First thing you did as an AKA...

was? Also, tell us some of the most interesting things you've done as a member of AKA, i.e. community service events, fund raisers, step shows, etc. I agree with SF Victoria, you guys are great http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif.

AKAtude 05-17-2000 04:07 PM

The first major thing I did as an AKA was attend the SAR conference in Atlanta a week after crossing over in '95. It was simply amazing. I was in awe of my sorors and the way AKA handled business.

There are so many interesting things I've done as an AKA, I don't know where to begin. I guess I'll share just a few from my undergrad days including the mentor program, after-school tutoring, the annual "Showtime at the Apollo", the annual Black History Carnival, the Little Miss AKA pageant, the road trips, and yes, our step shows were always all that. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/cool.gif

Supermodel1908 05-19-2000 11:55 AM

The first MAJOR thing that happened after becoming a woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha was the North Atlantic Regional Conference. It was wonderful to see so many sorors from many different states all working together. It was wonderful to see Soror C. Edith Booker in action as well as Supreme Basileus Norma S. White.

Captivator#6 05-20-2000 12:57 AM

The first thing I did AFTER becoming an Alpha Kappa Alpha woman was to attend The South Atlantic Regional Conference(I think we left 2 days after becoming official)

But I think the first MAJOR thing I did was turn to my Mom(who is also a soror) and recieve a hug from her. This meant soooo much to me!

As AKAtude said we had A LOT of Community Service activities...but I think I enjoyed the Homecoming Step Show the best. 1st because we raise a lot of money for scholarships and second because it was the first time I got to put on my pink and green jersey and step with my sorors!

much ivy luv!

For those that attended the SAR conference, what chapters were you initiated into?

DreamfulOne 05-18-2001 09:52 PM

Just thought I would bring this back up for all those who crossed Spring 2k1.

Kiara 05-18-2001 11:00 PM

The first thing that I did as a soror was thank God...for blessing me with what i had have tried to obtain for 4 years...and then i of course hit the greek stores..and went AKA NALIA CRAZY LOLOL SORORS u feel me..smile
Spring 2001

pink_ace 05-19-2001 01:46 AM

I have to agree with Soror Kiara about hitting the greek stores. But, the most interesting thus far (considering I'm a neo) was when me and three of my line sisters performed a skit at the senior brunch. It was so last minute and I was so nervous.

AlMighty14 05-21-2001 07:56 PM

First of all i would like to send a big SWEEEEEEEEEE WEEEEEEEEEEEE out to all my sands SPR 01'..... I feel all of the neo out there after i finish crying my eyez out and soaking my feet from all the step practice for our coming out show... i waited for my heart to come back down to earth and absorb all the the AlMighty above has allowed me to obtain on my long list of goals, wants and needs. i have yet to hit the nelia shops as i receive plenty of gifts..... THE SURVIVORS ..... AlMighty .... # 14.... sending out much love to all my sorors out there.... cause ive got much neo AKAtude right now. ;-o

jali0004 05-22-2001 11:45 PM

The real work begins AFTER you cross...and that's exactly what we did. My line started working For Alpha Kappa Alpha, and in BEHALF of Alpha Kappa Alpha as soon as we crossed!! We went to a local childrens' shelter where our chapter volunteers regularly. "Being of service" is what we came to do!!!

Skee Wee!!

First thing I did: I was sooooo bewildered that my line and I crossed that I was too afraid to ask my father if I could add this "I love AKA" sticker on my car...

The second, run into this store to get my line crossing jacket with all my line names...

AKA4MJ 05-23-2001 09:13 AM

The first thing I did was SKEEEEE- WEEEEE my heart out...because I could! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

The first program I attended was a book signing by one of my lovely Sorors.....

And I am too excited to put on the programs we are planning for the Fall!

Wonderful1908 05-23-2001 03:54 PM

Well as soon as we were "official" after our reception I went home and went to sleep for almost 10 hours!!!! I think that the first thing I did that really made me feel like an AKA was attend our first business meeting. Seeing how the business of AKA was handled upclose and personal really made me feel like a soror!

Strawberri 05-23-2001 04:45 PM

The first thing I did was Skee-phi my husband. Then I was ready for chapter meeting so that I could get to work in the name of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, INNNNNNCorporated.

SKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Steeltrap 05-23-2001 04:55 PM

We had our chapter meeting about a week after we came into the organization. Watching how my seasoned sorors handled things made me feel like an AKA. That feeling has and will continue to grow, with projects, the upcoming regional, et al.

Ideal08 05-23-2001 05:28 PM

The first thing I did as a soror was go to my chapter meeting. I was SO overwhelmed! The first big thing I went to was the "Great" Great Lakes Regional Conference last month.

I'm now looking forward to Boule 2002. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Discogoddess 05-23-2001 06:25 PM

The VERY first thing I did was cry like somebody stole something from me! The next was to hug my ship (that's sands/line sister for you non-Midwesterners) and try to feel my way around to hug other SORORS (my eyes were very watery). Then, after our luncheon, I had to hug my one and only ship/sands/ls goodbye, as she was heading home to TX with her dad that same day (can you believe we crossed like, on the very last possible day of school?--talk about suspense). Then I went partying with my non-greek girls in Chicago that night. It wasn't fun though, cuz they weren't feeling why I was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO pumped!

Of course, I called my two girls from high school to say "hey sands" to them, since we had all gone out for AKA the same semester. One of my girls, though, had to address me as "big sister", since she was still on line. I was expecting a SKEEEEEEEEEEEEE WEEEEEEEEEEEE from her, but she had to wait her turn (don't worry, she crossed a few days later).

I'm getting misty and saying a silent SKEEEEEEEE WEEEEEEEEEEEE just thinking about the memory!

Discogoddess i can definetly relate to crossing on the last possible day b/c we had our coming out show on the last day a reading day and the next day kicked off finals.... isn't it funny you work hard for something you really want AKA .... and then i had turn around and work equally as hard for those good grades... no need in becoming an AKA today and then be force to sit and watch all the activities from the backgroud b/c your grades didn't "cross" when u did...

PEACE, ONE LOVE
SKEEEEEEEE WEEEEEEEEE
i SKEE WEE every chance i get ive truly earned the right.....

HeartbrAKA 05-24-2001 01:12 PM

First thing I did was cry my eyes out, hug my sands and prophytes, then I Skee-Weee'd all the way home, slept-and woke up about two days later to attend my chapter meeting.

PrincessELG 05-24-2001 01:40 PM

To be honest the first thing I did when I crossed was go home and do my hair and made sure I was crisp, clean and AKAfied for the next day. I also attended the NARC and it was stupendous, I got to meet Soror C. Edith Booker and I even got to hug Soror Norma S. White. I was to happy. I also broke the bank on all the para I bought. I couldn't eat for like a week.

This was a cool thread. Just wanted to bring it back up to the top.

serenity_24 09-01-2003 06:42 AM

The first thing I did was open gifts. Then I went to a party where my line sisters and I strolled all night long non stop. It really sunk in that I was truely a member of Allllllpha Kappa Allllllpha Sorority, Inc. when I atended my first chapter meeting about a week later.

Dancerella1908 09-01-2003 11:59 PM

I hugged my sands as many of us cried. I love them. Then let out an earth shaking Skeeeeeee-Weeeeee!. My voice was so sour the next day from skee-weeing so much.

Then I opened all of my lovely gifts from sorors and family @ our crossing luncheon. I had so much stuff it took 2 cars to get it all home.

Next I put my AKA tag on my truck.:D

The next BIG event for me was being step master for the chapter to prepare for the regional conference. I was sooo honored being a neo. Of course I'm no fool, I asked for guidance from the seasoned Sorors. It was a wonderful experience.

PinkIvy 09-02-2003 04:41 PM

Let out a loud SKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, hugged my ISM and then SET IT OFF, after all the fun I went home and went to sleep, then went to my first party as a greek!!!!!!!

Didn't really get to experience being on Campus as an AKA until we got back for the fall semester 2000

evaclear04 09-02-2003 05:11 PM

The first thing i did after i crossed was found me a quiet place and thanked God for blessing me. I needed that quiet moment to let everything that had just happen completely sink in... Then i Skee Wee'd so loud i think i hurt something...lol! Hugs and tears all around and then went home and went to sleep ( I's tired!).

All though it seems small...I think working with some of the kids that I knew still in Hs and younger family member (who knew nothing about AKA) showing them how I (as an AKA) put in my time to help with community service was the greatest moment for me.

20PearlGirl 02-13-2004 10:40 PM

Hi Guys,

I know I'm late...the very first thing I did as a soror, was wear my sheild to Pappadeaux's y'all! There was no one else greek in sight, but I like crossed the day before, so I was proud. My 14 nephew reached over and said "Auntie, didn't you finish yesterday? Why are you wearing that today?" I felt SO STUPID, but I wore it anyway :) That was the best meal I ever had too!:D :D

SummerChild 02-14-2004 03:29 PM

The first thing that I did was to, upon the encouragement of my close soror friends, skee wee - I was too scared to do it w/out being coaxed! LOL Then I found some Visine and dropped it in my eyes b/c I had been crying like a baby and needed a refresher. :)

The first major things that I did was go to a committee meeting that week, celebrate my first Founder's Day a little over a month later, then attended my first Joint Founder's Day a week after that!

Skee-wee my sorors!!! Skee-wee! Skee-wee! :)

I had the same experience. The next week was final exam week. I had to wait until Winter quarter began before everyone could see me wearing my para. That's ok, the folk around town saw it! LOL

I cried alot....then got over and partied like there was no tomorrow because I knew chapter meeting was coming and it was time to conquer the chapter report, lol.

Would you mind?

With so many new members since this thread originally opened, would you ladies mind reviving the thread?

Pink and Green Tears

I cried like a baby. Then we took line pictures, chapter pictures, and more pictures for the next 2-3 hours! LOL :D

Pearls4Life 06-13-2005 10:06 PM

My first Actions as an AKA....

Let's see.....cried on my sponsors shouder and me and my line sisters took a million pictures and then my happy butt signed up for chapter committies. Next I began to work on the Boule' committee. Next I hit up college crib and went to the Reional conference in Alabama!

Lawd them sorors showed out at the step show....the graduate chapters stole the show!

GRITS 06-13-2005 11:35 PM

Let's see.... I cried, rejoiced, and praised the Lord. Some of us went to the mall to "secretly" shop for nalia. We had a get together at one of my ls's house off campus for hours until we remembered we had to go to school the next day like we didn't "know each other". The next week we had like 5 meetings. I became chapter hostess;), became a member of the registration committee for the undergrad. caucus in September, and got to work on so many little projects. Whew!!!! I probably left some things out....:D Oh yeah and we took more and more pictures!

PoisonIvy1908 06-14-2005 01:28 PM

I cried like a baby and hugged my LS. I cried some more when my Aunt (who is Silver Soror) pinned me and gave a beautiful letter that I treasure to this day. Then we went to out luncheon, where I cried some more. LOL. And finally home to sleep.

We didn't probate for another day or two and I was too busy trying to meet the deadline for the the campus newspaper (I was the Editor) so I didn't sleep for practicing for the probate and working on the paper. Needless to say, we probated on the 23rd and my bday was the 20th. It was a great bday present.

The first thing I did was go to a surprise party that the Ques gave us.

My ls, LitAKAtor can attest that I cried unconsolably for a minute. I cried through our entire process (but that is another story). Anyhow, cried, sang "I got my pearls" with all of the sorors. Went to our luncheon, cried some more. Did not pass go, went directly to meet my friend to show off my shiny pin. Went to buy some 'nalia. Went to the University of Tampa that night to watch our charter line come out. Had chapter meeting a week or so later and it has been mostly business ever since. I love my AKA.

ETA: I am so happy to see that most of us cried. It really peeves me now when I see some of the new members NOT crying. It just makes me feel like they don't appreciate this.

I agree w/you, Soror. I could not stop crying. I tried not to look at my line sisters, but it didn't work. I was really weeping.
Plus I had the waterworks for the 2004 line that we had and for the two lines the UG chapter we sponsor.
