GLO Nicknames
A topic in Theta Nu Xi's forum sparked this. Are there nicknames you prefer for your organization and some you can't stand? Perhaps it will be a lesson to us all, especially those who innocently have been using inappropriate terms to describe your org.
I'll start... I prefer to be called a "Theta Nu" or "Theta Woman." I've found that other Theta Nus don't necessarily like to be called "ONEs" or "ONE girls." I haven't experienced this yet, so I'm not sure how I would react. I do know that I was wearing my letter pin recently and someone said, "What's ONE?" I said, "It says Theta Nu Xi. It's a multicultural sorority." Of course, I got the crazy look and have to MOVE ON! :) I wanted to let you know of some nicknames I've heard people say in my college town, but I'd prefer to ask individual members of these sororities if they'd like for me to put them on this thread or not. Those sororities are Alpha Gamma Delta, Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Alpha Delta Pi and Delta Phi Epsilon. *These nicknames are ignorant so I'm not just going to post them without consideration for your orgs!!! Edited to add: I know there are other nickname threads, but most just stated nicknames rather than what members prefer to be called and what they hate to be called! |
Sigma Phi Epsilon - SigEp
Pretty simple huh? |
Nicknames..
I'm in Chi Omega, and I use Chi O a lot (and hear it a lot!) when referring to my sorority, but I hatehatehate "Chi Ho." A lot of my own sisters use it towards each other to be funny, but it just isn't funny to me, kinda sad because that's not what we are or how we'd want to represent ourselves to anyone else...so why would you want to call yourself that?

We called ourselves A-Chi-Hoes... i think the sisters in the chapter still call themselves that. Obviously its funny when WE do it, but I'd be insulted if I heard someone else say it. But I dont get offended when I hear a sister saying it. as for nicknames, we say Alpha Chi, A-Chi-O, or just saying the letters AXO. |
If someone is rude enough to use a nickname for my organization which is less than flattering... I look at them and say, "Wow, that's the first time I've ever heard that!" and then I kind of roll my eyes, so THEY are the one's looking stupid.

Here is a link to some of the nickname threads:
http://greekchat.com/gcforums/showth...ight=nicknames http://greekchat.com/gcforums/showth...ight=nicknames http://greekchat.com/gcforums/showth...ight=nicknames http://greekchat.com/gcforums/showth...ight=nicknames Unfortunately, these threads never stay friendly for very long and they lead to a lot of hurt feelings. I think it would be best to just refer back to the older threads if anyone wants to know nicknames. There was a thread started by LeslieEMU that has the real nicknames for the GLOs. If you do a search, you should be able to find it. :) ETA: I decided to make it easier. Here is the Real GLO Nickname thread. |
Just thought of a sweet one!
Pi Beta Phi = Pi Smiles (I especially love this one since my mom is a Pi Phi)
|
Maybe we can change the title to "preferred nicknames: what people should call your GLO" or something like that, because this could be a good discussion.
I personally prefer Alpha Sigs or ASA (although as with most groups, we are encouraged not to use the "English" letters - and there are lots of Asian Students Associations, etc). I know some of our chapters use "Alphas" but that reminds me too much of 90210. :p Either that, or that we're biting on Alpha Phi Alpha. |
At my chapter (and I think generally) we call ourselves Taus :)
Except, I don't think I can yet :p |
Alpha Phi Omega=I usually use APO. I did have someone give me a hard time about that once, a while ago..."Your name is not Alpha Pi Omicron, so therefore APO is INCORRECT!"
If there is a nasty nickname for us I haven't heard it. :D Lambda Omega Pi=LOPi. I just remembered something. Before I started IU, I got a book called The Right Foot. (an unofficial guide to IU) It said that AEPhi's nickname (though it could have been Alpha Phi's...I don't know where my copy is to check!) was Phisters. I've never heard anyone else call it that though. Has anyone else heard it or might that have been something just for the IU chapter? |
For Alpha Sigma Tau, I've heard "Alpha Taus", "Taus" and "ASTs". One chapter I met at convention (there's probably more than one though) were known as the "Alpha Sigs" on their campus. That really messed with my head because on my campus, ASA was known as the "Alpha Sigs".
**Apparently on my campus (when I was there) we couldn't do any nickname with less than two syllables! Here's the list that we had: AST=Alpha Taus ASA=Alpha Sigs DZ=DZ (or Delta Zeta, cause it was as short as the 'nicknames') AZD=Alpha Xis Fraternities: Phi Sigma Kappa=Phi Sigs Sigma Phi Epsilon=Sig Eps Phi Lambda Chi=Phi Lambs Sigma Tau Gamma=Sig Taus Theta Xi=Theta Xi (again, no need to shorten it!!) On your campus, do all the groups have a similar naming system, or are some groups known by one word names (Taus) while others are known by two words or English letters (Sig Ep or ASA)? PsychTau |
Delta Sig...but we tried to change our campus nickname to just Delta because SOME people wanted us to be modeled after Delta Tau Chi.
|
I personally like being called an Alpha Sig, an ASA or an Alpha Sigma Alpha. We have AOTT, Alpha Phi Alpha and AKA on our campus so to be called an Alpha would be rather confusing. I have heard people call us A-Sig (which I am not offended by but don't particularly like).
|
For Delta Gamma, people call us DG (Dee Gee), or Delta Gam!
|
We also get Delta G's sometimes...but mostly in our songs...

We go by D Phi E or "Deephers". I personally don't mind either one.
|
Preciousjeni, what you said about some girls not liking to be called ONE or whatever reminded me of how AXiD, how sometimes we're called Fuzzies. Some chapters use that exclusively, others violently hate it. I don't use it since my chapter didn't, but I don't mind when people do. I rather like using Alpha Xi instead of AXiD, but I'm just not in the habit of doing so.
Sister Havana, with the APO thing, did they want you to use AFO instead or something? PSP had a big debate over our listserv a while ago, whether we were "PSP" or "FSP". You can tell where I stand on that. Does anyone use F as an abbreviation for Phi? I think it looks silly, for some reason. |
One of my sisters mentioned once that they (not really clear on who they were, she didn't say...or maybe I wasn't listening :D ) wanted to change our nickname to the Pi Beta's.
I didn't like that idea at all. |
The only nick I know for SAI is, well, SAI. :D Which is fine.
Here's one though, for another org, that I H-A-T-E HATE!!! I HATE WHEN PEOPLE REFER TO A BROTHER OF PHI MU ALPHA AS A "PHI MU"!!! Arg! They're Sinfonians, or Phi Mu Alphas. Period. No offence to Phi Mu, but my Sinfonian boys would look a little silly wearing pink and white. ;) |
My sorority is Gamma Alpha Omega and we are known here on campus and Nationally as Gammas. Since we are a Historically Hispanic Sorority we call each other Gammitas, which I've heard that some of the other sororities on campus hate to hear, because of Gamma Phi Beta.
To lady Pi Phi- It would be weird to have Pi Beta Phi on campus and hear other Greeks call your sisters Pi Beta. That just DOES NOT SOUND RIGHT AT ALL. I hope your sorority doesn't change your nickname.....It just wouldn't be RIGHT or Pi Phi |
when i was at school we were the AZDs or Alpha Xis. Phi Mu was Phi Mu, Sigma Kappa were Sigma K or sigma Kappa, Alpha Omicron Pi was AOTT, Tri-Sigma was Sigma and Zeta Tau Alpha was Zeta.
All pretty simple! |
Alpha tau omega=ATO or taus
ofley simple. |
At my school, my sorority (Alpha Delta Pi) was known as ADPi or AD
|
Now, I know the nickname of my sorority is a little stange, and it takes alot of imagination but, here it is:
Tri Delta or Tri Delt |
Phi Delta Theta --> Phi Delt.. simple enough
|
We're just "Lambda's"
|
Gamma Phi or GPhiB. Pretty self-explanatory. I like both of 'em.

I think Kappa Alpha Theta is pretty much universally known as "Theta." The only other nickname I know of is KAT, which we use in a few of our songs, but it's more just to make the rhyme scheme work :)
On my campus Phi Mu Alphas are sometimes called Phi Mus, probably because our students aren't that knowledgeable about other Greek organizations. I would guess that most people don't even know that there's a sorority called Phi Mu. In general if we're not just calling them Phi Mu Alphas or PMAs, we call them the "Phi Mu boys" though, so I guess the distinction is made in that way. |

Phi Mu doesn't really have a nickname. Sometime's you hear the joke Phi Mooo--(sorta a negative one like Chi Ho) But we actually refer to ourselves as Moo's sometimes. Like we say "I'm going by the Moo house." or "She's a moo"

I always say Alpha Xi, it's easier than saying AZD and sounds better. Although I have had a few people confuse me saying Alpha Xi with Alpha Phi. I don't know why. ETA: At my undergraduate school we had: Alpha Chi Omega: Alpha Chi's Alpha Gamma Delta: Alpha Gam's Delta Zeta: DZ's Phi Mu: Phi Mu's Zeta Tau Alpha: Zeta For the boys: Pi Kappa Alpha: Pikes Pi Kappa Phi: Pi Kapps Sigma Phi Epsilon: Sig Eps Kappa Alpha Order: KA's Theta Xi: Theta Xi's Sigma Nu: Sigma Nu's Sigma Chi: Sigma Chi's Pi Lambda Phi: Pi Lam's Lambda Chi Alpha: Lambda Chi's Delta Sigma Phi: Delta Sig's Tau Kappa Epsilon: Teke's Delta Chi: Delta Chi's, DChi's Kappa Sigma: Kappa Sig's |
We're Phi Chi. People call us - you guessed it - Phi Chi.
Except for the occasional smarta@# who thinks calling us Fee Chee is hilarious. |
