Jessica Simpson has gone too far...

I can't believe she's done this....

Her new "song" now out is a freakin' cover.......of Berlin's "Take My Breath Away"!!!! WTF???

I first heard her sing it on Oprah w/the boy singing along also..my gawd..I wanted to cry...it was so horrible. Why can't people write their own music?? :(

Unregistered- 02-13-2004 10:29 PM

SO?

People do covers all the time.

Besides, Berlin didn't even like that song anyway. It was one of their biggest hits, but it was what kinda led to their breakup.

CC1GC 02-14-2004 01:02 AM

As long as her video is topless i don't care what she's singing.

cutiepatootie 02-14-2004 01:26 AM

her and her "boy" ...that would be her husband....sang the song ecause thatw as the song they first kissed too... my god you act like it was a crime she sang a song from another artist like other artis dont sing other songs...

get a life!

rayray 02-14-2004 03:54 AM

Glad I'm not the only one with this feeling, I love jessica and Nick they both can sing, so why not sing anything they can!

people do covers all the time! What about No Doubts "its my life" if jessica has gone to far then everyone who has done a cover has

and now, they're getting back together on VH1's bands reunited.

99% of pop stars do not write their own music.

Same for country singers.

They're just pretty faces with decent voices. For some strange reason, we give them a lot of credit for it.

That's a cover? I love that song! Who sang it before?

This is Jessica Simpson, not Ella Fitzgerald. We're not talking about a great musical talent covering one of the great standards.

This is more like, "What do you think of McDonald's McRib sandwich?"

rayray 02-14-2004 04:29 PM

From what i know "Its my Life" was originally done in the 80s by a Talk Talk

...so even big named bands do covers

And theirs was one of my favorite episodes of Bands Reunited. Theirs and Klymaxx's.

And for the record, I love McRib sandwiches.

GeoffZ 02-14-2004 08:40 PM

I liked the Berlin and Klymaxx epsiodes of Bands Reunited too. I doubt Berlin even cares that Jessica is doing the cover. It's not a big deal.

What is the sincerest form of flattery, after all?

"Take my breath away" is a silly little pop song.

Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey--the "boy" in question--are silly little pop singers.

Exactly what is the problem? Covers are a fact of life, which if popular end up helping the songwriter or original artist just as much as the cover artist. Hell, Dolly Parton credits Whitney Houston's cover of "I Will Always Love You" for lining her pockets with royalties, even though it was more popular than her version.

I wouldn't mind seeing Whitney and Dolly do a duet singing " I will always love you."

That's fine as long as you don't try to pass it off as fine cuisine.

I have a friend who is a member of ASCAP, and once had the #1 dance song in the US. According to him, the songwriter almost always makes more than the performer from a hit song.

OrigamiTulip 02-15-2004 07:11 PM

The mark of a good cover is that it either brings a new perspective to a piece of music, or honors the artist who previously released it. Jessica Simpson's version of "Take My Breath Away" does neither.

justamom 02-15-2004 08:00 PM

ariesrising has said many things that I feel about "cover" songs. It's like-Don't you have the imagination and creativity to think of something new? Plus, the new version SHOULD take the listener to a DIFFERENT place, not replicate what the original had us thinking or feeling. Unless the singer can (as Simon says) make it their own, they ought leave it alone, because it will NEVER measure up to the original.

The examples of Respect and I Will Always Love You are excellent examples of singers making it their own. Muskrat love was a song the Captain and Tenille (YUCK) made popular-they even performed it for the Queen. It was written and performed by Willis Allen Ramsey. The original, though few have heard it, FAR surpasses the cover. Still C&T made it their own and it sold like hot cakes.

WoW! Totally different subject than I thought! I thought this thread would be about Jessica's latest attempt to make it to XXX store's shelves with her body cream stuff she showed off on Letterman. JUST ADD SPRINKLES! Ewwww, now THAT'S going too far! LMAO!

are you talking about the Dessert line that she's done for Sephora? i don't think there's anything too wrong with that. a lot of brands have flavored products. one of my favorite mac lipglasses is flavored.

AchtungBaby80 02-15-2004 11:41 PM

Why does every famous actress/singer/heiress these days have to come out with a clothing/handbag/cosmetics line? Come on...pick one thing and do it well...don't be mediocre at several things.

Ummmm I don't think it was Sephora, but I could be wrong. It's like something you'd find LITERALLY on the shelves of Spensor's Gifts or a XXX store. I don't know what all Sephora does, but Jessica looked abosultely tacky spraying this moose-sized can of stuff on Letterman and offering sprinkles. Her lack-of-virginity has taken a turn for the worst ;)

did anyone watch newlyweds?!? i hought their rendition of "Take my Breathe Away" sounded awful... but maybe I have no ear for music? What did everyone esle think?

kdonline 02-20-2004 02:19 AM

she's not the only one

I got sick when I heard Fred Durst's cover "Behind Blue Eyes."

He is SO not worthy.

Unregistered- 02-20-2004 08:04 AM

I was on my way to work tonight and I heard the Black Eyed Peas' remake of the old Spandau Ballet hit "TRUE".

I immediately thought of "The Wedding Singer" but then I started thinking about this thread too.

Although I have not heard their rendition of the song, I think anything with Jessica Simpson singing sounds awful. She has the potential to be a good singer if she'd stop trying to sound all breathy, and maybe she should try enunciating a little bit too.

I know "pop" stars dont write most of thier music but i feel we dont give them enough credit for the stuff they do write. I think everyon is so caught up in the categorizing them in the POP category. just a note Jessica did write a lot of her own songs, and i happen to be a 98 degrees fan and they wrote 11 out of 13 songs on thier last album. It seems like we dont like when they do cover songs but those are the albums that sell more.

Just a question, whats the difference between a pop star and a broadway performer, as far as i know the most famous shows are performed by people that didnt write the music or dialogue themsleves.

Good point in this discussion. I do see a difference though.
The material will stand on it's own as evidenced by the numerous companies that travel or local artistic theaters that often have pretty darn good runs when the talent is available. Heck people can be enthralled at a High School production of Oklahoma!
When you think of those masters that kept/keep putting them out, you DO know their names.
Rogers and Hammerstein, Leonard Bernstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Gershwins, Cole Porter... The singers must be actors as well (not to mention dancing is often demanded) It's the part of the whole, not the 3 minutes. There is a story to tell.
(I guess you COULD compare it to some concerts, though I wouldn't...)
With Pop stars, the person who wrote the song is sometimes a mere blip in the credit listing. Now, when you have a team like
Elton John and Bernie Taupin or even farther back- Dionne Warwick and Burt Bacharach, EVERYONE knew who the writer was and the singer acknowledged their importance.
For me, these days so much is fabricated in the studio. Technology has enhanced even live performances. Sometimes I think all they are is a body up there-where's the talent? If they at LEAST wrote their own music, OR FOUND A NEW WRITER, there would be something "extraordinary" about them. I am certainly NOT critical of a great vocalist with a unique sound. When they release a song, they own it.

What happened to that really long thread about Jessica Simpson??

I have something I want to post there that doesn't really fit anywhere else

ETA: Nevermind I'll just post it here.

So I was watching a commercial for season 2 of Newlyweds and the have Nick and Jessica talking about kids. Jessica says she's always wanted to adopt. She even said she almost adopted a chold at 16. 16?!!! What kind of agency lets you adopt at 16. I don't care how rich you are, no respectable agency lets any 16 year old adopt. Unless she was talking about "adopting" a kid from Foster Parents Plan or Christian Children's, or the like (which means she would be sponsoring a child and not actually adopting the child). But damn!
