Video rental suggestions...

I rented movies last night to take to work today...

The kids have their exams this week and I don't have to give ANY exams/NOR do I see any students...
So I purchased 3 videos to pass the time:

2 of them are a MUST for EVERYONE! And I mean everyone!

***TROIS***
This has Kenya Moore and the guy from Different World with the dreads and he was in the Janet video "Again"....THIS ONE IS A MUST RENT! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif

***UNINVITED GUEST***
Mekheil? Pfifer, Mel Jackson, and the girl "Amber" from "In the House" tv show is in it, also...YOU MUST RENT THIS, TOO!

Bobby Earl 01-10-2001 07:49 PM

I rent movies alot. I noticed TROIS and even though the plot was VERRRRRY enticing to me, I didn't know if I wanted to rent it. I will definitely rent it now. I prefer those Mafia joints though. Godfather series, The Sopranos, Goodfellas, etc... you know what I mean.

Anyway,
Thanks for the recommendations...

AKA2D '91 01-10-2001 09:46 PM

I really wanted to get feedback from others...what rentals would you all suggest?

exquizit 01-10-2001 09:47 PM

Trois was very good! It tripped me out how things turned out. I also recommend "Love and Basketball", "Final Destination", "The Patriot", and "Gladiator" All of these kept me interested from beginning to end. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Conskeeted19 01-10-2001 11:19 PM

This is an old movie, but "A Long Kiss Goodnight" was so good. Has anyone seen shaft? If so, was it good or bad?

AKA2D '91 01-10-2001 11:21 PM

Soror,
Shaft was good! Busta Rhymes was a trip!

tickledpink 01-11-2001 01:41 AM

Soror, I still like "X-Men" if you're looking for something that every one can watch. For adults, I like "End of Days" and I don't know if it's on video, but Showtime's airing it like crazy so it might be -- "In Too Deep" with Omar Epps and LL.

**BTW**One never to rent (especially for the fellas) "The Crying Game". I'd never seen it before, but when they got to that part (of course I knew, but I didn't expect it) I was like *WHOA!!* I felt about like he did (those who saw it will know what I mean).

Uninvited Guest was filmed in Bexley, Ohio, a VERY AFFLUENT inner-city suburb of Columbus, my hometown!!!

Catwoman 01-11-2001 10:25 AM

This past weekend my husband and I rented....
"Rules of Engagement" w/ Samuel Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones...was ok.
"The Art of War" w/ Wesley Snipes...was pretty good.

Would also recommend:
Love & Basketball
Gladiator
Final Destination

Miss. Mocha 01-11-2001 12:20 PM

AKA2D,
are you for real on that UNIVITED GUEST tip?

This is a true story, for girls night out, we went to the show (midwestern term for movie theatre) to see UNIVITED GUEST, about 10 minutes into the movie, we demanded a refund.

The manager was like, "What movie were you seeing.... UNIVITED GUEST?" We all nodded. Our money was refunded ASAP, and we were told by the usher that people had been demanding refunds from that movie since it had opened.

Now maybe I didn't stay long enough to get to the good part, we left after Mari Morrow hurt her ankle, and she was in the kitchen with Mekhi, and he was .....

If you say it got better, then maybe I'll give it another chance.

Did it get better?

Ok, for those in love, soon to be in love, or want to remember how love was when you had it, "Wuthering Heights" the orginal version with Sir Lawrence Olivie and Merle Oberon. My favorite movie of all time.

also "Imitations of life."

Love and Basketball is great too. Shawshank Redemption was a great movie. X-men. Shaft was good. But if you have never seen it, rent Superfly. Also "Scary Movie" was funny.

One Movie for ALL of you

"ROAD TRIP"

My words are short

AKA2D '91 01-11-2001 04:33 PM

Girl, YES! It got better! WAY BETTER!

That's why you RENT! Girl, that movie took so many turns... it was a trip. It may have been low budget, (lol) but it is a good treat to rent.

My colleagues and I were like dayyyyyuuuummmm! (one said, that he did not ordinarily watch tv, movies, etc. he said it had to be good, because he WATCHED the entire movie) Girl, you gotta rent it! We were still talking about it yesterday!

AKA2D '91 01-11-2001 04:36 PM

I have seen alot of the movies that you all have mentioned...

I could not get into X-Men...

Love&B-ball was GREAT!
Final Destination left me HANGING, there should be a part 2...

I LOVE IMITATION OF LIFE...A CLASSIC!

Re: Final Destination

YOU LIKED THAT BULLDROP???!! WHAT IN HEAVEN'S NAME.....
I saw the flick at the theatres and was disappointed. Now I love disaster flicks, but that one let me down. The only good part was when ol' girl got hit by the bus. Now THAT made my heart jump. My lil' brother (19 years old) was cracking up at that scene. But I thought it was LOEHME! (pronounced lame). As far as the flick leaving you hanging, you should be hung for liking that mess http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif *LOL*

Love and Basketball--while I hate basketball, the movie kept my attention. 'Nuff said.

PrincessELG 01-15-2001 04:46 PM

I have to agree with a couple of these:

Roadtrip was so stupid it had to be funny.

Art of War was entertaining and had a lot of good twists.

Gladiator was great I could watch it pver and over again. (I love those types of movies)

Final Destination was off the hook the deaths were so gruesome but it was a little predictable. The girl getting hit by the bus was great. We had to rewind that like 3 times.

Was Trois really good my sister said it was horrible, she said she turned it off.

THAT TRAIN SCENE WAS A TRIP, TOO!

IT WAS A LOW-BUDGET MOVIE...NO OSACR NODS HERE, BUT YOU HAVE TO SEE THE ENTIRE THING!

...TURN IT OFF AT THE END OF THE MOVIE...LOL! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

There are some unexpected twists and turns, that's what I liked about it... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

Ideal08 06-07-2001 09:45 AM

I had to pull this up. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Ok, the one movie that has gotten a REALLY bad rap that I think was really good was Fight Club. That movies has some surprises in it for real. I liked it.

But my purpose for bringing up this thread. Can we talk about Bamboozled? Who saw it? What did you think? I think that this is Spike's best movie so far (AKA2D, I'ma rent Crooklyn, though, lol). The movie was very eye-opening and in your face. Much more so than Do the Right Thing. So, what did yall think of it? It reminded me a little of that HBO movie, Dancing in September. I just really enjoyed the movie. Everything fit together so perfectly. I would like to meet Spike and just sit and discuss some stuff.

When I saw this resurface, I too, was going to suggest the movie, Bamboozled. I truly believed that this was one of Spike's better movies. It really made an excellent point about Black media, Black actors, and those behind the scenes (both Black and white). I also liked the underlying discussion of the inner turmoil of the African in America trying to succeed in two worlds (Damon Wayans' character)...kind of hitting on some of DuBois' discussion of the duality of the Negro. It was definitely an excellent movie with a good cast. It will beg you to question your very thoughts about the kind of diverse society Hollywood believes should exist and that of reality. Before I give away too much...let me end there, and simply suggest that it's truly worth the $4+ dollars from Blockbuster to rent it.

Best word to describe the movie: Profound!

Oh Drama! 06-07-2001 10:01 AM

Oh I agree with you Ideal08! FIGHT CLUB FIGHT CLUB FIGHT CLUB! Man I loved that movie! I thought it was about a bunch of guys bored with life and fighting. IT'S NOT! So good I purchased the DVD!

I also love Fargo, the Usual Suspects, Spanish Prisoner (with Steve Martin on the serious tip), the Matrix (Aaliyah betta not stink up Matrix Part II like she STUNK UP Romeo Must Die).

AKA2D '91 06-07-2001 10:01 AM

1. Traffic
2. What Lies Beneath

What Women Want was really good!!

Fight Club has Edward Norton and Brad Pitt. It's about these dudes getting together fighting, on the surface, but there's a deeper plot, and it's actually interesting. It's like he's trying to get people to realize the real meaning of life, but it's a trip how he does it. You have to see it. The movie is DEFINITELY a little different, but it is good. I like weird movies, though.

Oh, another good one to rent would be Go. It's one of those same-plot, multiple-character-views type movie.

neal 06-08-2001 06:26 PM

Finding Forrester -- with Sean Connery is very good as well... Busta Rhymes has a part in this movie and he is turning out to be a great actor

The dumbest movie that I rented recently was 'Meet the Parents' with Robert Deniro...that was a waste of time.

exquizit 06-09-2001 01:28 PM

I just got a kick out of Mrs Congeniality. It was too funny. I also enjoyed Bounce.

I am sitting over here CTFU. I was like, dang, why y'all need to talk about me??? Then I figured it out.... Still LMAO.

But back to the point of the thread. I can't wait to see FD2. The first one had a sista worried. I saw it the night before I was leaving to take a flight to Europe (just like they were), so y'all know I was looking for all the signs.

The Matrix II...and other movies

I heard that they took Aaliyah's scenes out of the matrix two and redid them with another actress that looks similar to her, because she was unable to finish the movie. That is why it took longer for it to come out.

As far as rentals....I know I will catch flack for this one, but I like to rent "The Wiz" with Michael Jackson and Diana Ross and nem. I also like to watch "There's Something About Mary", and "Shallow Hal". I think that those two are hilarious. Now if I am feeling the black movies a bit more then I go with.."Soul Food", "The Best Man", "The Wood", "Love and Basketball", and "Brown Sugar". I always keep a copy of "Friday" and "Don't Be a Menace..." near by because you can never go wrong with those. :D

This is true. Lawrence Fishburne was on 106 & Park last night and said that she had only started filming before her death. Since there was not enought footage, they had to go with another actress. The actress is Nona Gaye, daughter of Marvin. She was last in Ali.

The Matrix II will be released in mid-May and the Matrix III will be released in November.

I read a newspaper article that said that 2003 is the year of the sequel. Here are just a few besides the Matrices:

Legally Blonde 2
Charlie's Angels 2
American Wedding (American Pie 3)
Bad Boys 2

and a gang of others.

Trois 2

Hello Sorors (I haven't posted but 3 times, but I posted in the new soror thread)!

Soror AKA2D, I believe you mentioned in the first post some time ago that you rented Trois. Well now there is a Trois 2 : Pandora's Box and it is GOOD! Tyson Beckford is in it as well as the two girls from the Player's Club (I don't know their real names, but one played Diamond's cousin Ebony and the other played the girl that Diamond beat down at the end of the movie....Ronie I think.) The guy that plays Neal on Young and the Restless (Christof St. John?) is also in it. Anyway, I rented it the other week and it kept my attention the WHOLE time!!!

Maybe it had a different effect on video than in the theatre....

It's Jim and Michelle that are getting married. Not all of the original cast is returning.

And this one time at band camp . . .

*SIGH*

I went to see Final Destination 2 last night and I was sooooo disappointed. The story line was just too unbelievable and there were way too many things that weren't explained. And talk about gratuitous violence... just ridiculous. Remember how the first movie had scenes that caught you totally off guard and just tripped you out? Man, this movie tried so hard to recapture those effects that you could see them coming a mile away. It just didn't work. And T.C. Carson (Kyle from Living Single) just makes my skin crawl. I heard a lot of the younger kids coming out of the theater talking about how great the movie was, so maybe I'm just getting too old for these kind of movies.

feu_declipse 02-02-2003 01:35 PM

Final Destination 2 actually scared me. I don't scare easily but I guess I just wasn't expecting the deaths to be so gruesome, so that got me. For 10-20 mins though I was looking up hoping nothing dropped on me but I was fine after that because it was quite unrealistic. So I do not know if I would say it was good or bad. If you like scary movies, then I would say watch it, if gore is not your thing, then stay away. The effects were more serious than the plot

AGREED!

I didn't DISLIKE it. The crowd in my theatre was really rowdy and when anyone died, the more gruesome the death, the louder they cheered. I dunno, man, lol.

FD1 was scary and it made you question your own mortality. This one is just another teen slasher (or whatever, since there isn't a "slasher" per se, lol).

GO SEE CHICAGO IF YOU WANT A MOVIE!!!!

AKA2D '91 02-07-2003 10:22 PM

I did rent Sweet Home Alabama.

I lovedddddddd this movie. It was really funny.

For the Alabamaians, do "they" still re-enact the Civil War like that?

:D :D :D CHICAGO was a very good movie. I was a bit surprised I would like it, with all the doggone sanging!!!

But the #1 for 2002 is still Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers!!!
(ok so I'm a nerd :D )

beauty_6049 02-10-2003 04:28 PM

A must rent is Barber Shop if you did not see it! I actually liked "O" with Mehki Pfeifer and Julia Stiles. It kept my attention from beginning to end. If you want to go "old skool", you may want to re live Coming to America and Harlem Nites! I forgot how funny both movies were:)
