miscellaneous"(going over everything to make sure I have everything correct and in order). I hope when the time does come that this is all that I will be worried about--before I even start preparing for rush, my research, recommendations, activities, GPA, etc. will be in order.
|
Am I ready? Good question. I would like to believe that I am, but,as one of my fellow sistafriends said, it is ultimately up to the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated to decide if I am truly ready. My GPA is well above the minimum; my commitment to community service is commendable (alliteration); I have been early to every event since I entered college; The ladies know me; I feel that I have established a reputation of being reliable and competent. I am praying every day that my chance will come soon. Oh, I hope, I hope, I hope....
|
TTT
I brought this one back up also....isn't it cool to see some of the comments from some of the memberfriends who used to be sistafriends on whether or not they were 'ready'?
Honestly, I don't feel that I would be ready in the next 24 hours. I am just getting my GPA GOING where it needs to be, and honestly I don't even want to SUBMIT unless my GPA is at least a 3.8 (my personal standard). On all other aspects, I am about as confident as they come, but as someone else said, I think it was OhsoprettyNikki, I want to come CORRECT! I want to 'up my game' to another level so that I can TRULY be an asset. |
I'm not an AKA interest, but if the organization of my choice was going to have intake tomorrow, I'd be ready. I've finally got my GPA to where it should be, a mile long record of community service, know some financially active members, finances are fine, leadership skills have been sharpened through campus organizations, I've gotten to know most of the chapter, but most of all...I can handle REJECTION. I know that life will go on if it isn't my time, and that's something I'm not sure I could've handled a year ago. The only thing I'd need to do is run out to Family Dollar and pick up some pantyhose.:)
|
OH SO READY
I have been ready for the past six years, but due to being in the Army I have had to move everytime graduate intake rolls around (2 times now). Everytime I move I have to start the process all over again. It helps to have my priorities in order. I have a Masters degree with a 4.0 GPA, actively involved in every church I ever been a member of and I meet members of this illustrious organization on a regular basis. I attend all open events and I know all of the "public" history backwards and forwards. I am confident in the assets I can bring and hopefully one day I will be able to WORK for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
|
I can't say I'm 100% ready, but I've been trying my hardest (about 70% ready). For the past 4 (almost) years, I've been preparing myself. Reading EVERYTHING I could get my eyes to see about ALL aspects of the sorority, talking to my best friend, and some of her ls' (they are all members), striving hard in my academics (although I am a grad interest - my grad GPA has been close to perfect - not taking any chances;) ), working HARD in my community, and trying my hardest to do any and EVERY activity that my interested grad chapter hosts.
With God's help I can get to know more of the members (as well as having them KNOW me), have my finances ABOVE average, and continue to PERFECT my letter (I have written it about 200 times over and over). All in all I leave it in God's hands to tell me when the time is RIGHT for me to blessed with an invitation into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. |

curious
I am not an AKA interest, (though you all are beautiful, classy ladies) but I was wondering if all D9 sororities required interest letters. I have never heard of this before and I'd appreciate if you'd let me know :-)
|
It depends on the org
I would venture to say that it depends on the organization. You would have to look at the Fab Four's websites and go from there. :)
|
I like that Nikki...the Fab Four...:D
But to answer the question, most chapter would like an interest letter, but it depends on the chapter. |
Thank you for your responses :) Have a wonderful, blessed Ressurection Sunday!!
