Which Mascot Did Your Chapter Use?
Sorors and Sisterfriends,
Since we do not have an official mascot, which one did your chapter use? Sisterfriends, which one is used on your campus? My undergrad chapter used the mouse, but some sorors have not heard of the mouse being used before. Besides the mouse, I have heard of the frog, bunny, and the pink panther. Are there any others? |
Hello AKATUDE, I just thought I would comment on your question. I too have heard of all those mascots but the chapter at my school use a mouse to represent them. So I always get confused when others tell me they have heard of bunnies and frogs etc. |
The AKA's at my university use the mouse and the ivy leaf.
|
i see mice on their nalia
|
I see, bunnies and mice alot on their para on my campus!
|
My chapter use the frog to represent us occassionally, but for the most part we stick to the Ivy. My previous school they used the mouse.
|
My undergrad chapter used the bunny.
|
We really didn't use an animal mascot, although we were familiar with the mouse and bunny. We mainly just used the Ivy leaf.
|
Mornin' everyone!! The use of mascot (albeit unofficial) are totally regional to me. I've found that sorors back home (in the NE section of the states) use rabbit, which sorors down here (in the south) primarily use frogs. I've seen some use mice. I've also noticed the pink panther being used by sorors in the midwest and west coast. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif
Oh well...personally I've tried to stick to using the ivy leaf, but I do have several frog candles around my place! |
Akatude, most of the sorors in the Southeastern region use the frog occasionally as our mascot, but we generally stick to the ivy leaf. I have never seen the pink panther being used as a mascot and rarely mice, but I do know a few sorors up north who use the rabbit as their mascot. Check you later sorors and sisterfriends.

Mid-Atlantic here...Spr. '89
My Chapter used the Bunny.... and I still collect them to this day. We don't die we multiply!!! (used before the late Robin Harris made it famous). Since the bunny is not a global thing, I get very happy when I see it on nalia. I do not purchase anything with another mascot on it. Lately, my purchases have been of the Shield and 20 Pearl IVY. SKEE-WEE Sorors! AKAnVA Richmond,VA |
I went undergrad in the Mid-Atlantic Region and we use the mouse and Ivy Leaf to represent. It's interesting to me that AKAnVA from Richmond uses the bunny. My sister, who goes to NSU bought me a frog because the sorors on her campus use that.
|
I posted earlier and said my undergrad chapter used the bunny. My undergrad chapter is also in the Mid-Atlantic Region (NC).
|
Sorors,
I was made NC( Elon College).. Spr. 89. I love my bunnies and for some reason, frogs have even taken over a FEW of my Undergrad Soror's shelves. Well, I just let them know my history with the bunny and let it go from there. I know that chapters, regions, etc. have reasons for using certain mascots, but I will stick with my bunnies. That is what I was taught and it has stuck with me throughout the years. In a way, I am glad that we only have the Shield and the 20 Pearl Ivy, because if we had to pick an animal mascot right now, it would be a very heated debate. Soror Antwinette Richmond,VA |
The frog, but I've never heard of Pink Panther.
|
Hello All, In my chapter we justed used the ivy leaf. Now I have heard of using the bunny, and the mouse. DejA |
Okay, I know this topic is kinda old, but I have a question...I hope it's not a "forbidden" question for non-members. My mother, who has been an AKA for 20+ years and her sorors don't know anything about the unofficial mascots that are now surfacing. How/when did this "adoption" begin? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif I'm curious and so is she. If anyone can answer this I'm sure she'd appriciate it as would I.

The bunny. Great Lakes region. Mostly bunnies are used as mascots on the east coast. I recently heard of frogs but never the pink panther. Grad uses Ivy Leaf and others since the chapter is made up with different Sorors from thier under-grad days.

Our chapter basically used the Ivy Leaf; however, many sorors collect frogs. The Pink Panther has been used. I am in the SouthCentral region.

As undergraduates who were guided closely by our graduate chapter, we were discouraged from using symbols other than the ivy leaf, pink tea rose, and pearls. We were quite happy with those, although we knew other sorors used unofficial symbols. I think being a colony trying to charter a chapter at two nongreek schools had a lot to do with us not being influenced by mascots.
1babygirl2000: I don't know why or how these unofficial symbols got their starts, but I liken it to some of the things I've seen recently among my younger sorors, like making an ivy sign with your hands, doing a serious "lean" while posing for photos, and the whole "Lyle Love" term in reference to the marriage of AKA founder Ethel Hedgeman and APhiA Beta chapter founder George Lyle. These were not done when I was a new soror, but I think have grown out of peoples' desire to "jazz things up" a bit. That's my opinion, anyway. Maybe if my line sister, Captivator#6, reads the post regarding where and when did the "adoption" of these mascots come from, maybe she will ask her mother for us. Her mother, if I'm not mistaken has been a soror for 20+ years as well and pledged undergrad at a college in Virginia. Her school used the pink panther and she presented Captivator#6 with a huge Pink Panther at our probate show.
So, Babygirl, I know that these mascots have been around for quite sometime now even when your mom joined our sisterhood. But like we said before, the mascots used are unofficial and not recognized by our sorority. The only time my undergrad chapter used the mouse was on posters announcing things like our volunteer tutoring program or a "Sisters Rap" forum for the freshmen ladies. Otherwise, we used the ivy leaf and pearls. |
Thanks everyone. Your replies have been helpful. My mother, who crossed at SC State in 1976 ( I don't remember the chapter name), doesn't recall any unofficial "mascots" during that time. Neither she nor any of her sorors heard of the frog until she went to a boule a couple of years ago. Maybe it is because we lived in Germany for many years and now live in Alaska.
Again I do thank you all for your comments, they have been most helpful!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Greek Love to you all! ------------------ #1 Baby Girl Spr. 2000 Alaska Alumnae [This message has been edited by 1Babygirl2000 (edited June 07, 2000).] |
Hey Babygirl,
One of my co-workers is a soror who crossed at SC State in the mid-70's. I wish I knew which line she was on. I will not see her again until next week to be able to ask her. |
made in the NAR our chapter used the bunny http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. I do have a set of frog candles they are cute to me.
|
They may have been on the same line! Or a least know each other. You'll have to find out. I also remember that my mom's chapter name is Beta Sigma she was #7 on the '76 line.
Much Greek Love! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Quote:

See why searches are sooooo important?

Here at my college in The South Atlantic Region we use the Frog and The Ivy Leaf, but I have never seen any nalia with any mascot on it. Other than the Leaf. Which (I think) is nation wide..

My undergrand chapter uses the frog. It has been around as early as the mid 70s.

There are some older sorors who get VERY offended about the use of the frog. I went to a workshop at Regionals, and the presenter said that if we had any at home, throw them away because they do not represent Alpha Kappa Alpha. I collect frogs (cute ones), but I don't buy or accept a frog with AKA on it.
|
Here in TX most of the sorors that were "made" in 95 w/ me used bunnies. I personally fell in love with frogs and have an entire collection

Our chapter never used the unofficial mascots on anything.
We did collect bunnies, though. It was just something cute to do. I only have one frog (very recent). I don't have any mice. Considering what they mean, I don't have any objection to collecting them. It's just necessary to remember that they are NOT official. |
Greetings sorors.
This is a very interesting topic. I was initiated into a grad chapter (Alpha Delta Omega) here in Nashville and we didn't use any mascots. However, as the sponsor chapter for the undergraduate chapter at TSU, I have become acquainted with the frog as a mascot. I am originally from South Carolina and when I was younger I remember my sister, who pledged ten years ago, referencing the mouse as their mascot (she pledged at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina). I have only recently heard of the bunny and i have never heard of the pink panther. That is totally new to me. I have found myself collecting frogs, though. I don't know if the mascots are regional or not, I guess it just depends on what the chapter wants to use, even though it is unofficial. |
I wanted to bring this to the top and get different perspectives on it because I pledged grad chapter 13 years ago and we didn't have mascots, any of that. So when my sister-in-law was telling me that a young lady that she has been speaking with has her room decorated with frogs, I was a little concerned (okay, I got indignant!) - even asked my LS if they had heard anything about the frog being the mascot! Seems like years ago I remember seeing something from Nationals about the frog not being the mascot, so this frog business was a little sacriligious (sp?), if you get my drift. I'm still a little old school with not wanting to collect frogs, bunnies, etc. But with the different postings, now I see where everyone is coming from. Thanks for the imput Sorors Sahara and PearlEssence08! :)

Mascots
Yes...it does change from region to region (the mascot that people 'claim').....However, we should only be using the official items.
I must admit...we had heard about everything thing down at Dillard when I was there....and I was just as guilty of having a few; however, the older I get I see and understand more and more of why we should follow our national mandates. |
I came in in 1990 and was out of the "loop" for so long that when I started seeing all of this frog stuff, etc., all I could do was scratch my head. I felt funny asking about it so I waited and asked a Soror who is a double-legacy. She asked both her mother and her grandmother and they too answered... ? It has taken a while to get used to the idea, but I think I'm liking the frog thing. It can tie-in in that little frogs reside in the damp shade of thick, healthy ivy. I don't know about the rabbit and mouse, though.
