Describe Your Pin(s)!

With all the talk on the ebay thread about the type of pins we each have, and realizing that we have one of the best sororities for personalizing our pins, I thought it would be fun to describe the pins we each have.

Pictures would be great! Also, note whether or not you wear a guard with yours, and if so, does it come from the bottom point, or from the side point?

An aside: I understand that one Alpha Delta Pi (who shall remain nameless, but is in the heirarchy) has a marvelous collection of pins - including an Adelphean pin!!! I would really, really like to see a poster or such made of her collection - can you imagine seeing over 100 different types of Alpha Delta Pi pins?!?!

SLUadpi 02-05-2004 01:10 AM

I just have a plain badge as of now, but I was wondering if any other chapters give pearl and gold balls to hang from their pins for scholarship? we give pearls for 3.7 and up and gold for 3.9 and up.

polarpi 02-05-2004 01:29 AM

My badge that I ordered for initiation is the plain badge, but I did order the guard to go along with it....I hang it from the bottom point and it's completely filled with dangles. Our chapter didn't give us the gold/pearl ball dangles for GPA, but I ordered them on my own, since I had gotten both GPA requirements for each type of ball dangle during my collegiate years.

The pin I saved off of ebay is gorgeous...it's a pearl and kind of turquoise/aquamarine alternating stones badge. I love the colors of it...I probably would've ordered one like it had I had the money when I first joined ADPi! :)

nauadpi 02-05-2004 03:10 AM

I picked my pin because it is both my birth stone and has adpi colors... So I have the pin with aquamarine points and the rest pearls. I also have a guard that hangs from the bottom, with these dangles:

-Scholarship Chair
-Webmaster
-150th
-Diamond Sister
-3x Pearls (3.5 and up)

In my chapter at the scholarship brunch held in the fall at parents weekend we gave out pearls for 3.5 and up and gold balls for 4.0s...

Random, but one of these days I will also probably pick up the Recruitment Information Manager dangle and I might pick up multiples for things I was multiple of (ie Diamond sister I have taken 3 total and I was scholarship chair two different years).

I will post a pic when I get a chance to finally take one...

Adelphean 02-05-2004 03:23 AM

What an awesome thread!

The pin I ordered at intitiation was not my first choice (I almost spent my last dime for the all diamond badge!), but was all I cared to spend at the time!

It is white gold , pearls, and has diamond points. I also have a Beta Beta chapter guard set with pearls. The guard hangs from the bottom point. I have dangles for Diamond sister, scholarship (pearl), and some more, which I can't think of at the moment.

not to start a tangent, but does anyone know if there is some kind of catalogue to order a guard from, or how much they cost?

ps. everyones pins sound gorgeous!

I'd be interested in this, too. I know that when you order something from the Gift Mart, they usually include a catalogue with the dangles in it, but have never seen one with the pins.

Btw, I absolutely LOVE the pins that have the guards from the bottom point! For some reason, they seem much nicer to me. Of course, mine are from the side.

When I was an Alpha, our NMC gave each of us a color brochure with all the different ADPi pins/guards so we could decide which pin we wanted to order. I believe I still have my brochure somewhere.

Do all chapters have that? Maybe our NMC has some extra brochures? :)

I personally have a plain white-gold pin. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this at least a few hundred times, but I plan on getting an "upgrade" as a graduation gift :)

Sherra -- GU is starting to give out the pearls for scholarship again! There was a time for awhile that we didn't because I guess our scholarship chair just stopped, but we will be doing it again this semester :)

ADPiAkron 02-05-2004 01:33 PM

I have the all pearl badge. I also have a guard (BT for Beta Tau) with many dangles on it (check out the dangles thread). But to answer a question, I have a pearl dangle for a GPA 3.5 or above. We give out pearls for 3.5 and above and gold balls for 4.0 or 3 consecutive semesters of 3.5 and above.

I wanted a more extravagant badge when I joined, but I paid for it with my own money and that was the best I could do as a poor college kid!!!

PS: My guard comes from the bottom...but until it was mentioned on here I did not know there were differences like that.

honeychile 02-05-2004 01:51 PM

!

I'm giggling to myself, because it's been a LONG time since I ordered my pin, and the prices have at least tripled since I did! So, obviously, I don't have a brochure! Do they still offer two sizes, the regular and a "minature" badge? I've never been able to really tell the difference!

What I currently have:

1) My initiation pin: White gold (which I never wear anymore! ), pearls with sapphire points, guard chain from the side, plain guard, dangles for Pledge Education VP (which is what is was then called), Rec Chair, Chaplain, Spirit Chair. Incidentally, parents were SO pro-greek that my pin was actually my high school graduation present! Of course, they thought it would be a key, but they were still good sports!

2) Pin I bought from a sister who was going to pawn it!: Yellow gold, pearls, guard unattached, but plain.

3) Pin I bought on ebay: Yellow gold, pearls with ruby points, set into a ring, but I need to have it resized. If it costs more to have it resized than I paid for it, I plan to sell it to a sister, and rescue a similar one from ebay & have a ring made in my size!

nauadpi 02-05-2004 03:07 PM

For those women looking into buying another pin/replacement pin or a guard from ADPi you just need to contact nationals dirrectly. Just pick up the phone and call. They will answer all your questions, and I believe can send you all the info...

I personally am considering doing this, because I would like to take a pin and make it into a charm for my charm braclet. My chapter advisor had it and it was neat. Her braclet is also interesting because it has all the fraternity pins she was pinned with in college made into charms too...

From looking on the brochure I recieved as an Alpha, there is only one size available... that is really interesting that two sizes were available at one time!

All the pins on this thread sound beautiful :)

ETA Question about pins: So far I haven't been able to attend any ADPi conferences, but does EO sell pins at the conferences also?

honeychile 02-05-2004 03:41 PM

Texas*princess, I know that a lot of new items are available at Convention, more or less to test their sale-ability. I don't know about pins.

FWIW, my initiation pin (the white gold one) is a minature, but I can't honestly see a difference between it and the standard size. Okay, I may see the difference: I think that the minature has three stones between each point, and the standard has 4. I guarantee that I'll be checking this out the minute I get home!

I'm hoping that y'all have been keeping your pins in either their original box, or in a nice jewelry box! I keep mine in one of the "official" ADPi crested boxes, which easily slips into a pocket for different rites. :)

She didn't give them back?!?!?!

I forgot to mention that I have a Rho Lambda pin, and I've often thought of having it made into a dangle. Probably very faux pax, but I can remember putting on all my pins meant a very "holey" dress!

No she didn't give them back...and was actually pinned by about 3 different fraternities...Including her husband's...

ASUADPi 02-05-2004 05:50 PM

I have the plain pin, which unfortunately I really don't like. I really, really, really want the pin with the sapphires but I don't wear it that often so part of me thinks it is fruitless to spend so much on a pin that I wear twice a year if I'm lucky. Although, Convention is a year away.

Question for y'all, when I transferred schools I did not affiliate to the local chapter, so I ergo never took a diamond or held an office. Anyways, I'm going back to school to obtain my teaching certification and I'm thinking as a reward to myself that if I maintain the GPA required for a scholarship ball that I would go ahead and buy myself one. Does this seem wrong to do?

Good! I don't remember a time when we didn't. IT was a huge deal to get your pearl and gold balls.

skerbow 02-05-2004 06:25 PM

I have three badges.

My badge was a suprise to me. I ordered the plain glad bade with guard. The guard connects to the bottom. (I have not bought my dangles yet, but my badge won't be complete until I do. So one day I will fill the guard.)I was not aware that white gold was an option. My parents contact the "Alpha Mom" (this was before NMC) and upgraded it to pearls with 4 blue saphire points. It is beautiful. I have pinned every one of my littles (2) and 3 of my grandlittles with my pin.

When I turned 20, 2 years into ADPi, i found out my great-aunt was an adpi from Georgia Tech in 1936. Having no legacies of her own, she sent me the best bday gift I have ever gotten, her badge. It is beautiful. It is smaller than mine. It doesn't have the raised hands and the stars are cut out. It has gorgeous opals all the way around the badge. Opals are not offered anymore to my knowledge. I actually end up wearing this one more than my own.

Just this past month, my boyfriend heard me venting about pins on ebay and decided to rescue one for me. So now i have a plain gold badge from he same time period as my great-aunts. It too is smaller and has the cut stars and flat hands. It came with a guard that connects on one side.

ADPiSAI 02-05-2004 06:34 PM

I decided to splurge when I got mine and chose the one that I really really wanted. It's yellow gold with alternating pearls and sapphires. I don't have a guard or any dangles yet, but one of these days, I'll get around to getting those...

Me too. Of course, I was spending every last dime on dues/fees/etc, and I didn't have much money for my badge. Maybe one day I'll find a nice one on ebay...I do look every now and then.

Hmm.. maybe it was something that stopped only very recently... I haven't heard anything about the scholarship balls until our new scholarship chair mentioned them at officer transistions and she was all excited about it :) Hopefully we get that tradition up and running again!!!

skerbow 02-06-2004 10:37 AM

Well maybe a few of us old school adpi can come in and remind the chapter of all the traditions we once did. :) Interested?

texas*princess 02-06-2004 11:45 AM

I think that would be an awesome idea!

skerbow 02-06-2004 12:37 PM

I think that might be something we can do :) I' know I would love it!

honeychile 02-07-2004 12:37 AM

Hmm... I think we need a thread on traditions!

As for pins, I once saw a plain pin with diamond points. It was awesome - VERY art deco!! That would be one I'd love to have...

TN-TX ADPi 02-07-2004 08:15 PM

I really, really wanted the white gold with diamonds all around it (diamonds are my birthstone), but there was NO way I could afford it, so I splurged just a little bit less and got a white gold pin with alternating pearls and amethysts. It is really pretty and I get complmented on it often. The guard attaches at the bottom, and I have not gotten all my dangles yet, but am working on it.

ADqtPiMel 02-09-2004 12:44 AM

I am just a poor college kid, so I have the gold badge with pearls at the 4 corners. My guard attaches from the side.

See, I think that would be gorgeous! That wasn't available when I got my pin!

That's the same one I have! Except, my guard attaches from the bottom.

I have most of my dangles attached by a jeweler so they don't don't slide around (and I won't lose them if the chain breaks away from the guard or badge). And yes, I have my scholarship pearl also. I never ordered a gold one when I got a 4.0 one semester. Maybe I should go back and do that.......

The reason I ordered this badge is a bit embarassing now. It was at our first pledge meeting (we were still called pledges then) and we had to pick which one we wanted. Well, I still wasn't too sure about this ADPi sorority and didn't want to spend a lot of money on a badge for a GLO I didn't know if I was going to like or not. Isn't that strange to think about? Now ADPi is such a HUGE part of my life I could not imagine myself anywhere else. God knew what He was doing when He matched me up with ADPi! The only reason I'm posting that is because some new members may not be too sure of their GLOs at first, but hang in there a while- the longterm benefits are great!

FirstAndFinest 02-10-2004 04:34 PM

Sisters,

In college, I ordered the plain one because "every ADPi must purchase her own badge." I only wore my mother's, which is yellow gold with pearls and rubies at the four corners (oh yeah, and the clapsed hads weren't raised when she was initiated, 1966). I wear my Gamma Lambda guard (plain yg, not roped or otherwise decorated) and it attaches to my badge from the side. (I had it on last Thurs and I am doing this from memory - I'll correct later if need be!)

I own a brandy-new badge (3/1/02) that I got from Ebay recently that is GORGEOUS! It is white gold, with alternating pearls and sapphires! It has raised clasped hands. I haven't yet ordered a guard for it, but I will, and will purchase white gold dangles for it too! (I know, I'm so corny...)

I own another white gold badge, plain, with flat clapsed hands, from 4/18/64 from Beta Tau chapter. It has a guard attached midway between the side and the bottom. I have worn it with the BT guard - Is that wrong???

Lastly, I have a 10K yellow gold, year unknown but flat clasped hands, with pearls and 4 sapphires at the points.

I did purchase one with all pearls, a roped guard, and flat clasped hands, but I can't find it!!!! :-(

I'd like to hear from you Sisters as to the issue of wearing a guard from another chapter. I have my mother's Delta Iota guard and would like to wear it. It's not roped, but not plain, it has some type of unusual design (if memory serves...) Her chapter is closed and I thought it would be nice to wear it.

Loyally,
Leslie

skerbow 02-10-2004 04:49 PM

In my personal opinion, i see nothing wrong with it. Each of those badges, especially your mom's, has a story that goes with it. At most, you can use this as an opportunity to rush PMs by explaining where you got the pin and what it means to you. This is also fun among sisters. I'm sure that every sister you tell about these pins will feel the same, knowing that you rescued the pins from pin collector hands.

My new badge has a guard on it, and I will wear it with pride. The original owner wore it that way, why shouldn't I? It is a piece of history and sisterhood.

lonestaradpi 02-10-2004 11:15 PM

Wow, my second post. I'm on a roll! I have two pins. When I first pledged, I didn't want to ask my parents for more money just for a pin that had a few more jewels on it so I went for the standard pin. About a year after that, I realized that I was really into this whole sorority thing (I too was a bit unsure of the sorority thing, now I realize what what a huge impact on my life the entire situation has had) and I wanted an upgrade. For Christmas, I chose the gold pin with pearls all around it. I also got a guard and some of my officer dangles.

I have a question about getting my pin, the original one without the pearls, cleaned. It had unfortunately gotten kind of dingy looking. I want to make it bright again. Any suggestions?

I would like to someday acquire an other pin to wear as a ring. Maybe one with pearls and saphires or rubies. I have learned alot on GC about getting pins from ebay so maybe I will get one for a ring soon!

Question a/b dangles

Question...
If I wasn't an ADPi at the time of the 150th, can I still get a 150th dangle?

skerbow 02-11-2004 01:21 AM

you should be able to order one.

I see nothing wrong with getting the dangle I think it is a neat one.

As for the person who said their pin was looking blah... Try either a jewelry clearner (little thing you put it in and add chemicals to it) or take it to a jeweler and many will clean it there for you.

I recommend taking it to a jeweler, especially if it has opals or pearls. These are semi precious stones and can't take the abrasiness of normal cleaners.

If you try on your own to clean it, use a gentle soap (like liquid ivory) and water with a soft toothbrush. Only use the toothbrush on the gold, use your fingers on the stones.

Sure why not?!? ADPi "turned" 150 and that is what is important! So go to Gift Mart and order it!! Orrrr do what I am doing for a dangle and giving money to someone attending DLC...even better if you are attending yourself!!

HOLY MAJOLI! THIS WAS MY 100TH POST AND I DIDN'T EVEN REALIZE IT! I'M A SENIOR MEMBER! (Would have been a long time ago if AkronADPi still worked :( )

honeychile 02-11-2004 11:42 AM

*Can't wait for my income tax refund so I can order some dangles!*

ADPiAkron 02-11-2004 11:47 AM

Shoot...she is asking if she can get the 150th dangle! I wasn't even thinking...I am getting the webmaster dangle and it is for my alumnae office and never was an office when I was a collegiate. So anyone can get a dangle for anything! haha Well....not for anything! :)

ehope 02-11-2004 05:00 PM

my pin is gold with sapphires all the way around. i'm thinking i'll need a guard because i would hate to lose it.
