Convention 2004

Anyone else going? I'll be there.

It's June 23-37 in Indian Wells, CA. Here's the info.

If several of us GCers are going, we'll have to meet up.

I'd like to go, it's just a matter of saving up the funds for the trip. I went in 2000 when it was in AZ. Has anyone else been to GC previously?

Janerz222 02-17-2004 01:19 AM

I missed that one in AZ in 2000. (My first baby was just 3 months old and I couldn't figure out how to get to all the sessions with him in tow.)

This will be my 5th Convention. They are incredible - tiring, energizing, the whole shebang! I'm glad it's on the west coast this year.

southernmisskat 02-17-2004 02:44 AM

I'll be there. I'm really excited. I've never been to convention or California.

Hi from Mississippi!

Wow!! How nice to see a fellow Mississippi Theta!! I am from the Ole Miss chapter from WAYYYY back in 1980. It's nice to have company in the Magnolia State :) How is the chapter there doing?

Things are going well for Zeta Psi. We are still a small chapter, but we have accomplished a lot in the 5 years that we've been on campus. Oh, and 1980 wasn't that long ago. :)

Five, wow that's awesome. I'm just hoping to make this my second one. :)

I'm just a wee bit  older than you (judging by your grad. year).

thetalady 02-18-2004 01:39 AM

Age is only a number!

Age just isn't too much of a concern anyway, is it? After I turned 40, I had an epiphany... age just doesn't MATTER!!! I became so much happier after realizing that and giving up most make up, hot rollers, panty hose, and high heels in honor of the day :D

(I was initiated in 1980, graduated in 1983)

kaokite 02-18-2004 01:58 AM

I'm going too... it will be my SIXTH convention.

The only one I missed since my initiation was 1996.

Very excited! I'm going to bring along my badge collection for anyone who wants to see them. Us 'pinhead' collectors are getting together at the beginning of the month, so maybe I'll have a few more special ones as well!

I'll also have my badges to sell. Right now I think I have about 7 or so that I'm willing to part with so if anyone is interested.....

see you all there!

I think it's just cool all the Thetas that you meet from all over the place. I met an alum from our chapter when I was there in 2000, and she was hoping that her daughter would come to our campus and become a Theta (which she did). Now her daughter is going this summer because she's the president of the chapter.

And Katy has SUCH incredible badges!!! I would love to see them in person some day :)

Since I live in San Diego (less than 2 hours away) I am thinking of going to Convention and staying with friends. It would be my first! (Couldn't afford to attend the others held since I was initiated in 2000.) Since I don't have much vacation time off from work I am not sure when I will be attending. I'd like to be there for the whole event but that be challenging. I understand that many women need all of Sunday to travel, but I do wish it started Thursday night. :( Anyway, hope to see many of you there!

And Katy has a very SPECIAL new addition to her collection to show off! I think it is an 1877 badge from Epsilon chapter (Wooster College, 1875-1913)

33girl 05-05-2004 08:51 PM

Pardon my hijack...but Wooster had nationals?? Wow, I didn't know that.

Definitely! Just FYI, this is the College of Wooster in Wooster Ohio. From our history, it looks like at least the national GLOs were banned in 1913, which is why the Theta chapter there closed. I know there are several locals there now. I wonder if any of them were once affiliated with a national?

For those of you going to Convention later on this week, I hope you all have a wonderful time. I was planning on going until I got a new job a few months ago and then lack of vacation time made it impossible. :( Hopefully I'll get to go in 2006.:D

ThetaPrincess24 06-21-2004 10:00 PM

i'm still willing to send someone a check for the cost of a convention t-shirt in size small............PM me please.

I wish I could go, but this was the only time clinical microbiology was offered and it's a requirement for my second degree nursing program :(

thetalady 07-01-2004 08:43 PM

We want the Convention news!

So, anybody got a minute to tell us about the Convention? What kinds of exciting things went on?

Janerz222 07-03-2004 11:00 PM

I'm sure Katy will have additions to this:

The Convention was one of the nicer ones I've attended: the resort (both facilities and staff) were just incredible, the sessions ran smoothly (and on time, even ending early!), Thetas of all ages were thoughtful and honest in debating legislation, the final banquet was lovely (as always).

The highlight for me was hearing Maureen Syring speak at the Panhellenic Luncheon. Maureen is a former Grand President and NPC delegate of Delta Gamma (and I believe also a former chair of NPC). If you ever get a chance to hear her speak, do it. Her talk was a great combination of from-the-heart passion about the benefits of Greek life, no-holds-barred honesty about where we all can improve, hilariously told anecdotes about enlightening Greeks and non-Greeks in random airport encounters, and inspiring yet straight-forward challenges to her audience to uphold what we say we are.

If anyone wants to know the outcome of any particular legislation, pm me. I don't think it's that appropriate to post it here publicly.

The following members were elected to Grand Council:
Fraternity President: Karen Albrecht Ledbetter, Gamma Tau/Tulsa
Fraternity VP College: Kathleen Markey, Chi/Syracuse
Fraternity VP Alumnae: Debbie Bornmann Allen, Delta Theta/Florida
Fraternity VP Education: Katie Busby Morrow, Epsilon Zeta/Ole Miss
Fraternity VP Finance & Facilities: Lyn Stewart Simensen, Gamma Gamma/Rollins
Fraternity VP Membership: Amy Hayner Kates, Alpha Phi/Tulane
Fraternity VP Public Relations: Carole Frankovich Brophy, Alpha Nu/Montana

I'm still catching up on sleep. ;)

Janerz222 07-06-2004 01:10 PM

And I can't believe I forgot to mention this:

This was the first Convention since the changes in the alumnae program. I believe there were over 120 alumnae chapter delegates at Convention - this is amazing! It was great to see so many former clubs and brand-new alumnae chapters represented as full participating delegates.:)

Theta for a lifetime!
