Cunilinguists?

I wanted to see how many languages all our Gc'ers speak? surely we have some linguists among us?

PhiPsiRuss 03-01-2004 02:17 PM

I thought this thread was about insightful people. You know, "cunning linguists."

Anyway, I just speak English.

Rudey 03-01-2004 02:19 PM

6 languages - 2 not as well as the other 4.

Only English, I'm ashamed to admit. I really wish I was fluent in French and Italian. I can pretend I'm fluent in French, as long as I know the topic before hand and am not asked to speak much.

And I thought of something dirty when I saw the topic name too.

English and I was fluent in Polish when I was a little kid but now I only remember a couple of prayers and some great cuss words.

That and the Alec Baldwin's "Sweatty Balls" NPR skit on SNL are some of the funniest episodes.

My Spanish has weakened due to lack of use.

kstar 03-01-2004 03:14 PM

sugar and spice 03-01-2004 06:00 PM

English, Spanish and Italian.

Spanish and Italian are so similar, though, that I'm always mixing them up.

Rudey 03-01-2004 06:01 PM

Also, I speak the international language of love.

ThetaPrincess24 03-01-2004 07:04 PM

3 but working on #4...if you're gonna count computer languages I'd be up around 10-15.

AlphaSigOU 03-01-2004 08:26 PM

Fluent in Spanish (the Venezuelan dialect).
Understand French, Italian and Portuguese (I can get the gist of a conversation or a brief passage in a book or magazine.)
Speak, read and understand enough German to start a barroom brawl, and just enough Russian to bring back the Cold War. :)

Does anyone know ASL (American Sign Language)? I've been wanting to pick that up, as well as some Spanish, because I come across those a lot in the school system. The only languages I speak now are English and French.

I know BSL (Brooklyn Sign Language.) Its easy to learn because it only involves the use of the middle finger.

tinydancer 03-02-2004 02:01 AM

English and "Franish" - a terrible mixture of French and Spanish, which thoroughly confuses the little Hispanic children I work with.;)

ADqtPiMel 03-02-2004 02:15 AM

English, obviously...and French is my minor :)

Ideal08 03-02-2004 08:21 AM

English of course and fluent in Spanish.

moe.ron 03-02-2004 08:34 AM

Trying to learn French and Korean. Korean is going much better then French.

Optimist Prime 03-02-2004 01:53 PM

German and fluent in English

_Opi_ 03-02-2004 04:08 PM

well lemme see..I can speak 2 fluently. I learned 3 other languages in classes. Out of the 3, I can understand but not speak 1, I can read the other 2 and know the basic words and conjugations(?sp). I plan on learning 2 more languages fluently.

You can teach yourself somewhat, with a good book AND a video - but I'd recommend taking some sort of class, or find a tutor. Although ASL is somewhat based on English, the grammar is quite different, and can be confusing.

I've learned a blend of ASL/SEE (Signed Exact English) sign language from my wife - "true" ASL as taught in school isn't necessarily what "deaf" people use to communicate - there are blends of the different sign languages available.
