Pack Rats

I searched and couldn't find a similar thread so I started a new one.

Spring cleaning came early for me this year. My room was so messy that I decided it was time to clean. But I didn't just tidy. I'm doing a massive clean. So far it has been a 3 day job. Just on my room!!

I am probably the worlds biggest pack rat. I have thrown away at least 6 bags of garbage. Just of things that I haven't used in a while and things that I didn't even know I had. I still had papers and notes from elementary school.

I hate throwing things away but I know I should. Who else here is a pack rat?

Jill1228 02-29-2004 05:04 PM

Ahem....

Guilty as charged! :D

tnxbutterfly 02-29-2004 05:46 PM

:o I am:o

I'm doing a massive cleaning today of my apartment. I'm moving at the end of March and my complex has to do a walk thru beforehand.

Well before they do that, I have to clean, clean, clean. Wish me luck

Oh, I am - and it is one thing that I just HATE about myself. I have way too much "stuff." That's probably one reason that I lose everything I lay my hands on!:p

Kevin 02-29-2004 07:24 PM

Yup.

We were noticing recently how many people are building additions onto their houses, rather than moving, and I said, "It's because we all have too much STUFF!! The thought of trying to tame it all in enough time to move is just too overwhelming, so people add on instead!"

Oh, yeah - I need an addition.

I am a super pack rat. I go through my stuff every spring, I just threw out 4 bags of old papers, numbers, my tennis shoes from three years ago :D

Tom Earp 02-29-2004 07:57 PM

How can you get rid of treasures?????

I know I need to throw stuff away, but?:(

Damn would I have a lot of room! But, they are my treasures!:D

I DO NOT HAVE JUNK!:)

Any 78 Record collectors and ah other stuff!:(

I am a giant pack rat. My father is too (and to a lesser extent, so was my mother) so it runs in the family.

Rudey 02-29-2004 08:19 PM

I collect panties from every girl I sleep with. Then I sell them on ebay.

--So far I have none.

I'm not a pack rat but my mother is. She saves every margarine container, glass jar, magazine.. the list goes on and on. I dread when I have to clean out her condo someday. I'll need a bulldozer and a trash dumpster!

I go through every closet and drawer at least once a year and get rid of anything that I haven't used in a year, unless it has significant meaning to me. I do the same with my kids' rooms. I hate clutter!

I'm a huge packrat! I'm slowly getting better but I have so much stuff in my room at my parents' house that is unneccesary.

Sister Havana 02-29-2004 09:44 PM

I'm a major packrat, and that might be understating it. :D

DigitalAngel126 03-01-2004 12:43 AM

Oh man...I have so much stuff!!!! It sucks sometimes because I just don't know what to get rid of, yet I KNOW there's no point in keeping half of this isht!!! Ugh!

dakareng 03-01-2004 01:41 AM

I'm a major packrat but I say that I come by it genetically-- so are my parents. It was soooooooo much fun (not) preparing their house for an estate sale when they downsized to a retirement community. My mother had every cancelled check she'd ever written (and they'd been in that house 35 years), every sewing pattern she'd ever bought (including her wedding dresss and our baptismal gowns). Nostalgia is one thing-- my nieces enjoyed finding authentic vintage 70s clothing (that goodwill donation that never happened) but it bordered on ridiculous!

I'm a pack rat! I recently started trying to do the FlyLady.com stuff, and have trashed a ton of stuff over the past few months. One of the things I had was a copy of a detailed intake report I did on one of my juvenile's years ago. I figured I would never need it again, and in the trash it went...now I'm applying for a contractual position with the state interviewing prisoners in jail - basically the same thing I did as a Court Counselor, and the employer wants a copy of one of my old intake reports! Uhhh, I just threw that away after hanging onto it for 8 years! Just my luck!
I'm never throwing anything away again!

helpful suggestion

if you dont want to be a pack rat anymore, i so have the perfect thing for you ...

1) every so ofetn walk into whatever room you need to clean out

2) throw everything in the middle (except breakables and anything that you could use at that time) and nothing heavy that you cant lift, ex furniture.

3)pick a spot and start clearing out the pile from that spot until it is all gone

4)throw out everything except stuff that can help you brag, get smarter, get laid, or seem more appealing to the opposite sex (everythins else can go.

note: you dont need to throw out pictures of hot exes cause you can still brag to new friends about that, but you do need to throw out those little things that seemed to be a good idea at the time to buy

5)repeat this process for as many different rooms and as often as needed. this will make it so that you can still be a packrat at hear, and you dont have to live like a slob

so, i should tell you that this is the theorie that i clean my house with, and that i dont consider myself as a packrat anymore

later,

I too am a pack rat... I just cleaned a while ago and found notebooks from high school and all kinds of stuff I don't really need... I keep *everything* Phi Sig I've ever gotten... it's bad... my apartment can't hold everything... I just feel bad throwing stuff away even if I don't use it if someone could... I think I need to make a large good will donation

Another pack rat here. It runs in the family.

My husband is a thrower. He doesn't understand :p

OtterXO 03-01-2004 08:02 PM

Interestingly enough I am a former pack rat-I never thought it could happen! I guess moving a lot helps with the transformation. I still definitely have a lot of crap that I don't need, but I've gotten better at getting rid of clothes and shoes that I will never wear again (unless tapered leg jeans are coming back in style soon!). There should be support groups for pack-rats, Pack Rats Anonymous anyone?

I AM A PACK RAT!

Heck only 5 years ago I threw out my HS pon pons! Now I have all the kid's drawings, tests, special clothes...
I am drowning in photos!
I keep working at it though. "Clean Sweep" has inspired me!
Hubby is worse than me in many ways.

Lets all have one huge GC garage sale!

Are they pom poms or pon pons? I'm serious. I need to know.

Are you serious or am I going to look ridiculous the next time I say "Nice pom pons" to a cheerleader?

Here are a few projects using the Pom Pon Maker:
Golf Club Covers
Easter Chick

I think it's become one of those things that is correct no matter what you say-because cheerleaders understand!
;)

Are we talking about the things cheerleaders wave in the air or is this something else? I am just so confused by this.

Rudey,
The cool  cheerleaders don't say "Pom pons" anymore. It's just "pom".
As in "Wow, you are awesome with your poms!"
"Lets do the pom routine!"
