The David Bowie Appreciation Thread

I LOVE THIS MAN!!!!

Tonight, I just decided to turn off my TV and just listen to David Bowie songs for an hour or so on my computer.

Rather than list all my favorites, I'll just list what I played so far:

Time
Something in the Air
China Girl
Sorrow
Space Oddity
Breaking Glass
Modern Love
Drive in Saturday

I first started digging David Bowie after Labyrinth....the songs (to me, a seven year old) were dope....the very next music I got after the Labrinth soundtrack was the Sound & Vision boxed set. Then, the Tin Machine album.

(I can't believe I listened to all this in elementary school!)

xok85xo 01-30-2004 12:07 AM

david bowie was my first crush when i was in 2nd grade after seeing labyrinth :)

AOIIalum 01-30-2004 12:37 AM

I adore David Bowie. Sound+Vision disc 2 is sheer perfection.

Sister Havana 01-30-2004 01:36 AM

I love David Bowie too.

And I had a crush on him during the "Let's Dance" days, even though he is, technically, old enough to be my father. :D

FiReKraCkEr 01-30-2004 01:53 AM

Add me too. I heart David Bowie.

moe.ron 01-30-2004 09:04 AM

David Bowie got really good fashion sense.

Changes
-David Bowie

I still down know what I was waiting for
And my time was running wild
A million dead-end streets
Every time I thought I'd got it made
It seems the taste was not so sweet
So I turned myself to face me
But I've never caught a glimpse
Of how the others must see the faker
I'm much too fast to take that test

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Ch-ch-changes
Don't have to be a richer man
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Ch-ch-changes
Don't want to be a better man
Time may change me
But I can't trace time

I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence
So the days flow through my eyes
But the days still seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consolations
They're quite aware of what they're going through

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Ch-ch-changes
Don't tell them to grow up and out of it
Ch-ch-changes
Where's your shame
You've left us up to our necks in it
Time may change them
But you can't trace time

Strange fascination, fascinating me
Changes are taking the pace I'm going through

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Ch-ch-changes
Look out you rock 'n' rollers
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Ch-ch-changes
Pretty soon you're gonna get a little older
Time may change me
But I can't trace time

LOVE David Bowie. I saw the Glass Spider concert twice when I was a junior in high school.... He is amazing live & has an awesome voice! (Oh, and I loved Labyrinth too).

Yay for David Bowie! :)

ThetaGrrl 01-30-2004 02:06 PM

I like the one from "A Knight's Tale." I think it's called Golden Years?

ISUKappa 01-30-2004 02:10 PM

That's what's seriously missing from my music collection!! I *heart* David Bowie.

I, too, loved Labyrinth. I bet I watched it over 50 times (we had a pirated copy from the video store until a "friend" borrowed it and never returned it!!! (bitch).

You remind me of the babe
what babe
the babe with the power
what power
the power of voodoo
who do
you do
do what
remind me of the babe

Lady Pi Phi 01-30-2004 04:25 PM

I'm not a huge David Bowie fan, but I do like him.

Random fact that I learned from the DVD:

Gates McFadden, who played "Dr. Beverly Crusher" on Star Trek: The Next Generation, was a choreographer for Labyrinth. I beleive she not only choreographed the ballroom scene, but also several fights during the attack on the Goblin City.

Oh, that's so cool! I didn't not know that. I'm a big Star Trek fan too.

I know, I know...I'm a big geek! :D

LuaBlanca 01-30-2004 10:08 PM

Labrynth is full of gratuitous shots of David Bowie's crotch. :)

DGMarie 01-31-2004 01:51 AM

This morning I took my vitamins and I put my helmet on.

There is nothing wrong with gratuitous crotch shots.

There was a David Bowie magazine in Borders this weekend....one of those imports, I believe, as it costed $11.50! I would have gotten it, but I am really too broke to splurge on it.

Also at the borders was a DVD of a bunch of David Bowie videos....a lot of classic stuff! Nothing new though....in fact, did David even make any videos for his last two albums, Heathen and Reality?

midwesterngirl 02-08-2004 04:54 PM

My friend bought me David Bowie tickets for my birthday in May.I cannot wait.:D I don't mind turning a year older if this is the gift I get in exchange.

carnation 02-08-2004 05:07 PM

He's been around awhile :) --I still have his Ziggy Stardust album that I listened to nonstop spring of my senior year.

He has a little girl who's preschool age now...he was talking about her awhile back on Jay Leno. What a doting daddy!

Munchkin03 02-08-2004 05:14 PM

I love David Bowie!

Senusret I 04-08-2004 10:54 AM

I FINALLY purchased his album "Reality" and it is pretty freakin good!

Although, I must admit that I liked "Heathen" better.

GPhiLlama 04-08-2004 12:21 PM

I'm paying my respects to David Bowie in this thread.

ZeroCool 04-08-2004 04:20 PM

I love him in Zoolander. "Its a walkoff"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop star David Bowie had emergency heart surgery last month but is now out of hospital and convalescing at home with his family, his publicist says.

Bowie, 57, had emergency angioplasty surgery for a blocked artery at a hospital in Germany after seeking treatment for a pinched nerve during a concert tour, publicist Mitch Schneider said in a statement on Thursday.

Let's Dance was the jam!!! My mom was feeling that song so much that she went out and bought the 12" single! lol

KSigkid 07-09-2004 06:33 PM

Ziggy Stardust is a great album...one of my roommates sophomore year got me into some of Bowie's stuff.

Senusret I 09-27-2004 10:30 PM

Currently jammin' to some earlier, live recordings.....such songs as Sweet Thing, John I'm Only Dancing, 1984, Changes......damn, I needed this tonight!

ms_gwyn 09-28-2004 02:53 AM

I have to say that I too LOVE DB.......I "discovered" him during the Let's Dance craze also.....yummy.

He has so many great songs, but I do have to say that John I'm Only Dancing is one of my all time favorites, along with Under Pressure (with Queen, another favorite band that I "discovered" when Another Bites the Dust came out)

Senusret I 11-16-2005 08:17 PM

Bumping because I saw him in a commercial for XM Radio....he stole Snoop Dogg's bling!

JennRN 11-16-2005 09:08 PM

Rebel, rebel you tore your dress
Rebel, rebel your face is a mess, yah...

Love that song!! I put it on, turn it up loud, and jam. Then I feel like a bad-ass ( for about 3 minutes).

Labyrinth was such a good movie!! He was very good-looking in that movie.

ISUKappa 02-15-2007 03:19 PM

bump because the husband bought me Best of Bowie for Valentine's Day and I'm rockin out to it over my lunch hour.

Senusret I 02-15-2007 04:51 PM

Wonderful CD. I got it year or so ago for my birthday.

My favorite song is Queen Bitch, which was left off.

Senusret I 06-07-2007 09:31 AM

Just wanted to point out that my latest signature is from the David Bowie song "Boys Keep Swinging."

ISUKappa 06-07-2007 10:14 AM

My sister babysat the kiddo this weekend while the husband and I went to a wedding out of town and when we got back she was watching Labrynth. I love a little David Bowie in tight pants and '80s glam hair!

Sugar08 06-07-2007 10:35 AM

I was JUST gettin' down to "Fashion" this morning! :D

Senusret I 04-04-2008 01:16 PM

Cold fire, you've got everything but cold fire
You will be my rest and peace child
I moved up to take a place, near you

So tired, it's the sky that makes you feel tried
It's a trick to make you see wide
It can all but break your heart, in pieces

Staying back in your memory
Are the movies in the dark
How you moved is all it takes
To sing a song of when I loved
The Prettiest Star

One day though it might as well be someday
You and I will rise up all the way
All because of what you are
The Prettiest Star

Staying back in your memory
Are the movies in the past
How you moved is all it takes
To sing a song of when I loved
Prettiest Star

One day though it might as well be someday
You and I will rise up all the way
All because of what you are
The Prettiest Star
