College Dorms. . .A Few Questions
Last night reminded me of dorm life and the rules.
I know we have threads where we identify if we went to a PWI or an HBCU but refresh my memory when you respond. DORM LIFE: 1. Did your school(s) have single sex dorms? co-ed? combo? 2. Did you all have a visitation policy? What was it? 3. Did you live in SS or Co-ed dorms? Why (if you had a choice)? 4. Did you sneak folks in and out? 5. Did you have roommates? Do you still keep in touch with them? Reminisce about dorm life. Funny moments? Outrageous moments? |
Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio http://www.wittenberg.edu
1. Did your school(s) have single sex dorms? co-ed? combo? We had one single sex dorm called Hanley, but it was connected to 2 co-ed dorms. The rest of the dorms were all co-ed. Ferncliff was co-ed by floor. The 3rd floor was 1/2 male and 1/2 female. 2. Did you all have a visitation policy? What was it? Yes. Visitation of opposite sex in your rooms was over at midnight on Mondays - Thursdays or maybe Sundays - Thursdays. Fridays and Saturdays, no opposite sex in your room after 2:00a.m. We had nightguards where you had to sign your company in and out. Nightguards were on duty from 9 - 4a.m. I worked that job 2 weeks and quit. 3. Did you live in SS or Co-ed dorms? Why (if you had a choice)? Freshman year -- Woodlawn Hall which was connected to South and Hanley. Woodlawn was substance free. Sophomore and Junior year -- Ferncliff. 4. Did you sneak folks in and out? Of course I did. :D 5. Did you have roommates? Do you still keep in touch with them? Freshman year -- Rachael, she pledged Delta Zeta. (NO) Sophomore -- Jelynn (YES, this is my road dawg) Junior -- lived alone Senior #1 -- apt with Stephanie (every now and again) and Shondraye (no) |
From ym HBCU perspective...
1. Did your school(s) have single sex dorms? co-ed? combo?
We had one dorm that was co-ed (one floor was male, another floor was female, etc.). This lst for two years and the university got rid of it. Now, all dorms are either all-male or all-female. 2. Did you all have a visitation policy? What was it? Yes. We had visitation hours from 9am - 11pm during the week and I think until 12 or 1 am on Friday and Saturday. Sometimes, during the late hours of the night, our Dorm director (or Housing director) would do surprise "room checks" . If you were taking visitors of the opposite sex up to your room, you had to sign them in at the front desk and escort them. Didn't matter if it was your dad, brother, cousin, or boyfriend. Anyone could come and hang out in the lobby. 3. Did you live in SS or Co-ed dorms? Why (if you had a choice)? Single sex dorm because we had no choice. 4. Did you sneak folks in and out? Yep. Shoot I was grown! *lol* :p 5. Did you have roommates? Do you still keep in touch with them? Yes. I still keep in touch with my old roomates. Except for my very first college roommate. She was GHETTO as all get out! She was a big girl, with BLOND hair and wore these (literally) Coke-bottle thick glasses!! Just to give yall a visual, picture Robin Harris with blond hair and some thick glasses like Sophia from The Golen Girls. And y'all she talked EXACTLY liked Sha-na-na, I'm not playing. And of course she thought I was not "black enough" since I spoke standard english and due to other superficial stuff (long hair, skin tone, etc.). Ohhhh, the fall semester couldn't end fast enough! Ol' Heffa!  |

1. co-ed 2. mighta had one, I dunno. 3. co-ed. scenery was muuch better  4. didn't have to sneak 5. yes, my two best friends that I'd known since 3rd grade. Yep, we still holla fairly regularly. quick funny story...freshman year we lived in a quad (4 guys. me and my 2 buddies and Ted, from Appalachia). One night, about midnight, I wake up, having to go to the bathroom, but I notice the lump in the bunk above me (Ted's bed) is bigger for some reason. Then I start to hear noises, yes...THEM noises. I'm like "No, he is not sexing this girl in the room with 3 other dudes." But, yes, he was. Anyway, I'm laying there, trying to wait for "matters to conclude" but I gotta go. Finally, I'm like "if they freaky enough to get down w/ 3 people in the room, why am I trippin?" So I stand up (putting me right at eye level w/ the festivities--not a pretty sight at all) and say "hey, what's up?" ...when I returned to the room, Ellie Mae, (Ted's woman), was gone. Ted almost got his a$$ kicked a couple other times that quarter over things and moved out at quarter's end. |
College: Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University
1. Did your school(s) have single sex dorms? co-ed? combo? All of the dorms at FAMU are single sex. Black parents don't really like the idea of little Keisha living alone for the first time with a man right next door. There are apartments on campus and the individual apartments are same sex as well while the buildings are not. Even then, the opposite sex is not allowed anywhere but in the living room and kitchen. P.S. Despite the rules, there is a member of the opposite sex in the dorms at all times. 2. Did you all have a visitation policy? What was it? The opposite sex was allowed to visit in the lobby of the dorms until midnight. Like I said, they were upstairs in the rooms too. There were several times when boys spent the night at my neighbors' rooms. 3. Did you live in SS or Co-ed dorms? Why (if you had a choice)? Only girls in my dorm and I had no choice. 4. Did you sneak folks in and out? Boyfriend came up to my room two or three times. Some nights it was just too cold to go outside to see him. 5. Did you have roommates? Do you still keep in touch with them? I still live with my roommate from my freshman year. We live in the same house but we only see each other about twice a week. I am not here that often and when I am, it's in the daytime when she's at class. |
1. SS, there is a co-ed dorm on campus NOW.
2. Periodically. When we were allowed, it was on Saturdays and Sundays. Did I have a "visitor"? NOPE. :p 3. SS 4. Hell Naw! 5. Yep. Only one...she was my linesister and we were roomies in our off campus apartment (so I guess that doesn't count). :D |
Re: College Dorms. . .A Few Questions
I will answer by school since I was a dorm dweller @ Kent State (a PWI) and Central State (an HBCU)

Cornell University
DORM LIFE: Did your school(s) have single sex dorms? co-ed? combo? All of the above. Single sex, co-ed by floor, co-ed by section or suite, and co-ed by room. 2. Did you all have a visitation policy? What was it? You had to be let in the building by someone who lived in the building. All of the buildings were locked. I cannot remember if the all girls dorm had a restriction on overnight male guests (not that it would have deterred anything!) 3. Did you live in SS or Co-ed dorms? Why (if you had a choice)? The dorm I lived in (when I lived in a dorm) was co-ed by section. I was placed there as a freshman and stayed for sophomore year. I was also assigned there as an RA my junior year. 4. Did you sneak folks in and out? No need. Only reason to sneak is nosey classmates in ya bidness! 5. Did you have roommates? Do you still keep in touch with them? Alas, my dorm was almost all singles. A little isolating as a new freshman but heavebnly after the first month!! I did have three roommates in a 4 bedroom off campus apartment my senior year. Of those roommates- Ayo- talk all the time, Tamika- yes, Vanessa- once every blue moon. Reminisce about dorm life. Funny moments? Outrageous moments? Most of my closest girlfriend from college were the other Black women assigned to my dorm my year and the year after. We had a ball running back and forth to each other's rooms. I will have to think about and come up with some dorm stories. |
Re: College Dorms. . .A Few Questions
Quote:
1. Since Spelman is an all girls school, all dorms were single sex of course 2. Yes indeedie on the visitation policy and we had a CURFEW freshman year. Freshman curfew was 12 midnght Sunday - Thursday and 2:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights first semester. 2nd semester there was no weekend curfew but still the weekday curfew. Visitation was something like 6 p.m. -10 p.m Monday through Friday and longer on the weekend. Can't remember. There wa no visitation until after Labor Day. (Most folks were on campus about 2 weeks earlier) That first day visitation was like a HOLIDAY! Folks were happy!! LOL We had to do that whole, sign a guy in, announce "man on the hall" when they came down a hall. WE were also supposed to leave our doors open when we had visitors. 3. see above 4. NEVAH Spelman didn't play and I wasn't about the tell my parents I got kicked out fo school for having some random Negro in my dorm after hours. I snuck (is that a word??) in my share of dorms at Morehouse (Graves, Roberts, Mays, DuBois he he he) and Clark (Brawley--only male dorm) though. he he he 5. Freshman year roomie is still a very close friend. She was a bridesmaid in my wedding. Had a single sophomore year, and a double junior year (I did not get a roommate until the week before Thanksgiving because my roomie did not come back to school. )New roomie graduated in December so I lived with her for all of 3 week. Haven't spoken to her since. Sr. year lived off campus with a good friend. We are still very close. Matter of fact I just had a 3 hour conversation with her on Saturday (she's in Japan) I'm her oldest son's godmother and she was matron of honor in my wedding. So many funny memories...I'll just do Freshman year. Fast walking "the gautlet" coming from a party at Morehouse at 1:55 then taking off running as soon as we were out of sight of the guys. The gautlet was guys standing out side of Spelman's gate to check out the freshman and tease us about curfew. "I know you look cute, but you better take off them shoes and run you are going to miss curfew" Waterballon and water gun fight through the entire dorm. We even got the RD involved! LOL Late night coversations with my girls (cause we had a curfew we couldn't go anywhere) Morehouse's homecoming was on the Saturday that you "fall back" my freshman year. Girls tried to be slick and say that since it was never 2 a.m. in the first place they could really stay out until 3 a.m., when it was "really" 2. Me and several girls (who were obviously hatin' cause we didn't have anywhere to go!) sat in the lobby laughing as they got busted. Alas, Spelman no longer has a curfew and it pains my heart to see girls hanging out at the "back gate" as we called it back then in the wee hours of the morning. Johnnetta Cole did a lot for Spelman but that was one of the worst. |
1. Did your school(s) have single sex dorms? co-ed? combo?
We had all co-ed dorms, some dorms had single sex sections and then in the dorm I stayed in guys lived right across the hall 2. Did you all have a visitation policy? What was it? No visitation policy... justcouldn't have company more than three days 3. Did you live in SS or Co-ed dorms? Why (if you had a choice)? lived in co-ed all of our dorms were co-ed 4. Did you sneak folks in and out? Nope didn't have to sneak 5. Did you have roommates? Do you still keep in touch with them? I had roommates 2.5 out of my 3.5 years of undergrad and we occasionally speak on the phone and see each other at events |

!. I attended UNCGreensboro. We had SS and Co-ed dorms 2 We had no visitation policy..24 hour visitation 3. I lived in a co-ed dorm. Me and my roommate had girls living beside us 4. Didn't have to 5. My roommate is my best friend. We keep in touch on the regular even though he has moved back to his hometown near Charlotte. My roommate was a drunk(lol) I didn't drink and he used to get drunk and I was always dragging him from outside(after he had passed out on the stoop). We also had some wild white boys on our floor so they were always into something..apartment living was when it got crazy..nut I'll stick to the topic |
Re: College Dorms. . .A Few Questions
Attended USC, very PWI, 1982-1986.
DORM LIFE: 1. Did your school(s) have single sex dorms? co-ed? combo? USC had a combination of single-sex and co-ed dorms. 2. Did you all have a visitation policy? What was it? I don't recall. Senility is setting in. :p 3. Did you live in SS or Co-ed dorms? Why (if you had a choice)? I lived in a co-ed dorm my freshman year, and a women's dorm in my sophomore year. My last two years, I lived in a co-ed, apartment complex owned by the university. 4. Did you sneak folks in and out? Hell naw. 5. Did you have roommates? Do you still keep in touch with them? I'm not in touch w/any of my roommates. They ran the gamut: Asian, white and AfAm (from the South Side of Chicago) with brassy blond hair. Reminisce about dorm life. Funny moments? Outrageous moments? I was a very mellow child and don't have many outrageous moments. Except when this skinny dude I'd invited in (very out of character) tried to grind me and I was scurred...:p |
Re: College Dorms. . .A Few Questions

1. We have an all male dorm Brown street hall, two all female dorms Sisler and Ritchie halls, one dorm that was coed by floor Orr Hall, Gallucci, Grant, Spanton and Bulger are coed halls, and The townhouses we coed by house. 2. I don't really remember the visitation policy. I should since I worked at the front desk my freshman year! However working at the front desk during late night I saw all the creeping and sneaking!!! ;) 3. My first year and last year on campus I stayed in a same sex dorm. I had a choice but they completely disregarded what I selected! 4. Of course that's what you should do in school, Right?!?! We even went as far as hiding people in closets, under beds in hamper in the shared floor bathroom. We were just bad! 5. For half the school year I had a roommate however she came from a catholic school and started experimenting with drugs and stuff. Plus she kept locking me out of the room when the B*&^% new I was next door! So the remainder of the year I moved down the hall in a room by myself. I keep in touch with a few of my floor mates who I have become good friends with. I work with one of my floor mates right now. |
@ the Best HBCU in the world....
1. We now have four co-ed dorms and it is a good possibility two more will be co-ed by 2006.
2. We are supposed to sign folks in but... 3. I started in the single sex dorm and was one of the first to move into a co-ed dorm. The best thing in the world. 4. I'm a GROWN ASS MAN who lives in the dorm... there is no such thing as sneaking folks in. 5. Lets see... Freshman year.. one roommate... we still cool. Both of us are doing big things around here. Sophomore year... one roommate... still cool, he's the RA where I stay now (can I say I get benefits ). Junior year... two roommates... the first one is a real good friend of mine but I don't see him that much anymore. When we do speak its all good. Everybody and there mama know I don't like my second roommate and they know why too... bia bia! Senior year... one roommate... didn't move in until about two weeks before homecoming.... I am hardly in the room because all my jobs and OBLIGATIONS keep me busy. We talk, but I don't know him as well as I knew the first three that I'm still cool with. Because I still live on campus with all the other Grown & Sexy people trying to stay on campus, I have taken an oath not to incriminate myself or anyone else currently or whom is in the process of thinking about staying on campus.:D LOL @ TonyB though... had that been on certain parts of my camus, the response would have been to acknowledge that you were looking with a grin and they would have kept on going. LOL at the rest of ya'll... I'm about to go out in the hallway to see what I can get into. |
Re: Re: College Dorms. . .A Few Questions

1. Did your school(s) have single sex dorms? co-ed? combo? Uh, Spelman 2. Did you all have a visitation policy? What was it? Yep. guys were allowed in dorms from 6-11, 2 men per student. So, no more than 4 men in a room at any given time. They had to sign in and out. 3. Did you live in SS or Co-ed dorms? Why (if you had a choice)?N/A 4. Did you sneak folks in and out?Not my steelo...but some heffas did. In the process leaving the back door ajar (not cute, I was on the ground floor fresh year) 5. Did you have roommates? Do you still keep in touch with them? Yep, same one all four years. She's PearlEssence (who's never on here). She's my bestest friend. Talk to her often. |
School: Penn State Univ
1. Did your school(s) have single sex dorms? co-ed? combo? I believe there was one co-ed dorm when I was there, probably more now. At the time, most of the dorms were single sex, the apartments (usually jr/seniors) were single sex apts in a co-ed bldg 2. Did you all have a visitation policy? What was it? I have no idea what the "official" policy was. I lived in a basement room and just opened the side door to let my (or floormates) guests in. I think you had to show ID after hours to say you were a student but if you were with a dorm resident you weren't stopped. Most of the times issues came up if one roommate had a boyfriend who always came over but it was usually up to the RA to mediate. 3. Did you live in SS or Co-ed dorms? Why (if you had a choice)? Single sex, my mom was not havin it any other way... 4. Did you sneak folks in and out? Yes, (see #2)..although it was just out of laziness not to go up to the front door...we didn't have dorm checks like my friends told me about at HBCU's or a curfew 5. Did you have roommates? Do you still keep in touch with them? Keep in touch with roomie from freshman year (she was a Jr), NO to sloppy sue from soph year, after that I lived alone in a single and then off campus. I also keep up with my floor mates... Reminisce about dorm life. Funny moments? Outrageous moments? Watching the Mifflin Streak (all the men from this one dorm in the middle of finals week would run through the quad buck naked)....seeing who was creeping with whom when ever there was a fire drill....hiding in the closet when we were too tired to even be bothered (or it was too cold) for a freaking fire drill, being so excited that I won a call in radio contest and sharing the grand prize w/roommate and floor mates (a foot long hoagie :D ), gearing up for the fight on Thursdays...we had to take shifts in the rec room from early in the afternoon to keep the tv all day so we could watch Cosby/A Different World (I forget what the white girls wanted to watch..but it was one of many things that was divided by race at the time) |

Hampton Universty (The Real HU!!!) 1. When I was there they had a one coed dorm.. The first three floors were male the rest were female. 2. Yep the visitation policy was from 7 to 11 weekdays and I think midnight on weekends. 3. I lived in a single sex dorm because I was too lazy to turn in the early housing lottery application. 4. Of course I did! Junior year I was an RA 24 hour visitation!! and Senior year I stayed in a dorm with no desk sitter! ;) 5. yep, I keep in touch with my roomate from freshman year. I remember my sophomore year I stayed in a dorm with an intercom system. If someone did not bring their "guest" down in time the Desk person would call the persons full name and room number and tell them it is time to bring their guest downstairs. How embarassing... needless to say I didn't have any guests my sophomore year. |

Why (if you had a choice)? Freshman year -- Myers Hall, honors dorm, co-ed Sophomore -- Ferncliff, co-ed. Why? It was an upperclassmen dorm. Also, my current manfriend lived there that same year. It was cool to be in the same dorm. 4. Did you sneak folks in and out? No. I snuck in and out of his room. :D 5. Did you have roommates? Do you still keep in touch with them? Freshman thru Senior year #1 -- Janae. Yes, she is my spec and I was a bridesmaid in her wedding. We were friends before Witt. Senior #2 -- Keesha (Beauty08). Yes, she is my LS.:D Also, Michelle. She is a soror, but we don't keep in touch. |
School: Lincoln University (PA) and Temple University
1. Did your school(s) have single sex dorms? co-ed? combo? All co-ed dorms at Temple. Mostly single-sex at Lincoln. 2. Did you all have a visitation policy? What was it? 24-hour visitation at Temple. SERIOUS visitation policy at Lincoln. The only 2 weekends at Lincoln that were 24 hour visitation were Homecoming (Fall) and Punk Rock (Blue & White weekend-Spring). Any other time, visitation ended at 10 or 11 Sunday-Thursday, and 2am on Friday and Saturday. 3. Did you live in SS or Co-ed dorms? Why (if you had a choice)? Didn't really have a choice at either school. Lincoln-Single sex. Temple-Co-ed dorm, single-sex floors. 4. Did you sneak folks in and out? No need to sneak at Temple. Lincoln? HECK YEAH!!! It got to be a pain in both situations though. At Temple, there were many times where you may run into a guy in your floor bathroom at 3 in the morning because he was too lazy to go upstairs to the men's floor to use the bathroom. Plus, you would hear doors slamming and people in the halls all times of night. You could never really look bummy because you never knew who you were going to run into on your floor. At Lincoln, I lived on the ground floor near the back door that was always used as the sneak door! Once in a blue the alarm would be on. If you know anything about Lincoln, it is out in the middle of nowhere, and the dorm that I lived in was right next to the soccer field, so whenever someone would prop open the back door to let people in, all kinds of bugs, worms, mice and whatever would come crawling in the building. It was quite disgusting! I will never forget the "surprise" room checks after curfew. Man! That was always a comedic site! You would see guys falling from the windows in their boxers with their girls throwing their clothes out after them. My roomates had to go through that mess too. I used to go home every weekend, so every Monday morning when I came back, the roommate I had 1st semester would have a new man in her bed. EVERY WEEKEND! And let's not talk about the empty 40 bottles and blunts laying around. Needless to say, I would kick him out and cuss her out as soon as I stepped in the door at 6 in the morning. Let's not even talk about the weekend I came back and she had re-arranged the room with both of our dressers down the middle of the floor serving as the dividing line. Man! I could not wait for 2nd semester! That's when I got a new roommate! She wasn't as trifling, but she had her ways about her too. Ahh...Dear Lincoln...Dear Lincoln... 5. Did you have roommates? Do you still keep in touch with them? I've gone through my share of roommates at Lincoln and at Temple. I had 2 roommates at Lincoln. You can read about the 1st one in the previous paragraph. Pure drama! She was a spoiled rich chick from New York. Boarding School all her life. So she was probably used to acting out. We actually became friends after I moved across the hall. LOL I left Lincoln after my 1st year, so I wasn't even trying to keep in contact with her. My 2nd roommate was from DC. She was cool. We both sang and we were in the gospel ensemble together. I still see her ex-boyfriend once in a blue-he's here in Philly. We had our issues also, but we got along better. I keep in touch with a few people who know her and I ask how she's doing, but that's the extent. I lived in the dorms and commuted at Temple. The 1st year I lived in the dorms, my roommate was one of my childhood best friends. It was a good idea at first. We got along, but we learned quickly that we just should have never been roommates. It's like that sometimes. We still see each other on the regular. The 2nd and last semester I ever lived on campus, I was thrown into a suite with the 2 roommates from hell! They were mad that I got placed in their suite 2 weeks before the semester started. We spoke on the phone and it was cool. But once we started living together? Pure hell on earth! I was hardly ever there because I had a work study job, an internship at a local radio station and a full load of classes. Plus, I had a car. However, the time I did spend there was HORRENDOUS! They didn't want me to have any male company in the suite. However, their men took up permanent residence. They would use up all of my toilet paper and never replace it. They even went as far as to hide their silverware in my cabinets and then blame me for stealing it-then reported me to the RA for stealing. I was like why the heck would I steal your Dollar Store crap? I'm never here! I even tried to be nice to them. I would bring them things from the radio station. My granny would send back extra food to share with them. Needless to say, my kindness was look at as a weakness. I just wanted peace in my home. I reported all of this to the RA on my floor and nothing happened. I took it as far as the RD, and all the RD said was, wait it out. WAIT IT OUT MY EYE! They tried to place me in another suite-this time with 5 other girls and I would have had the top bunk! I don't do bunk beds-period. So what did I do? I called my girl, told her to get her mom's truck and hightail it to my dorm. Yup...I sat outside with all of my things. As soon as my girl and her brother got there, I loaded up my car and her truck and home I went. The RD even came outside and asked me where I was going. I told her home. She was like why? I told her because she doesn't care about her residents. That was the end of college campus living for me. I commuted for the rest of my time at Temple. Can you tell I'm still bitter? LOL Reminisce about dorm life. Funny moments? Outrageous moments? I think I covered the outrageous moments in the above-mentioned paragraphs. Funny moments? Too many to recall. Dorm life was a trip. |

school: NYU 1. Did your school(s) have single sex dorms? co-ed? combo? nah. its mixed in all the dorms, and all the floors. of course more girls than guys (its like 60:40 female:male here). i've always lived next door to guys, and not an issue. theyre actually talking about having coed rooms--i draw the line there! 2. Did you all have a visitation policy? What was it? just sign the person in. if you were signing in another nyu student, they can sign themselves out when they leave. RAs have priveleges to walk through any dorm (we have 16 dorms i think) b/c they have special IRHC housing stickers. we can have overnight guests up to 6 nites a semester, but they really dont count like that, since theyres like 1100 residents. can sign in 3 ppl at a time. 3. Did you live in SS or Co-ed dorms? Why (if you had a choice)?this wuestion doesnt apply, b/c we dont have SS dorms. we've got traditional and apartment style. singles, doubles, quads, quints combinations, and penthouses (11 ppl in one place, but its 2 floors. its like real world style in them pieces!) 4. Did you sneak folks in and out? only if you were over the sign in limit, but you could always find someone to sign others in for you. and NYU security are tight, so we dont play. 5. Did you have roommates? Do you still keep in touch with them? i have 2 roommates now (im surviving!) and 2 roommates last year. i keep in touch with one of them, we're really cool. p.s.: (+) personal bathrooms! :D another thing ill miss when i head south...communal bathrooms! lemme grab my flipflops and towel. :( |
Howard University DORM LIFE:
1. Did your school(s) have single sex dorms? co-ed? combo? Slow hall was co-ed. I think the atheletic dorms were co-ed too. The freshman dorms were single sex. But I stayed in this dorm called Meridian. It was co-ed and it was so much fun. Fun, fun, fun. It was fun because having visitors wasn't a problem. 2. Did you all have a visitation policy? What was it? All visitors had to have identification. Visitation was over at certain hours. Can't remember times. 3. Did you live in SS or Co-ed dorms? Why (if you had a choice)? After freshman year I lived in a co-ed dorm (by choice) because I wanted to live like normal folk. After Meridian, I found an apartment off campus. 4. Did you sneak folks in and out? In and out. 5. Did you have roommates? Do you still keep in touch with them? I had a roommate freshman year and that was it. Not even the whole freshman year because the girl left. I was very fortunate. I do remember hogging the hallway payphone. The kitchen was filthy. Oodles of noodles was typically on the dinner menu because I couldn't cook. I ate so much of it. Today I won't touch the stuff. I don't know, college life was fantastic. Edited to add an outrageous moment: Freshman Year (living in the quad), I made my boyfriend, who came all the way from NY, wear a wig in order to sneak him in. It was very cold out. He stayed in my room the entire week. That was totally outrageous. |

2. we had 24-hour visitation. in the towers, we had to sign our guests in but not in the other dorms. 3. see q#1 4. there was no need to sneak since we had 24-hour visitation 5. i'm still cool with my roommate from freshman year but we don't really keep in touch since we graduated. we had kinda lost touch when she pledged a.k.a. and i pledged delta. but we're still cool. sophomore year, my roommate was my best friend from high school and we still keep in touch. my roommate from my junior year--nah, we don't keep in touch. then my roommate from my senior year is my line sister (my #4) so we still keep in touch. my roommate from my junior year was quite an experience. she was a freshman and although her house was 15 minutes away, her parents were unable to let her go. she had to check in with them for EVERYTHING!! one friday she decided to go out with her best friend and spend the night at her house. she asked me to lie to her mother when she called. not wanting to do that, i just didn't answer the phone while i was there. of course it kept ringing so i turned the ringer off when i went to sleep. i awoke at 7 a.m. the next monday (saturday) by someone bamming on my door. when i went to answer the door, i noticed that there were 14 messages on the answering machine. who was at the door? her father!! he had been all around the campus looking for her. he went to her on-campus job looking for her. he had been checking trash cans for her body. i could tell that he was an emotional wreck and i was pissed because it was 7 in the morning!! i told him i didn't know where she was. he left me his number if i heard from her. i went back to bed. about 2 hours later, someone is barging through my door. who the hayle is running up in my room? an r.a. and a campus police officer!! he's questioning me like i did something to the girl. i was like "look, i don't know where the hell she is but i don't appreciate ya'll barging in here like ya'll crazy." they leave. now the phone is ringing off the hook. her mother keeps calling. i left for 5 minutes and she had called 7 times!! then another call comes in and i thought it was my roommate from the voice. i was like "you need to call home because your people keep calling here." well, it was her cousin and when she realized i thought she was my roommate, she played along to get the info. then she tells me that it isn't her, she's on her way to the school to check the library and in the meanwhile, she wants me to call the police. then i had to go ahead and tell them, "don't do all that. i don't know where she is but she went out last night with her best friend." you know that they didn't believe me because "that isn't the type of thing she would do." when the girl finally got to her parents house, all of her relatives were there praying and burning candles. when she came back to the room, i cursed her out and told her not to ever pull that mess again because her family is nuts!!!! |

Oh my lawd. Oh and to edit my own response to #4. . .I only snuck in one person, my ex who was a Marine and it wasn't really sneaking. The person who had nightguard duty that night was cool peeps and she knew that I never walked people out the front door because our dorm (Ferncliff) had other doors. I don't want you all to think that CT4 got down like that. I was in the library most nights til it closed. :) |

1. We had SS and co-ed dorms 2. You had to sign your visitors in, escort them if they went anywhere other than to your room or suite and escort them out. 3. Fresh yr: single sex, Moma Brown was not having me in a co-ed dorm. But that was cool because the guys dorm was a hop/skip/jump away Soph yr: Crazy roommate (didn't know it at the time) and I wanted to live in a co-ed dorm but we had a lottery type system and we didn't get picked to live there. So, single sex Junior/Senior yr: I moved off campus to avoid crazy roommate problems. 4. No, I was too scared of getting caught! 5. Fresh yr: roommate was my best friend middle school-high school. BIG MISTAKE... we are cool with each other when we run into each other. Soph yr: We Dont keep in touch. Junior yr: I moved off campus thinking things would be better. I moved into a private residence hall, 3 melanin challenged girls and me. I was friends with one of the girls but the other had serious issues....she was in love with her 2nd cousin. We don't keep in touch. Senior yr: moved into off campus student apartments. I do better living on my own, much less drama. Only thing about dorm life, think someone mentioned it before.... fire drills and having to go outside in the middle of the night during one or hiding in the closet until the drill was over then acting like nothing happened. Seeing who was with who during the drills....making sure you combed your hair and looked half decent before going outside because you never knew who you'd run into. |
Re: College Dorms. . .A Few Questions
1. Did your school(s) have single sex dorms? co-ed? combo?
My school had only single sex dorms. 2. Did you all have a visitation policy? What was it? Yes. The "Open House" policy was something ridiculous like 6-10 p.m. on Thurs., 6-11 p.m. on Sat., and 6-8 p.m. on Sun. Last I heard (about two+ yrs ago), Open House had been extended to every night. 3. Did you live in SS or Co-ed dorms? Why (if you had a choice)? Single sex--No choice 4. Did you sneak folks in and out? I never did sneak anyone in. The girls' dorms were like Fort Knox. We had around the clock security and overnight desk attendents. All the doors had alarms and the rooms on the first floors had little windows (that no human could reach or fit through without getting caught) or they were rigged to only open enough that they wouldn't get sited for a fire hazard. On the other hand, I did sneak into the boys' dorms on occasion. No one cared what they did. You would have to sneak into the dorm and break up some stairs (like "No Drawers" was talking about). The disgusting part was if you had a friend that lived on the fourth floor or above. You would be panting like a dog once you reached the room. 5. Did you have roommates? Do you still keep in touch with them? I had a roommate for two semesters. After that, I had private rooms for the rest of my stay. |
Hey everyone! I have one year yet to go, but I had to get in on this one!
Fisk University and Chestnut Hill College 1. Fisk was single sexed ( when I attended) and CHC is still single sexed (we recently went co-ed) 2. Fisk-vistation policy---HA! The only vistation we had was in the lounge on the 1st floor and you were WATCHED! CHC-pretty lenient policy: 3pm-3am 3. I lived in a single-sexed dorm-had no choice! 4. @ Fisk- Did we sneak folks in and out.....DID WE? YEEEEES! My RA's room was right next door; we would hold our fingers to the peep hole and sneak the guys in. Some girls had men over for weekends, sneaking them in and out! I also did my fare share of sneaking into the guy dorms...12mid, out by 5am! We got fined if we were caught! My roommate and best friend was bold enough to go earlier-she would wear big sweats, a baseball cap, and stroll like a dude....she pulled it off! I was too small and prissy to act like a dude..lol 5. After I transferred from Fisk-my roommate and I have still remained the best of friends. I still visit Fisk (I am a true FISKITE!),a nd we are planning to go to Germany this summer! Geez..i miss those days...... |
I attend Central Michigan University currently...
1. Did your school(s) have single sex dorms? co-ed? combo? Both single sex and Co-ed dorms 2. Did you all have a visitation policy? What was it? Only between you and your roommates do you want guys over and on what days or times. 3. Did you live in SS or Co-ed dorms? Why (if you had a choice)? Both. My fist year I lived in a SS dorm. Now I live in a Co-Ed dorm. If I had to chose I would chose CO-ED because the SS dorm got robbed alot. 4. Did you sneak folks in and out? No need. You can have whomever you want over as long as its okay with your roommates 5. Did you have roommates? Do you still keep in touch with them? I have three roommates but we all have our own bedrooms. |
Oh lawd!! ya'll taking me back with this one! I couldn't help but reply!
DORM LIFE: @ the College with the #1 marching band in the land...Bethune-Cookman College! 1. Did your school(s) have single sex dorms? co-ed? combo? **Before I begin, i was recruited HARD to come across the country to attend BCC. The showed me where I was going to stay (honors dorms) but NEVER told me there was a curfew for freshmen. 11pm on weekdays, and 1am on weekends. Now, I'm in Daytona Beach, Florida...what club do you know of that closes before 1am???!!! At the club they used to give us the 15, 10, and 5 minute warning to get back to the dorms. The DJ would stop the music and point out all the freshmen and tell us how much time we had before curfew. How embarassing! (as if we didn't look like freshmen!) **We had SS rooms, and there was NO WAY they would EVER have co-ed rooms. And to make matters worse, male and female dorms were on opposite sides of the campus, so if you were out late night on the wrong side of campus, security knew what you were up to, and escorted you BACK to your side! 2. Did you all have a visitation policy? What was it? **We could have visitors in the LOBBY ONLY until 11pm. 3. Did you live in SS or Co-ed dorms? Why (if you had a choice)? **I lived in SS (no choice!) 4. Did you sneak folks in and out? ** Oh, no! I came to the conclusion that there was no man worth me getting kicked out of school for (which would happen if you got caught). 5. Did you have roommates? Do you still keep in touch with them? **I had a roommate my freshman year who was what we used to call a "holy roller" at the time. She was saved, sanctified, and filled with the holy ghost! I felt so bad about not being as "saved" as her, that I would go to my friends room to get changed for the club! **I had a roommate my junior year as well that was nasty. she was a 4.0 student, but her side of the room was junky, and I found moldy stuff near her bed...just gross! I do keep up with my roommate from my freshmen year. Reminisce about dorm life. Funny moments? Outrageous moments? My sophomore year I had my own room, so my friends would come down to my room and get thier last minute primp-on since my room was right next to the exit. One day, my homegirl obviously still sleepy, decides to freshen up her breath before she goes to class, and ends up gargling with seabreeze (the astringent)!! We picked at her for a couple of weeks after that one! URL=http://www.cookman.edu]www.cookman.edu[/URL] |
Hey everybody...just thought I'd give the perspective for someone who's in it now. I am at University of Maryland- College Park. Neway....
1) My school has single sex and co-ed. I live co-ed, but I don't think there's an all guys dorm  who knows why 2) Visitation policy?? Are you serious?!? People come and go all they want...I wish they could tell me who could visit me and when....lol 3) co-ed 4) n/a 5) I got a new roomate mid-semester...thank God!! She's definitely a lot better. **I guess I can reminisce to a couple months ago** The first thing is that as soon as I was freed from the prison of my house, I stayed out LATE, like 6am. Not that I was doing anything, but I could!! Now, of course I still stay out, but the novelty is gone. Another thing is that my first roomate would talk sooooo much. She was one of those people where I would be sitting at my computer and reading outloud, or doing something where I was CLEARLY concentrating and she would NOT SHUT UP!!! Oh well, some just can't take a hint! |
i know this is a part of college (black or otherwise) history, but what is the deal with all the curfews and SS dorms? i mean, has it proven to be better for college living and/or learning? and esp if u live close to a metro area, the club aint even jumpin til 1am! thats just me.
it sounds real old school to me. maybe i take how nyu operates for granted  i mean, do they really come by and check your beds to see if ur back by 11pm? thats some bs. what if ur up late or the library? or something. no breathin room. |
