MTV furthers the controversy..

since the super bowl fiasco, mtv has decided to move some videos they consider too racy into the late night slots

videos too racy...

'toxic' britney spears
'megalomaniac' incubus
'this love' maroon 5

also videos by blink 182 and others

mtv

my thinking is that they are only moving 6 videos. what about the rap videos?!

darn my spelling error

Hootie 02-10-2004 01:19 AM

I saw the most racey rap video the other night on BET. I cannot remember who's video it was, but the girls in it were booty dancing and wearing thongs...the girls in the bathtub were naked and making out (the breasts were censored). "Must be your a$$ cuz it ain't your face" seemed to be the chorus. Overall though, I was appauled (call me a conservative, but I just didn't think it was necessary.
Now - I don't know if that video is on MTV, but if it were, it definitely belongs on the after 10pm slot!

ETA: CMT did the same thing with the Rascal Flatts video "I Melt" in which the guitarist got out of bed naked, and all you saw was his naked bum (BTW - HOTTIE). Before 10pm the video was censored and after 10pm it wasn't. But there was quite an uproar about this video.

That is Nelly's "Tip Drill". :o I have lost some respect for Nelly since I've seen that video. I thought he had more respect for women than that. I'll admit it though, the video was kind of funny.

Are you kidding me? I would have never thought of that video as a Nelly video because it's just that bad. I guess I was too shocked to notice who was rapping.

RACooper 02-10-2004 04:11 AM

Look the same crap happened years ago with the Alice in Chains video "Rooster", with claims that it would cause un-due trama or suffering amongst veterans.... MTV moved to a later "mature" slot with the intention that it would cause no more issues...

Don't know how efffective it was but, the video was prime rotation here in Canada.... but I can admit that I could see how it could be an issue with Vietnam Vets....

As for the crap regarding Jackson/Timerlake.... who cares, the more people make an issue of it, the more weight it has.

crazydphie 02-10-2004 06:43 AM

Maybe I see things differently because I'm a Canadian, but i really dont think the whole Jackson/Timberlake thing was that big a deal. I saw it live, & it's not like you saw her actual breast. it was covered by what ever that thingy was. But am I the only one who remembers lil kim showing up at the mtv awards in half a dress & a beaded flower over one boob? no one made such a big deal about that...i realize Janet is waaay bigger, & 14 million ppl or something watched the superbowl, but it's the same thing! Anyways, I just dont think it's such a big deal.

I agree that it is the same thing, but I think maybe this was made a bigger deal of because it was CBS as opposed to MTV. Also, I think it was more shocking because people weren't expecting it. At least Lil Kim wasn't hiding anything... literally... plus, people expect it from her.

AGDee 02-10-2004 08:01 AM

The main difference is that, if, as a parent, you don't want your children to see these things quite yet, you don't let them watch the MTV award shows because you know something outrageous is going to happen. Conversely, you don't think the Super Bowl is something you're going to have to censor from them. My daughter has a huge crush on Justin Timberlake and I don't want her thinking that it's ok for him to rip off a woman's clothes on TV. Also, I don't want my son thinking he can just reach over and rip off a girl's shirt.

Was this on UNCUT? That show airs LATE at night.

The only way your children would think that this behavior was okay was if you as a parent taught them that it was.

Watching 'Nipplegate' would not teach any child with good parents that doing that was okay becausee they would already know better. Only a parent's example would convey that kind of message.

My cousin is 4, saw the superbowl show and was convinced that JT was going to get in BIG trouble, because he knows that boys shouldn't do that to girls. His parents taught him that. Any parent worth the name doesn't let the tv teach their kids, they do it themselves.

AGDee 02-10-2004 10:51 AM

True, but you don't deliberately expose your kids to things that you believe are wrong. There are studies that show that the more we are exposed to something taboo or horrific, the more desensitized we become to it.

I think the issue that bothers me most is that celebs are trying harder and harder to shock people and it *is* requiring more and more to shock. With Elvis, it was shaking his hips. Now they have to get naked.

while i know it is nothing new to see something like this on mtv you must remember that thats cable. You pay to have that and know that there could be things like that on the programs. While with network tv you don't expect something like that ecspecially during a football game.

I think that some people have forgotten that not everyone has cable and not everyone sees mtv and stuff all day.. so seeing something like this on network is different.

It more than likely was. That's where I saw that hideous video.

She was though, in a way. She had a pastie that covered her entire nipple (including areola). That is "acceptable" even on regular TV.

Janet's nipple piercing did have nipple/aerola showing through. Of course, we all had to see the shot frozen and magnified 500 times to know that, but it was there. So that makes it "unacceptable". Dumb but true...

huh???? I just saw this the other night and I didn't see anything racy. Am I too old to get it? Were there freaky hidden messages in there?

Considering they hardly ever play videos anymore anyway, I don't know why they are making a big deal of it.

Well, unfortunately for me, one of my guy friends had a really close up picture of the exposed area as his messenger icon. and althought it took me a few minutes to figure out what it was, you could see that everything 'unacceptable' was covered (just like lil kim) Dont get me wrong, I dont think what she did was right by any means, but I still dont really have a problem with it.

What blink182 video is RACY? They're all PG-13 at best.

Hmmm, we must have seen very different pictures then, because I clearly saw a different shade of brown under that sun thing - which says to me that is wasn't just "normal" breast skin there...

At any rate, I agree with you. It's not a big deal to me either...then again, I'm an "artist" so I think I have different views than a lot of folks.

Blink 182 has a new video that is really morbid actually. It's something out of a horror show actually. It's all black, death-like, women dressed like porcelin dolls. I forget if one of them like drowns herself or not.

It's not really BAD but I could see where it'd give some kids nightmares.

OK...I never watch MTV anymore but I have a pretty good idea to what song that is for. I just couldn't ever see them doing a racy video.

mu_agd 02-10-2004 02:09 PM

what was the problem with Maroon 5's This Love video?

But JT ISN'T in "trouble" -- he had to apologize -- like so many other celebs, people see them do stuff and get away with it, and then they want to be just like them.

I'll agree with you definitely, lovely, that parents have to set the rules and enforce them -- no argument there. I just think that the nipplegate (lol at the name!) participants deserve what is coming to them, and the FCC should set the example here. Of course after okay'ing the *F* word, I don't have much faith in the FCC.

Honestly, I'm not all up in arms about the whole thing. I don't watch the half-time show for the same reason that I don't watch MTV when they show videos -- I just don't need to see all that. I can see porn on the internet for free if I wanted to.

I will say, however, that the piercing was pretty cool - I'm a chicken, and no piercings other than two in the ear - but it was pretty. Still - I didn't (and apparantly lots of other folks agree) need to see that during a "family" sports event.

ETA: I think what makes me mad about the whole thing, is the LEAST they coulda done was own up to it -- this whole "wardrobe malfunction" is a giant load of BS. If you did it - be woman/man enough to say so.

krazy 02-10-2004 03:07 PM

How come these guys can all release music videos like this and no one gets mad, but if a corporation was to release some sort of commercial like this, even if it just aired on "appropriate" channels/times, the feminists would be screaming bloody murder... Just wondering, not defending or accusing anything or anyone.

krazy 02-10-2004 03:08 PM

Oh yeah, and what is the deal with Meglomaniac? I have not seen it, but incubus is good. Anyone know?

ISUKappa 02-10-2004 03:27 PM

I think the issue with the Maroon 5 "This Love" video there are a few lengthy segments where the singer is in bed making out with a topless woman. You can't see anything explicit, but it gives off a very soft-core-porn vibe. The regular video isn't even available on MTV.com anymore, only the live, TRL video.

Obviously, VH1 doesn't have the same issues as the video is still available for viewing on their site:
http://www.vh1.com/artists/az/maroon_5/artist.jhtml
then click on "This Love" full-length video

ISUKappa 02-10-2004 03:36 PM

As far as "Megalomaniac" is concerned, the video has themes of anti-war depicted in a strange way--it uses propaganda films from Nazi Germany and has some disturbing graphic effects that are a little odd at first view. I think it's a great video, but I think the average MTV viewer would not understand it. It's a little more sophisticated than Jessica Simpson.

Again, it's on VH1 if you're interested in watching it.

GeekyPenguin 02-10-2004 03:43 PM

ISUKappa, thanks for the VH1 links - I just watched the blink-182 video and I actually thought the spiders were the creepiest part. I remember when I was younger, MTV would show Marilyn Manson and NIN videos during the middle of they day, and this is tame compared to those.

I can see that this video does show a lot of skin but nothing inappropriate at all.

WHATTHEFAAAAAACK?

Ok yeah MTV....b/c you let Britney kiss another chick LIVE....but you know, her latest video is just over the top
Maybe some of us will not see you as hypocritical when you stop airing 3 way makeout sessions on shows like Dismissed, etc....

By the way I think MTV should keep all of it as it used to be a station aimed towards college kids and not grade schoolers....I just think they're being a lil hypocritical.

Actually, when I said Lil Kim wasn't hiding anything, I meant that it was all hanging out from the beginning. Unlike Janet, who came out fully dressed (relatively, anyway) and then... SURPRISE!

I am so annoyed at all of these stupid publicity stunts. Like kissing Madonna, getting married in Vegas and then immediately getting it annulled, or exposing yourself to the world during the Super Bowl halftime show is really going to make me wanna buy your album

tinydancer 02-11-2004 12:33 AM

I, for one, miss the old MTV - back when it first started. All music, all the time. We would watch for hours.

OK, I'm officially an old fogie...:p
