TATTOOS
This question is mainly directed towards are greek members but, SF's are more than welcome to answer. How do feel about members of your sorority who get tattoos which display their sorority pride?
|
Ms. Revlon,
I would have preferred to answer this question to you directly, but your email is not given. Anyway, I have heard rumors that an overwhelming majority of BGLO women DO have tattoos, but ya just can't see 'em unless they want you ta see 'm http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif |
Speaking from a SF point of view:
I have 2 tattoos myself and I love them, in fact I am about to get another one. I have one on my chest and the other on my calf. I have no idea where to put the next one. I also have a tongue ring, but that is another story. Anywhooo, I have several friends and family members that have sorority or fraternity tattoos. Most of the men display them with pride. However I have noticed that the women almost always have them in a very inconspicous place. Perhaps there is a reason for this. What is also interesting is that of the few female friends that have more than one tattoo the only hidden one is the sorority tattoo. Makes you say hmmmmmmmmmmmmm! ------------------ "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful" When da EAST is in da house....Oh my GOD!!!! DANGER! I obviously don't have a problem with it, since I have one displaying my sorority pride. However, I don't necessarily agree with a woman getting her letters on her. But to address the placing of the tattoo, it is in a place that someone wouldn't normally notice. That's just becasue I know when I get older that's not something I would want to show. The same goes with my tongue ring (piercings are easier to hide-just take them out).

What are some of the most interesting tattoos you have seen on someone representing AKA? Me personally was one Soror had the crest with pearls and all. Can you say Ouch!!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif
|
The cutest one I've seen so far is a soror had a vine of Ivy leaves going across her lower back. It was SO cute!!

Well, mine is an ivy leaf made with pearls with a frog in the center.

Though I like tattoos, tongue rings and all manner of piercings from an aesthetic standpoint, I guess I'm old school when it comes to our sorority...I wouldn't want to see Alpha Kappa Alpha's shield, letters or identifying symbols represented in a tattoo. It's one thing if a soror puts an ivy vine in a discreet place...an "if you have to ask, then you don't need to know" sorta thing. Otherwise, I see very visible sorority tattoos as unbecoming and unecessary advertising about something that is supposed to be more lofty and less "earthy", which is what tattoos are to me.

Soror, I HATE TATTOO'S!!! All of them! And as a self contradiction, W and I do plan on having rings tattoed (SP?) on our ring fingers like the way Treach and Pep did (but our marriage will definitely last longer than theirs)...
But to answer the question, if it is placed in an area where it is not easily visible then, I guess it is ok. |

I tend to believe that different women can do different things and be viewed differently, I am one that believes I can do the tattoo thing and have it be perceived as all good.

Yeah, we should have gotten our upbringing from our momma, but unfortunately, many have not/did not. I got mine from my momma. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif
Anyway, when one enters into the land of XYZland,in OUR case, AKAland, one CONTINUES to grow, one CONTINUES to learn, one CONTINUES to become nurtured, etc. There are some things that one's mother cannot TEACH, unless she of course is a member of XYZ (AKA). http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif Understand what I'm saying? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif [This message has been edited by AKA2D '91 (edited May 14, 2001).] |

I was not responding to the TATTOO ISSUE! My comment to that is: NO COMMENT!
|
My friend who's a member has an ivy vine around her upper arm, and I think it's so cute and ultra feminine. But, I'd want something I could cover up if needed. I currently have a tattoo on my chest (u guessed it--a chocolate shake w/ whipped cream and a cherry on top w/ thicknchocolate circling it.) It's small enough to conceal even in a low cut evening gown.
|
I was thinking about getting a green frog with AKA in pink in the center, but after reading the post on mascots and doing some research I decided not to. I wanted something to represent the Sorority, a mascot that is nation wide. So, I lending towards the Ivy leaf and the twenty pearls.

I know I have resurected this thread but I have to bring this up...
I was at a function Friday and I saw a soror with a tattoo on her arm (that was the only reason I knew she was one). Her tattoo had the greek letters (which is a big no-no in DST), her line number very big and the elephant beteen the letters (if you remember what Left Eye's tattoo looked like, something simular to that). The thing that bottered me about the tattoo was the letters, because it's against national rules. Does anyone else feel this way, especially if they have the letters on it? |
I'm not greek but I have always been told you shouldn't get tattoos that spell out your letters. I know people who have brands of their letters but somehow they say that's different. Now I don't see anything wrong with getting tattoos of things like ivy's, elephants, the sphinx and so on because that could stand for anything. I think it's only seen as a major no-no when you combine your letters with it.

Unfortunately, nothnig can be done. The tattoo is there now. What impact is a comment going to have? Obviously this young lady has made her decision, either without regard for, or knowledge of the rules.
|
I can't take it....
This is an interesting thread.....
|
I am currently comtemplating a bracelet consisting of (you guessed it) 20 pearls. That way, it's easily concealed ( with a watch or bracelet) when necessary. I don't think I would get anything large or obvious. I have others and they can be concealed in a moments notice.
|
well.....
I do not like them for me but, they are cute on other people, AKA related tatoos are preference related. My best friend is a Zeta and she has her letters branded on her arm.....big ouch! it is small but you can tell what it is....

PLEASE let me know how you make out when you get it. :) |
Personally I'd rather have a tat then a brand. I just don't like the way brands look. Plus I think you can have more creative freedom with a tat. I'm actually thinking about a getting a poodle tattoed somewhere, I just don't know where yet. Prolly on my shoulder or on my thigh.
|
I know that tattoo's are disliked by many Sorors especially seasoned Sorors.Tat's w/ the Sorority's letters, or shield are frowned upon. That's why most Sorors I know w/ "AKA" tattoo's have them somewhere discreet and or have a tat that doesn't use the Sorority's letters, but other Sorors (if it can be seen) will be able to recognize them as a member.

are tats ladylike?
just kiddin i've never seen a female with a tat or brand tats seem alright for them but brands are just too tacky but wait a minute why mark up your skin when there is mad nalia to buy? u know you're an aka what u need it tatted on u for? |
Interesting post...
...Tattoos (of anything and most of all anything related to Alpha Kappa Alpha) are not for me...but I have to say live and let live on this issue.
|
When I was merely a sisterfriend:D I wanted to get a vine of Ivy leaves around my ankle, now that I am actually a member, I don't think I want to do that anymore, I might actually want to get a job when I get out of school:)...funny how things change.
