Handbag Help! No Boys Allowed!

Well, boys are allowed but I don't think most of them would be interested in this thread! :)

Ladies (especially ladies who are more "with it" fashionwise than I am), I saw a handbag at Nordstrom today that I really like and am considering buying it.

http://coach.com/shop/product_nobefr...e=&easyask_id=

The only problem is that I see LOTS of knock-offs of the Coach signature handbags. All these folks wandering around carrying bags with "G"s on them instead of the "C"s. Do y'all think it's been knocked off to the point that it's too common looking?

I hate to say it, but I don't want to spend a couple hundred dollars on a bag and have people think it's a fake. Yes, I'm a snob! lol But can you help me anyway? :D

Steeltrap 02-23-2004 09:08 PM

I will try...

But have you thought of getting a Signature in a color? They have pink and have had green in the past. The hot pink Signatures that I've seen this season are gorgeous, have a lot of suede in them, although they are more expensive.

And yes, I've seen "Goaches" out and about. But I don't think the new collection is going to be knocked off that much.

SigKapBling 02-23-2004 09:28 PM

hey hey ladies ....

i dont believe that the bags with the G's are fake. i think they are gucci ones... i could be wrong, but i live out here in vegas, and you always see the ones with the crazy G's all over them under gucci labels in the stores ... soooo .. but im sure that there are some knockoffs.

and i think you should get that signature coach bag ... i have a coach bag, the one that looks exactly like the one you want, but its completely black leather, no C's. i LOVE my bag. it goes everywhere and anywhere with me :)

its a fabulous investment!!!!

the gucci ones have tiny g's. the coach knockoffs are big noticeable strange-looking g's. it is very noticeable that they are a coach knockoff.

KR, i love the bag in the link you posted, especially since it has light pink in it! my feeling is if you love it, then i wouldn't worry about if there are knockoffs out there. i have a few of the signature bags and i don't care about the knockoffs. i know mine are real! ;) plus coach bags are great and they will last. i think it's worth the investment.

Steeltrap 02-23-2004 09:34 PM

Here's an example of what I call a "Goach"

^^
This is an example of what I've referred to...

SigKapBling 02-23-2004 09:45 PM

oooooh those things.

i understand now, sorry ladies!!

i still think you should get the signature bag though, like mu_age said .... who cares what others think, you KNOW its real

OtterXO 02-23-2004 10:11 PM

You know something funny, those silly faux coach bags with the Gs instead of Cs are now being made by Guess in a similar pattern. Poor girls who buy them-they look like bad coach knockoffs!!!

hottytoddy 02-23-2004 10:16 PM

I HATE THOSE. I don't really care for the signature bags anyway.

First of all there are too many fake ones.

Second of all I jus think they're a little "Hey look at me I have a Coach bag"

Third of all too many people have them.

And for people who do have them...I also hate it when people overdo it with the signature anything (Coach, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Burberry) Like the purse, the scarf, the hat, the shoes. Please don't do this. Too much.

AXJules 02-23-2004 10:25 PM

Love love LOVE this new signature Coaches in neon pink w/suede. Too fucking cute.

**snob alert**
Girl I completely understand your fear of people assuming you're carrying a fake, but think of it this way....anyone who knows their stuff about designer purses will be able to tell from a mile away that yours ISN'T fake. The people that judge you are the ones who buy awful awful knockoffs out of someone's Radio Flyer wagon next to the bagel stand. Who's approval would you rather have??

SigKapBling 02-23-2004 10:32 PM

i agree 200% with you Jules!

i think every woman should own some sort of designer bag, i never thought this until i got my coach, and i love it to death .. loooove it :D

hottytoddy 02-23-2004 10:33 PM

Not looking for approval. I really just don't like the signature Coach stuff....never have. Call me a snob, but I just don't care for them...I have a few Coach bags, but no sig ones.

xok85xo 02-23-2004 10:40 PM

call me a snob but i don't care for most coach bags :)

i love burberry novacheck, but i agree - there is such a thing as overdoing it. i have the large flowerpot tote, and the flipflops, and i really want a cashmere scarf, but its too much..maybe if i get a new winter bag (at this point its too late for a new scarf anyway) but theres definately such a thing as designer overkill..

i am still drooling over the prada bags i posted in the other handbag thread..

and ditto to what jules said - anyone who has the real thing can spot a fake from a mile away..anyone who knows anything will know your bag isn't a fake, and why do you care what the people who think its fake think anyway? clearly they don't know anything :)

Yeah I am kinda over the whole Coach craze. I like some of the bags, but there are bags I like better. I am the sameway with the burberry....I have a scarf and a hat...but I would NEVER wear them together. I have a sig Dior scarf as well....but I wear it with something plain. Designer Overkill---that's the perfect description!!

well the way you feel about burberry is the way i, as well as others, feel about coach. personally, i don't care for burberry but i love all of my coach items.

alikat2 02-23-2004 11:38 PM

I'm with the others.....go for the sig if you like it. You'll know it's real.

rainbowbrightCS 02-23-2004 11:50 PM

I just can bring my self to pay 200 for a purse. I feel bad about $50 for a Vera Bradley.

Honeykiss1974 02-24-2004 12:53 AM

I sometimes carry my AUTHENTIC Fendi Mama Zucca bag (brown with the big F's) . Thankfully, there are no Fendi stores within 4 states on all sides though.

KR, I like you bag and I haven't seen that many knockoffs in that color or style. I say BUY IT!!!:D  :D

Rudey 02-24-2004 12:58 AM

Don't buy it. They don't know any better. Buy some cool jeans instead.

-Rudey

KappaTarzan 02-24-2004 01:36 AM

hehe i think that those fake coach bags look like olives :) i have alot of coach, and i love it. i dont' really like kate spade.. i love burberry though. :)

i'm picky..

tunatartare 02-24-2004 02:44 AM

I'm a big Coach fan, and I definitely say go for the bag. It's so adorable and I really doubt you're gonna find knockoffs in that style. For lack of sounding like a snob, I have to say that with fake bags, you can tell that they're fake from like a mile away, so you really shouldn't have to worry at all about people thinking that it's fake.

AMEN!!!!!! I just bought my mom a Sig. Coach and she knew nothing of the Coach line - just b/c she doesn't pay that much attention. But now, even she will say "is that fake?". I hate fake Coach purses. Especially when you're in Victoria's Secret and a girl compliments you on your bag and then says "I just got mine" and it has big ol' G's on it. Don't tell me your purse is Coach with G's on it!

GeoffZ 02-24-2004 03:01 AM

Ok, I know you don't want a Boy's opinion, so disregard this if you want, lol. I think you should get the bag if you love it and it makes you happy. However, in my humble opinion, the C bags are played out. Everyone and there Mama has one or a cheap knockoff. I say get a "classic" looking Coach that will still be fashionable years from now (ie. something from the Hamptons collection). But, like I said, if you love it don't pay attention to what others say. And, like someone else said those in the know will be able to see yours isn't fake. By the way, one of my best friends has an extensive Coach collection, so I'm not just making this up. ;)

Hootie 02-24-2004 03:38 AM

I guess I don't follow purses all that much to know the difference, but I will say this...I see a lot of "designer" purses and if the gal that carries it isn't looking ultra classy, I assume it's fake. I know that sounds shallow, but we're talking about $200+ purses. If you OWN the real deal, at least dress like it :p ;)
In the mean time, I'll still dress classy and strut with my fake Gucci I got at a purse party. Everyone compliments me on it, and I don't let them believe anything but what they want....sorta like the fake jewelry I'll wear sometimes ;)

hey now...thats not always true amyp. on sundays when i run my errands/go grocery shopping in warmups/scrubby clothes i carry my burberry, and i can assure you its real. just because you aren't always dressed to impress doesn't mean your bag is fake..sometimes this is true, but not always :)

AchtungBaby80 02-24-2004 09:13 AM

Just about every girl in the middle school where I teach a lot has either a fake Coach or a fake Louis. You can sort of tell, though...I mean, they're 13-year-olds, for crying out loud, and I don't really know of any parents in my town who would buy their kid a designer purse (this is a small, sort of redneck place). I think if you want that purse, buy it! You'll know it's real, and besides, wouldn't more people be apt to think your purse is real than the ones these kids are carrying around?

PS. I've seen these green ones on the Internet...they're really pretty!

KillarneyRose 02-24-2004 09:53 AM

Thanks for all the advice, everyone! I appreciate it :)

I will probably end up getting the bag :) . I am hoping the Signature collection will end up being a classic like the Gucci or LV monograms, instead of being super trendy but I guess it's imossible to tell ahead of time so I may as well take the plunge!

I just don't want it to end up like my Kate Spade messenger bag that my 8 year old is now using for her school books! lol

i agree. that's how i am except with my coach, especially when i'm going grocery shopping or to get my nails done.

I think the STYLE of bag you've picked makes a big difference. It's incredibly classy, somewhat grown-up, but still fun with the signature fabric. Although the style is new, I would wager it's not likely to be knocked off with the same frequency as some of the other Coach signature pieces. I would definitely go for it- this Coach is one of my faves!

ztabchbum 02-24-2004 12:46 PM

I love my coach clutch - in all red, no khaki thank god. I HATE BURBERRY! I'm sorry but in the area I live (Tampa, FL) there aren't any respectable women that carry them. I don't know how to say it without being a complete snob but they're all ghetto trash. It's a real shame too. I think the bag that you're looking at purchasing will be a GREAT purchase! It's a classic khaki that will never go out of style and you can carry all year round. Go buy it already!

Wow, allow me to hijack this thread by saying that you are a really good mom if you're letting your 8 year old do that. I don't think my mom would've ever let me do something like that. Your daughter's lucky. End hijack.

And I can just because I own a Coach purse. YOU ARE SO MISUNDERSTOOD DEAR! You really need to crawl out of that rock you're hiding under. Mine was a GIFT - 1st year anniversary and it only cost $110 - pennies compared to some other's I've seen. I finance everything as well.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee - purchased in March 2003, still owe $16K+.

Stetson University - graduated in Dec. 2001 and owe $5K+ (I was LUCKY that my parents/mom paid for 4 years out of her pocket).

Mom/School - I owe her $3-4K+ that sallie mae would not give me for my final months at school.

Credit Cards - 1 (because I've paid off the others) and it's at $470+ which was PART of the down payment I put on my new Jeep.

So yes, I will continue to give you the wave because you are very misunderstood in your way of thinking.
