Change of Heart
Hey sorors did anyone have aspirations to be a Delta etc. and then later change their mind, why? One soror was saying that she wanted to be a Delta like her mother, but when she got to college she was turned off by the type of women and activities in thier chapter and decided to research other sororities and now she's a soror. Any breaks in legacy, let us us hear it http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Sorors, I would like to say that Alpha Kappa Alpha has always been my first and my only choice. My mother is a Zeta, I love her dearly and I support her in her sorority events, but that was not the way I wanted to go. We get along well and she supports me fully on being an AKA. As she told me, go with what is in YOUR heart and what will make YOU happy. This is what she did and I followed the same advice. I would not have it any other way.
|
I never had my sights on any other organization. I wanted AKA or nothing at all. I do have an older half sister and two cousins that are Deltas, a cousin who is a Zeta, and a deceased aunt who was also a Zeta.

I hope you all don't mind, but I felt compelled to reply to this topic. My mother is an AKA and has been since 1976. I was always brought up around AKA's. Like Kat said, I love my mother and her sorors deeply, but I just couldn't find it in my heart to follow in her footsteps. To her it didn't matter as long as I did what was in my heart. I took that advice and began doing research on my own and found what was right for me. She was very supportive in my quest for Delta and even after she is still supportive. Although I am getting flack from her sorors, I still love them anyway!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I think that's what being greek is all about, being able to love and respect one another no matter what organization you are part of. That's just my $19.13 worth. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

I agree everyone goes through that syndrome and congrats to babygirl2000.
Believe it or not Jesus told me where I needed to be. I asked him GOD what sorority should I pledge and He said that only way is AKA. God told me that AKA needed me as a soror. Not only because of the ideas for programs I had but for my leadership abilities. The tail of any line has to be the strongest and had I not pledge the right way, I would have disturbed God's work for AKA. Just a little Gospel Note from a 1908 prospective. Skee-Oop 1Babygirl2000 |
Pinkice9, I can't agree more with you. I think that most people go through a period of uncertainty. I think my biggest dilemma was thinking that I was going to hurt my mother by not following in her footsteps. But she let me know that it was my choice and whatever choice I made I have to live with it, not her. SO I had to look deep with in myself and pray on it before I decided that Delta was/is the right choice for me. I do, to this day, still do all of the activities with the AKA's that I can, but now I think I have broken down a barrier of the AKA's and the Delta's in my area. That's just my $19.13 on the issue.
Pinkice, thanks for the congrats and OOOP-Skee to you and the rest of your sorors!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Greek Love! Quote:

Hello Ladies:
I think that generally, everyone goes through a period of, not necesarrily uncertainty, just trying to see to it that they are making the right decision for them. For those who knew it from jump and never looked back...kudos. My mom is a Delta, as are my aunts (except one, she is a Zeta, she's the baby, she's a REBEL). Both of my high school best friends are AKAs. I love them dearly and when the time came for me to decide I asked my mom. She encouraged me to do what I felt comfortable with. She said she would support me if I wanted to pledge AKA (obviously based on the fact that my friends were). Obviously I chose Delta for reasons that I'm sure we all have chosen our respective sororities. I never had a desire to be anything else...ever. Although a lot of my friends are AKAs and I respect and love them, Delta was and will always be the one for me. 1BabyGirl2000 CONGRATULATIONS, BABY SOROR!!! Oo-oop!!! Ooop-Skee to the Ladies of AKA. I enjoy the topics that are brought up on your page. SISTERLY |

Greetings and much respect to the Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha! And a big ol' "OOOOO-OOOOP" to my Sorors Deltabrat and Babygirl. I hope you ladies don't mind me jumping in to say that I think it's so wonderful that all of US intellegent, sophisticated black women can share in such a loving exchange, regardless of the colors we wear. I can relate to the 'crossroads', when it's time to make a decision on what organization best represents you and your ideals, but I must say that I've had my heart set on Crimson and Cream from day one! However, I've never had anything but respect for AKA's. (My mentor and high school english teacher is an AKA has worn at least one pink and green item every day for the last 20 years!) In the end, were all good old God-fearin' sistas trying to make a difference. So a big ol' OOOOP-SKEE to everyone and please keep up the positive vibe! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I think that what my soror Deltaluv said is something that most greeks forget. Basically what it comes down to is that in the end we are ALL sistas in Christ. PositivelyAKA: Thank you girl, I just call things as I see them! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif OOOOOOOOOOO~OOOOOOOOOOP to my Sorors and OOOOOOOOP-SKEE to all AKA's! I've always had my heart set on my AKA as well. Ironically, most of my older college friends went Zeta and the ones that were my age aspired to be Delta. However, I've always wanted AKA.

First off I'm not greek but very interested in ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA Sorority Incorporated.
How do you ladies (and gents if any visit) feel about people who start pledging one organization (we'll call A), drop, and then decide to pledge another organization (we'll call B). |

ummmm.....that has happened at my school...IN UNDERGRAD...girls were on Zeta in the fall..and tried for AKA the next spring.....needless to say the girls were blackballed from AKA when it came to light..but they crossed in grad chapters of AKA now...GO FIGURE |

Go with what your HEART is in...My Godmother as well as my sister (only sister -- f'89) are Delta's. That's all I knew. When I went to college, I looked at everything -- all organizations. Of course being influenced by Deltas, I thought that would be my ultimate choice. However, that was all changed upon my first step onto the YARD! The ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Innnncorrrporated! Were all that and a bag of chips.
Needless to say...I've been a card carrying member since November 24, 1991....Skkkkkeeeee-weee! And to piggy-back off of what everyone else is saying, it is always wonderful to see young, intelligent, BGLO women interacting...especially w/ all the stereotypes and the like! And I'm extremely proud of the young ones! As a person who used to work with the young BGLO on a campus, I know that some of us still don't get the fact that we are NOT suppose to be 'at' one another! [This message has been edited by Happydaysf91 (edited June 18, 2001).] |
A lot of times I think that tension is imposed from outside- some of my good friends throughout college were Deltas, we were friends before Greek life, and will always be close if I have my way about it! It just so happens that what they wanted was not in my heart, but we are all cool peoples now despite the attempts by some to cause strife!
It is amazing how much folk on a college campus want to start feuds over petty things that don't involve them! If we all weren't the classy ladies that we are I think we'd have had some issues. But there was none of that. |
Okay, this is probably going to be the dumbest post you all have ever heard http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif but when I was in the ninth grad I was introduced to sororities by my Principal and my High School Counselor. One was an AKA and one was a Delta. I had no idea any others even existed. The AKA gave me a little book to read and the Delta gave me "In Search of Sisterhood". Now, you can probably imagine the rest of that part of the story, I thought Delta was the BOMB . Anyway, I also thought red was my favorite color so I will just be a Delta when I go to college. Well, my first semester in college I was paired up with a Sophomore who was on the same kind of scholarship I had. She was aspiring to be an AKA and we talked indepth about how she felt and how I felt. She crossed that next semester and afterwards invited me to hang out with her and her new sisters. I saw that the personalities of the Deltas on my campus were very different from my own. She told me to be honest and decide if the Ladies of Delta Sigma Theta would be the kind of people I wanted to spend time with or hang out. I decided no, and began to research the others. Which led to my interest to become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. I now advise anyone to base their interest not only on the image of the organization as a whole but the caliber of the local chapter because "these" are the people you will be spending a lot of time with. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

First greetings to the Lovely Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha as well as the women of excellence and fortitude http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gifelta Sigma Theta.
I hope that you fine ladies would find in your hearts to allow me to say a few words on the subject. I am a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and most of my friends are Alphas. Where I plegded, Francis Marion University, there was alot of problems in NPHC. I think that it is the result of poor screening on our parts as prophytes that we have selected people that have issues as such that create discord, which none are in this forum today. I am glad that we still have members from various organizations as yourselves! Yours in Eternal Greekdom, Kasm Quote:

i know why the caged bird sings...therefore i will ALWAYS have love for the LADIES of alpha kappa alpha sorority, inc...which was my original choice...but like everything we must evolve to higher planes of knowledge and wisdom...alpha kappa alpha lit the spark of desire in me and for that i will be forever grateful and always have a place in my http://www.plauder-smilies.de/love/pinklove.gif for her...but i soon realized that she is not for me...with all her beauty and grace...we all have to find our own path and if that means you have to stomp through someone elses territory on the way there...so be it... http://www.plauder-smilies.de/person/bandit.gif
