Spam Text Messages

This may turn into a Sprint PCS vent.......

I keep getting spam text messages on my phone! I contacted Sprint via email about this and haven't heard anything back yet.

Does anyone else have or had this problem? If so, how did you get it to stop?

GRRRRRR

Today Star was talking about this, and she was saying how on the "don't call list," it does not cover text messages, so they can message you and you get charged for it.

I have Sprint PCS and I got a text message at about 3am last night (woke me out of dead sleep) from itzvk55kh@netzero.net that says "Want a supermodel figure? Lose 3 sizes without exercising! Call 800-xxx...". Just as I was falling back asleep, my boyfriend's Sprint phone starts beeping from a text message alert. How are these spammers getting our numbers? I never give out my cell number to businesses. I've thought about texting the guy back at 4am with some nasty words but I decided not to. I listed his email address here in case anyone else wants to. :)

Can't believe that someone posted about this...I have a Sprint PCS phone and I got a spam text message yesterday! I can count on both hands how many people have my cell phone number, so how did they get it?

So far, its only been one text message, but if I start getting barraged by them...Sprint is going to get a nasty phone call! They're already tap-dancing on my last nerve for other offenses.

They're probably like the auto dial things that normal telemarkerters have. They dial a lot of random numbers until someone (thing) answers.

Rudey 03-03-2004 01:52 PM

I don't see how anyone would stop it until they're able to stop email spam. In fact I've sent over 1000 messages to a friends phone with a click of a button.

it is the biggest pain. I've received two of them already... and two minutes later my co worker got the same message. To be honest, I didn't even know i could received text messages! If I get charged for this I"m going to have a shit fit.

adpialumcsuc 03-03-2004 05:32 PM

My boss gets a ton of them. She was in a meeting today for about 3 hours and when she got out she had 22 text messages and all were spam. She does have Sprint and has called them and complained many times. They have done nothing about it.

Luckily I haven't been receiving any.

AllUnderstood 03-03-2004 06:06 PM

yeah my friend is getting these a lot too....he gets sooo mad every time it happens....hahaha....but hopefully they'll do something about that soon.

dgfromtx 03-03-2004 06:20 PM

odd. yeah im about to throw my phone out the window

krazy 03-03-2004 06:28 PM

OMG, I have gotten three so far this week... I HATE text messages... Here is why... It takes like an hour to put in my code to bring it up, see it, erase it, and I am sure I get charged for it... These people have their own ring of the inferno...

thetalady 03-03-2004 07:59 PM

Do all of you getting these spam messages have Sprint phone service?? Just wondering if that is the common thread. If so, then the spammers have to be getting the numbers from Sprint somehow

justamom 03-03-2004 08:08 PM

 Oh My Gosh! I have SPRINT and got one of these TOO!!!!

Glad I'm not the only one...MAD they are trying to make extra money from a list I THOUGHT was not to be used for any other reason or business.

justamom 03-03-2004 08:15 PM

Maybe if we inundate them with e-mail....

I got the spam message on my Sprint phone as well (I think mine had a different e-mail address listed, but I can't remember it).

It's really ironic because the only time I usually get a text message is when my phone service has been turned off....my friends can't text message me so I find it so odd that spammers can...

I ported my number from Sprint to Cingular. Strangely, I didn't get a spam message. A friend of mine on Sprint did though.

My guess is that they're using the sprint website. You can send a sprint phone a text message by using a regular email client and sending the message to yournumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com.

My guess is that they're just emailing every possible number Sprint could have. The great thing for them is that they really didn't even have to do anything differently within their spam programs.

Give me any number on any carrier and I will drop 1000 text messages into your phone in a couple seconds.

The carrier can't prevent it.

I didn't start getting text messages on my phone until after I signed up to do mobile AIM on my phone...i'm thinking that might of been where they got my number?

hottytoddy 03-04-2004 10:41 AM

I will kill someone if I start getting these. Look out.

Like I said, it wouldn't take much to send a text message to every single Sprint PCS phone. You just have to send a message to every every10digitnumberpossible@messaging.sprintpcs.com.

Spam software has no problem with stuff like that.

greeklawgirl 03-04-2004 05:38 PM

I got another one of these messages yesterday. If Sprint thinks that they're going to slap me with an extra charge for this, they've got another thing coming!

Honeykiss1974 03-04-2004 06:12 PM

I still have yet to hear from Sprint concerning this!

I better not see a PENNY extra on my bill.

Yep, I hope that AT&T doesnt end up with that too....I already have too many of my own text messages, I don't need spam ones also! I hated sprint when I had that service, and they NEVER do anything about complaints.

Too late AT&T customers get a lot of spam text messaging too. I'm on AT&T and i have to say my amount of spam seems to be getting worse. some days I can get up to 20 spam in a day on my phone. It's on all carriers now. At least none of us in the US have to pay for incoming text messages (at least I don't think they do). In Japan they have to pay per message received. There have been some articles on CNN website about spam text in Japan and what people are having to pay - some people get 100 messages a day

Yup. It's a pain.

I use a sports score reporting service from MSN to report scores of Oklahoma University football games. Their program screwed up and started sending me message after message.

I called customer service and found out they had around 500 messages waiting for me. They are actually able to go in and clear out the queue but that does require a call to customer service.

I have yet to receive spam on my Cingular. I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

You may get better response if you actually call them.
