Any sushi lovers here?

Mmmm, I can't go a week without having sushi. I had eel sushi for the first time last night and it was darn good. The wasabi sauce just about cleared all my sinuses :D

adpialumcsuc 01-28-2004 07:38 PM

MMMMM I love sushi

aephi alum 01-28-2004 07:42 PM

Sushi is your friend! :D My favorite is Philadelpha maki - smoked salmon and cream cheese, mmmmm...

I'm low-carbing right now, but that hasn't kept me away from the sashimi :)

mullet81 01-28-2004 07:43 PM

i stick to the simple things like... California rolls, spicy tuna rolls, Boston Rolls

Unregistered- 01-28-2004 07:53 PM

Ewwww....unagi? Ewwww...

Spicy tuna's by far my favorite, but I like anything with natto on top. Tokurri-Tei, my favorite Japanese restaurant has their special Chirashi platter...all their different kinds of sushi (which is at least 20 different kinds) for $12 after 10:30PM.

I'm getting a craving for hamachi sashimi now. :o Hamachi sashimi with shoyu and wasabi. Mmmm.

rho4life 01-28-2004 08:00 PM

There's a place near my house that gives you "sushi bucks". Basically a frequent buyer type of thing.......I am ashamed at how much i've earned over the years!

The best part about it is that he is willing to try new stuff, and if you ask him to put two or 3 or 4 or 5 different things together, he'll do it. I don't like the places that force you to order everything off the menu!

Peaches-n-Cream 01-28-2004 08:06 PM

My bf loves sushi. He eats it at least once a week. I have tried the tuna, but I usually order the chicken teriyaki. Sushi Samba is a really good restaurant if you are ever in New York City. :)

RedRoseSAI 01-28-2004 08:51 PM

mmm....suuuuushhhiii....

::drools a la Homer Simpson::

alikat2 01-28-2004 09:15 PM

Add me to the list of sushi lovers.......Unagi is probably my fave.

DeltaSigStan 01-28-2004 10:28 PM

there are numerous all-you-can-eat sushi/Japanese food joints around socal. I suggest Onami or Todai.

Munchkin03 01-28-2004 10:40 PM

Yum. Sushi sounds so good right now. I have been good about not spending a lot of money needlessly lately, but since I've been such a good girl, some Shrimp Tempura and miso soup sounds excellent right now!

smiley21 01-28-2004 10:50 PM

sushi addict here!!!!!!!!!! my fav is deep fried dynamite roll:D

Knowledge1922 01-28-2004 10:56 PM

Unagi (Eel) is my fave

i love sushi:)

33girl 01-28-2004 11:02 PM

mmmm, sushi. I think that will be lunch tomorrow. :)

AlphaSigOU 01-28-2004 11:40 PM

My favorites: unagi (eel), maguro (tuna), shiro maguro (albacore tuna), ebi (shrimp) and a couple of more I just can't think of right now. If it wasn't so f*cking expensive I'd be chowing down on some right now. But there is a Todai here in the Dallas area, all you can eat sushi!

California roll is Americanized sushi! :)

Ditto that. If you even tried to order a California roll at Tokurri-Tei, Kazu-san will chase you out of his restaurant with his cleaver! California rolls aren't Japanese at all!

Todai rocks, I ate there when I was visiting my aunt and uncle in Anaheim, Ca. a few weeks ago. I wish there was one in PA.

I absolutely love sushi and word on the street is that Vancouver serves the best sushi outside of Japan. My faves are tuna nigiri, California and BC rolls and agadeshi tofu. I get serious cravings for sushi, in fact I have one now after reading this thread :D

ADPiSAI 01-29-2004 12:05 AM

mmm, love sushi!
my roommate and I make it all the time.

pheenix 01-29-2004 12:53 AM

I'm all for sushi and my favorite has to be the tuna...both spicy and regular. The rainbow roll looks really neat.

MeLikey 01-29-2004 01:13 AM

Yummmmm, love sushi-- at one of my internships, there was a sushi place nearby so I always went there for lunch, came with free miso soup too.

ZTAngel 01-29-2004 09:39 AM

I ate sushi last night. My favs are Rainbow Rolls, any roll with cream cheese, and the egg sushi (I can't think of the name).

AOTTAdvisor 01-29-2004 10:22 AM

Oh my gosh, I LOVE sushi! My favorite place is GENKI in Atlanta and my favorite roll is the super crunch, which is a tempura roll with this AWESOME sauce. Okay, now I am craving it--I want sushi NOW!! Oh, and I like the rainbow roll too!

veemers 01-29-2004 10:39 AM

i had sushi for the first time last spring when our asian club made them for one of our study nights during finals. cheap sushi? not a good first impression. i was able to get some real sushi a few months later when a friend and i went to a real restaurant. now i love it!!

AznSAE 01-29-2004 11:50 AM

I had my co-worker try sushi for the first time a couple of weeks ago. For the longest time, she thought sushi was slurping down raw oysters dipped in sauce . Now she likes it.

Egg=tamago?

ZTAngel 01-29-2004 12:28 PM

Yes! Tamago. Thank you, I couldn't think of the Japanese name for it.

DigitalAngel126 01-29-2004 02:25 PM

Sushi is, by far, my favorite food. Lucky for me, I live in north central Indiana where I can eat all the sushi I want  *heavy sarcasm*. My dad has been to Japan a few times and the stories he tells of sushi straight from there makes me want to salivate. My favorites: tuna and salmon. yummmmm.

There is a place in Chicago I love, but the name escapes me. Perhaps a Chicago GCer can help me out?? I think it's on Ontario. Hatsuhana or something similar?? Next to Mike Ditka's.

ThetaGrrl 01-29-2004 02:55 PM

I went to Japan for two weeks this summer and had sushi close to every day.

Let me tell ya, sushi here just isn't the same now. Here you get two pieces of nigri for what? Maybe an average of $4? It's about the equivalent to $1 there (100 yen), or a little bit more for more expensive fish. Plus, it's insanely fresh. I have to be a little wary here in Colorado, where you know that it can't be too fresh.

Also, proper sushi etiquette says that you have to eat a piece of ginger between every piece. I had no idea about this until I went over there, but the chefs are offended if you don't cleanse your palate between pieces of sushi.

Makes sense to me... the different varieties of fish have their own unique flavors and textures.

KillarneyRose 01-29-2004 03:42 PM

Another Sushi lover here! My favorite is definitely the spicy tuna roll. I would eat it more often if it weren't so expensive! :(

If anyone is ever in Annapolis, stop by a Japanese restaurant called "Joss" right on Main Street. There's always a wait to be seated, but the sushi is incredible!

Steeltrap 01-29-2004 03:47 PM

Sushi thoughts

I'm a limited sushi eater because I dislike wasabi and nori, so rolls are out of the question. I like the sushi over rice (nigiri sushi?) and sashimi. Tuna and salmon are my favorites. Yumm.

xok85xo 01-29-2004 05:28 PM

i love sushi..randomly i'll get cravings for it and it will be like the only thing i'll want to eat for days at a time (but unfortunately my bank account can't accomodate that). my favorites are: salmon, tuna, spicy tuna roll, spider roll (soft shell crab), and shrimp tempura rolls...

there is this place in the east village on 8th ave between 1st & 2nd(i believe) that has 1/2 price on all of their sushi so not only is the food amazing its cheap!

dammit, now i'm gonna have to get some sushi this weekend i think.

Tom Earp 01-29-2004 06:19 PM

OKAY, for the Novices on site, what is SUSHI?

Do I eat raw Stuff, Tuna, Clams, Salmon, but to lay a cat fish out on the plate. NOT!:(

Pleeze fill me in on what I hope I am missing!

aephi alum 01-29-2004 08:31 PM

This might help: http://www.eatsushi.com/

I know I'm not going to do it justice, but the short version is that sushi involves seafood and/or vegetables, rice, and (in the case of rolls) seaweed. Tuna, salmon, and yellowtail are quite common and are used raw; shrimp and eel are also used, and are cooked. You can also make vegetarian sushi with carrots, cucumber, avocado, etc. You dip a piece of sushi in soy sauce then eat it.

Because the fish is raw, you have to be sure it's absolutely fresh and carefully handled.

Professional sushi chefs take their trade very seriously and must do long apprenticeships before going out on their own.

ohhh, now I want sushi :(

I have to echo the sentiments of my fellow Vancouverite and affirm that Vancouver does, indeed, have hella-good sushi.....

Glitter650 01-30-2004 12:51 AM

Well seeing as how there is at least 20 sushi places within a 1 mile radius of my place and my sisters almost all LOVE it.... I do go to sushi A LOT... but I don't really enjoy fish... I usually eat tempura or something.. but I LOVE miso soup

AOX81 01-30-2004 01:15 AM

I only eat sushi that my husbands grandmother makes...she is full blooded Japanese. :)

It's just not the same in restaurants...

Rudey 01-30-2004 01:46 AM

I find the food disgusting. I'm not talking cheap sushi either. I personally don't like fish and seafood so this is the biggest part of it. But I've been to extremely expensive places where it's some ridiculous guy who thinks what he does is an art - still I hate sushi. Even the rice, I'm not a fan of because Asian rice is so sub-par to me. Miso soup is also by far the most disgusting thing ever. Even a Japanese desert like mochi (I think that's what it is with the dough wrapped ice creap) leaves a lot to be desired.

I do think however with some of the fusions I've tried with sushi somehow thrown in, it becomes interesting and I don't hate it.

-Rudey
--And the stupid thing is I always keep trying it even though I hate it because it's colorful and looks so damn pretty.

Buttonz 01-30-2004 02:17 AM

I luv sushi! The place i got to if you go before a certain time it's half price so I can usally eat a meal for about $15 or so...not bad. I usally get 3-4 rolls and sometimes some sashimi. I don't like koher sushi...ugh
